FSX: Steam Edition - 3D Lights Redux Add-On Features

Experience stunning 3D light effects in Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition!

A2A Simulations 3D Lights REDUX ™ casts light out into 3d space, creating stunning visuals and a more immersive flying experience.

In real life, it is always spectacular to watch an aircraft fly at night, with the glow emanating from strobes, beacons, and landing lights. Now the '3D Lights Redux' ™ system brings this authentic experience into Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition.

3D Lights Redux ™ gives all core FSX aircraft an entirely new suite of lights and effects. With 3D Lights Redux, some landing lights have vintage bulbs (Douglas DC3 style), halogens, and even the latest Xenon lights. This package also adds an older style red beacon, smaller 2-pulse strobes, single bright strobes, and realistic navigation lights. There are also custom lights for aircraft like the Airbus A321 with the quad nose-gear mounted lights. The Boeing 747 gains a recreation of its classic twin headlamps and all aircraft receive an enhanced ambiance when these lights are operated.

Key Features

Over 40 new lighting effects including strobes, beacons, navigation, and runway lights

  • Fully-realized 3D landing lights which actually cast light into space

  • Vintage, halogen, and modern xenon lights included

  • Installs into all twenty-four core FSX:SE aircraft

  • Entirely new effects suite resulting in stunningly realistic night time environments

At the time of this review, 3D Lights Redux leaves default aircraft panel.cfg edits useless with no effect. ActiveSky Next's xgauge won't work in default aircraft if 3D Lights Redux is an activated dlc. ActiveSky Next's xgauge installation wizard will properly edit panel configs and put xgauge in the gauges folder but if 3D Lights Redux is an active dlc then nothing from windows or fsx comes up asking if its ok to run xgauge.dll, unless a person switches to a non-default aircraft, and even then, with xgauge then in the trusted section of fsx.cfg, xgauge will still not show up in any default aircraft.

This add-on will lock out your default aircraft making it impossible to add new liveries. The aircraft.cfg and panel.cfg are hidden in the DLC folder after installing. Even if you edit these files for your new liveries half the time the sim falls back to default textures. The landing lights are disabled during the daytime and the switches automatically turn off. While their FSX:boxed version includes the option to have landing lights during the daytime, they choose not to offer this to the FSX:Steam community. As long as you do not use additional liveries to your default aircraft or plan to have landing lights on during the day (FAA Lights on for Safety program) then this is OK. If you enjoy different liveries for your aircraft or wish to fly a little more realistically, then unfortunately this add-on is no longer the top notch product it used to be.

Though appreciating other lights over the default ones, this one seems to be too bright in general. I bought it for a reduced price, and I do not really know what to think of it. There are plenty of free addons out there improving the same as this DLC does. Why wasting your money for something you can get for free? 3D lights or not, it is just too bright, and definitely not worth the full price.

This addon is a really good improvement over default lights. And the price is reasonable. But you don't need it if you have the REX addon.

First off even though I have given this product a thumbs down it is NOT because of the quality. Let me explain. The effects themselves are truly gorgeous, especially the strobes (anti collision lights) when looking at other aircraft at night, twinkling in the sky around you, simply sweet. Even on the ground when they turn onto the runway, activate their strobes and landing lights it makes it more realistic than the default lighting, making you realise why they only activate them when on the runway (so bright). I do love the effect and even though I have bought it I have had to uninstall it for one reason already mentioned by others on here. If you are going to have FsPassengers installed (truly immersive) then you have 2 choices laid out to you. 1) Have the light penalty set to off or 2) keep taking the fine and points deducted........no brainer really. The reason being is that as soon as you raise your landing gear the landing lights go off. You quickly switch them on again only to have them switch off immediately. This is despite the "pilot controls lights" box being checked. Even if you don't have something like FsPassengers but want realism in your flight, like decending below 10,000 ft, unless your gear is lowered your lights simply will not come on. We all strive to have as much realism as possible in our simulators right? So if this is fixed and you combine it with active sky and accu feel and REX Textures it truly would be perfect. I hope that this bug will be fixed and i can then give it a thumbs up because it is a gorgeous effect to have. One can only hope the devs read the comments? 3D Lights Redux Landing Lights "enabled" By C0N3CT|BLOODY and 1 collaborators (This solution is available for all to read in the "Guides" section). Please read carefully the above SOLUTION to the glitchy issue that i and others have had with this product. The chap named above has found a way around the problem and providing you have no issue with the nose wheel landing light hovering 2ft from the fuselage, all things are sorted. As of typing this i have yet to try it with add on aircraft however if i have an issue with it i will post it here. I can now finally give this the thumbs up it deserves. Well done to the guy(s) involved in the solution.

This does improve the light textures which have long bothered me. NOTICE: IT HAS A SEPARATE aircraft.cfg FILE IN THE FSX/DLC/*number for dlc*/SimObjects. This is fixed by copying all of the new aircraft.cfg file from [General] down to the one in the main simobjects folder. Once you have done this for all aircraft, change the folder SimObjects in the DLC subfolder to SimObjectsXXX, which will prevent the game from reading it. This should fix the problem.
