I transferred over my save file from epic, so playtime is low here but like 60 hours on epic. Wonderlands is a good Borderlands game, it could have been the BEST Borderlands game given the theme and creative freedom. Whats here is decent for a single character and playthrough, but barren of content for end game and hardcore grinders. The new additions are legitimately great, like spells replacing grenades and the freedom of character choice and skill trees at any time, but for those 2 upsides we got more 5 downsides. Wonderlands is generic DnD to a T. Skeletons, trolls, a mighty hero facing an evil ruler, its VERY generic given the entire theme is controlled by TINY TINA, the embodiment of a TNT stick that huffed too much glue. I was expecting more ridiculousness, the game is just the Borderlands 2 DLC up scaled to Borderlands 3 hardware with some tweeks. Thats not to say the game is bad visually or the levels are bland, i was just expecting more. As mentioned, Wonderlands is terrible for people that want that end game grind. The top class is spore warden plus any other class, the weapons are shockingly bland and on launch has a disappointing amount of legendaries, even fewer legendaries are any good. The game also moved away from boss grinding and moved to this new "Chaos Chamber" thing. Its basically a roguelite but instead of each run being determined in the actual run, you just repeat the same levels with the same loadout against the same enemies until you find that weapon you were looking for, then its MORE boring same EVERYTHING. The Chaos Chamber has a meta, as mentioned with the top class, but in the chamber you literally NEED to run that class or you WILL die far too often. Its insane how they give us more freedom in classes but left out the most diverse thing about Borderlands, THE GUNS. The Majority of weapons have VERY similar stats between manufacturers, the "BAZILLION GUNS" tagline for the franchise would not work here at all. Lighting SMG is always the same, Corrosive SMG is always a laser, very few differences between weapons from the same gun maker when you hit max level and all the guns have the same level. DLC is also a MAJOR gripe i have. Instead of a traditional expansion with a new theme, they opted in for ANOTHER version of the Chaos Chamber. Instead of getting a chest, you get orbs that can be used to spin the loot wheel and you might get another bad legendary. Going back to the theme of the game, the "wonderlands" part loses its luster when you realize its generic DnD even in the DLC. So much wasted potential. To end this review i will say some positives. The game looks great and despite the development being almost entirely during Covid lockdown, still has a great amount of side stuff and content and new ideas. The antagonist is LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than Borderlands 3's, and although this game lacks the emotional punch of the Dragon Keep DLC, its still a somewhat good story. The new additions and changes are REALLY good, the recharging spells, the multiclass system, the create-a-character is great, so many new features to the franchise work really well here. If they do turn this into a side series inbetween Borderlands releases, i would love to see each fan favorite character have their own Wonderlands. Krieg, Maya, Lilith, can even bring back Scooter and Roland. Right now, i don't regret buying the game again, and look forward to replaying it again when new content drops or updates fix some things, but the game needs a better end game and better overall expansions.

Same Borderlands gameplay that you know and love. Compared to Borderlands 3, Wonderlands has much better writing and improved graphics. The D&D-inspired setting is also a nice break from the typical Borderlands setting. Too bad Randy Pitchford is a creep though.

Pros: -Still has that solid gunplay flow from BL3, just fine tuned now with magic and mischief. -There's even more QoL, enemy variety is fun, and the game has some great boss fights. -The DND spirit is felt throughout this game. From spells, npcs, overworld, or Tina's commentary throughout the game, Wonderlands is a love letter that beautifully blends the chaos of tabletop and Borderlands. -Being able to create your own "fatemaker" feels fun with a ton of options to either make your dream hero or a complete monstrosity. The build diversity alongside gives you several options to slay baddies. -This is the best story since Anthony Burch's departure. The Dragon Lord is a great villain, and there is a fun whimsy to the game's tone that is uplifting and charming. -I LOVE the Chaos Chamber. Your mileage may vary with this mode, but it's great to jump in at any time to face a dungeon full of enemies. Cons: -My primary critique is that the season pass (even on sale) is still massively overpriced for what it is. Unless you REALLY like the chaos chamber, you aren't missing that much by skipping it. Hopefully, we get some legitimate one-shot expansions down the line. -Nitpicky, but the music is more atmospheric then the bombastic sonic you're used to with Borderlands and I miss it here. Your preference in tone will determine how you feel on this one though. Final Note: To those who waited, whenever you jump into Wonderlands, you will have a blast alone or with friends!

Getting the cons out of the way: * Not a mainline title * Gun variety doesn't feel great * Only one action skill at a time, feels weird considering how much gear and skill trees try to buff action skills. Not sure how you fix this though without either making players OP or making AS feels worthless. * Someone else mentioned it on the melee classes (and melee in general), that if you're going to put emphasis on it between skills/gear etc, make sure you add some depth to the melee gameplay. As of right now, even with the buffs it adds I actively avoid it. If they decide to improve on it, look at games like warframe and how they have move-sets for their melee. Pros: * Best story telling in a long time in a borderlands series (if not best) - specifically framing it in a D&D type campaign with boss encounters + overworld. It's the most engaged I've been in a story in a long time. * Class system feels fresh, things mostly feel balanced and fun in terms of being able to choose a play style * Game doesn't just shove legendary loot down your throat constantly * Characters feel rewarding to build and play. Building out a character doesn't feel as daunting as the rest of the series did. Summary: Take this from the perspective of someone who has been preordering Borderlands games since the original one (with the exception of the last two because of anti-consumer tactics) : Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is flat out a better game than BL3 if having fun and being entertained is your goal. BL3 is stale and phoned in by comparison. If you can get past the lack of gun variety, you will be rewarded with a rich story with fun gameplay mechanics. Edit: At level cap now and am starting the DLC * DLC - So far have played through two of them , they take about an hour (generous). At least the two I tried (coiled Captors, Glutton's Gamble) don't feel like a great value. * Boss drops - If you're farming specific gear, I guess that's not really a thing anymore and has been replaced by the chaos chamber. * Chaos Chamber - Geared towards min-maxing. If you're into tweaking builds, they've basically streamlined the process having everything from the bank to the New-U station right there. May get boring/repetitive if you're doing it alone. * Just discovered this game has no cloud saves after formatting my computer, Well that sucks

Disclaimer: Take the not-recommended with a grain of salt. I'll explain the reasons below I would generally recommend the game in its current state, however there are some major red flags which I believe need to be addressed by Gearbox and make me question the future of the game and the companies existence to its continued support. Positives Disclaimer: I'll keep these rather short, but they might help you decide -Story is more enjoyable than bl 3 and writing has significantly improved. There are some minor annoyances with certain characters, but overall the new characters are all fairly fun and the main cast all do the job adequately -gear progression and difficulty during the campaign is quite nice. I really disliked how bl3 showered you in loot from the get go and how common legendaries were early on. I feel like they found a much better state here where you actually can get excited by blue items all the way up to max level (if they are a good weapon type / one you enjoy) -Effects feel nice and impactful. They did a great job on Spell Effects and Class Abilities -The maps look amazing and the overworld adds a lot of flavor to the setting Negatives Disclaimer: these are a bit more extensive. Understand that some of these are personal issues based on playstyle, which may well be irrelevant to you -Let's get the big one out of the way. The "PLCs" (dlcs) are ridiculously priced for what they are as of right now (3/4 released). DLC 3 was better, but still a long way from what we should expect from Gearbox by now. Calling them "content" is a stretch as they are basically just a few rooms of fighting with some added gimmicks. It just feels like a major waste of potential and makes me doubt the future of this game. -Balancing is whack, both when it comes to weapons / spells as well as "classes". Especially the Spellshot gets so much from stacking a single attribute, while others just struggle to scrape enough dmg together. Spellshot literally pairs well with every other class and it speaks volumes when you actually don't even have to be spell focussed to get great benefits from using it as your second class. This issue is further amplified by ... -The frequent increases in chaos levels (endgame system) is a major problem due to how it breaks balance over and over. When they barely started fixing chaos 35, they dropped another 15 on top leading to a state where even previously durable builds now can get health-gated by trash mobs. The absolute endgame state right now is horrendous ... it's worse than bl2 op levels imo with how few builds (mostly abusing busted interactions) can handle them. -Chaos levels themselves. It's just not an endgame system with a lot of longevity. Too repetitive. They seem to think this alone will suffice for now, but it will just lead to burnout. -Lack of farmable loot. Way too much of it is not farmable and the best way to acquire most pieces is to simply get lucky on world drops (i.e. back to chaos chamber). Incredibly annoying as at least for me being able to farm a weapon on the side while levelling made the replay experience of previous bl games a lot better. -Invisible walls. Smaller issue of a bigger problem (see next points). They were incredibly lazy here imo. There are tons of invisible walls that feel like you are constantly on rails set out by the devs instead of them letting you go around exploring. -Lack of skips / incredibly tenuous quests for replay. I've played through most of the story 3 times and let me tell you ... it's not great on new playthroughs. There are so many places you can't do anything more than wait for some dialog that you've heard 5 times before. I would have hoped they learned something from bl3 where this was also an issue. In fact, it feels deliberately designed to discourage such behaviour as there are many times you have to interact with an NPC 2-3 times in the same location. This won't allow you to run to the next place you have to go early. I understand that they want ppl to experience the quests, but rn this just cripples enjoyment for multiple playthroughs. It also adds to the "on-rails" experience mentioned when it came to invisible walls. -Classes are weird rn. There is less build diversity than bl 3 due to the limited skill trees and that most class combos can do 1 (or 2 at most) builds between them (some have almost no synergy of course). Additionally, a lot of the information is still obfuscated as always (which types are additive, which multiplicative) and a lot of nodes feel meaningless (significantly more so than they did in bl3). I reckon the last point is down to the additional attributes we get from rings and amulet this time around, but let me tell you. Speccing points, especially early, never felt so unsatisfying in bl before. Pweh that's it. I have a lot of fun with the game right now, but there are some major issues the game has right now (both design and balance-wise). I would recommend it only if you know you enjoy this type of game and you aren't someone who cares about targeted farming and "speed-running" when playing.
