TL;DR

BatMUD is pure text. Yes, ASCII-characters, words and even elaborate sentences. Like a book that you interact with. However, it's not a multiple choice book but more of an open-ended choice. Play as you like, alone or with hundreds of others simultaneously online.

About the Game

There's a MUD on Steam.

Forge artifacts of power. Sail to faraway lands. Build a city in your name.

Establish your legacy. Perish, and be born anew.

See guilds fall, races become extinct - or be one to nurture them.

Explore the realm and roam free.

Hone your craft, by forge or by arcane arts, and empower yourself - or others, for a price.

BatMUD is a text-based medieval fantasy game with an extremely rich set of features.

We offer a significant player to player commerce system; and experienced players can build their own items, including seafaring vessels and even cities. Play anything you wish; build your character, reincarnate. Find locked races and establish secret societies. Enjoy the massive open realm, roam free. Create, trade, quest, amass wealth and equipment. Make friends within the vibrant and colourful player community.

A detailed combat system, familiars, mounts and hundreds of custom zones built over 25 years. Constantly evolving, always under further development. BatMUD is the predecessor of MMOs and a hidden jewel of the Internet.
NEW TO MUDS PLAYER REVIEW

Introduction
First off I want to say that I've never played MUD games, or any other text based game in my life. I'm completely new to this genre. With that said, I've always been a fan of RPG games. When I saw BatMUD pop up in my recommended game section I took a look at it. At the time before I decided to purchase, I didn't know what to expect. I thought I was probably going to end up wasting my five dollars and I justified the purchase based on the notion that "eh it's five dollars". Well here I am over 40 hours later later and I'm having the time of my life! This game is truly a unique experience.
What to expect
The game is text based, the steam version uses the Batclient which offers a very nice modern/clean UI that comes pretty much by default ready for any new player. It took me a decent 2-3 hours to get used to how the terminal commands work, nothing that can't be learned. The game has you go through an extensive tutorial which I ended up taking several breaks from only to come back to it quickly. The tutorial itself is essentially a mini D&D like campaign that explains the majority of everything you need to know about the game. However in all fairness I feel like I've benefited most from the newbie chat channel as almost every player I've interacted with so far has been very kind and helpful. Once you complete the tutorial you're free to continue playing around the new player starting town, as well as do quests. Quests can be found all around the game world. Not only are there quests, you can explore on your own. Fight monsters and other creatures scattered around the lands.
Pros

Interesting story text and character dialogue
Engaging and very friendly community
Real quests! Not that go kill x, fetch x, non-sense.
Very compelling character/leveling progression and development
Massive world with over 25 years of content

Cons

Very hard to get into, need to spend a lot of time reading and learning game
No audio effects or music
A lot of the world minus the realm map, and maps inside towns/player cities are not mapped. In other words, you have to read the descriptions of rooms you're in and cant rely on visual map or other display to see where you're at or where you're going. (Not really a con per say, but putting it here because this might be a big turn-off for a lot of people) With that said I think this feature adds a lot of mystery and surprise while adventuring in un-mapped areas.

Final Thoughts
I'm really enjoying my experience and I'm going to continue to live in this world and see what happens along the way. It's still taking me some time to really learn the game and it wouldn't surprise me for those who're still on fence about trying this game out if it takes the same amount or longer time to learn as it's taking me. Especially if you're new to MUDS like myself. With that said, you can't go wrong with this purchase if you're 1 willing to learn with an open mind and 2 enjoy reading and RPG style games.

More of a warning than a review, since the storepage doesn't seem to mention that this game features in-game purchases that directly increase the power of your character, as well the rate at which they gain experience and gold. They're called donations but that's pretty misleading since it's clearly a transaction and the game even has a command 'tpcalc' to show how much you have to "donate" to get the amount of "task points" (I guess the task is entering your credit card details) you want, or inversely how many task points you get for a specified amount. Great game otherwise.

Finally BatMUD has arrived to steam! Cheers! Just word of warning for everyone that is considering trying out this game: It's HIGHLY ADDICTIVE game, that will eat your soul. I have played this game (started in 2001) for many years and there's still always something to do / new places and mysteries to explore. This is THE game that I always compare to other MMO:s and such and keep coming back after other games feel too shallow. I almost started to write here what you can do in this game but... most likely after writing page or two I would still just scratch the surface. I just have to say in a nutshell: It's the text-based RPG game where you are rewarded / punished for your actions and you can pretty much do anything you wish (monster slaying, exploring, crafting, quests, events, shipbuilding/sailing to mention a few). This game has quite high learning curve, but as you learn the game more bit by bit, things get easier. Community is superb though and very helpful, so new players should find their place in world quite fast.

I have played a lot of BatMUD. The game systems themselves are excellent. The content and the community make this an absolute "do not recommend from me", however. If you've never played a MUD before, the genre might need some definition. MUD means "multi-user dungeon." they are the precursor to the MMORPG in a lot of ways. You have a mostly text-based interface, where you type in commands. You explore rooms (by reading their text descriptions and trying actions like "search painting," "open door", etc) fight monsters, socialize with buddies, solve quests. Combat rounds happen in 3-second intervals, with commands entered beforehand. So you type "use kick at dwarf," and when the next round comes up, your command begins. Complicated commands may play out over multiple rounds. The core gameplay loop is to explore and fight and solve quests to gain experience points. You then spend those points to raise your character level, as well as spending them to gain skills and spells. If you die while carrying experience points, you lose some, so there's a balancing act between "what can I do without dying" vs "when should I go back to spend points." A rich MUD client can let you highlight text in noticable colors, shorten commands, or even make buttons that fire off a command for you. The client you use to connect to a MUD is almost as important to the experience a the MUD itself. What you are buying on Steam is the "batclient," a MUD client that automatically integrates to BatMUD You can connect to BatMUD through other MUD clients for free, so a part of this review needs to address the client itself. It's fairly good, giving you access to an integrated world map, status bars, a party GUI, and other non-strictly-text-based elements. It's also quite extendable. If you are going to get into BatMUD, the batclient is worth a purchase. So why don't I recommend this game? It's the community and some of the content. The game has existed for over 30 years, and as such there's been a lot of content. Some of it is immature, misogynistic, and just outright cringey. There are absolutely weird aspects (you cannot solve the Holy Grail quest as a female character, you have to get a sex change to do it), and areas/quests that basically require you to know the source material the author plagarized (one map is just an X-Files episode, and the solution is "just do what Moulder did in this 90's TV show). The content issues continue from the exploration into the guild system. Guilds in MUDs are like "classes," in other RPGs. As you level up, you invest levels in a guild, and that guild makes skills and spells available to you. The problem is that there are clear, unstated biases in the guilds. Compare to an MMO like World of Warcraft or Rift. A character starting as a mage in one of these games would be able to explore and quest solo, group up for dungeons, and easily transition between specs to do so. In BatMUD, this is not the case. For the Mage background, for instance, a Riftwalker is really only useful as a solo character. But a Psionicist cannot really solo at all. And a specialist mage, like a member of the fire college, requires so much experience points that it is simply not viable for a newer player to use. What this comes down to is learning a strange system of "if you want to play by yourself, do this. If you want to play with others, you should re-roll your character and do this." Some guilds, like Civilized Mages, are mechanically awful and literally have better alternatives (Runemages are also in the same guild line). Yes, there are trap choices. So while you're dealing with the cryptic nature of character building, trying to figure out if the author thought hell raping your character was funny, or wondering if the area is broken, you have to deal with the community. There will be, at time of writing, roughly 100 players online at a time. 5 of them will be pleasant to talk to. They will not play with you because they have literal billions of experience points and play with the same people 10 years running. The remaining 95 people will be bots, silent players, and racists. On my last day of playing a literal game moderator (wizard) used two racial slurs and homophobic statements within 5 minutes of eachother. You will in all likelyhood be repulsed by the tolerance the community has for white supremacy and the deflection to "free speech" to abuse hateful things, while shutting down any conversation they don't like. In short: the client is great; the game loop is consistent and rewarding; the content is janky; the community will drive you away from this game. If you like the concept, there are many other interesting MUDS out there. Save your time.

Mud has been around for a very long time, it has not aged well. Full of players that have been playing for a very long time, not many new players stay around. The mud has many different areas that were coded by many different people over the coarse of many years. People run the same areas over and over for months. The syntax in some of these areas are just plan garbage. Not a solo friendly mud. Not a new player friendly mud. You have to beg to find any type of party. It has a pay to win aspect to it with a boon/bane aka stats. You pay for better stats. Yes you will see 100 or more people online but again 90% of them are vets and will not party with you. Most people are just idle. You need a party to get any eq. Many races / guilds to join , some are fun most are a waste of time. PK can happen anytime. If you have items in a chest in a house high level players can come take them. If you are looking for a mud to play don't play this one. Have over 500 hours in the game even though Steam doesn't show it. Most people use a free client which you can get if you know where to look. If you are new to mudding Don't play this one......

If you're not already interested in text realms, they're going to be a hard sell. No matter the angle, we're looking at antiquated gameplay that requires you to both input and comprehend text. However, if these obstacles are overlooked, Multi User Domains in general can provide a depth to their game systems that is nearly impossible to match in modern era gaming. If you already know you're interested in text gaming, you'll want to know what sets this one apart. In my opinion one can generalize all MUDs into one of three categories: PvP, PvE, or Roleplay based. PvP MUDs tend to be about posse warfare and duels, much akin to other open world MMO pvp experiences. Achaea is where I'd point you to for this. Roleplay tends to be about creating and partaking in stories and being social. Dragonrealms is where I'd point you to for this. Then we come to the Player Vs. Everything branch, where BatMUD firmly resides. This game revolves around killing monsters to collect experience points, and then spending those points on upgrading aspects of your character. What sets this game apart is the sheer scope of power level growth available, and the replayability introduced by allowing you to take the vast majority of your progress and apply it to an entirely new character build. In Batmud It takes -years- for most people to achieve a level of power and game knowledge that they can begin to feel comfortable with. There are literally systems in place to spend xp on forever. New monsters, equipments, events and even character classes (of which there are almost 40) still trickle out for this game, well over 30 years after official release. There are impressively coded, one of a kind items that playing supporters of the game have spent tens of thousands of dollars on, mostly to make sure the lights stay on. You can really, REALLY dive off the deep end with this one, and try as you might, you probably won't find the bottom. The community is fragmented a bit. It's based in Finland, and there is an obvious Finnish cool kid's club, among others. Pissing them off can be detrimental to long term goals, or endearing yourself to them can put you on a very fast track. Knowledge still has a lot of power here, and most people are happy to keep you ignorant- so that you struggle as they struggled. You will be hard pressed to find relevant walkthroughs with detailed quest or mechanical information. It is a part of the game, and not a piece to be taken personally. It is a world to forge relationships in, and you should be prepared to grind very hard for a very long time if you want to accomplish worthwhile goals here.

This isn't very user friendly. This isn't even experienced MUDder friendly. The steam client did not detect / could not connect to my account and I had to connect via Mudlet client, which defeats the entire purpose of purchasing the steam client. I found the tutorial off-putting right from the start, which is unfortunate. This could be very will due to it being a new code base, as most of my experience is based off of various versions of ROM, but very shortly in I was looking into ways to delete my character - and I couldn't find a way to do event that so I quit. The game decided to make me link-dead instead of quitting, which is when I knew it wasn't a good fit for me. Can't seem to refund, which is I guess fine. I've been a long supporter of MUDs and 5 dollars is but a pittance to support such a genre - but as far as the Steam released client, I cannot recommend. Donate if you want, but go ahead and connect/create a character through a third party universal such as Mudlet to avoid undue frustrations.

If you are a Linux user, I advise you to avoid this until the developers make it more Linux-friendly. There are a number of issues:
The app dumps a "batclient" folder directly into your home folder, something bad enough on its own. Worse still, it doesn't even have the decency to make it a dotfile so it is at least not visible by default.
Clicking a URL in game shows a loading cursor for Firefox for a few seconds and then does nothing. Then, later on when you close the game client, all the URLs will open up in Firefox once the client process terminates.
Worst of all, the dimensions of subwindows/widgets are not loading correctly upon restarting the client (often partially out of visual bounds of the screen). Only upon going to the profile menu and reloading the profile will they display properly.
If you make a new profile and set it as default, the client will not load it properly when next you restart, instead loading the default (un-deletable) profile shipped with the client.
The option to dock sub-windows to the edge of the screen does nothing.
