Really fun zombie survival game. It's the type of group/hideout/self-management that you hope for in a survival experience, without being too bogged down by graphical quality or feature creep. Zombie encounters need to be thought about before they're committed to.

I love these games, love the whole concept of if you die... your character stays dead and you move onto someone else. It definitely punishes you for sucking at the game. And gathering resources for your camp etc!! 10/10

Zombie survival game that I kept coming back to over the years, something about this game makes it addictive. I would recommend this game over the newer State of Decay title. Pros: - Satisfying animations of vaulting, zombie grabs, finishing moves. - Resources gathering system, not too complicated. - Base building - The fact that survivor dies in game is a nice touch Cons: - For some the graphics may seem a bit outdated compared to other games released in 2015. - Occasional bugs, however it did not affect the gameplay in any negative way.

Great game, really interesting concept. Sound effects are great, every special zombie has a unique and distinct cry, weapons, cars, combat, common zombies, etc. everything sounds great. The music is awesome, it changes in different situations preparing you for what's coming, and feels really immersive. The character's voice acting is really nice, the missions dialogues, the random dialogues between characters, etc. It's really well done, it makes you feel part of the world. Graphics are nice, not great, but they are ok for the time of the game. Some of the zombies and characters look a bit cartoony, but in general they look decent. Overall, the world looks great. The note book-like UI is a nice touch and brings some immersion. Gameplay is really fun and engaging. You need to build a community which start with a few characters, find a suitable place to establish a base, scavenge resources, items, etc. to keep building and upgrading your base and also to keep alive the community. In your base you can build a variety of facilities to make your survivor's life easier, to craft items, to defend, etc. You don't have a main character, you start with a few which you can switch to control, and with time, you build friendship with the rest, so you can play and upgrade them. If the current character you are using dies, you lose it permanently, and you have to continue with another member of your community suffering a morale penalty. Eventually, you can play and upgrade almost every member of the community (with some exceptions). Every character has a bunch of skills that can be upgraded by doing a related task (for example, to level cardio, you need to run a lot). At certain levels, you unlock specializations to further upgrade your characters. Also, your survivors have some traits and personal skills which affects their behavior and skills in a positive or negative manner. Sometimes you need to take these survivors on a quest to calm them down or to cheer them up to avoid negative consequences. To be able to fight the zombies, you need equipment (melee weapons, guns, explosives, etc.) which you need to scavenge, and then depending on your contribution to the community (influence), you can use with different survivors. Fighting zombies is really satisfying (once you leveled your survivor). Depending on the specialization you select, it unlocks melee finishers and improves combat a lot. Also avoid using guns without suppressor because you will bring more trouble to yourself. When your survivor is not leveled, be stealthy and try to avoid combat as much as possible, because you will suffer a lot and probably die in the process. The special zombies are a great addition to the mix, each requiring a different approach to fight them. Always keep an eye on the wandering hordes. There are a lot of side missions to complete. You can use cars (which you will have to learn to drive in reverse to avoid destroying them) to kill zombies and move around the map. You can also clear buildings to make outposts equipped with traps to protect against hordes. Also, there's an interesting mechanic: when you leave the game, and pick it up again later, it registers the time that passed and a lot of events take place, like the game world continues to evolve even when you are not playing. Apart from the campaign, there's also the Lifeline storyline which take place in another map, where you control a group of soldiers who are sent to a city overran by zombies to rescue important scientists, researchers and civilians left in the city. While you are at it, you need to survive a lot of zombie sieges. Here the gameplay changes a lot, it becomes a lot harder, because all the missions are time-sensitive, giving you little time between sieges to complete them and also to scavenge a bunch of resources for your base. So expect a big difficulty spike. Also, there's Breakdown mode, which is a survival/sandbox where you start with a character in the map from the campaign, and you need to survive. You need to build your base and collect resources all the same, but there's no story, just exploring, scavenging and surviving. You start with one random survivor, and then you can complete challenges to unlock "heroes" which are, for the most part, familiar characters from the campaign and lifeline. They come with special abilities and starting weapons. After unlocking them, you can start this mode with one of them instead of a random one. Once you depleted all resources on the map, or when you are ready to move on, you can find, repair and refuel a vehicle to leave the map with 7 survivors. The map restarts and increases the difficulty by one level. There are 10 levels of difficulty, which you can select at the start if you already unlocked them. Be prepared for a challenge, because the amount of zombies and special zombies increases a lot with each level. This is a great mode, but gets old and repetitive really quickly, because the map is always the same, and if you have a favorite base, you will always pick it. Also, when you have your favorite characters leveled and equipped, there's no point to keep leveling other characters because you can only continue to the next level with 7. The campaign story is great, a lot of memorable and relatable characters, some intriguing and sad events. And the ending is... for you to find out 😉. The lifeline storyline is also nice, but not that memorable, however it has a couple of endings to discover. There are some annoying bugs in the game, nothing game-breaking, but still annoying. Also, some of the bugs works in your favor, like the resource outpost bug. So... not that bad. The campaign map is really nice, big open-world full of places to explore. You can get stuck in a lot of places with your car, which is a bit annoying. Also, you can't break fences with it, so be prepared to lose a lot of cars stuck on fences. After playing a lot of Breakdown, the Lifeline map is a great change, big city map, with the highway leading to various side places. Sadly, you don't have enough time to explore it, because you are busy fending off zombie sieges and rescuing NPCs. In short, great game with a lot of interesting mechanics and engaging gameplay, if you are a fan of zombie games, you must play this.
