WARNING: If you're the type of person who wants some sort of goal, you will not enjoy this game. If you just love looking at trippy things, this is the game for you.

Remember when, as a kid, you'd be out with your parents at night and on the way home you'd lay down across the backseat of the car and fall asleep, occasionally waking up, half-dazed, to see the shine of street lights, business sign neon and the taillights of other vehicles flash and drift across the roof of the car? 0N0W recreates this aura. You wander ethereally, feeling safe yet uncertain, through landscapes of not-quite-cities and not-quite-forests, with no single destination in mind and few signposts of actual location. Occasionally a path and portal are present or you find yourself in a cozy domestic space, of sorts, overlooking dynamic, seemingly-sentient surroundings. There's never an objective discouraging you from enjoying the moment and looking around. But oftentimes you just press on until you're suddenly transported to the next dream. I've yet to get to the part where I arrive home and my parents carry me inside to tuck me in to my bed. Frankly that would be a feature that I hope the game does not deliver on. I'd rather stay perpetually en route and in this beautiful trance.

I really tried to get into this game and I did find bits and pieces here and there that I liked and even thought was kind of brilliant, but, in the end, this game wasn’t my thing, because of how busy the art style is and how there is not much else to fall back on. This doesn’t mean it’s a bad game, though; it just means I can’t recommend it from a personal point of view. There is a lot of content, but the game still felt empty and didn't inspire me to go explore (and I usually love that in a game). I unfortunately got a headache early on from all the bright colours, and felt exhausted and stressed out by how everything is constantly moving. Not being good at handling visual overload probably doesn't help either... So, with that bit sort of failing for me, I tried to fall back on other things like story or a sense of purpose, but there's none of that to be had, except a few sprouts here and there, which could have bloomed into something interesting, but never did. It's like an art exhibition, so, just like in an art gallery, your enjoyment very much depends on you liking the art style. I did find a few worlds that didn't make me feel ill and even liked (among the many you get to visit), but those were the exceptions. I found it to be more interesting to write about than actually play. If you look at any screenshots and like what you see, you will probably love it. If you are into free platforming, you might also love it, because there is a lot of that. If you are into trippy things, this is probably very much your thing too. Whether you like it or not, prepare to be bombarded. Full review: https://maskinkultur.com/2018/05/12/review-0n-0w/

SUMMARY: A trippy wander through a large amount of surreal environments. Some are amazing, some frustrating, but the goal is to simply travel about, observe, and hop environments. A good choice if you want a brain-cleaner or relaxer, or like surreal walking simulators. It's hard to sum up ONOW. The best way I can put it is "you wander around various weird places to strange music, and occasionally leave or find doors." It's basically a walking simulator with a large amount of places to walk. However that doesn't quite do it justice. Some of the environments are stunning and bizarre, the transitions are trippy, and the music at times adds to the entire afair. It's like you're walking through a series of album covers. Sadly, not all of these are INTERESTING, and a few are frustrating. Some feel crafted, some feel like they were randomized, saved, and it was called a day. You'll want to leap worlds if you get bored - which you can. Though it's a great experience, some worlds feel frustrating and uninteresting. That critique aside, this is a heck of an experience - very meditative. It also shows a real sense of surreality and imagination. Who's it For? * If you like walking simulators, give it a shot. * If you like trippy experimental stuff, give it a shot.

Best enjoyed with a Radiohead song playing in the background. Putting on "How to Disappear Completely" when I was at an urban area really made me feel like a ghost just floating around where everything was and will never be aware of my existence. A bloody good song too you better go listen to it if you saw this "review". Songs like Codex, All I Need, House of Cards and Give Up the Ghost would also fit as the game's soundtracks if you're at a less crowded, calmer landscapes, preferably with darker colour schemes. Would highly recommend if you like the feeling of scouring through old Counter Strike maps or if you just wanna die. This game may scratch those itches.

I can't tell whether I love or hate this "game," and my feelings tend to fluctuate back and forth. It's all style - zero substance. Maybe that's the point.
Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2. VR REVIEW ONLY.
You can view my gameplay and initial impressions review here: https://youtu.be/Z-W5_QydkTA I do recommend this experience in VR. It is one of a kind. It's an artistic / experimental experience that reminded me of Jackson Pollock. I believe there are 6 different themed worlds to explore. The worlds tend to be on the trippy side. You have full locomotion and snap turning. You can also walk faster and jump (in all but one world). I don't believe there is a goal, but you may find a location which will snap you into another dimension. You can use keyboard controls to manually control the experiences easier (1-6 and 0). The combination of visuals (color, shapes, brightness), along with sound and the ability to go over certain objects is a mesmerizing experience. Despite the fast moving colors and visual effects, I did not find the experience to be intense at all, instead it was very chill and relaxing. I bought this app for $7 USD (it used to be normally priced at $10) and the reduced price is normally what I would call a steal. Unfortunately, I did experience a bug after quitting the experience. It crashed my Oculus software. I had to uninstall Oculus on my PC and then re-install to get Oculus link to work again. This happened twice and only with this app. I don't know if this app caused those problems with my Oculus software, but the quitting of the app was definitely bugged. Rate ?/10. I would give this experience an 8/10 without the above issue.
If you enjoyed my review, please consider joining my Steam Curator Group.
