So, I've now played an additional 6-ish hours and I'm almost to the end of the first season. However, that's as far as I'll go. I wanted to do good by this game as I am also a game dev, but this game is pale imitation of Stardew Valley with magic. Let me attempt to make a more comprehensive review then the original text below. First, I'm not going to join a Discord for a game I do not endorse, stop asking me to join! Second, this dev considers herself a solo dev even though there are over a dozen artists, musicians and a writer on the credits. It doesn't matter if they were commissioned or are full time team members, if more than one person works on a project, that project is not done solo. One is solo, two is a team. Music: -There is one song for Spring. On repeat. -There is one song for the mines/dungeon. On repeat. -There is one song for the Forest, a rather sharp one. On repeat. Sound Effects: -Inconsistent and in many cases non-existent. -They do help to let you know that you are actually hitting something, which is a plus of sorts, I guess. Story/Writing: -This game is often considered "dark", the whole sacrificing a lamb in front of children at the start of the game is "dark". This game is HEAVY! If you trigger, or have a lot on your plate, this game isn't for you. -Every character in this game has serious issues of the type that should be handled with sensitivity in this type of media, but they are not. Had this dev had a publisher they probably would've have put this through a sensitivity test, which I doubt it would pass in it's current state. -There is death everywhere in this game. Heavy Graphics: -Very boxy, you can tell where the tiles are, that's just poor design. -Water doesn't move, nor does much else. -Definitely multiple art styles crammed together, the difference is most apparent when transitioning from outside to inside. -The beach is just plain ugly. Progression: -You need to level up in each area to unlock new things, but the game doesn't explain that. -Absolutely everything you do results in exp which means you level up quickly. I had level 5 and 6s at the end of the first season. -Your often wandering about wondering what to do as the main story is blocked behind the travel cart which occurs only on Fridays and you need 5 Rations (a craftable requiring one cooked item) to go. It sounds cheap until you realise that you need to upgrade the house and who knows what else to cook. -You are often out of energy and out of things to do by 2-3pm. Mechanics: -Farming: bog standard. -Ranching:haven't managed to get that far. Is that a Llama or a tall goat, or a horse in the menu? -Foraging: trees seem to drop a random number of wood. Not many forage items outside the beach, they don't seem to drop very often. -Mining: bog standard. If you can find the hit box for the stones. -Magic: First two spells does exactly that same thing. Third spell I got from Sophia useful for getting unstuck from all the things you get stuck in. Cauldron doesn't seem to work, not sure if I'm missing something, but the game won't tell you anyway. -Combat: dull and uninspired... when you figure out how to get a weapon that is. -Fishing: causes lag. Serious lag! ugly UI for the fishing game, there doesn't seem to be many fish, and they don't sell for much. I accidentally gave away my fishing rod and it's the only tool you can't get back for free. - Crafting: carbon copy of Stardew Valley. Performance: - I don't have a gaming specific laptop but I do have a solid laptop that can handle OP modded Minecraft builds just fine. That being said, this game made my laptop run HOT! - As someone who devs for fun, I do believe this is caused by a major memory leak (also explains why I get random items in my inventory and why the game up and deletes random items). - I also expect that the dev hasn't done her due diligence when it comes to garbage clean up in the code. - I feel that there are a lot of problems under the hood of this game. (Original Review) I can't recommend this game in its current state. First, this is a full release, if this was a early access then I would be much easier on this game. As it is, this is a full release that had already gone through a testing process with kickstarter backers. Good Points: - cute - I love me some magic (why I purchased it in the first place) - different crops that I haven't seen in any farm game I've played before (Dates, pistachios, etc) - Use of a Shovel instead of a Hoe (you ever try to do things in the garden with a hoe? They are kind of useless) Bad Points: - frame rate drops to half without reason - I get stuck all the time in menu screens - There are times I can't interact with my chest, I don't know why - You are supposed to be able to run holding SHIFT, doesn't work - I keep getting stuck in weeds, stumps, trees, npcs, in areas with no props of any kind that I can see... - Game froze on save screen for 5 minutes... had to turn the game off completely - Get stuck in shop menus all of the time, need to use ESC to get out - Monsters do not have any attack animations - I died multiple times because I did not know that the thing flying around me was attacking me! I thought I was passing out due to low energy... - I still can't figure out how to smelt ore - You don't start with a weapon but monsters spawn right away on your farm - Many of the controls on the control tips don't work - You need to use the mouse to use a tool - Tool use is not intuitive - you need to be mostly on top of it and have your character pointing in the correct direction for it to work. - sell bin doesn't work - I've tried placing a bunch of items in, still only have 5G the next day. - I sometimes find random items in my tool bar... don't know where they came from - I loose items, like an expensive (150G) Date Sapling... don't know where it went - Items spawn and then despawn within seconds - Changing out items from the chest to the inventory is difficult and very finnicky - Character animations are not always correct, bug out - Collision boxes for certain props (like the trees) are difficult to find. I'm swinging away and can't find them (you need to swing until you hear the thump) - I honestly can go on and on at this point and I'm only Day 9-10...

A lot of the writing just doesn't sit well with me. Many of the conversations are very passive-aggressive. Sometimes both of the options are passive-aggressively insulting the other person that I'm speaking to. This way of interacting with the townsfolk just isn't my thing. I suggest having another writer/editor to read through the text and conversations with the townsfolk. Unless that's the idea the developer is going for, I don't like playing a character that is constantly low-key insulting everyone they interact with. [strike]I do applaud the sole developer for doing so much by themselves.[/strike] It takes a lot of courage, time, and effort to get this far and I'm 100% behind them all the way. I also don't think the game should've released as it is. This feels like it was rushed at the end and released prematurely. Many people have stated the problems in the current build (1.0.5) and I 100% agree with them. While I don't recommend the game as it is now, I'll keep a close watch on it and make any changes to my review when it has more time to develop. EDIT: I just found out the developer isn't the only person working on the game.
*THIS IS A FULL RELEASE GAME*
PROS: - you can use magic - you can summon animals (I think) - Interesting story line and a lot of interesting stuff to do - art is somewhat similar to stardew valley, but lesser quality - spoiler but not really
ISEKAI (famous genre nowadays)
CONS: - Character movement: SUPER slow even when sprinting (PS. you can't really notice the difference)
THIS IS RESOLVED. SPRINT IS FASTER
- Character using tools: Movement is not smooth and it feels like you're not hitting anything. - Sometimes buggy when interacting. - Cons are mainly technical stuff SUMMARY: - Interesting story line, but bad mechanics due to bugs, clunky movements, etc. I would expect this to be an early access game at this point.
UPDATED REVIEW
I am happy with the sprint issue and story updates, but I personally can not still play the game at this point. I wish the animations would be a lot smoother when it comes to hitting an object, etc.

I was very much looking forward to this game but its a big no. Not even on sale. This is not an early access game but has many issues and is considered a full release. Maybe check back in six months to see if there are any major updates.

Maybe it just needs more work, but this game is a poor imitation of the genre it belongs to. Walk speed is ridiculously slow, hitboxes are poorly polished, UI is too big and too high up on the screen, controls are clunky. Not only that but the character sprites are very clearly rip offs from Stardew Valley, and much of the pixel art doesn't match in style, so I worry that it's been stolen too. Save your money. It's not even worth the $15 it costs.

Brookhaven looks to be a sibling to Stardew Valley but on graphically, control wise this game is a gigantic mess. The movement reminds me of old Flash games; not the good flash games, the really bad ones. Just pass this by until the developer fixes the terrible movement.

The idea behind the game is good, the execution really bad. Controls are clunky and counter intuitive, the UI too clunky and massive, the tutorial lackluster and overall it just perform badly with many visual glitches. You can't zoom in or out, the map is too hard to read when you can't zoom in or out. The dialogue is a bit awkward and odd. Moving things around in your bagpack, to your storage chests and swapping tools is just a nightmare. I bought the game after having read a bunch of reviews, hoping I could make it work despite the glaring issues people posted about. Sad to say that I cannot, it's simply too much of a mess for me.

This game deserves more positive reviews and I hope this helps drive some traffic toward the game because it really is a little GEM. To begin with, the story is that you are sucked into a fantasy world and have to find a way home. To do this you farm, kill monsters, mine, make friends with villagers, solve puzzles and venture out into the monster filled lands in search of the missing Goddess. For those familiar with Harvest Moon, Story of Seasons and the later Stardew Valley, you will find this game very similar and familiar. While not as fleshed out as some parts of Stardew Valley, it is clear that a lot of thought and hard work has gone into making this game and I urge you to look past your initial reaction of 'Stardew Valley ripoff' because it really is unfair considering the farming sim genre has been around since at least 1996. There are certain things we love to see in these types of games, like romancing villagers, expanding the farm, a variety of farm animals, some sort of mining and upgrading of various tools, as well as crafting and designing to make the farm our own. BG has all of these things in spades. I have sunk around 147 hours into this game and am now 'finished' having solved the mystery, married the man of my dreams, built up my farm and made friends with almost all the villagers (f u Emma). And I think 147 hours to get through a game is def money well spent. PROS: A variety of marriageable characters and was not difficult to make friends even for someone like me who hates gifting. An intersting little town of turnips and carrot people as well as a variety of maps to explore and quest in. Mining was not a chore. I hate mining and loved that I could buy copper--> gold - this means you can play the game u want to. Mining was less about finding the 'hidden stairs downward' and more of finding the right path through the maze. This meant i could run through and not deal with time wasting things that I hate. Mining had puzzles which was fun and made me enjoy the mines. Leveling up all skills wasn't a hassle! Even fishing! I could marry male female etc whatever I wanted and there was an option for the badboy trapped in ice which is always my go-to. The conversation choices let you be a d*ck if you wanted to. Looking at you Emma. You have a choice of summonable mounts and minions. NICE! I had a handy dandy walking luggage that I could summon to dump my crap in in addition to the early purchasable bag expansions. There were cutscenes There were events and holidays. There were transformation options There was magic AND swordplay. I was happy to see fast seeding and fast crop pickup etc plus sprinkler and tool options. There were new kinds of buildings that I hadn't seen before which were kewl. The developer is very active and quick to answer questions and help out if you get stuck, pointing you in the direction of guides or getting your feedback on bugs. A variety of gear options with special powers. A variety of potions, I never felt lack of money was holding me back. The aesthetic is very farmey but also a little creepy skeletoney which was fun. There is an in game tutorial menu to assist with things that are difficult to figure out. I wish i had used this more. CONS: The building placements were preset and it would have been nice to be able to set them more specifically. The monsters are easy peasy and fighting them amounted to spamming fireballs or thwacking them with my wand/weapon The version I bought gave me the best weapon (wand) seemed a little cheatey xD The pack- crab became annoying to look at . I liked that you could tell him to sit and stay and summon him, but I would have prefered he were a pack- cat - or have a choice to what he looks like. Some of my animals were permanently grumpy and I don't know why. They had food, heaters, auto-feeding, companionship, constant visits from me and yet they were grumpy. I did not like the irregular shape of farmland. As someone with farming game ocd, I like all the things to line up, and sprinklers, land, buildings etc not being perfect irked me a tiny bit. But I understand that the spooky feeling of Brookhaven was part of the overall aesthetic, farm included. I did not enjoy being a werewolf and being unable to find the one ingredient for the potion to turn me back. I was a werewolf bitten by a vampire. Might be cool to explore a hybrid of some variety? I wish the forest was bigger and the dryad village did something. It would be nice also if there were anonymous 'hints' to getting certain quests started that I had no idea about until i saw a guide. I married Nebarius and I had hoped that his little friend Charon would ease up on following him around a bit, but nope... watches us get into bed together. It'd be nice if he had his own area of the house he goes to to relax or play or give us some privacy. Some of the things weren't obvious. Like I tried to use the click calendar in my house multiple times without success not knowing spacebar was an interact button until I spoke to developer and she mentioned it. And so I missed out on many things until the third year of my game. I had to go searching for guides on a couple of things, like I couldn't figure out where to get certain items that were quest necessary or they required me to do something that I wished hadn't been a thing, even in a pixel game. How do I rotate furniture?? BUGS: This game does have a few. The ones I encountered were machines not doing what I needed them to, which also was part of the issue I think where mouse clicking on something was less effective than space-bar ing I also had an egg hatching bug which was fixed by the next day by developer. Another bug I encountered was being stuck in werewolf form unable to get to the next day. I usually slept the day I turned into a werewolf but there was a time where it began to 'sleep' for the night and then just continued past 2am, trying to go back to sleep again would result in the same hang and continued playtime. I eventually crashed the game and restarted which fixed it. As mentioned before however, the developer is very active and she looked into the issues I had and was very helpful with figuring things out, So in conclusion: TL;DR Two Thumbs up, Play this game! It really is a little Gem if you give it a chance.

I don't review games often, but Brookhaven is a lovely game, and a hidden gem if I ever saw one! The sorting can be a bit odd, but I honestly didn't find the controls to be all that frustrating. The game has a wonderfully dark fantasy vibe that I have been looking for and the characters feel real and full of life. I actually wanted to get to know more about them! If you are on the fence, I say go for it. I can feel the love the dev has put into this game, and I believe this title deserves far more attention and recognition!

I really wanted to like this game. On the one hand, it seem like it would be everything I would want in a farming sim. On the other hand, the controls are just not working for me. It's separate buttons to pick up and place items in your inventory and my character always uses their tools two spaces in front of them instead of the standard one. Once these issues are corrected, I would be happy to purchase the game again and give it a shot.
