Sure, it's a decent enough adventure game, but you've likely already got it in you library anyway. I was foolish enough to purchase it, and, frankly, I don't know what I was expecting. It's literally the same game with some minor improvements, and it's a bit obscene to sell a patch as a semi-new title (just look at Disco Elysium, for instance; that's how a director's cut distribution should be handled). Frankly, I'm irritated, but mostly at myself. Basically, don't repeat my mistake and don't buy this version if you already own the original. Disclaimer: once again, the game itself might be a bit overestimated, but it's a good game nontheless, and if you don't own the original, go for this version without doubt, you will enjoy it.

What a wonderful game! The story is mainly fun with a great sense for dark humor, yet can be moving and deep at the right places, when the more serius things come closer to the surface. The superb voice acting plays a big role in building the atmosphere, all characters are great, especially loved Kathy and her snarky remarks :). Puzzles are challenging enough to be fun to solve, but never overcomplicated to get you stuck for too long, you always get a subtle hint if you listen carefully. The gameplay experience is polished with great care, i did not come upon a single hiccup during the whole playthrough. I played the original, but the details of the story have already slipped my mind, so this was a perfect opportunity for a refresher and a great way to show some support for the development team. The new content fits in very smoothly and the changes manage to improve an already great game. It felt like coming home. Thank you all for your hard work!

I had been meaning to play this game for a couple years now. It's been sitting there in my library but when I heard this was coming out so I decided to wait. I'm glad I did too cause this is a fantastic version. I haven't finished yet, but I am loving it so far. The puzzles so far have been terrific and not falling victim to the regular point-and-click pitfalls. It's not the obscure combination of two items or triggering complicated series of events. The puzzles make you think but provides the information pretty readily for you to do so. On top of that, there's no pixel hunting with the welcomed addition holding down the spacebar view all the items you can interact with. One thing I haven't seen mentioned much in other reviews so far is the addition of controller support. When I initially read this I envisioned just using the left analog to control a mouse cursor but it is so much more. The cursor is actually completely gone and replaced with traditional direct character control over Kathy. While walking around you use the right analog to view items directly around her and select which one to interact with. This system works surprisingly well and is actually really nice to use. I've played many classic point-and-click games but never have I seen such a great and well thought out implementation of controller support. If I were to have one small complaint it's about the animation. I would have liked to see the Directors Cut add a few more frames to Kathy's movement. Obviously not a huge deal, it's pretty fine the way it is and I found myself getting used to it pretty quickly. I think I've just gotten a bit spoiled with the beautiful animation you seen with some of the newer pixel art games. The game has nice art and wonderfully voice acted though, so overall it's been a great experience and can't wait to finish.

I first played the original version of Kathy Rain five years ago (Slowly starts turning to dust) and it was a enjoyable game so I was definitely looking forward to this Director's Cut. Because its a been a while since I last played it I can't totally recognize all the changes but essentially the Director's Cut fixes the original game's biggest flaw which was the kind of weak last act. It completely overhauls it and makes it a far more cohesive and conclusive ending that ties up the characters' arcs better and makes the truth of the matter more clear and less vague and muddled. The DC also streamlines the controls and improves the resolution too and that's all good. Essentially the DC ironed out pretty much any flaw the original game had. Kathy Rain is a definite recommend for adventure game fans, its quality all around. I really hope we get a sequel at this point.

Excellent point & click adventure revitalized into a new fresh package definitely worth checking out. Art, writing and story feels really polished. It's a great detective story in an interesting setting, great characters and some very fun puzzle mechanics. Great controller support, a modern engine for a smoother experience and new content makes this game even better. Also, providing a non time limited 50% discount plus any other available discount for owners of the original is really the way to go, and makes this a steal for all the extra work put in even on day one.

Excellent point & click adventure, with charming characters, a great story and beautiful pixel art. Most of the puzzles are clever and intuitive, only once I had to use a guide (to get the code for the safe). Very recommended for all adventure fans! Oh and dear developers, a sequel with Kathy and Eileen would be great! :)

Builds up on the original game with small improvements, but doesn't radically change the experience enough to justify buying it again for people that played the original. I'd say only buy this if you haven't played the original Kathy Rain.

Q: I haven't played Kathy Rain; is this game any good? A: Yes, Kathy Rain is one of the more widely known modern adventure games and is absolutely worth playing if a twin-peaksy style point-and-click mystery adventure sounds like it might be up your alley. Set in 1995, the game follows our protagonist, a sharp-tongued, chain-smoking, hog-riding counterculture college girl in her early 20s. Estranged from her family, she receives word that the grandfather she hasn't seen since she was a little girl has passed. Upon attending his funeral, she learns that her grandfather had been performing strange investigations before being struck with an inexplicable medical malady that rendered him catatonic for the last years of his life. Kathy tries to get to the bottom of what happened to grandpa, and so goes poking her nose around town where it doesn't belong as increasingly supernatural events begin to occur. Q: Should I buy this version, or the original? What are the differences? A: Unless you are an ultra-purist, this version is almost certainly better. From a technical standpoint, this version runs better, with no launcher, higher framerates, and at a resolution that supports widescreens. While no major art has changed significantly, the resolution tweaks combined with added animations and enhanced effects do improve the look of the game. There is somewhat more content in this version of the game, and the new stuff is pretty seamlessly integrated into the existing game to the point where it's not casually clear exactly what has been added where, but it does improve the experience. Compared to the first version of the game, the Director's Cut has a few hundred more lines of dialogue peppered about, an expanded soundtrack, a few small new scenes and locations sprinkled in, and an extended ending - none of these things change the plot or throw any curveballs, but do provide more context. Also, a handful of puzzles have been tweaked for better usability, a streamlined single-click interface has replaced the old one, and there's 20 additional Steam achievements in this version compared to the first one if you are into that sort of thing. There is one aspect of the ending that has changed. A character you briefly meet in the ending of the original game has been cut and replaced with a different character. I am okay with the change, but I can definitely see it causing some remarks. On the other hand, the original still does retain that special sort of low-res charm, and there's definitely something to be said about the classic feel of the verb coin, so the original does have its good points as well. Q: I already have the original. Should I buy the Director's Cut? A: That's a hard "maybe". If you (like me) are one of the freeloaders that got the original Kathy Rain in a bundle, or during one of the times the game has been given away for free, then I would say, yes, absolutely kick a few bucks to Clifftop Games if you can afford it. More financial support for the studio might fund a sequel, who knows? I remember being somewhat disappointed with the ending to the original Kathy Rain. It wasn't terrible by any means, but my opinion was that the second half of the game was not nearly as strong as the first half of the game. Having played this version, I still feel that way to a degree (there are no major changes after all), but the added context does telegraph the whole thing a lot better and gives more closure on the back end, so it does go a long way towards making the game feel more complete and more naturally paced. I am glad I re-bought the game and played through it again. If you already have Kathy Rain and were not planning on playing through it again anytime ever, I wouldn't say re-buying this version is necessary. It's different, and improved, but not radically. Q: I really like twin-peaksy mysteries like this one, can you recommend some more? Yes! For more character-in-a-small-mysterious-town adventure mysteries, check out Unforeseen Incidents, Rainswept, and Truberbrook, or, for something a little lighter in tone, Thimbleweed Park or Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bonetown. Also, pick up Whispers of a Machine if you haven't done so already.

The original Kathy Rain was a good game with a weak third act that took an odd dive into the supernatural after playing it straight for the majority of its playtime. The Director's Cut fixes this by telegraphing the supernatural elements ahead of time, fixing the "oh, but maybe it was all a dream" silliness that the original tried to play with, and adding about an hour's worth of new puzzles, areas and cutscenes that really flesh out the world of Conwell Springs and Kathy herself. Aside from a few typically annoying adventure game headscratchers (the puzzle in the crypt is still something I never would've figured out without a walkthrough), this is without a doubt the version to purchase if you've never played Kathy Rain before. It makes the original look like a poorly abridged novel and once again, gets my hopes up for Kathy Rain 2.
Welcome to crazy town
Kathy Rain Director's Cut is a re-release of the original game with slight enhancements and bonuses. The game is great and owners of the original got a good discount but still it would've been nice to make this a free upgrade. There's not enough enhancements or new content to justify the price. Story and gameplay are things which makes this game awesome. Kathy is a troubled young woman living with her christian roommate. Kathy's mother is locked up in a mental institution, she smokes and has a bike. A very lovable character with amazing sense of humor and the whole story about her is just amazing. The game starts with a funeral and since then Kathy embarks on a journey to dig some stuff about her family's past. There are several characters in the game, not a lot but all of them have their own character and are very unpredictable (you may hate them at first and start loving them later and vice versa). The story is quite dark and talks about some serious topics while portraying everything through the beautifully crafted scenes and dialogues. The gameplay is the standard point&click adventure. You interact with people, talk about stuff, explore the areas and pick up items into your bottomless pockets. The puzzles are designed very well which is kinda rare. Often puzzles are either too hard or too easy. But here you have pretty consistent puzzles from start to finish with couple of them making your brain work a bit more. Overall everything makes sense most of the time. Graphically the game looks retro but not too much. It has really good pixel art and artistically it's really impressive. All the areas are unique and tell a story. I had no technical problems with this one, game runs fine and is potato friendy. Sound design is another area this game shines in. It's fully voiced and voice acting is done very well. You can hear the emotions characters experiencing. Music is outstanding. It accompanies the mood of the scene very well and enhances your own feelings. Overall it's a very good point&click game for those who enjoy those and for those who also enjoy some mature, serious story about mental issues. Pros

Great story
Dark
Great soundtrack&voice acting
Great artistic design
Interesting characters
Well done puzzles design
Cons

Upgrade should be free

Follow my curator page for more
  My Twitch
