I play the tabletop version which is several sets ahead of Warhammer Underworlds Online so has me itching for more factions to be released. Positives: The game looks great, plays great and has nice variety of gamestyles between warbands. Deck building adds to the personal touch for the warbands. There is a small online community. Negatives: Limited warbands including only two for the base game in comparison to the tabletop. The game should really be Free to Play which would invite more players as the base game doesn't offer enough beyond learning to play. The real life warbands (Models sold by Games Workshop) should include a code for unlocking them digitally much like Magic the Gatherings Planeswalker decks interaction with MTG:Arena. I would also like to see more animations as some attacks/blocks go unnoticed.

I really wanted to like this game. I enjoy the tabletop version and I believe the dev's are Australian (so am I) so I was sincerely hoping it would be as good if not better than the tabletop version. Sadly, it's far away from it's potential currently. As a game, Underworlds is fantastic at both strategy in terms of warband selection, deck building, as well as tactically dealing with the varied events that occur and swings in power on the board. The warbands are growing and as a MVP the game is OK. However that's what it currently is, a MVP. It's easier for me to list the problems currently... Players conceding matches: If you dominate an opponent they rage quit and you don't get any XP. It feels like you just wasted an hour of your time. Bugs: There are a lot of bugs. I had a game frustratingly stall on the last turn of the last phase because of what seemed to be badly coded card. This kind of thing happens often. It's confusing because the rules of each card are quite specific and you'd think they'd lend themselves to a coded game well vs real world interpretation of the rules. Lots and lots of bugs in the game still. Progression: Other than completing some games to get XP and unlock some cosmetic items the progression isn't really there. It is an area that would keep me coming back more but given a lot of games end up being conceded I basically play for hours without even getting any XP to even unlock the basic cosmetics. There aren't even Steam achievements and although not everyone needs them, I like achievements simply from the feeling of progression. It's pretty standard for almost all games to have them so it's unusual a game like this doesn't. Ambience: The ambience is OK but they could have done a lot more to liven things up. It would be rather dreary watching a match on a stream as it just lacks excitement. They have the power of computers to make it more 'wow' and yet it is too much like a board game with very little in the way of sound effects and music. Missing cards: I paid for Eyes of the Nine DLC, put together a deck offline using their standard cards but many of the cards I found were missing in-game. I don't know why they would release a warband without making all cards available for use. It feels like I didn't get what I paid for. It makes Eyes of the Nine, an under-powered warband, even harder to play. Pricing model: Speaking of payment, and maybe not all people would agree with this, but personally I would have made the game free to play with one or two warbands included then allow people to buy their chosen warbands as DLC. It doesn't seem like they tested their pricing model as I'm surprised at this current approach. User experience: Our (I play with a mate) biggest frustration seems to be around the sometimes unintentional moves that happen. And these can be game changing moments. Whether it's a character moving somewhere you didn't want them to (thus rendering them useless for the rest of the phase), or a situation where you are being asked to do a reaction but there is no info or direction on what it is you are supposed to do exactly, or information you are trying to find and you cannot easily find it. It feels like the UX person isn't a player of the game because they've not laid out the information and UI well enough. There aren't even labels/tooltips on some of the buttons. Also, sometimes you click on a card and, before putting it into play, the game treats it as your decision being made so you have to play it even though it technically hasn't been played. This is where we often get stuck, because you are just looking at the ploy card or whatever, but you are forced to play it when you change your mind and want to put it back in your deck to play something else. Then there is the card mechanic - it's not smooth like other CCGs such as Hearthstone. You play a card, select a player for the card, then you have to play the card again! It's quite confusing what's going on when things like this happen and you are under time pressure. They even ask you to select the player when the card is only for one player (ie your only wizard). Things like this need to be streamlined so the game flows and errors are not made. 99% of the errors are actually our own doing, but they are made because of the poor UX. We are fairly regular tabletop players so this isn't new to us, yet the mistakes that happen are simply awful. Graphics: I'm a bit disappointed in this aspect as well. I have everything on max/full settings and it looks low quality. The cards are unclear, nothing is sharp, and this is a game where miniatures in real life are painted in high detail. If they could turn up the graphics a few notches it would look fantastic but I don't even have the ability to go any higher. I'm guessing they've had optimisation issues as it does feel dated. I think the game has huge potential though. They are sorting the bugs out, new warbands are coming as well as new card releases. However I fail to return to online play because the bugs are still affecting my progression and there is simply no feeling of achievement at the end of the game (especially when most games end in conceding). Maybe when the XP system works properly and they introduce a better rewards system, then spruce the graphics and sound up, I will edit my rating. I'm likely going to follow the dev's progress and hope that in a few months it really is worth returning to more often.

So, lets begin by stating that I bought this game on the day they claimed to exit Early Access. It is clearly still an early access game. Also I own the actual boardgame. My experience begins with the fact that before even playing through the tutorial, I encountered a bug so severe, it renders bot matches completely unplayable. The "Score this immediately..." objective card DO NOT WORK when playing against bots. It is impossible to complete them, they are dead cards in your deck. Seriously?? I think to myself: Its no big deal, I'll just have to do live testing of my deck builds against actual opponents. I go on to play my first PvP game. After my inevitable loss due to whiffing every single attack for the entire game (dice game, it happens!), I quickly try to queue for another match. But I cannot. Clicking any of the "Ranked Play" or "Casual Play" buttons both take me to my warbands stats screen. The game looks like it was designed for mobile and the UI is clunky, with ugly square menus, and you will regularly do something you did not intend because the UI highlights one square and then moves your fighter to another adjacent one when you click. It is hard to follow along with what is happening. There is little time to read the cards flashing past when an opponent plays them, and no animation whatsoever when they chose to draw a power for example. You will have to try and read through the clunky game log which obscures half the screen, all the while triggering different tooltips behind it with your mouse. Accessing stats for fighters and trying to see which upgrades they have is also very limited. The amount of information you miss out on is enough to cripple a veteran of the game unless you want to drag the game out forever by trying to click and hover over every panel and fighter to find out what they've got. I cannot recommend the game at this stage and now that I have seen the UI I doubt it will ever be worth the price that they are asking. They have ported a board game and made it harder to play and to know what is actually going on. I cannot stress this enough: _Terrible_UI_design!_

I cannot recommend the purchase of this game in it's current state. Before getting negative, let me just say that the game is fun. The issues I have, have little to do with game play and game balance. I will change my review to positive if/when the following issues are resolved. 1) The UI Everyone and their brother are complaining about this. ・Dice rolls, reaction cards etc, are not show for very long after they are played/resolved. For newer players, it is very difficult to tell what is going on. Please make the dice rolls more UP and FRONT, and slow down all transitions so my poor brain can see what the hell is going on. If you were playing this as a board game you'd be able to see the dice and other components after they are rolled for a long as you want. ・Unable to view your hand(s) in certain menus. Look, I'm stupid. If I can't see my hand at all times I forget what cards I was holding. When placing units, it is very important to know what objectives you have. Currently the game doesn't let you view you hand during unit placement. Huh!? The player should ALWAYS have access to viewing his hand, no matter what. This should be a golden rule. ・No take backs on certain actions. (The escape key doesn't work to take back some actions) Accidentally pick an upgrade for a unit that you didn't mean to? Too bad! Card mechanic works differently for what you expected? Get good. Your fault! Come on! People make mistakes! Until I have fully played an upgrade on an unit, please let cancel until my heart's content! Also, a cancel button would be nice. Escape-key for canceling is kinda odd. ・Generally unclear UI. Where the heck is the save button in deck-edit mode. Oh there it is...it only appears if you make an edit... and when you do make an edit the button is added to top-left-docked UI, which contain things like "Options, rules..." what the heck? Just add a big old save button on the bottom-right like most other card games do. 2) Bugs Some card just don't work like they should. I could understand if this was an early-access title, but a game with such a small card pool should work perfectly on release. Very frustrating. 3) Polish I'm talking about visual effects, sound effects, camera shakes, music, the works. This game has very little polish in its current state. While a lack of polish is fine for an early-access title, I did NOT purchase an early-access title. 4) Limited options No V-Sync? Game on man I don't have a g-sync monitor and I hate tearing! TLDR This game is still very much an early-access title. Wait a while before buying. I hope the player base stick around long enough for it to finally release for real.

Since i looked into the reviews and most of them are from Feb when this game launched, i felt the need to write something. Yes it was a buggy mess in the beginning, but the developer of this game was working on it and now the game runs smooth and quite bug free, for my experience at least. Some reviews also mention that you have wait to long for opponents to do somthing in their phase, while this can still be the case if you are unlucky and play against a sore loser ( who delays every step as far as he can to annoy you out of the game) but the developer now reduced time between each step to a level, which is reasonable. Enough time to think about what you want to do, but not too long, if you have afk or idiot opponent.
Pros:

True to the tabletop skirmish game
Good to practise the real game. The game helps a bit with some things which new players often forget when playing their first games.
Does not follow the current meta. If you are WHU player and play alot, it is really refreshing that the WHU:O meta is a different one.
You can play games against your friends which also have the game. I like this one, because it is not always feasible to meet up for only 2 games, but with quick online matches it is not much of a deal and happenes more often.
You can level your Warbands to unlock cardbacks and other customizations like titles and portraits.

Cons:

Long waiting times to find opponent sometimes
Awful Matchmaking. Its easily possible to get raked vs a highest level player even you have only 1 game played
No communication with other players ( not even the emotes which hearthstone offers )
No punishment for quitting. If you quit a game you lose it. Other player gets rank and you possibly lose ranking. Fine enough, but it is not funny to have an enemy losing one hero and quitting a few times in a row. There should be a way to surrender and the other player needs to agree if he wants to quit and some punishment for quitting.
Overall the game is good, even if it could be improved. My main caveats have to do with too few players, i hope the game eventually gets cheaper or have some other way to bring in more players.

Game system is fine but immersion sucks. Pulls back the camera when combat occurs. Lots of UI stuff in the way. When I set my Stormcast to attack, I want to see the hammer thundering down, perhaps with a screen shake on a critical - bring me in close and generate some impact. Right now - I get a hit and am like " eh ... well .... ok " next round of awkward pillow fights coming up. Work on the immersion and atmosphere - along with more friendly single player options with the bots and I'll review again later ....

Despite being based on a solid game, the product is woefully slow, clunky and bugged. Bugs include, but are not limited to, cards being unplayable from hand (mouse drags background instead of card), inability to cancel out of movement grid when mistakenly picking the wrong piece on using Sepulchral Guards Warden's multi-move ability, etc. Feels like an early beta despite being released. Cannot recommend.

This game should be retitled "Waiting for Opponent: The Game." I bought this game during the COVID19 pandemic in order to play against a friend I'd been playing the tabletop version at the FLGS. While it was fun to play someone you knew, finding matches is a headache. No one plays Casual and ranked games are completely random as far as levels of skills/experience. Furthermore, the game takes too long. You spend most of the game waiting for your opponent to do something. It would be ok if you could alt-tab back and forth, so you can multitask while playing, but this often causes crashes. The game is also a resource hog and the graphics aren't optimized very well. The game is basically static, with few animations and effects, yet my gtx 1070 is whining with pain during the game. Makes no sense at all. In short: If you're desperate for pushing virtual minis around a board and are ok with the problems I outlined above, go for it. If not, then get a better game.

Steelsky have done a great job of bringing Warhammer Underworlds to digital. The game is a snapshot of how it was in season 1, so for any tabletop vets it's a step back in time to 2 years ago (some differences, albeit minor, like Farstriders and Magore being available before Fyreslayers, etc, some cards still missing) The pricing is fair, and the production quality is here. With time and DLC, I expect this to flesh out further. They certainly have a solid roadmap with the job GW has done producing, refining, and polishing the IP over 3 seasons so far. I want to take a moment to highlight what a fine job the developers have been doing with this game in the time it's been available to the public. Throughout early access they provided regular updates, most of which added significant updates and features requested by the community. They listen to feedback and actively work to improve their product. Some people have complained that the game is only available on PC (and steam) at the moment but it's clear they're working to get this up to speed before thinking of cashing in with multiple platforms. Any quibbles I have about UI are minor and have been getting addressed as patches release. If you enjoy the tabletop game, snag this.

It's unfortunate but the multiplayer scene is dead, and while the core system taken from the boardgame is great, everything about the digital implementation is clunky. Great concept, poor execution.
