I adore this game. Here's a guide I made for acquiring all the collectibles. Below is my review. (っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ Umfend Guide: All Hearts ♥ In Umfend, you play an unnamed protagonist who is building a machine that attempts to rip open a hole in time and space. Before he can activate it, a mysterious entity begins to contact you with cryptic messages that hint to a shared past. Even though this particular entity may not want to hurt you, there are others who will penetrate your dimension of reality for more insidious purposes.Throughout Umfend you must solve puzzles, explore your surroundings, and decipher messages from outer dimensional beings. In the end, Umfend poses an important question for the player: "Is this real? Am I real?" Maker Cat's surreal writing gallops elegantly through each chapter. The story begins the Morning of 1996, then leaps nine years in the future, to then regress back to high school. Umfend's narrative forms a bow with its non-linear structure, only to be untied by an ending that connects all dots. But even with a coherent narrative that checks out, Maker Car still manages to leave the existential questions surrounding time, memory, and reality unanswered. Umfend features minimal dialogue. Memories slip away unnoticed for those of us who are a little scattered, a little aloof, a little absent minded. Thus, a simple typed, and paused … I remember ... can be very evocative. In addition, Maker Cat employs a certain ‘glitch’ style for certain areas of the game. I enjoyed it. It was a really efficient and evocative way to communicate themes and emotions of altered reality, disruption of time and space, and so forth. When it comes to aesthetics, umeera is a visual artiste. The textures for Umfend are tactile. umeera manages to create an environment that mediates seamlessly between reality and fantasy. The models are unique and full of personality. The outer dimensional entities are horrifying, but they never get old. These are complimented by environmental cues that sugges reality may not be all that it seems. At times, the walls in your home will grow eyes, and at other times, a swarm of cockroaches will penetrate your air vents. umeera's art style reminds me of the models and texture designed for The Path ... I wonder if there is any relation. umeera's character model for Anita is a beautiful enigma. A captivating soul full of knowledge and intrigue. She is a scientist. An artist, a friend, and a lover. She will tear the fabrics of space and time to try and communicate to you what is important, as best as she can. Walking into Anita’s room was so lovely. A white canvas splashed with buckets of pink and purple paint. A desk where she studies chemistry and biology. A bookshelf with a tape player, a record player, more books – and plants all over! I also enjoyed looking over the alternate character models for Anita once I finished the game. They all carry their own personality and history with them. Umfrend is also filled with nice easter eggs that show attention to detail. For example, there is a book in the kitchen of the main house that features Fairwalk for its cover art. Fairwalk is a past of AIHASTO, the developer for Umfend. In addition, there are chocolate bars named after the titled of this game that appear throughout. Put on headphones and play this game. Let the music and the visuals take you away and sit tight for a short atmospheric horror experience that effectively communicates fear and melancholy.

Short game with soul. Something, that most games have lost today.

Just garbage, devs claim it can take you 2 hours to beat this game, but really if I hadn't run into 2 bugs that caused me to reset, I would had easily beaten it in under 1 hour. The game is very pretentious, and plot can be summarised as "Couple somehow creates machine that breaks time and space, so now here is an hour of random stuff happening in mostly the same 3 levels". People seem to be giving it positive reviews cause "omg it has a love story", which is the saddest part for me since its a pretty lame love story.

★★★★☆ One game I would highly recommend is this romantic-horror gem. Had some flaws and I was definitely left with more questions than when I started, but the experience itself was excellent, and frankly it's the kind of game I'd make if I could do 3D, so I felt quite attached even from the demo. Pixellated graphics that are crisp & smooth, and had zero performance issues. Controls just fine, although the protagonist moves a bit slow at times. Options to remove the pixellated look if that's not your thing. Creepy soundtrack, and great use of sound in the environment. An interesting, but confusing, story. There's one puzzle that frustrated me quite a lot, which I feel could use adjusting to make it clearer what you need to do, and the game in general lacks direction, leaving you bumbling around clicking on everything you see in hopes it'll lead to the solution. I sincerely hope the developers update the game to make the story & ending easier to understand. Overall, though, pretty good. Definitely check out Umfend if you want to spend a couple of hours in a decent horror experience. :)

I came across this game randomly, while looking for another game that I couldn't find, or remember; maybe it never existed. But I'm glad I found this game, and a review by Malkavian, which convinced me to take the plunge. As usual with my reviews, if you're just here for the factors I'd use to figure out if the game is for you, look for ~tildes.~ 'Cause I'm gonna talk awhile. Games, and gaming, interest me less and less as I get older. For all the wonderful creativity of titles now, both big-name and indie, time and memory make a mockery out of my desire to actually play games. They tend to blur together, and while I've got games I rely on to shake me out of a slump, they're few in number - driven by powerful emotional or nostalgic pressure, or the simple joy of a well-done mechanic. Umfend is a fairly short game. It's also one of the few games out there that instantly, from the moment it started, had my attention. I could feel my heart racing, and the muggy summer air. This was it. I remembered what it was like to be alive. Describing pretty much anything in the game would be a spoiler, but at the same time - spoilers are largely meaningless. Nevertheless, I'll append a comment for the devs after I'm done. As to the game itself, it's not really a puzzle-game, or even a horror game (though there are elements some people will find horrifying); I'd struggle to call it a walking simulator, because the atmosphere is purposefully and painstakingly narrow in scope. Anyway, all those terms get thrown around too much. Carelessly; thoughtlessly. Comparing it to other games would be trite; nobody likes their work being compared to something else, or someone else, but - in the interest of helping people try to puzzle out whether this game is for them... One of my favourite games is Quake; the first game only, and none of the sequels. That sense of alienness, of melancholy, of the fact that even though it's ostensibly a shooter (and a good one), something feels off-genre, just out of sight, hidden in the skybox. One of my favourite games is Lighthouse - the Dark Being. Another story about parallels, otherworldly and beautiful and utterly lonely. Also, often pixelated on modern boxes - and without the option to disable that, aha! One of my favourite games is a strange little Yume-Nikki-like called Soup. Not too many people played it; most who did, didn't like it. But the same visceral feeling... I feel a lot of people will try Umfend, and refund it because it isn't - strictly speaking - a horror game. They'll be drawn in by those elements and focus solely on them, and miss the care that is in every layer of this game. And I'll be glad if they do, because this gem deserves the attention... But I hope some people look at it, and have similar experiences simultaneously unique and known only to them. ~Cons~ - Slow walking speed can throw players who need to go fast all the time; it's a vital part of the game's flow, but certain people'll wake up in 1996 and not even give the game a chance. - For some people, the hour-to-three-hour runtime'll be a negative. Quantity is a quality all its own, or whatnot. - Despite the scares, this is not truly a horror game. People looking just for scares and chills might feel 'cheated' by the game, even though there are plenty of those!.. But they're kind of tertiary, and, well.. - You have to pay attention. I know a lot of games deserve this, but you have to pay attention. ~Pros~ - The short length. I'm actually tired of listing this one as a con; we expect games to be long because they were lengthy growing up. We're better gamers now, and games can be more concise. I found the length utterly perfect. - I... Everything. - Sorry, the atmosphere, the ambience, the sound design... I don't just want an OST, I'd love to be able to listen to some of the background sound clips. All of it blends together to create an experience that, if it appeals to you, will have your blood singing and your heart pounding the entire way through. - You have your choice of two graphical styles; a grainy, pixel-FMV look akin to PS1 grafix, and the modern, smooth models. I can't say which I like better; edging me a bit into the latter camp is that some of the text is a bit grainy in the pixel category, and everything is important. (But both look amazing.) - Honestly, if I kept typing, the review won't end. ~Will I like this game?~ Chances are that if you find yourself getting impatient in-between scenes, light puzzles aren't your thing, or you demand length to your exploration, you might not be the audience for Umfend. Be especially wary if you catch yourself forgetting minor things, getting frustrated, and then going 'oh' when you realise that they were, indeed, present earlier in a game/story. There's nothing wrong with that! But it may make Umfend harder to enjoy. However. I feel that if you enjoy speculative fiction, horror, stories about loss, and other worlds... If you sometimes look at the sky and aren't sure why you are, or if you occasionally remember exact moments in your life with an indescribable certainty, then you should play Umfend. I can't promise that the game will affect you the same way it affected me; but I think you will be affected in a way entirely unique to you, and that, dear reader, is why if your curiousity was stirred at all - I'd like you to give Umfend a chance. As to me? AIHASTO has put themselves on the list of people I'll day-one support. Thanks for creating this game.

Amazing just amazing game. Great music and design and atmosphere, jump scares. Only thing i am SUPER confused is ending Is there more endings ? Because the one got , well... sucked, it was sudden and it just ended. And i was soooo in to the story :/ I like the game very much, but ending is horrible, at least the one i get. Other things where great.

Umfend is terrifying. Good terrifying not shit terrifying. I play a lot of independent horror and would really like to see the horror genre go THIS way. Beginner developers - play this and take notes! Beautiful story; more or less a puzzle solving walking simulator, with few locations but some very effective jump scares. If you love the hellish loop mentality with a good narrative - give this a try.

This game does so many things right. Atmospheric horror, sound design, compelling story, and lots of "wtf" moments. Pros: Great spoops Compelling story Constantly anxious (that one might just be me personally) Game lets you infer the story Character design is superb! Cons: Rather short (experience is still great) Game gives me too much credit on piecing the story for myself (I'm dumb, water it down a smidge for me) Creating a horror game is truly difficult, but this game nails the uneasiness, the audio spoops, the jumpscares, and the story (while maybe difficult for at least me to follow) feeds my curiosity. It's pretty short and at least on the surface doesn't appear to have any reason to play it again, it was pretty neat! Worth a pick up for sure if you love indie horror!

Short version: Umfend is an emotionally-satisfying, atmospheric and at times mildly frightening game that in its 2-ish hours of gameplay manages to convey a great deal without over-explaining. Though the graphics are technologically-outdated, the visual style is very good. If you prefer lengthier games, or prefer direct revelation to indirect storytelling, then you may wish to look elsewhere, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. To expound a bit, Umfend reminds me of two seemingly very disparate games - Killer 7 and To the Moon. Both concern the power of time/memory and uncovering something once forgotten. As the game description states, though a horror game, Umfend is ultimately about love and time, which makes its story resonate along similar wavelengths as To the Moon, while the manner in which characters speak, and the surreal manner in which they are presented in something of an abstraction from straight reality, recalled Killer 7 to my mind more than a few times. Umfend's style of storytelling (commendably, in my opinion) opts to communicate as much through suggestion and inference as downright exposition. I played through the game a second time after completing once, just so that I could view earlier parts of the game with knowledge I didn't have the first time through, and also replayed several chapters to confirm or review my conclusions. Fortunately, the game is brief and the developers included a Chapter select option, making it easy to revisit a portion of the game you may still have questions about. The designers definitely pay heed to the idea that atmospheric and especially horrific or unusual environments should not be explained in minute detail. You will definitely still have a few questions about what a specific thing was, or how it exactly relates to something else, but if you pay attention, especially to the sequence of events and appearance of objects and characters, you should have no trouble piecing the story together and, if you're like me, you'll find it all the more satisfying because your imagination has been allowed to wonder and conjecture instead of being rigidly boxed-in by The Plot. Most of the actual gameplay involved discovery, chasing weird phenomenon and some light fetch object x/take to place y type "puzzles". Technically, I suppose that means it is somewhat weak, but if, like me, on being confronted by a mystery you're so taken with trying to figure it out that other things become of secondary importance, you likely won't notice or care that most of the time you're just moving from place to place and moving some things around. There isn't much music, but what is there comprises mostly single notes or short, atmospheric pieces that seem designed more to evoke the mood than function as entertainment in and of themselves. Everything is about the feel of the game, and for a story of love, time and fear I think that's exactly where the focus should lie. Umfend is about creating an emotional response in its player and it succeeds admirably in doing so.
