This game looks interesting but it is just repetitive tedious trial and error clicking on things while hoping to be holding the correct object. Then when you go complete a task you are rewarded with nothing, just the chance to do more useless tasks with zero payoff or explanation. I was tired of even trying after 30 minutes.

This is the 34th review of the Steam Redlight series, a series where I purposely seek out negatively or controversially rated games on Steam to see if they're as bad as the Internet says they are. It's accompanied by a video review that can be found here. In summary, I can recommend Pizza Ghest, and as a numerical score I’d give it a 6/10. The game has strong visual themes, the story and environment is well crafted and interesting, the attitude of the game is humorous and enjoyable, and over 2/3 of the gameplay is thematic and well implemented. Its shortcomings can be found in several non-critical bugs and the remaining 1/3 of gameplay that leaves something to be desired.

    Introduction

In Pizza Ghest, you play as an unnamed protagonist, who I’ll just refer to as Baghead for obvious reasons. The story’s beginning is simple — you want pizza. But... in Hell. In Hell, is both different and similar to real life. You see, in this realm, you have to pay for pizza with sacrifice, sanity, and your soul. As you follow along Baghead’s sidequest, you’ll encounter thieves, terrible employees, the devil, and bad neighbors. It’s around this time you’ll find that Hell isn’t that far-off from what you may experience in real life. When it comes to gameplay, the game is largely centered around how Baghead interacts with items, which you can hold four of. Sometimes you have to combine items, sometimes you have to throw them, sometimes you have to find them, and sometimes you have to avoid them. There are six chapters in the game, with each having its own take on the core gameplay of item interaction. There are some action elements in this game, and it’s worth noting that the game has an easy difficulty that does make some notable changes; by default the game is set to Normal. Lastly, there are different variations to Baghead’s apartment — item placements aren’t always in the same place. I can’t tell if they’re randomly placed or if there are several prearranged instances, but there is some variation in how the apartment is arranged. That’s about all the foundation I think is necessary to cover, so let’s talk about what I liked.

    The Good

The games strongest aid is its distinct visual style. I favor thick line-art, and this game is largely composed of that style. The stylized comic panels and how they tell the passage of time is feels fitting for the visual style. The models and the environment detailed and are easy to look at, while having this undertone of dark fantasy and realism, particularly how Baghead’s apartment building is built. The UI is simple yet successful at conveying just about everything it intends to. Another thing I enjoyed is the game’s presentation of the story. The story is simple, yet the adventure progresses in an exciting way that left me interested in learning more about my surroundings. While this story is just a side-quest in this Bagheads’ life, I think the universe we’re given is alluring and makes you want to learn more about it. The obstacle is clear, and while the route taken to resolve it is a little outlandish, it’s suitable. There was one transition between chapter three and four that didn’t quite make sense to me, but that’s only one bump out of six which feels like a healthy ratio. Next, the overall attitude of the game is humorous while remaining dark which compliments the experience. While the overall scenario is humorous, the game doubles down on the comedy with dialogue and decor. The items around Baghead’s apartment and the inclusion of some artifacts of pop-culture don’t feel forced. Several of the references could be lost on many depending on your journey through the Internet, but I was able to appreciate them without them seeming out of place. For my last point, two-thirds of the gameplay felt well incorporated without being too difficult to figure out. Baghead doesn’t seem like a complex character, and his reactions would reinforce that. Learning about Baghead is pretty easy if you just take a look around the apartment, so most of the item puzzles are intuitive. Since the apartment building isn’t that big, there isn’t a whole lot to search when you get to some of the item-finding portions. All-in-all, four out of the six chapters posed a reasonable challenge without sacrifice. But now that we’ve covered what I’ve liked, let’s talk a bit about what I disliked.

    The Ungood

Some of the things I encountered were several bugs of a small variety that were resolved by reloading the level. There was one instance where text was overlaying each other which made the objective hard to read. There was also an instance where I needed to find a book in order to perform an exorcism, but I couldn’t find this book anywhere. I even took all of the movable items in my apartment and threw them in the hallway, but I couldn’t find this book, so I restarted the level. After restarting the level I found this book almost immediately after receiving the objective, so I’m convinced that the book didn’t spawn. If that’s the case, that could be a pretty terrible experience considering you may have gone through what you thought was the whole building without being able to find it, causing confusion. The next bug, as well as the final couple of points talk about the last chapter of the game, which could be considered a spoiler for some. You can reveal the spoiler text if you’re alright with learning about the last two chapters. Another bug I ran into is that the final boss wouldn’t spawn after some of my deaths. After getting whooped on a few times, I realized that she was just outright missing. Even after successfully killing myself, she didn’t respawn. I was able to fix this by restarting the level. Now, the worst point is the last 1/3 of gameplay that I didn’t love, which is largely centered around the need to throw items. Baghead, being a simple bag-wearing humanoid, has no powers and so the only means he has of combat is throwing items. The last two chapters of the game rely on throwing as a combat action, but throwing feels clunky. In chapter five, you fight against these elemental diamonds, but throwing something feels like a limp, underhanded throw with a sharp arc. In the very last chapter, you have to fight the boss of the chain. The game gives you the ability to throw with the Right Mouse Button (RMB), but during this chapter you’re also able to throw with the Left Mouse Button (LMB). I found the final fight extremely difficult because I kept throwing items with the RMB, which is a weak throw, and it throws the entire item stack. Item stacks only make an appearance at this stage of the game without any mention and when I was using the RMB, I felt that this stage was too difficult due to the scarcity of ammunition, meanwhile I’m throwing five plates at once instead of one at a time, doing the same damage. The LMB throws straighter and farther and is a better version of the throwing mechanic that I wish made an appearance while battling the elemental diamonds.

    The End

That’s about all I have to say about the game — if I had any other words of wisdom, the game’s store page doesn’t really set expectations what gameplay is like, which has lead to some of the negative reviews. I’d think it be a good idea if the developers explained a bit more about what a player may experience to save someone the trouble of leaving a negative review since those hurt much more as opposed to leaving no review at all. If you’re into curator groups, we have one of those. Did you like this written review?
