  i didn't know it has mimics and i tried to grab a health potion and it sprouted teeth and killed me, my trust has been betrayed, how dare you edit after playing for 2 more hours: the mimics continue to kill me, they appear only when I am most desperate for a health potion. they haunt my dreams, stop laughing at my pain you ghouls

  It's tight. The new episode is worth the price of admission alone. This comes packaged with a custom version of GZDoom with graphical default settings (Vintage, Vintage+, Retro, Modern, and Modern+) that let you quickly and easily get the game looking as crunchy or smooth as you want with hot swap keys for each mode bound to the F8-F12 keys. I'm usually not a fan of GZDoom for vanilla style play, but these convenient default video settings make that something of a non-issue. The new lighting effects only available with GZDoom are wonderfully atmospheric, tasteful, and compliment enemy sprites excellently.

  I'm not sure exactly why—maybe because this comes with a version of GZDoom that's better set up for the game than my own installation, or because of the gameplay changes, most notably weapon speed (and maybe more generous soul pickups?)—but, despite bouncing off the original WAD after the first few levels, I'm liking REKKR a lot more this time around. The sprite work is as handsome as ever and the levels flow beautifully, without the slaughtermap-esque difficulty of a lot of modern WADs; alongside the minimal but atmospheric music, it's not hard to imagine you're playing a lost Doom engine classic rather than a new game, a sort of less abstruse Hexen. The environmental design is obviously a labour of love, alternating between believable and picturesque valleys, villages and fields and creepy abstract fortresses in a way that's more reminiscent of Build than id Tech games (and there are toilets!). I've not tried the new episode yet, but I'm fairly confident in saying that this version is well worth the few bucks it costs. Edit: I've now finished the new episode, which is excellent (the condensed version of a Hexen hub was a standout, as were some theming choices I'd be loath to spoil) and offers a simple but satisfying conclusion to the narrative. Definitely worth the price of admission.

  One of the best Doom total conversions now as a standalone game with a bonus episode? More than worth the asking price. Was going to drop it into crispy doom, but the voxels are neat.

  Highly recommended. Excellent Doom total conversion WAD with a unique setting, monsters, and weapons. Comes with easy to use GZDoom presets for your preferred visual style. If you love Doom/Heretic/Hexen you will love this.

  A great little game, the new expansion to the original (free) campaign is here as well, and it's some of the best stuff made for the vanilla engine limits. The monsters, enemies and use of dehacked features are really interesting and fun, and the custom GZdoom port it comes with eliminates a lot of the problems I've had with the engine in the past. A̶l̶t̶h̶o̶u̶g̶h̶,̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶m̶u̶s̶i̶c̶ ̶m̶i̶g̶h̶t̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶s̶t̶ ̶m̶u̶s̶i̶c̶ ̶I̶'̶v̶e̶ ̶e̶v̶e̶r̶ ̶h̶e̶a̶r̶d̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶a̶ ̶v̶i̶d̶e̶o̶ ̶g̶a̶m̶e̶.̶ ̶E̶v̶e̶r̶y̶ ̶s̶o̶n̶g̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶d̶r̶e̶a̶d̶f̶u̶l̶,̶ ̶d̶i̶s̶s̶o̶n̶a̶n̶t̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶g̶r̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶.̶ I found an issue for the above problem. If you're not using the default launcher to play Rekkr, and you have a default midi device other than FluidSynth set, it'll sound terrible since everything will be using the wrong instrument. Use FluidSynth for the correct sound. There's also some other sound issues, most of the sounds are in a low bitrate to mimic the original engine, but some are in higher qualities straight from a particular soundbank and they really stand out. Well worth the price.

  I already played the free version of this, and whinged and moaned about its projectiles and combat more than I should have on certain basket weaving forums. But you know what? I take my hat off to you Revae, you smoothed the heck out of this game, and now playing Rekkr is the bomb. I always liked the visual design of levels, and loved the unique soundtrack, but now the gameplay at last has the responsiveness and violent feedback to match. Maybe it's a placebo effect, maybe it's Maybelline, but Rekkr just shot up to my top 3 New Wave Shooters of all time simply because the bow feels faster and more accurate. I can even stand the Rune Launcher now, feels more like chucking a small nuke and less like heaving rocks that dissipate with a fart. Soul ammo still disappears rapidly, and the game really, REALLY wants you to get up in the enemies' face even with the ranged weapons, but it feels far faster and more impactful to do so, with less chance of mobs gracefully dancing out of the way of your shots at the last moment. Solid recommendation, and one of the purest Retro Shooters available.

  REKKR gives an authentic 90s experiences that absolutely doesn't feel out of place with the likes of Hexen, Heretic, and of course, DOOM. Think of REKKR as Viking DOOM. Having played this before the Steam release, I can tell you this was an instant buy! The weapons feel balanced and the maps are fun and challenging with plenty of interlinking areas. The enemies feel familar to what you're likely used to with DOOM but still feel fresh due to them having their own unique abilities. I especially love the mimics and the floating eyeballs, as they all bring something fun to the gameplay. So far, I haven't noticed many bugs but from what I've seen, the death messages don't display the correct enemy that killed you, as well as some sounds cutting off or not playing at all. And I also wish I could customise the message display to be a little bigger and have it to the right of the screen like classic DOOM. Besides that, the overall rating for this game hasn't changed and it's still an essential grab for any DOOM and retro FPS fans. It's top notch 90s FPS throwback fun.
