Great fun and value for money even at early access. Not like vampire survivor, you get 4 abilities, a basic attack, a secondary spell that has no cool down and 2 other spells that have cool downs (all spells consume mana) Your spells and basic attack are things you need to aim.

An awesome Rogue-like gem! The game feels very well made, the animations for spells especially are really good, the artstyle, arts for the enemies and particles, musics, sound effects are really well as well. I was absolutely hooked to this game after 5 minutes of playing. The game has stats like Crit Chance, Crit Damage, Attack Speed, Speed of your character, Ranged and Melee Damage Resistance etc. which can be upgraded after you finish a map. There are also Basic, Expert and Primary Skills and those skills have elemental effects. I could find Arcane, Fire and Lighting but there might be more because I just started playing. There is a level system which unlocks certain features, weapons and emblems/perks. The elemental side of skills are really cool and you can have some awesome builds combined with Emblems. Emblems are passive skills that help you with your skills, survivability, stat boosts etc. Combining everything and you get an really solid and good gameplay. I had an awesome run where I went with a lighting elemental damage/skill build. The emblembs are really well crafted where they go really good with the spells and enchances them. For example, in my lighting run, an emblem makes it so that lighting based skills has a chance to stun. I combined this with an emblem where stunned enemies take a percentage based damage over 3 seconds. And I combined these with an emblem where I heal based on the mana I spent. This was especially really good for survival and my lightning skills all spends mana. To cherry on top, I got an emblem where for every 10 mana you spend a random enemy gets stunned so this chained so good with the other perk where a stunned enemy gets damaged. This is one example of how great the game synergies emblembs with spells. Of course these emblems are randomly given to the player and the player has the choice to choose one out of 3 so I was a bit lucky with my lighting run but this is one of the examples on how the game lets you have these crazy builds which are really fun! All in all, this game is really solid especially for it's price point. I would totally recommend this game if you like rogue-like games. I honestly cannot wait for future updates and it's early access is to a really great start for me!

I bought Neophyte on itch.io back in January 2022 soon after it came out. Been playing it since through each update and had a great time even then. Now it's out on Steam and I didn't mind buying it again as dev's not able to support Steam keys for previous purchasers. $3 + $3 is still an absolute steal for the entertainment I got from the product. For the game itself - cute and simple action arena roguelite. Pick upgrades and spells as you clear waves of baddies, and advance through difficulty ranks as you accumulate wins. Still no controller support at the time of writing but KB/M controls work just fine. Looking forward to what future holds for this nifty title from a solo dev.

Neophyte is awesome, it's another one of those Vampire Survivors style games and this one does everything extremely well. The general gameplay of Neophyte is wave/round based, enemies spawn in from the corners of the level and will attempt to kill you, you are equipped with 4 spells to aid yourself in beating the game. The game will offer you new spells throughout your run and this allows you to really play the way you want. You have things like fire balls, lighting strikes and even passive skills like teleport or stonewall. On top of picking up new spells along your run, you also have 12 upgradable stat types which you can upgrade and really customise how your kit will work, anything from, super fast fire rate builds, high mana builds or even glass cannon style builds. There's also these perks you pick up which do all kinds of things, adding a trail of fire to your dash or even increasing your critical damage and chance. All of this really makes the game feel unique each time. One big thing that this game does differently to many other games in the genre is how it gives you full control of your player and attacks, this really makes the game super engaging and action packed. There are 5 extra difficulty levels which you can unlock by beating lower difficulty levels. As for out of game progression currently you have unlocks which are rewarded through points that you earn while playing. This reward system unlocks new spells, perks and more. You also can complete the collection books to display all of the items in the game. The out of game progression here is currently a little on the weaker side so hopefully we can see cosmetic unlocks, new characters or some more unlocks releases throughout early access. There are also a good amount of achievements to acquire which are another great incentive to progress. The art in Neophyte is really good, its good old standard pixel art that's really well presented. The colours all fit so nicely and all of the contrasting shapes really do work great. The game also has some really good UI art for all of the perks and spells. The music here is surprisingly good, I didn't expect to be so impressed but the 8/16 bit tracks with also some very awesome distortion guitar was really cool to hear when the action picks up. As for performance, it's pretty good here, there were a couple small dips below 60fps in the action which was strange because the game is very lightweight. I also played on a super high spec pc (I7/3060) so I'm expecting that these are just minor issues and will be resolved soon. I've experienced bugs in my time so far. Overall Neophyte is one of the really outstanding games in this uprising genre, it's extremely cheap for all of the content on offer with plenty more on the way. It is super rewarding and challenging. I am really looking forward to the upcoming updates! 100% would recommend you give the game a try!

A very unique "survivor" game. In my opinion better then the big Vampire Survivor. More possibilites and each run is truly unique. Please add more content!!<3

Currently, the game has three small battle rooms and about 2hr 30min of content(amount of time it takes to get all the unlocks) I can't speak for what the game will be, only what it is at the moment of this review. It lacks synergies with the skills and is primarily % based on increases. This leads to largely uninteresting choices as you get new skills/power-ups. Its enemy variety is sparse, and the game mech you must deal with is on the simplistic side. Very little will change from run to run that will push you to change how you play. I wouldn't say I am very good at these games, so I was surprised that I unlocked everything with only one death(that had more to do with a lack of attention due to boredom). Of the horde-style games that are coming out every other day, I would say this is probably one of the weaker ones. It's good if you want to complete the game casually, but it will not engage or challenge you after a few min of gameplay.

Cool game but no permanent upgrades or any other sense of progression so you can just pass the game in <1 hour

Fantastic little game and especially for the price. I think the developer could charge a couple more bucks and it would be justified. As good as the game is I have some criticism, because I think it could be great. I'm very happy with the last couple hours but don't see myself returning to this game again as it has now become a little repetitive and mundane and I think it could be adjusted to allow for a TON of replay value. Criticism: The difficulty scaling is what kills this game from having any replayability. The last round where you beat the boss doesn't feel that much more difficult than the first round of the game. Because the enemies are so easy, this would make any real advancement of the spells/skills overpowered. If the enemies are more difficult this will allow for the spell/ability/skill advancement that this game needs to feel fun, exciting, and have one round be completely different from the next. Skill advancement in the game feels more like taking your daily vitamins than like picking up the chainsaw for the first time in DOOM. Yes, it is helpful, but not even really that necessary. The only skills you will ever need to improve through tomes is Life regen and Mana regen. 103% attack speed in round two is exactly the same as 100% attack speed in round one and feels pretty much the same as 150% attack speed in the final round of the game. (you would be LUCKY to get 150% attacks speed by then). Imagine if you could get to 1000% increased attack speed, and imagine if the enemies were difficult that you NEEDED to be that strong? If you look at a game like vampire survivor, when you start out in the game you are weak, puny, killing a single enemy is difficult. 10 minutes later you are like Gandalf with a shotgun, busting thousands of enemies up and so you really FEEL those changes. From the first round to the last round I don't feel much change in this game. I just pick melee punches spell, fire chakra circles, hold down mouse one and two, and space bar dash around the board. This does not change in the last round vs the game boss, i'm still doing the same thing and the only difference is I can cast more fire chakras. Another smaller issue: the pace of the game. I want faster, harder rounds. Mopping up some of these waves or even just the last few weakling baddies feels like a chore. I respect that the developer thought of a lot of great ideas for emblems to do different strategies. There's all kinds of cool things you could try. Corner yourself, create an earth wall that blocks enemies and then shoot piercing spells through all the enemies, then teleport to another corner of the map and do it again. Hey, that's cool, but you will fail 10 times trying to make that work and you will win easily, every time with punches + fire circles that you can get right away every round. Some of the spells require a lot of synergy to have a chance of being effective, but two of the most basic spells that are available right away work perfectly almost regardless of what you do the rest of the game. Thanks to the developer for making a nice little game. I hope my review is helpful and I hope when it comes out of early access it's a big hit.
