First time i have ever played this game per recommendation of a close friend and this is a great FPS lots to do besides just shoot things. Lots to pay attention to, many game settings, and such.. Honestly it was worth the $.

I bought this DLC during the 2015 Steam Summer sale after reading all the glowing reviews. Unfortunately, given the infamous history of the base game (class action lawsuit!), the user base has pretty much dropped to nil. While this multiplayer DLC may have been active when first released, multplayer is certainly a ghost town now. Don't bother buying this. or other multiplayer DLCs. If you're going to buy this game, go for the single player stuff.

(For context, this is part 2 of a review. Click here to read Part 1) The main campaign is surprisingly short, considering it's the only thing of "substance" in the package. Clocking in at 5.8hrs according to Steam when I first beat it with a friend, there isn't a whole lot of reason to go back to besides getting the legendary weapons or trying to find all the lame and awful audio logs. So what's ultimately the critical failing of Aliens Colonial Marines? A lack of player agency. So many games feel like movies or theme park rides, where you have no contribution to anything that's going on. Yes, you fight the aliens because they're an opposing force, but I'm far more interested in fighting a force I have a huge chance of losing against. I'm reminded of that scene in Aliens where they take stock of what limited weaponry they have. I mean that's video games 101. Setup a challenge for the player, he succeeds or fails based on his own skills or the developers teachings. The only thing that the vanilla game has as far as that's concerned, are health pick ups, armor pick ups, weapon selection and weapon upgrades. Yes, there's a rank up and progression system as well, but you never really feel it in game. Your health doesn't go up, you can't wear more armor. Nothing. Your weapon upgrades are whatever the hell the developers thought they could add easily. Like a sloppy looking scopes or laser sights that don't feel at all like Aliens. This is a far cry from something like Resident Evil 4/5, where you upgrade your weapon with increased critical chances or the ability to hold more ammo or just more power and you can then feel your influence on it as you face off against old enemies. That's true substansive player choice. The Bug Hunt DLC (sold seperately) is the closest Aliens Colonial Marines comes to being a legitimately good game. It's a survival mode like most games have these days, but it really does do the things ACM should have done in the first place. You're given a surprisingly large map to explore and to figure out, with no story and no railroading to get in the way. You gain money from killing xenos and then can spend that money on armor, health, sentry guns, opening doors, etc On top of all that, it really does something interesting: There's a threat meter that increases as you play, so aliens start doing more damage and taking less damage from you. So you can't just camp somewhere, you have to activate these threat inhibitors placed around the map and survive the mini gauntlet they throw at you, and you're rewarded with the threat being lowered, thus making it easier on you. Figuring out where to camp or when to restock your health/armor/ammo, simple things like that helps add up to a decent risk vs reward system that the main game should have been about. So do I recommend the DLC? Absolutely not. It certainly makes the game better, but it's the kind of content that should have shipped with the game. ACM and this DLC should only be played by people who are desperate for co-op games to play, and when it's on sale. *As a final insult to injury, Aliens Colonial Marines has a weird automatic Steam start bug if you quit out of it. You better watch out if you want a refund.
I wanna introduce you to a personal friend of mine. This is an M41A pulse rifle. Ten millimeter with over-and-under thirty millimeter pump action grenade launcher.
Land on LV-426 and head over to Hadley’s Hope with three other Colonial Marine friends. Fight the Alien Horde, and Weyland Yutani Corporation. This is one of the most enjoyable team games I have ever played. Strategy is a must, and skill takes a back seat to teamwork. Work together, or die together. Set up auto-turrets to defend your area, activate suppressors to lower the enemy difficulty. Players earn money for kills that can be spent on opening doors, buying health, buying amo, etc. If a player goes down a team mate can revive them, or they can spend $1000 to buy back in. Money becomes critical as the enemy threat escalates to the max! Use iconic weapons such as the smartgun, pulse rifle, and flame thrower to fend off the onslaught. Your custom loadouts from multiplayer are also available to use here. There are 3 maps to choose from. Each map is designed well, and offers multiple paths, and strategies to choose from. This is must for anyone who owns the game. During a Steam sale you can find it for $1 To find friends checkout Aliens: Colonial Marines | Bug Hunt group. The ACM-BH group also hosts regular Saturday events, and a Teamspeak server. You can also check out Older Gamer for Tuesday night Bughunt. Your standard horde defense mode made DLC. Fortunately now it is all in one pack with base game, so all new players will get it anyway. Maps are interesting and You can really spent some quality stressful time on them. Do not try to play this mode alone, it's really hard with even two players, so I recommend three minimum.
