Nine years later...

Fort Zombie originally saw limited release on three digital download platforms, two of which are long defunct. Missing for the last couple of years, there have been regular requests to offer it again. This download is the original game from 2009, which should run on most modern systems. It is offered here for the players and modders who requested a clean, legal copy of the original code. NO FURTHER UPDATES ARE PLANNED BY THE DEVELOPERS.

Product Notes

The game supports keyboard and mouse on a standard PC screen. Your camera and inventory controls shift from FPS to isometric like many modern RPG’s.

This product is the last public build released several years ago and is offered as is.

About the Game

FORT ZOMBIE IS BACK!

Back by popular demand, the ground-breaking cult classic indie game that kick-started the modern Zombie Survival genre: Fort Zombie.

“We have one chance. Find a strong place, and band together. Build our defenses. Gather supplies. Arm ourselves for the fight and save as many souls as we can. Take back our town, our lives, our world from the hungry dark.

That wave will break over this town like a tsunami and take the last of us with them… unless we fight back.”

NOTE: THIS GAME IS THE ORIGINAL LEGACY CODE FROM 2009, RELEASED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE PLAYERS WHO WANTED ACCESS TO IT.

WARNING: NO FURTHER UPDATES are planned for this version of Fort Zombie.

Fort Zombie was released in 2009 as a game without a genre: no one had ever attempted this combination of game mechanics before! It is a focused-scope, casual single-player RPG and strategy title of survival during an epic zombie Apocalypse.

The game world revolves around a single building – your Fort. Secure your base of operations and then spend the game visiting the mission-specific chunks of Piety, Indiana, the small American town that surrounds you. Search for weapons, supplies, ammunition and the most important resource of all—fellow Survivors.

Instead of a major city or a sprawling countryside, the player must focus effort on building up a single structure, finding and training Survivors to battle zombies, and venturing out into town on missions…all while the clock ticks steadily down toward zero hour, when an Apocalyptic wave of zombies from a neighboring city will crash over the town.

Targeted directly at the after-work gamer, Fort Zombie was the first debut of many game concepts and features that would be picked up and popularized in the games that followed afterward, including Day Z, Project Zomboid, Dead Rising, State of Decay.

Features

  • Choose one of three buildings – the school, the prison, and the police station – as your Fort Zombie, each one with its own strengths and weaknesses!

  • Real time movement and combat keep the tensions level high while trying to achieve objectives before your characters run out of ammunition, food, or luck!

  • Dozens of zombie types, some with special abilities derived from their half-remembered lives before becoming undead!

  • Piety, Indiana, a variable 3D town, created using Kerberos’ mix-and-match tile system, for maximum replayability. PhysX® engine adds to the mayhem!

  • Dozens of town locations to search (stores, restaurants, gas stations, ruins, homes) and countless items to find and use in building up The Fort or building up your group characters (food, fuel, generators, tools, guns, etc.)

  • “Collectible” NPC’s and Survivor families give players access to the Lore of the game, and unlock surprising new abilities—try to find them all!

Was on 4HP on a survivor mission I met a little girl and an 86 year old man, both of which denied my offer to join my group, left the safe area and died in 5 seconds outside of where they denied me. 10/10 would recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1ituTb3Y40

This game hails from a golden age where factor was favored over form. The best way to describe this game would be: Runescape but with guns and survival elements. Combat hits based on dice-rolls depending upon character skill levels (finesse, blunt, rifle, etc). You can build traps and fortifications to slow down incoming attacks on your base. Clean inventory system, looting sucks but if it were easy, what fun would that be? Outfit your guys with weapons that are available to you, they will not fire if they don't have ammo. I don't know why this was never recommended to me, was literally right up my alley. Had to have a fever dream about this game before I remembered it.

This rough looking and buggy game is a actually a fun little hidden gem. If you can get around the graphics and figure the game out you will have a great time. For $4 you cant really go wrong.

Is it janky? Yes. Is it buggy? Yes. Will it crash often? DEFINITELY Is it worth a buy? GOD DAMN RIGHT YOU ARE! This is THE definitive Zombie Survival game in the world, the features alone on paper make it better than any others. You NEED to take the time out to learn the game, get used to the controls, the way hit markers work. It's ALL NUMBERS. Real RPG Number Crunching. So get a build you like. (I recommend playing as Police officer and giving more points to Clubs) Take it slow And most of all... STAY SAFE SURVIVORS. This is Ben Riley in Fort Piety Indiana! For those interested in this game, I have a Let's Play of the game. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLncknXDr_WksLSibEdRspnAnBG7UeciRB For people familiar with the game, this is how it runs on the final battle with a mid range-modern gaming pc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CUZ8FO84vI

This game meant everything to me when i was in middle school (Im 20 now). This was the first true zombie survival game and met my personal idea for the perfect zombie game and i lost many nights of sleep to this game. This version seems to crash alot but don't let that discourage you. Give it a try and im sure youll love it as much as i do. Was honestly surprised they added this to steam finally. Its been greenlit for years and the devs have been silent forever. But ive even been hearing rumors of a Fort Zombie 2. Im very curious why they went from abondoning this game to possibly making a sequel. But maybe the sequel is just a rumor. I've always felt the State of Decay games were the spiritual successors to fort zombie. You have to buy this game and give it a chance. Dont let my low game time confuse you. Ive been playing this game for damn near a decade. If youre like me this game is your zombie apocalypse wet dream.

Alright party people, sit your asses down because I'm bouta talk to y'all about the classic Fort Zombie Does this game look like a five year old took a shit on a canvas paper and they used it as their art style? You bet your ass it does Does it have gun toating zombies that will occassionally kill you in one hit making you have to restart the mission you almost finished? Oh yea, it does Does it have shitty AI pathfinding that likes to get stuck on stupid shit and run around in circles like retards with the IQ of a ham sandwich? Oh yea baby, we got it! Does this game still make my dick rock hard when I play it always making me want to come back for more? You bet your grandpappy's left nut it does! SERIOUS REVIEW The graphics and sound quality are shit for it's time especially when you consider that Left 4 Dead had been released roughly a year before this one and it has more than a few bugs. The open world survival and zombie themes might sound a bit dated and over used, but when this game came out it was essentially an unheard of concept to have an open world survival rpg where you build your own base/fortress and I like to think that this game paved the way for future games. Now, this game might be buggy and not exactly the prettiest, but it sure is charming and hell of a fun time to play. A shame that it never got the recognision it deserved, and I personally hope that the developers behind this game make another game similar to this one, maybe not neccessarily a "Fort Zombie 2" but at least some sort of spiritual successor in the same theme of open world survival rpg where you manage a group of survivors, because so few zombie games whent with this theme and it's a shame because it's a combination that pushes all the right buttons for me, and this game, to me, was a tease to something I have been looking for and wanted for quite some time.

The AI is atrocious, the game is honestly pretty ugly, it's crash and bug-happy, you do missions at night or get too many zombies in the scene (Looking at you final battle) and the game lags like no tomorrow. Does that make it bad? Hell no - you just need to know that going into this and know that no problem you face is getting fixed. Fort Zombie is an all-round pretty decent game for it's price. It's one of the few games out there like it that I can think of that isn't Project Zomboid. Combining elements of RPG with squad-based gameplay, you build a fort and have two weeks to prepare for a horde of zombies coming from Indianapolis. You get missions to go out and look for survivors, weapons, or food/supplies. You can go into your fort and build and upgrade barricades and traps, place survivors, give them weapons, and get set up for when zombies come bashing your door down. Those are the elements that drew me to it, and still draw me into it. You can complete a full playthrough of the game in 4-5 hours, and I've played through it 4 times with this being my first one on Steam. The glaring problems the game has though I outlined above. The AI of your survivors on raiding parties is terrible to the point I'd say don't bring them along if you're on a survivor mission - there is a decent chance they'll get stuck in a house and force you to leave them behind because they mess the scenery up to the point you physically can't get them out. They get stuck and lost on every fence you put in front of them, they have trouble navigating their way around rooms, and the pathfinding is god-awful. The game is from 2009 and it was showing it's age then too. The game crashes often, so save just as often. On the upside to this, the game autosaves every time you complete a mission so you never lose *too* much progress. The game also lags like no tomorrow when you do anything at night or with too many zombies - lagged when I bought it on my laptop 10 years ago with 4 GB of RAM and CPU-integrated graphics, lags now on my desktop with a GTX 970 and 16 GB of RAM. But for $3.99? The game is well worth it. When it works, it's extremely fun for what it offers you and it doesn't offer anything it doesn't advertise. You have an OK RPG where you go to a base, clear it of zombies, find survivors, build a fort, and kill a horde of zombies. I fully recommend it at this price point, and if it goes on sale it only gets even more worth it.
