Uplink, the 12-year old "hacking simulator", is possibly the finest game of its type yet created. But it is definitely showing its age and I'm not averse to trying something new. On the face of it, Hacker Evolution Duality looks to be an excellent successor to that beloved classic. But first appearances are frequently misleading. Hacker is not a game; it is a collection of dull and fiddly mini-games. While it has an excellent presentation, the gameplay itself is nothing more than pushing a button at the right time; an uninteresting race against the clock that you need to repeat dozens of times in each mission. It looks great - it has the appearance of Hollywood hacking nailed - but it quickly degenerates into uninteresting repetitiveness. And just to make things even less fun, the controls were stiff and unresponsive; just the thing for a game that demands quick reflexes. Despite its stylish gloss, the game fails to engage on almost every other levels and ultimately is not particularly fun.

I played the first Hacker Evolution and I loved it. So when I heard that there was going to be a sequel, I jumped at the chance to purchase it! However, this game has little to recommend it, and doesn't much resemble the original at all. The original made you feel like an actual hacker, typing commands into a console. This game is a GUI based point-and-click. You don't get the feel of being a hacker that you might expect from the title. Not only that, but the gameplay is boring, and a lot of the tools at your disposal are arbitrarily difficult to use, and the time limit placed on you just makes things stressful and not fun when the tools take almost as long or longer than the time allotted to you. Do not buy.

This game is absolute garbage. It's not "open world" and it sure isn't full of amazing anything. I'm sure you're thinking "Oh man this looks just like Uplink!" and you would be right it does LOOK like Uplink which suckered me into buying this hunk of digital crap. This game is nothing like Uplink and is utterly disappointing to play.

I wanted to give my opinions on why Hacker Duality has so many negative reviews. I personally like the game and appreciate it for what it is. Clearly the developers wanted to try something new. Let's face it the Hacker Evolution formula is rather old and hasn't changed at all really since the very first classic Hacker game. I believe HED simply just didn't find a demographic to market to and that one of any significant size doesn't exist at all. Yes, whether a game is good or bad is subjective and as a result to rate a game good or bad relies on an average consensus. I believe HED is a rare instance where the conensus is wrong and I will explain why. HED was marketed toward hacking game enthusiasts and considering the fan following exosyphen had already most buyers of HED would have to be fans of previous HE games. They probably expected a game that was at least similar in gameplay to previous HE games. HED is not. It is a hacking game, yes, but it is so vastly different from previous entries that it caused dissapointment for the vast majority of buyers. It doesn't help that HED is much more complicated in scope compared to previous Hacker games. This also would of scared away anyone new to the genre. With that being said, I find the game to be highly rewarding once you understand it. Is the game hard? Sure, but that's ok because it is fast. In game theory there is this thing called balance which is important. Take Super Meat Boy and maybe Dark Souls for example. Most people would be put off from a game that has you dying over and over again but it's ok as long as there is something else that balances those failures. Super Meat Boy has short levels and fast level restarts. Dark Souls balances with rewards. HED balances with smooth, fast missions. IS HED fun? It is for me. I enjoy it. It is challenging but not impossible. I appreciate the new GUI interfaces while keeping still keeping consle commands(by the way, if you can't complete the Hacker Bootcamp, you overlooked the console). At first I was not so crazy about the mini games but then I realized if I had a choice between waiting minutes doing nothing for a password to crack or playing a minigame that brought much faster results, which would I rather? The mini games take away any boring downtime. You are never waiting for any significant length of time for anything to finish. You are constantly engaged and time is of the essence. Knowing you need to keep moving provides a rush. You need to make quick decisions. HED isn''t just a hacker game; it is a hacker game, a puzzle game and a strategy game all in one. I "know" it is fun. Either I am right or I am crazy. I believe the developers knew it was fun before they released it and simply marketed it to the wrong people.

I've bought this game years ago driven by curiosity, to find out what it takes to be one of the most hated kind of people in the virtual world. Well, i've gained zero knowledge thanks to the gods, and uselessness of this product. To explain myself politely, this is not a game, but a mental warfare without the cold trace of fun. The music itself doesn't match with my style, some electronic stuff, tastes are so different between peoples, so i can't rate it but acceptable enough. The game itself lacks of game elements, we have 7 "maps" total, (which are nothing more but a desktop-like picture with a few dots named as servers) there are some crazy time limited memory games and thats all. You have to count down numbers in a box from 63 to 0 while enemy servers attacking you (rofl), and there is another component of the game which is totally the same... I was in hope for a patch which adds some more features/maps or something to the game, but no, everything remained the same. Even the Vsync bug, which makes the HUD buttons disappear after each match, because the game have no graphics options and you have to mess with your own video card to play the game. There are random crashes and i've also lost my profile with my savegames and achievement progresses because for some reason, no idea how. And what is the most surprising, perhaps the price, you still have to pay 20€ for this headache after years! If i truly regret wasting money on a product, well this is it. The honest price shall be around 0,5€, so try to find something else about this genre, go away and don't look back, avoid to get robbed. I don't like to downvote games, because it is basically a waste of time, but this must be serve as warning to all, to forget this game. Like what i try to do.

Let's take a look at a simple mission in the open world. You can choose your target to attack, then choose whether to hack into it or damage it (that takes like two clicks). If you were lucky, you will take victim's money and buy some +stats. Now you may choose your next target to attack. After a few attacks, everyone attacks you and tear you down. In the single player, there's a little more to do, but there could be really more content!

Basically the same level of gameplay as a free flash game. If you want a fun Hollywood-style hacking sim, ignore this one and grab Uplink instead.

I’m a sucker for hacking games, yet another reason I swooped this one up when it was on sale…and have constantly regretted it. The worst part is there’s nothing inherently wrong that this game does other than just being derivative and generic. It tries to accomplish what Uplink did and with an admittedly better interface…but just comes off as uninteresting and kinda boring. I mean, I’m not even sure exactly how else to put it. You’re doing the same thing over and over again, which is what you’re doing in most hacking games, but this one doesn’t seem to be as lively or interesting as other hacking games, so…yeah. I guess it’s hard to explain exactly WHAT is wrong with it, but it just comes off as boring.

This is seriously one of the worst games I have ever played, not to mention bought. Not worth it by any stretch, don't spend money on this.
