What People are Saying

About the Game

The goal is simple: Reclaim earth.

In Second Extinction you take on hordes of mutated dinosaurs with up to two friends. Solo players beware: Second Extinction is designed with squads in mind. Only the strong will survive.

The goal of Early Access is also simple: Work with our community to make the

best game possible.

We want to hear your feedback loud and clear, and we intend for our community

to be a vital part of the development process.

Even so, there’s plenty to get your teeth (and claws) into from day one: 6 heroes,

11 weapons (with 5 upgrade tiers each) and 6 missions - plus some special side quests - across multiple regions of our big map.

Our mantra is that players win battles, communities win wars. Nowhere is this

more true than our War Effort feature.

Each region of our big map has a unique threat level. This threat level can be

lowered if enough of our players are successful in their missions and activities. But the dinosaurs aren’t resting either, and they’ll focus their efforts where you aren’t.

Each week the community will see the fruits of their labours or feel the

consequence of their incompetence. Let the threat level get out of control and

you can expect an especially tough Emergence Event to be waiting for you.

By playing Second Extinction you’re not just picking up another co-op shooter.

You’re joining us on a journey as we shape the experience. Every piece of feedback and every mission you play matters. So what are you waiting for? The fight to reclaim earth starts here.

Full release was promised over a year ago, now the game looks abandoned. Another Early-Access Cash grab.

The first thing you should know is that this game is 3-player. Next I’ll list the good and the bad. The Good: -The art and presentation are nice. The art style reminds me of “cool dinosaur toys” brought to life. The drop into and extraction out of missions are cool and immersive. -The combat loop is fun. The raptors gib nicely and the guns are punchy. There’s also a fun ragdoll system that allows you to send enemies flying and have them die from the fall damage. -The big dinosaurs have many different attacks and their armor and weak spots emphasize teamwork to take em down. -Every operator plays differently. Each one feels like a representation of a play style -The one map is good. It’s got unique locations and the enemy density regularly shifts in relation to global player actions. -The campaign missions are good. They are more than a laundry list and come with exclusive areas and scripted sequences. -No Microtransactions. Now for the Bad: -There’s only one map. It’s smaller than it looks, and may get boring. -After the campaign, the only real thing to do is freeroam and complete POIs and contracts, or do horde mode, but that doesn’t give any rewards yet. -All big dinosaurs cause staggering with just about every attack, and can follow up to damage the hell out of you, especially in solo. Staggering attacks should be an opening for the raptors, but instead an ankylosaurus can combo you to death if it wants. Most prominent in solo. -The gun upgrades are unbalanced to say the least. Some require going all-in on damage or stability to unlock a mildly useful perk, while some have very useful perks that require less commitment. At the moment I don’t see a reason to run anything but machine gun and revolver, their upgrades are the best. -Enemy variety is low. You’ve got 5 raptor variants, two Styracho variants, two Ankylo variants, and a Rex. If the devs are taking suggestions, I say they should have a Therizinosaurus. -No text chat. -The netcode makes everything delayed or sluggish. What’s nice is most of my issues can be fixed with early access updates. I’m leaving a thumbs up in hopes that Second Extinction will have its potential realized some day. Thanks for reading.

If you want a TLDR: The devs abandoned this game, leaving it in a broken mess and moved on to yet another game that will never be finished. Here's the entire story so far... Sadly i can no longer recommend this game. What once had so much potential has now been abandoned by its greedy devs and left in a nearly unplayable state. The e.a. support was amazing and the "Transparency" between the company and community was also really good! However, after announcing the games full 1.0 release everything slowed to a crawl and eventually fell apart. With no reason as to why and out of what seemed like no where, the devs never released 1.0 and gave a half baked essay several DAYS after missing the updates launch. After this, they went completely dark. No news, updates, Q&A's, nothing! However, after months of staying quiet the company was excited to show us yet another new game that they will be releasing... As of this review, the devs have only told us that 1.0 "will release sometime in 2023" but they wont shut the hell up about this new rogue like. Its crazy how they did this with Generation Zero (another game that technically got its 1.0, but was abandoned shortly after never adding more content that was promised) and now they're doing this with second extinction. It just goes to show that these devs are just another EA clone and don't care about the community, they're here simply to make proof of concept games to make us smile for a bit and then move on when they feel like they want to scam a new community. Second extinction had so much potential, the characters, the guns, the map, and the combat all felt amazing, but sadly the game just isn't what it should be and it will never be what it could be.

It's a cool game with a promising idea behind it. Playing solo works great and I've had no issues with a couple hours of playtime either on missions or just exploration. Though personally the characters seem a bit lopsided. Rosy is basically a necessity going solo because of her amazing healing active ability and ammo capacity with the minigun. Everyone else feels extremely handicapped if alone. But I understand they're still finding a comfortable ground for this so I haven't judged them too much as far as difficulty balance goes. The ugly problems show up when you try to play with friends. The servers/connections are extremely unreliable in multiplayer. If you want to support them by buying the game now, expect crashes or disconnects and for you to lose 20-40 minutes of progress per mission length if playing with friends. They also haven't found a way to retain progress or contracts (basically bonus challenges) reliably. You can sometimes rejoin a session, but launch points and rejoins can be bugged, and contracts will have to be completed again anyways. If you are not rejoined by the time the other members have extracted, you will get nothing at all, so try not to let that happen :). If you just want to shoot dinos on your own and want to support the team, then go for it. But if you were looking for a party game to play with friends or as a multiplayer session right now, steer clear and wait for some improvements down the road. Just to add - The reason why I'm marking as not recommended despite agreeing that the game works well in singleplayer is simply because the game is designed with a community and team effort in mind. You can play solo, but you get the most out of it when playing with other people, similar to deep rock, l4d, or any other team based objective shooter. If the multiplayer fails in this regard, then the game is not performing on its most important asset.

A lot of people here compare this game to left 4 dead or the likes. I found my way here because I was craving for a game that brought back the feelings I had when playing Evolve Stage 2 (even though this is PvE and Evolve was PvP). I think I should add that I find it a bit unfair to the devs to compare their game all the time to others, like it was some mod or slighty altered version of the compared game. This is not the case! This game can very well stand on it's own to shine! And boy oh boy it shines. The first thing you'll notice is the stunning atmosphere. The graphics are gorgeous, the sounds mixed with the music really give you this feeling of being stalked most of the time by a pack of hungry raptors. Weapons feel weighty and pack a punch, visually and damage wise. Recoil feels good and reload takes a good amount of time. Reload cancelling when sprinting is a thing, so conserve you bullets, go for headshots and only reload when you have a (relatively :D) save second or two. Explosions feel really good. And I mean REALLY good. Can't remember the last time I saw an explosion this good looking, sounding and feeling in a video game. Different classes that have to (or should) work together with unique abilities, a good amount of different dinos and minibosses (for early access release). And to top it off, a weapon and perk customization with crafting aspects that leave no desires (again, for a early access release). There is definitely room for improvements and also a lot of potential to make this game into something really great. There are some bugs which I can forgive for the time being and I suspect that they will be gone in no time since they are adressed by a lot of people. Eg. game freezes during the start a lot (restart steam for fix) or hovering characters in multiplayer (no walking animation for a short time). All in all, if you are a fan of PvE coop in a stunning setting with a lot of possible customization and never ending hordes of enemies, go and pick this up.

Great game with a really cool concept. Gameplay is pretty fun and the idea that you have to compete with the AI as a player base in order to conquer the map is an idea that I enjoy a lot as well. However, I cannot leave a positive review at this time, simply because if you want to play this game co-op with your friends, it's damn near impossible to complete a mission without getting kicked or the game crashing. I've seen the same concerns addressed by other players, and so far the only response I've seen is something along the lines of "you need to change who's hosting the game because it's your fault you have connection issues". Will change review to positive if this issue is addressed properly and fixed. :/

Atmosphere of Evolve, enemies of Left 4 Dead, characters of Apex, movement and combat of Doom, and the open world quests of Monster Hunter. With dinosaurs.

Was once a mod on the Discord for this game. No longer a mod. Probably a good thing since leaving a negative review for this game makes unable to be a mod for it. The game has had zero updates for over a year, the 1.0 release has been delayed multiple times for months, and is now delayed to an unknown date. This is all while the game breaks in several ways, and has multiple game breaking bugs. The group, Systemic Reaction, had trouble with a single game. I have no idea why they decided they should make more games with more teams instead of actually putting more people on the first game they made. The community manager is not great, and a good amount of the community will devdefend hard. I would say if the game actually worked as intended, then it would be worth it on a 90% sale, but it does not, so do not buy it. Unless the 1.0 release is near bug free with a large amount of content, this game will continue to decline.
