Grim Earth Features

OMG, look at the Earth ... it's Grim!

Grim Earth is a 2D platform game inspired by SNES/Amiga era gameplay, with a blend of action, exploration and puzzle solving. It features hand drawn art, a dry sense of humour and is free of bloody gore ... although there are plenty of explosions, alien splats and flying robot parts!

5000 years from now, a series of apocalyptic events have shaped our once beautiful home into an entirely different world. It's not all bad news though. Countless alien invasions have made it a vibrant place to live and biodiversity is at an all time high, although most of it is not too friendly and should be avoided.

  • Featuring hand-drawn art and keyboard-typed code, created over five years by a single developer ... help!

  • Master the Upgrade Transport Network to reach new heights, but watch out for hacked terminals or you'll pop!

  • Unlock hidden chests to collect and share reality-altering hexadecimal codes. Is this all just a simulation?

  • Explore XP locked areas and speed through timed challenges: designed for the more experienced adventurer.

  • Super realistic physics: you can't fall from an infinite height without consequences. All those other games were lying to you!

  • Customize your spacesuit, maybe cos-play as a bee ... or even an ant?

Grab your spacesuit (the air's not so great) and go on a retro-platform-game adventure!

Really cute platformer with some sorta eldritch aspects? Reminds me a lot of nier automata in terms of the world design. Gameplay is great, writing is funny and well written, sound is great (except the laser sound its kinda bass-y?) buy it, very worth it

So I haven't played for long yet (just an hour there's about), but Grim Earth is so far everything I could have hoped for. The story is charming, the characters cute. The enemies... stupid. And mean. Especially the ones that have eyes! Gameplay is traditional 2D sidescrolling platforming. The likes of which I used to enjoy back in the 16 bit era. The gameworld is split into numerous stages which is great. You only get one health bar with health packs hidden around but usually only a handful per area. Likewise weapons are also scarce; unfortunately pockets and bags have yet to be invented in Grim Earth, so ladders and signs banning carrying exposed firearms both mean losing your weapon. Stupid ladders. Stupid signs. The challenge, for me at least, was spot on for what I was hoping for -- a fun, relaxing game. But others might want it to be beefed up a bit. Dying simply means restarting the current section, losing some points, and XP (which seems to be based on accumulated points). Although I've yet to see XP used for anything. While I died frequently, and to replay sections over, it never felt unfair or annoying thanks to the frequent check points. I've yet to beat the boss near the end of the stage currently available in Early Access, but it's just a matter of time, learning its move set, and managing the limited ammo available for the fight. There are currently no difficulty options, and asides from perhaps offering a higher difficulty, I don't currently feel Grim Earth needs easier enemies. Some accessibility options, on the other hand, would be nice -- such as automatically picking up health and ammo. Thankfully, the Grim Earth appears to have a system in place that could provide players with accessibility features in the form of codes. Although a menu for them would be nice to have eventually. Lastly, it's great to see that Grim Earth retains the graphical presentation I've come to love from early Clockwork Pixels games. Clean, crisp, vibrantly coloured, and with a lovingly hand drawn aesthetic. I'll never get tired of this graphic style. I'm hoping Grim Earth does well on enough Steam that Clockwork Pixels with consider selling their earlier games here too.
Review in progress (just like the game itself still in early access)
The first time I run this game was a year ago. That was the first section of Grim Earth where players can fully obtain game experience they used to face. We've had understanding what the picture look like, who the characters are, and basic mechanics. That was completely finished level with hidden areas, puzzles and bosses. Second chapter allows to dive in lore deeply. Astronaut finds out where he came from and where others are. Now we know the main enemy and some-kind-of a mission. Puzzles have the same key but now we're going to overcome zero gravity. The passing through the second section is much faster but 'lack of space' can easily be compensated with more jokes about in-game violence and A.I. feelings. And there are more little things to observe in each area. I'm looking forward to play the full game. But I still can't get a small reward for my sweaty tryings and in-game flawlessness. And there's no understanding what this 'XP' means. I can farm more crystals but what for? I love the visual style but sometimes I can't get enough depth. Farther objects sometimes looks like they are in the same distance as the main character is. Default layout fits NES Controller exactly. But sometimes I've felt confused using the same button for shooting, taking objects and entering the doors playing with XBOX360 gamepad. I still highly recommend this game for all indie platformer games lovers. Just chill and get some fun from each playable area.
