Lots of updates but the racing product hasn't changed enough (or really at all). I liked the original enough to throw a few bones down on this in Early Access day 1. There's tons of these games around that try to bring a little more "sim" to a simple top down driving experience. There is usually plenty of fun to be had. But they all ultimately cannot reach a level of enough "realism" because of the inherent boundaries of the game style. I listed many of these in my review of the original but I'll echo a few here since they remain; The fastest racing lines can be counter to the "serious" style. You plow through chicanes in a straight line. Every vehicle is better to be driven like a kart with lifting and coasting rather than actual braking save for a hairpin. In fact, you brake most in karts because of the tight track layouts. And you can still ride opponents through corners to your benefit.. I had hoped some of the new features the sequel brought, especially damage, would alleviate some of these shortcomings and make for a significant step forward. So far, no. The AI doesn't race in lines or a style with any awareness of the damage system. Sure it adds a layer of difficulty as you're the only one out there trying to avoid contact, but it didn't make the game more fun avoiding that contact. It's just you racing different. Definitely not a different that is more "real". Just different. The visual style, which I feel bad being brutal about again, has not changed at all. The menus are still bulbous and beyond ugly. And the game overall lacks any inherent style of its own. It's just... Blah. I think I used the words 'mobile', 'Flash', and 'stock' a lot in my review of the first and they're all applicable here. A unique style would've gone a long way. Even something like GeneRally has a unique look that is its own despite the simplicity. Apologies as I don't know why I harp so hard on that point, but it is what it is. It stands out. I guess my main point is that not much has really changed in the game overall. Things got added, but nothing changed. Which isn't only bad. There was plenty of good in the first game! Again, like the original, this brings more variety than most games of a similar style. Plenty of fun to be had and well worth checking out. There's tons of vehicles that all mostly feel different from one another. And now you can create and share your own through Steam Workshop (and the fact that by day two we already have Mario Karts and Pod Racers lets you know what the driving experience actually ends up like in the end). It should all add a little more extra fun and longevity than the original game. And all the modes are there that give you tons of choices. Of the new stuff, time trail is the most well implemented feature for me. I've already had tons of fun with that. The opponent ghosts and leaderboards are great. And one final positive point, the game is priced moderately again. You really shouldn't nitpick the way I have because you can just have fun. It is a small game full of simple fun. It is just that it isn't really very serious racing despite having pitstops, tire choices, and all that it does. It's definitely more MicroMachines than it is the aforementioned GeneRally. I recommend it just as much as I did the original. It definitely completely replaces the original with all the extras. In fact, it's more of a 'ultimate edition' than it is a sequel. I look forward to any additional features than sneak in before full release but I think most of the journey is done. I don't foresee AI overhauls or anything like that, but there will be more fun to be had in the form of tracks/cars/modes I'd imagine. I got 7+ hours out of the original and don't see why I would expect less here. Easy recommend.

Only good for AI races, trying to include yourself in a race is absolute torture as its hard to understand due to the locked camera angle, and if you even so as slightly touch the grass you lose a good 10 seconds

Fun racing game. Easy to learn, hard to master. Active community, but gawd huge skill gap if you're a new player going up against these veterans. Worth sinking the hours in, especially if you participate in some of the leagues in the UR2D2 E-Sports server!

Never done a steam review before... If you are interested in 2d racers then I think you need to buy into the Ultimate Racing 2D franchise. I do not know of any other 2D racer which has this level of content or customisability. It can certainly be played in a casual manner but is precise enough that it can be treated as a serious, rather than casual, game if desired. I often find myself practising different lines through corners increase my pace. So if you own the original should you upgrade? It basically plays the same as the original but has two extra tyre types, optional damage, optional penalties, vehicle editor, multi-class racing (I have already done Le Mans multi-class) and a steam workshop. Given the low price I strongly recommend fans of the original to upgrade. And this is before we consider the most important thing, the planned track editor.

Forget Rfactor, ACC/AC, RaceRoom, IRacing, etc etc. This is the premier racing sim. But, the dev wasn't dont at that. He wanted to go after Motorsport Manager and F1 Manager as he has now implemented the first iteration of a manager mode. Throw away your direct drive wheel, your pedals. Not needed. The best racers are now on U2dR2

This could have been an update to the original game, but considering the low price tag of both games I can't complain too much. It's pretty fun and the physics are good.

Game has a lot of content, a good deal of vehicles, modes and tracks to play on. With the promise of more content being added during early access. The games UI can be a tad overwhelming at first, it's a fast-paced game, so having a complex UI at the top with several elements to look at can be difficult. The vehicle physics are heavy and somewhat realistic, meaning you do have to choose a good racing line in order to succeed, the downside of the physics is that all the vehicles feel somewhat similar, and the speed difference between them is quite small. A Formula 1 car is barely any faster than a Sports car for instance, about 10% difference in lap times. The multiplayer I wasn't able to test, due to not having anyone locally, and there being no online games available at the time I played, but I'm sure it's a blast to play with friends locally in split-screen. There's a bit of customization available right now, which lets you adjust the power, weight and design of your vehicles. As well as share them via Steam Workshop, which might add to the replayability of the game. There is a time trial mode with leaderboards, which are reasonably populated, so you should be able to find times to compete against, even if there are no real-time opponents available online.
