This system combines between plants and aquatic animals. The explanation is very simple, in aquaculture techniques in which fish become the main ingredient is constrained in the increase of ammonia levels produced by fish feces. Whereas plants need nutrients that almost all of them are fulfilled by fish droppings. Then there will be a symbiotic relationship between each other that can benefit both.

In aquaponics, nutrient-rich effluents from fish basins are used as fertilizer for hydroponic plant production. Thus, hydroponics serves as a biofilter to absorb ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphorus, so that clean water can then be channeled back to the fish basin. Nitrifying bacteria living in filter media and associated with plant roots play a major role in the nutrient cycle; Without these microorganisms the whole system will cease to function.
