Well, here I am, just finished the game. I'll be honest with you, I was really looking forward to this game, and whilst I did most certainly enjoy it, im still disappointed. Im going to start this review with the negatives, and end on a more happy note. Though the game length isn't short, took me about 20 hours to complete around 75%, it still feels a lot shorter than Rise of the Tomb Raider. I can't really explain why, but I found myself quite suprised as to how fast the story was progressing. Speaking of the story, I hate to say it, but it's really quite bad. All the characters are pretty much bland and without any character or personality (with the exception of Lara and Jonah). I guarantee you you won't care about anyone else. Also the story just really lacks depth, I didnt get invested in it, at any point. Then we get to another really weird issue. The dialogue. Whilst the quality of the audio is excellent, I can't help but notice quest givers pause a lot longer inbetween sentences than what I would declare a normal way of speaking. It get's really bad when you are sitting at camp when Lara is narrating, sometimes she pauses like 5 seconds before saying anything. Literally half the time I think shes done talking and then suddenly theres more. It's just weird and feels unnatural. Then we get to the gameplay, first of all, I find there to be a lack of enemies. Sure you do fight quite regularly, whether it's stealth or combat, but, I just ended the game feeling like I hadn't really done much in the way of combat. In the trailers you see this cool scene in a dark jungle where Lara is taking out some soldiers, whilst this is in the game, its literally one quick sequence where you have no weapons, just a knife. There is stealth in the rest of the game of course, but I was hoping there were more areas like the one I just mentioned, instead of one litte sequence. Then we get to the "hubs". Do you feel like talking to everyone? I most certainly didn't because of the bad story, so good luck with that. I literally walked past most random civilian dialogue people simply muttering the phrase "I dont give a sh*t". Sure it gives you information about secrets and possible tomb locations, but as I said, I just didnt care. Then theres another issue: You will be locked from selecting certain outfits and using certain weapons for a big portion of the game. Now don't get me wrong, I understand the reasoning behind this, it's to "blend in", but I just found it really , really annoying. To end on a more positive note: The tombs are excellent. The new climbing mechanics work well The graphics are amazing. Excellent voice acting for Lara and Jonah Stealth is just as good as it was, though really easy due to bad AI. To sum up, if you liked Rise of the Tomb Raider, you will like this, BUT, you will feel it is inferior. I do recommend this game, but I would wait for a sale, especially if you loved Rise of the Tomb Raider. Seeing as though this is the last game in the trilogy, I do want it said that I really do hope they make more of these games, they are a joy to play.

MY REVIEW OF THE SHADOW OF THE TOMB RAIDER GAME

    In South America

The most significant difference that always characterised each Tomb Raider episode: the change of location. My preference is with the colder climate (this also means that this episode omits the Endurance mode) but it is always nice to see how a new location can affect gameplay. Areas with battle now allow Lara to go back into hiding by bathing in mud. An interesting concept - I particularly liked how she could move along the wall out of plain sight due to the overgrown flora. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NN7UCIAHsQ&t=17s

    Trinity

The bad guys return and Lara now encounters a leader called Pedro Dominguez. It is nice to add a face to Trinity this time and Pedro actually knows more of Lara than she thinks. Cutscenes are amazing with the usual high-quality voice acting on everybody's part and there is increased focus on Lara's childhood and father this time. There are a couple of twists here an there - as usual later on a new form of enemy appears to make the story more exciting. This alone does not make the plot totally different so the creators decided to include more peril by choosing artifacts with great power. Let's just say that Lara's race against Trinity has time factored in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwljTbmEjvw&t=4s

    Gameplay

You know how the developers add new elements even when it is not necessary. Gameplay in the previous two instalments was fast and dynamic enough. Still, there's new gear, of course. Overhang climbing is now possible with the use of special boots. I think this feature was unnecessary and thank god no puzzles were based on this. Grappling down from cliffs, however, is a nice new addition. We find all sorts of materials - beside upgrading our weapons we can craft pieces of clothing. Upper and lower body pieces are available but we can also acquire full body outfits. These add bonuses so getting dressed before a fight we can decide if we intend to aim for a more stealthy approach or go full guns blazing by putting on something that gives Lara health regeneration. And, naturally, we can give Lara the "old" look by applying skins from previous games (this is a purely cosmetic choice here). Other than these small changes or additional stuff gameplay mechanics remain the same. I liked the inclusion of air pockets during underwater sequences which made it possible to increase the time spent in such areas. Once again Lara can decipher various monuments (her language skills increase gradually) and there are tons of relics and letters to be found out there. You'll return to previous locations by using the camp system several times just to get that 100% completion. Graphics appear to be enhanced once again; I cannot comment on the latest RTX technology but everything else looked stunning as usual. Two more small adjustments done to walkthroughs: there are difficulty settings we can choose from but they are broken down into various elements we can adjust separately. Additionally, there is a possibility to make immersion better by allowing the NPCs to use their native language instead of English.

    Longevity

What else to say about Shadow of Tomb Raider? Another great entry in the series where there are more and much bigger tombs. The DLCs also focus on these extra challenges. The hub area we visit appears to be greater and there are many side missions to complete. It's worth investing time into these as getting the rewards will make Lara stronger. There is a New Game+ mode available with additional skills we can purchase only during this second walkthrough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdEfROL2Wx8&t=340s I had fun with the latest instalment. The puzzles were sometimes annoying (oh boy the one in the church was just awful!) but gave me a good challenge, nonetheless. Of all 3 episodes this one has the most interesting story and definitely the most satisfying end game boss battle.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider built on the parkour and combat component of the previous games and perfected every aspect of the game bringing together the perfect trilogy of the series. Not only were the game play mechanics of the game astonishing but the detail put into every scene was better then all the previous games and the graphics improved with every game making the game a sight to behold. I highly recommend this game.

I am now at 83 hours and I wanted to update my review. While I still strongly say that this game isnt worth full price (and i recommend waiting for it to go on sale), It is still a DECENT tomb raider game. After playing tomb raider 2013 again, I was wrong to say this game beats it. Although theres more features in this game, the story was so much stronger in 2013, and it feels like rise and shadow lost their way in terms of story telling. Especially in shadow. The Lara Croft that was presented to us is not even the same as the one in shadow (I cant say much about Rise because its been a long time since I played it). I will say the the Lara Croft in 2013 is more mature then the one we got in shadow (which is honestly puzzling how a writer can go backwards). A prime example is when, in the reboot, two pilots bail out of a rescue plane after a failed rescue attempt. Just as Lara was about to go help the first pilot, Roth grabbed her and told her she shouldnt help the pilots as there was more at stake, than the pilots lives. He tried to lecture her that she only knows about loss, and doesnt know much about making hard choices. She replied with "Im not going to choose to let them die Roth". In shadow, we have her steal a artifact (knowing that by doing so willl cause great catastrophy upon the world btw), but since she doesnt want trinity to have it, she still decides to take it. What is even better is, after all the death shes caused, she doesn't want to help the villagers out.......and when Jonah mentions it on the plane about how bad he feels for the people, Lara annoyingly keeps changing the subject back to finding the key. (she acually gets annoyed at Jonah btw) I could rant on and on but my biggest suggestion is, play tomb raider 2013, then play this. You will seriously laugh. Horrible writing but DECENT gameplay. I think Rise and Shadow shouldnt be apart of the Lore at all. Especially since the devs cant even make up their mind on what race Jonah should be. Also the fact I had to look up what happened to Sam is really annoying. Rise should of covered this (same with the dual pistols), but they decided to put it into a novel. Good job. summary: Its an OK game. Plenty to do (albeit alot of it being boring) but its semi enjoyable. question for the devs: How does Lara Croft look better in 2013 then in Rise or Shadow. Im not talking graphically, Im talking facial features. Its like you guys are scared to make a pretty female protagonist. Not saying shes totally ugly in Rise or Shadow but make her look like the 2013 trailer Lara for god sakes. Pros: -Good Graphics -Stunning underwater sections -tombs (a few challenges that really rack your brain) -photograph mode (makes for some wicked backgrounds) -smooth movement, climbing, jumping and rapelling. -guns sound way better and perform much better than previous two titles. Cons: -Story isnt terrible, but decently weak. -Unlocking many Perks provide no BIG usefulness unless planning for new game plus run (and trust me, its not better the second time) -Outfits in this game are very lacking. No shorts or jungle girl outfit????seriously?!? (my guess is due to objectification of women/Lara) -Laras character is noticeably weaker than the 2013 reboot. -Zero enemies after game completion -game stuck at 99% completion even with everything done. If you plan on doing this, please keep in mind it probably will bug out on you. Im just Trying to save you time. Overall score 7/10 Buy or wait for sale? Wait for sale.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the third game in the franchise’s modern era, and continues the Trinity storyline established in Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Everyone’s favourite English archaeologist, Lara Croft, must locate a powerful artefact that is hidden somewhere in South America, before Trinity can use it for their own agenda. The Good • The environment is gorgeous, featuring dense jungles, waterfalls, lakes, ancient villages, dark caves, and massive tombs containing some lethal traps. There’s more underwater exploration than previous games, which is something I definitely approve of. There’s also an interesting flashback to Croft manor. • My favourite aspect of Tomb Raider games is the puzzle solving, so I’m pleased that Shadow’s gameplay involves a nice balance of combat and puzzles. The optional challenge tombs in particular contain some massive ancient mechanisms, which felt really satisfying to solve. My favourite puzzles in the older Tomb Raider games involved raising and lowering the water level, and Shadow features a couple of good water puzzles. • Combat is enjoyable. Along her journey Lara will have to face Trinity soldiers, aggressive wildlife, and something else that I won’t spoil. There’s a greater emphasis on stealth kills. Lara still has the bow for getting silent headshots, but you can also cover her in mud and hide against walls like Arnold in Predator, hide in long grass, climb trees, and perform takedowns from underwater. When its time to go loud, you can use an assault rifle, shotgun, pistol, molotovs, and poison arrows which confuse enemies and make them attack their friends. Aiming weapons with a mouse feels responsive. • You can separately adjust the difficulty of combat, puzzles and exploration, although I played with all set to hard, and honestly I think most players will cope just fine with this. I especially liked the ability to turn off puzzle solving hints, and the white paint that shows you where to jump next, so that I could work out what to do myself without the game getting impatient and giving me the answer. • Voice acting is mostly good, including another excellent performance from Camilla Luddington as Lara. • It took me 24 hours to finish the story and all challenge tombs and side quests. • I was able to easily maintain 60 FPS and controls are fully rebindable. I’ve had a couple of crashes when exiting the game, but no problems during actual gameplay. • There’s an option to just hold a button during QTEs instead of mashing repeatedly. (I mean, I’d prefer no QTEs at all, but at least this is a small improvement). • This game is approximately 1000% more enjoyable than the Tomb Raider film that came out earlier this year, where Hollywood proved they still don’t understand videogame characters. The Bad • The story is a bit disappointing, and definitely doesn’t match the quality of the previous two games. The promise created by an intense opening just seems to fizzle out, especially in the second half. Its been said that a story is only as strong as its villain, and Shadow’s primary antagonist, the leader of Trinity, is just kinda boring. • The game seems to be in a permanent tutorial mode, frequently displaying messages about how to perform actions that you’ve already done dozens of times. For example, you’ll be running along the edge of a cliff, admiring the scenery, the lake below and the jungle in the distance, when suddenly you’ll see some floating text telling you how to do a swan dive for the 15th time. There’s no option to disable these messages, and I saw them all the way to the end of the game. Its immersion breaking, it spoils the mood, and it really needs to be patched. • You can’t toggle walk when using mouse/keyboard. Default movement speed is run, and you have to hold a button to walk. Walking is important when exploring narrow ledges and avoiding traps in dark caves. I ended up binding walk to a mouse thumb button which seemed like the most natural feeling button to hold in for lengthy periods of time, but it wasn’t ideal. You can toggle both sprint and aim down sights, so why no walk toggle? Again, this really should be patched. The Recommendation Shadow of the Tomb Raider has enjoyable puzzle solving and combat, but is let down slightly by a disappointing story. If you’re a fan of the franchise you should definitely buy it, but perhaps not at full price. If you’ve never played Tomb Raider before, I’d recommend playing Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider first. (Tomb Raider Anniversary is still my favourite, so you should check that out too).

I love the Start/ Beginning of the Tomb Raider. I love the Japan Setting. I love Syberia Setting & Syria Start. But Summer & Jungle. I was long time avoiding this Title to play, because i tought after Rise & Beginning this would be disappoiting for me. But it wasnt. +++ Level Design +++ Puzzles/ Tombs (including the Co Op ones) ++ Weapons/ Abilities/ Skill Tree many ways to kill ++ New Game Plus/ never beeing to hard with right Weapons/ Upgrades/ enough Heal Items/ Skills/ Right Tactic + many Stuff to find 100 %/ some easy/ some hard/ + 100 % Achievements doable/ Co Op Time/ Point Attack & only Bronze Level needed (did some Gold Single) + only 6 Trading Cards (not to much like 8-15) - Game Length to short if you rush it on Easy, game is fast finished - Paititi is biggest area, but there could be more big areals to discover/ no Open World - more Weapon Upgrades for DLC weapons, sometime first weapon full Upgrades is the best - no Chance to change the Story (not even rescueing Side Story Characters) - many Costumes no effect / no single part select of most of the Costumes I love it. Where is the next Tomb Raider Game?

The story? Wack. The dialogue? Wack. The characters? Wack. Exploration? Tight as fucc.

It seems like the developers didn’t exactly know what they wanted Lara Croft to be, and so she struggles to find an identity that is believable and makes sense. Lara oscillates between being an emotional, gentle, cutesy, light-hearted goody-two-shoes on the one hand, and a battle-hardened, dispassionate, cold-blooded murderer on the other hand. Within the first 30 minutes, it’s basically established that you are a mass killer responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians, without much of an emotional reaction from Lara apart from an indifferent “oops”. Weird flex, but ok. As soon as you engage with civilians one on one, however, you are the sweetest, most compassionate puritan imaginable, incapable of hurting a fly. Bi_tch, you just killed north of a thousand people, and will kill another thousand in combat throughout the game. The juxtaposition stretches suspension of disbelief way beyond its breaking point. Also strange: you only ever kill men. Where’s the female representation? Don't these men have family, hopes, dreams and fears as much as Lara does? The narrative of brave, oppressed female leaders vs. evil, male antagonists is pretty on-the-nose, dull and off-putting, which only manages to elicit an eye-roll. The heavy-handed virtue signalling yet again subverts any suspension of disbelief. The story is a pretty run-of-the-mill “save the local savages” Avatar affair. A mediocre story can be saved by great characters… but I’ve seen toast with more personality than these supposed “characters”. To add insult to injury, much of the dialogue is slow beyond belief. For some arcane reason, much of the most pointless filler dialogues are stretched out to an absurd degree. And in many conversations, there’s an awkward silence where the camera lingers on certain shots for a few seconds too long, just enough to make you feel uncomfortable. Especially after the first two games, and considering Lara has crawled through rivers of corpses, decapitated heads, limbs, rib cages, has murdered plenty of people and witnessed the supernatural, she really shouldn’t be as emotional as she is. So, the real question is: how can you merge the passionate yet naïve archaeologist/ explorer with the dispassionate executioner? You could explore the soft underbelly of Lara’s psyche: the regrets, doubts, apprehensions and fears she harbours after exposing herself to so much gruelling imagery. Give the whole thing a “Senua’s Sacrifice” spin. She’s stared death in the face innumerable times, and in turn exploring the heavy psychological toll it takes on her would be fascinating. Interestingly enough, this is exactly what the devs did in the “Nightmare” DLC, which was by far the most interesting content of the game story-wise. A real shame the DLC was so short and only scratched the surface of Lara’s mental state! Despite all of the above, the saving grace of the game is the exploration: it’s wonderful. Every minute you’re discovering something new. The ancient Incan and Mayan aesthetics are fantastic and a real blast to explore. Puzzling together the various stories of what happened throughout the game universe via 400-year-old accounts and diaries left by pioneers of the old world is vastly more interesting than the main story and its cardboard characters. The majority of the tombs are a joy to explore, and each tomb has its own unique story to tell. Fantastic! Despite all the criticisms, I consider SOTTR a great game worth your time.
