六祖壇經（亦稱壇經、六祖大師法寶壇經） Introduction

The *Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch* is a Buddhist Chan (Zen) classic. Also known as the *Platform Sutra* or the *Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch*, its full title is *The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, the Supreme Mahayana Prajnaparamita Sutra of the Southern School of Sudden Enlightenment, Delivered by the Sixth Patriarch Huineng at Dafan Temple in Shaozhou*. It is a text attributed to Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism, and compiled by his disciple Fahai. The *Shimen Zhengtong*, Volume 8, *Biography of Yitian*, states that "The Emperor of Liao issued an edict ordering the monks Quanxiao and others to revise the sutra catalogue, and the so-called *Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch* and *Baolin Zhuan* were all burned," suggesting that this book was already included in the sutra catalogue during the Song-Liao period. Extant versions include Ming and Qing dynasty collections, the Fangshan Stone Sutra edition, and circulating editions. In 1976, Japan published a facsimile edition of *The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch*, compiling eleven different versions of the *Platform Sutra*.
