I loved playing this game on my Switch, and I'm just happy I get to play with higher frame rates now on PC. 60 FPS is a huge difference.

It may not look as pretty as Monster Hunter World, but i'm 5 hours in and the amount of quality of life and new features that are in this game is insane. For instance: <*> Armor and weapons no longer are stored in the same inventory box as the rest of your items; they're also organized in the equip menu by armor set, and weapon type, meaning you can easily find what you want, instead of sifting through pages of different item types, or trying to remember which identical, different colored icon is which weapon or armor piece. <*> The palamute as a combat companion and a mount is insanely good, allowing for fast traversal, and movement at full speed while sharpening or consume other items between fights. <*> The action bar as a second, separate shortcut menu is amazing; so much more hotkey access. <*> The Wirebug allows for even more insane traversal, by letting you set up custom grapple points in the level, or by letting you simply make temporary ones to recover from knock up/backs. <*> The MKB controls are by default tolerable, with only one or two keys I wanted to change by default (the wirebug button is a 'hold' action, bound to MMB, and expects you to press it on conjunction with LMB, RMB, MB4 and MB5 depending on what you want to do--which is mostly just uncomfortable, not impossible). <*> The game doesn't really waste your time early on, instead opting to let you jump right into hunting after a single tutorial, making the other tutorials optional, to let you get into the meat of the game as soon as possible. I have a feeling I'm going to like the rest of the game too.

I hit monsters repeatedly with big ass weapons. They roar and i do it again. They Die. I make amour and more big ass weapons from their rotting corpses. I do this again and again and again till Elden Ring is released. Great Game. Best MH game ever made.

Monster Hunter Rise feels like a game that would be a 9.5/10 if Monster Hunter World didn't exist. But it does, and so Monster Hunter Rise feels like a game that's a 9/10...but I find myself constantly disappointed in the little ways that it differs from World. I had over 500 hours in Monster Hunter World, and another 400 more after Iceborne. I only have 100+ hours into Rise, and I already feel like I've done everything worth doing. I'll still play, because the game IS good, but I just can't help feeling let down in some way. TL;DR, the game is good, but I wish it were better. First, let me start off with saying that combat in Rise is definitely the most fluid combat has ever been in Monster Hunter. Actually using your weapons feels amazing. However, this is a double-edged sword, as the sheer amount of options you have in a fight drastically reduces the difficulty of the actual fights themselves. No monster in this game truly ever felt challenging to me. I found most of the monsters very interesting and even cool, but not challenging. The biggest contributor, in my opinion, is the Wirefall recovery mechanic. Wirefall recovering means you can remove yourself from a monster's aggression to a safe distance to heal, at minimal risk since there are only a few monsters in the game that have multi-hit, auto-tracking moves that are capable of punishing it. Here's a subjective opinion that I fully acknowledge as such: I dislike Rampages. It is not the content that I play a Monster Hunter game for. If you've experienced a Rampage, I think you can at least understand my position. Another subjective opinion: I hate the Talisman system. I won't go into the specifics of the math itself, but the Talisman melding is a gacha system. It feels bad to have to constantly feed material into a gamble box that you know you're going to lose. It feels bad to know the math behind it and know that an ideal talisman is a 1/390,000,000,000 chance, and that an exceptional talisman is 1/1,000,000,000, and that a great talisman is at least a 1/2,700 chance. An Attack decoration in World was a 1/200 chance, by the way. It feels bad that the optimal way of farming material to throw into the gamble box is gotten through either Rampages or farming the final boss of the game in a disappointing fight. It feels bad knowing that every incremental improvement to your Talisman means the next incremental improvement will be exponentially more unlikely. Now, I'll ramble off a bunch of small things that I minorly dislike. I dislike the Petalace mechanic. I don't want to prepare for a hunt in the hunt itself by taking time to run through a route to gather Spiribirds, I hate how it affects the pacing of the game. Why aren't there investigations? If you want to farm a monster, you can only do it through repeating a quest with the same cast of monsters, the same map, the same environment, the same everything except the positioning depending on day/night cycle. Why do monsters rarely interact with each other? They don't do anything to each other unless you're in the zone with them, and if neither are mountable, they just roar at each other and leave. Why do monsters not chase you down to another zone when they're enraged, only when you stinkmunk them? Why do monsters not have a proper nest in the maps, and just sleep on a random spot on the ground? All of it feels very telling that the game was meant to have segmented zones like in previous Monster Hunter games, but only changed to an open map because of the popularity of World, without really going through the effort of making it feel like a world. Why are lobbies limited to 4 players? If you have more friends than that, it gets awkward fast. Why do Village quests not even go into high rank? Why is the story so minimal? Why do Hinoa and Minoto read the thoughts of the big bads? Why not just import every monster from World into Rise since you have the models and animations and all that jazz? Why are there only 4 Elder Dragons (I don't count the 2 big bads since they're hardly a fight)? Why is every large monster immediately aggressive to you instead of some being passive till you hit them? I just find myself asking myself so many of these small 'Why?' questions when, really, the answer is probably budget and time constraints as World was the main game and Rise was made by a separate team.

Now that I've hit endgame (again) for Rise, it's time for some *SPOILER FREE* thoughts from a veteran MonHun boomer, someone who's stuck with this franchise since the OG game on PS2. This game is overall fantastic, and the biggest reason for that to me is the added mobility. Never before has MonHun's gameplay been this quick and stylish, and it's all thanks to the addition of the Wirebug mechanic. Those who've stuck with these games since pre-World know how much commitment the movement has taken until recently, the purposeful clunkiness to them that was involved in older titles, it was part of what made those older games so difficult in comparison. But now if you whiff a swing (with a Greatsword, for example), there's nothing but a short cooldown to keep you from not only pulling yourself into another swing, but also closer to your target. It all feels incredibly satisfying. That brings me to the topic of difficulty. This game is VERY easy for experienced players, I'd wager its no more difficult than vanilla World, even. Just like in World, there's a lot of options for hunters to take advantage of and forgiveness that makes playing Rise an absolute breeze for the most part. If you happen to get punished by a monster and take a rough hit, you can just yank yourself out of further harm's way and into a better position to heal up thanks to the Wirebug, like a get out of jail free card that happens to be on a cooldown. Even the monsters themselves are incredibly scaled down compared to their older iterations to the point where previously notorious ones aren't nearly as adrenaline pumping to fight as they once were. It's my hope that Sunbreak aims to alleviate this issue in some regard. I also hope for a hefty amount of content with that expansion, which is the only other issue I have with Rise. It's got more than World's base release, but it's still rather lacking. It's hard to ask for a content-rich MonHun post Generations Ultimate, as I'm 1000% sure we'll NEVER have a release as expansive as that until maybe a decade or two from now. It's going to take A LOT of work just to bring previously existing monsters into a brand new game that involves brand new mechanics and such, so I pray to the Capgods that they're up to the task. That being said, while I do miss the ball crushing difficulty and the vast amount of content of pre-World titles, it in no way keeps me from coming back to Rise even after I've topped up my hunter nearly to her limits. It's just too fun to play, and I felt the same with World. Despite all of these complaints, I've put hundreds of hours into both of these recent titles. Whether you're a brand new hunter or coming from World and its expansion, or if you're a veteran not stuck in the "glory days" as some would put it, I wholeheartedly recommend picking up Monster Hunter Rise.
