Train Simulator: Tehachapi Pass: Mojave - Bakersfield Route Add-On Features

Tehachapi! The name and the place stand among the pantheon of American railroading. And now, the legendary and rugged rail line shared by Union Pacific and BNSF comes to Train Simulator with Dovetail Games’ Tehachapi Pass route!

Spun over and through the daunting Tehachapi Mountains of California, the Tehachapi Pass route was constructed by the Southern Pacific, opened in 1876, and connects the arid Mojave Desert with California’s fertile San Joaquin Valley. Today, the route is Union Pacific’s bustling Mojave Subdivision and is a heavy tonnage artery for both Union Pacific and BNSF, the latter of which utilizes the line via trackage rights.

The Tehachapi Pass route for Train Simulator re-creates this historic line in contemporary form from Mojave to Bakersfield, California, a distance of 68 route miles. Anchored by busy yard facilities at both Mojave and Bakersfield, the route takes you to all of Tehachapi’s numerous renowned locations – Sand Cut, the Caliente horseshoe, Bealville, Walong siding, Cable, Summit, and, of course, legendary Tehachapi Loop, where the line uses a full loop and tunnel to cross over itself in truly dramatic fashion. The sight of a long freight looping over itself at Tehachapi Loop is indeed one of the great sights of railroading anywhere in the world!

With a steady flow of intermodal, unit train, and manifest freight traffic tackling twisting grades of 2.2 percent, Tehachapi has long been home to big motive power and the Train Simulator route features Union Pacific’s General Electric AC4400CW and ES44AC diesels along with Electro-Motive SD70ACe and GP40-2 diesels as well as BNSF GE ES44DC power. And the route includes a variety of contemporary intermodal and freight rolling stock.

The Train Simulator Tehachapi Pass route includes six realistic career scenarios, three railfan scenarios, and is quick-drive compatible, so you’ll be ready to climb aboard and immediately test your skills as an engineer on one of America’s most challenging and legendary rail lines!

This is simply a thumbs up from me for the route itself (this is starting to sound like a broken record), its nice to have something in SoCal for TS that isn't almost a decade old (i.e. Cajon). It's a thumbs down for the rolling stock. Again if there was "maybe" or "meh" option for steam reviews, this would fall in that - the price is NOT worth reused stock over and over and over and over and over and over. and over. Yay -almost 70 miles, which is a decent length considering what most DTG in house add-ons are nowadays -the old Tehachapi rail station was semi faithfully crafted -the pass itself and the Mojave area look fairly decent -plenty of areas for industry and a couple large yards esp on both ends of the route -tunnels, alot of em -horseshoe curves and the infamous loop -different looking regions, Bakersfield and the valley, flat greenish and farm land (which looks suspect at times). the Tehachapi range, curvy and fairly steep with arid mountains. Mojave out after the pass which is basically desert, but a decent looking Train Sim desert -AC4400 is a start for freshening up in house locos. done by the developer at Reppo which has made some of the better addons for NA content which can be bought on the steam store. no, its not a searchlight simulations loco, but its better than the typical in house stuff -the Bakersfield Amtrak station is a nice touch but useless as this is not a passenger based route nor does Amtrak run the pass unless detoured. -the Autumn seasonal setting will give you a little bit more of an arid look for what its worth Nay -the rest of the rolling stock, all reused from what I can tell ftmp. this is the norm unfortunately -Bakersfield itself looks ok, but heading east over towards the pass looks flat out bad. miss matched coloring for ground textures etc. just weird, plain and very "unfinished" looking -for non NA people, still no FNBS logos - but thats all legal issues (fwiw I didnt have the logos either because the addon was released botched again, which has apparently been fixed now...) but that seed has been sewn. -some old track laying off in the right of way which would normally be just rails is complete with ballast and all, looks odd - around the Bakersfield area (really in this specific location but looks weird as a TS track/ballast asset plopped down) -winter season looks screwy, esp in the Mojave area where just the tracks themselves will be covered in snow where nothing else will be -never ending double yellow aspects??? Basically 2/3 of the route is ok, looks interesting and could be challenging with the right 3rd party locos and rolling stock, which is why I give it a thumbs up the review is subject to change as time goes on the more I use it 6/10? ----------- a look at the route https://youtu.be/T7wj1Qfse44

I am so saddened to be writing this very negative review but here it is: I usually only run Quick Drive, unfortunately I get "out of memory errors" on everything but the Default. The default is so skimpy, you so none of the meaningful part of the Route. I have a Gen 10 core i9- 900KH CPU with 64 GB and an AMD 5700 XT graphic card. This is no memory issue as Matt Peddleson of Dovetail has often said, when ever he gets them on Live TV. Who knows when/if they will ever fix this. The only thing the Hotshots could say when I opened a support ticket was to break my whole install of 100's of GBs. I was really hoping Dovetail had gotten better at this?????? I have done 3 Integrity check on everything and everything else is working, so my Install is staying the same as it is for now. Maybe this winter I will consider a huge reinstall. Best Regards, Crysta
