I'm really having a good time so far. :) Developer is super responsive and to be honest, almost all of their games are quality. ***FINISHED THE GAME***

For those that don't follow SEEP as a developer, they make retro-inspired games with intentional limitations, this time they went after the big girl, the original Metroid, not the new games with all the cool ****, the first one, the frustrating one, the progenitor of the name. Now the original Metroid is actually a very simple game with some nuances that were ahead of the time, so in that sense, I think they succeeded in terms of not making it too complicated. However, I think what made Metroid a classic was not just gameplay with the famous ball, it was the atmosphere, it was the mystery that you maybe didn't feel in other games at that time, and to some extent, it was the frustrating level design for which the NES is known for. Even though Cosmos Bit has some decent music choices, I think where it fails is that lack of character, not having a unique and compelling world through the story-telling of the level design, it just feels like another game, and a very forgiving one for what it reminds me of. I think the gameplay is okay, there is nothing wrong with it, but the point I am trying to make is that you have to think of the level design as a tool for world-building, you have to make it interesting for the player to explore and wonder what is at the end of that tunnel, but in this game all the areas are kinda repetitive. The game certainly could use more locations and more visual assets, plus not having as many dull enemies. On that note, all 4 bosses felt like the same enemy, not sure what happened there, the game really needed more variety in that regard. You can 100% the game with all achievements in about 2 hours. The power-ups include the double-jump, gun upgrades, bombs, and a few passive things you can buy in the shop like the extra health and healing charge.

    Pros:

(+) I actually thought you had some good music and sound choices which is important for that gloomy atmosphere, but between having colorful tiles and silly-looking sprites, there was some disconnect for me (granted it seems some enemies came straight from the NES game). It just feels like a friendly version of a much darker game. I thought the gameplay was decent, you always make very fair difficulty, but in this case, you probably wanted more challenge. I thought the store upgrades were a welcome addition as well.

    Feedback:

Bosses - they were more or less the same, I think one had a stump, but otherwise, the same pattern, no challenge too. Pretty disappointing, all of them. You have to give me a little variety there, if I am going to play your game all the way, don't make me fight the same thing over and over. Level Design - I mean, you made enough for it to be serviceable, but if you look at many of those old games in this genre, they often had longer sections with more going on. I also feel like having more secrets, optional areas or even darker tones in tiles probably would help. Overall Thoughts: 6/10 The game is okay by itself if you just want something simple, but I don't think it captures the spirit of a game that we still remember decades later. Normally I don't complain about low difficulty, but you have to appreciate why it's important to replicate that gameplay feel, I am expecting it to be more challenging due to the nature of what you are making. By having all bosses that felt the same, and by having too many areas that felt the same, the game just didn't have enough for me to enjoy. I think the level design needed to be a little more complex, and maybe a little darker too with the tiles. There is nothing wrong with what you doing, but I always feel like you don't take that extra step to make your NES tributes unique and stand out among other games. It's not just level design for the game, it has to be level design for an interesting world. A cute little Metroidvania. Short compared to most of the genre, you're going to beat it in one sitting most likely.

Overall, this was a well crafted, albeit short game. The AI is too simplistic however, the game play is almost completely solid. Any problems with level design such as when the PC jumps up through the doors and the screen switching causes the player to fall back to the previous screen, can be easily circumnavigated. I would give this game a solid 6 for general audiences. The fun colors and ease of learning will make this a favorite for small children. I feel that SEEP may have found a niche in making games for the younger crowd. I would give this game an 8 out of 10 for the 5-9 age group. For children, I would highly recommend it. For older audiences, It is a great example of solid world design and adventure structure.

Definitely worth the price of 3 chocolate bars. I enjoyed it. It's short, doesn't have the exploration (linear progression), secrets (none), or replay (see previous two points) you'd expect of a metroidvania style game but the price is right.

Decent & short metroidvania. The boss battles are a bit too easy.

This was a decent little game, which took about 80 minutes to complete. Taking a bite-sized inspiration from Metroid, there's actually not much of a world to get lost in as the map is quite small, and there aren't any extras. However, the areas and enemies were pretty well designed and pleasing to figure out. The music was great. There is some challenge in managing your limited health in between save points, at least near the beginning, but the game was otherwise very easy, especially the bosses which go down in like 3 seconds. Still, it was a fun playthrough, good blind run.

Nice bite-sized Metroid-style action game. I left it on for lunch so the total clear time should be around 2 hrs. The path is rather linear (you always know where you should go) with a little bit of backtracking. Both graphic and music are great. One gripe is that the boss fights are kinda easy and are too similar, wish there are more variety.
