I honestly can't explain my love for this game. It is hands down the smoothest, most charming, and most well put together gaming experience I've ever had. I might be a little bit addicted to this game (check my hours), but I have reason to be. It's charming to no end, and I couldn't tell you how many times I've played the game simply to experience it again. It has a phenomonal soundtrack, incredibly good graphics, and controls that are tighter than... um, something incredibly tight? The feats and challenge mode are enough to keep you interested, and the other two (and soon three) campaigns are not to be taken lightly, either. I couldn't recommend this game enough to casual, hardcore, and even non-gamers. If you were questioning getting this game because of its slightly (and rightfully) big pricetag, don't question it. Get it, and you'll be blown away. It's simply a blast.

    I cannot recommend Shovel Knight
enough
because it fails
at being bad
so hard. You might as well grab 15€ from your wallet and burn it
if you are a fool
. You will get no joy from this
if you don't have what it takes, you little
piece of garbage. I don't want to go anywhere near this game
if I don't have enough time to sit back and properly enjoy it
again. I assure you that you will feel the same. The 8-bit music will drive you insane
with nostalgia
, the controls are disgusting
ly good, especially if you have a decent controller
, the art looks like it was made by an 8-year-old
prodigy genius blessed by angels
. All in all, I rate this game 1
if we're using a simplistic binary rating system where 1 means 'recommend', and 0 means 'do not recommend'
. Buy Shovel Knight if you are a sucker
for games that are good
.

Shovel Knight is a 2D side scroller platforming game - it was developed and published by indie games developer Yacht Club Games in June 2014. The game was initially released on PC, 3DS and WiiU and then later ported to PS3, PS4, Xbox One and the Vita in early 2015 - it has also made it's way onto the Amazon Fire TV platform too. Gameplay You play the role of an anonymous character, as you collect treasure in this 2D world. Your characters main attack is, you guessed it, his shovel which has various uses throughout the game, the main one is being used to hit enemies around the head with. You can also use the shovel to dig up treasures hidden in dirt found around each level. The shovel also comes into the platforming side quite a bit too, you can use it to jump on top of other enemies to bounce up to higher points in order to reach harder to reach areas for extra treasure. I especially liked the way the game handles death, each time you die, you will drop three sacks of treasure, which deduct off you total - when retrying the level, the three sacks remain where you died allowing you to pick them up again, this of course leads to some interesting gameplay elements when you die in a pit of emptiness or other areas where it is impossible to get to without dying again. Throughout the game you also encounter various traders which will let you spend your hard earned treasure to upgrade your character with other secondary abilities, whilst these are not always needed in order to progress in the game, they certainly make it a lot easier - the upgrades can consist of health upgrades or extra items. Each level also has an end boss to it; plotting you against some classic NES boss fights, requiring a degree of platforming and classic hack and slash moments. The boss fights are well really done and each has their own unique battle style. Graphics The graphics in Shovel Knight are some of the best 8 bit style graphics I have seen. We are seeing this graphic style becoming ever popular on Steam, and it's nice to see a game put so much extra care into producing a well made looking product. Each of the levels are colorful and full of vibrant colours, the animation on all of the monsters and NPCs are really nicely put together as well. This game really will give you a nostalgia hit if you are an older gamer. Audio/Soundtrack The audio and soundtrack in Shovel Knight is just amazing - so much so that it was released for individual purchase on release of the game. The soundtrack was worked on the gentlemen who also worked on the Mega Man theme tune too. This is another aspect of the game that will really give you flash backs to your childhood if you played on the NES/SNES. Difficulty I found this game to be particularly difficult - again this is down to the platforming side of it because I am god awful at the genre, but the boss scenes are also sufficiently challenging as well. You have to work out the bosses attack patterns in order for you to take as little damage as possible because sometimes, some of their attacks are unavoidable so damage is inevitable. The platforming side has some hard moments in too, whether it be the levels where you have to navigate across floating platforms in complete darkness with only a few glimpses of light from lightning storms to see where you are going. The difficulty is nicely paced and doesn't ramp up too quickly, allowing you to get to grips with the gameplay before throwing you in against the really difficult stuff. Level Design Each of the levels in Shovel Knight are really well set out. Each level has its own theme and its own style of enemy to fight against. Throughout each level there are plenty of opportunities to show off your platforming skills for reaching difficult to reach ledges and navigating moving platforms over pits of darkness just to get that one health upgrade! Along with the the abundance of treasure to find in each level either by just killing enemies, you will also find mounds of dirt on the ground and up walls which lets you put your shovel to work, these normally result in thousands of treasure coming out so keep and eye out for them. Along each level, you will come across a number of checkpoints, these checkpoints can either be used as just that, or you can destroy them, rewarding you with even more treasure, but renders the checkpoint useless, so this should only be used when you don't mind having an awful lot of backtracking to do if you die. I made the mistake of doing this twice on two checkpoints without knowing the consequences and I thoroughly regretted it when I realized what I had done, especially when it was the last two checkpoints before the boss. Game Length and Replay-ability A full playthrough of Shovel Knight took me just around ten hours to complete - I thought it was a very good length game for it's price, and upon completion the game, you also unlock the "New Game+" mode which is something I really look for in any sort of game like this, so it was nice to see. I actually thought this would of been a nice game to incorporate local co-op in someway, but sadly there isn't any element of multiplayer. With the extra game mode, you could easily put about twenty hours into this game, something you don't very often see from Indie titles. Technical Issues With Shovel Knight being a 2D experience, the graphically options are very limited, however you can play the game at full resolutions all the way up to 4k, granted it doesn't make that much a difference on the appearance side of things, but it's nice to see it being supported. With full controller support, you should really be taking advantage of that, as with all platforming games - I tried playing with the keyboard and it was just a train wreck trying to get through the platforming... Conclusion To sum up, Shovel Knight is a game that will be welcome in 99% of people's library, even if you didn't experience the games on the NES/SNES, you will still get a huge amount of enjoyment out of this game. The graphics are gorgeous, and soundtrack just rounds off this game to be an almost masterpiece. I can't think of anything negative to say about the game. For the price of £10,99, this is an absolute must buy for any gamer out there. Tom's Score Card 1) Stay away 2) Only recommended when on sale 3) Recommended 4) Highly recommended 5) This is a must play If you found this review helpful, please consider giving it a thumbs up. Shovel Knight Treasure Trove is a great game and a must-have for platformer/metroidvania/side-scroller fans. With its 4 unique campaigns you're sure to find one that you will enjoy. Having completed all of them, I'd like to share my in-depth thoughts for each campaign and help you find out which of them might be best for you and if you should pick up this game. Shovel of Hope : In this campaign we play as a titular hero - Shovel Knight. This is probably the first campaign people start when they pick up the game and what can I say? I really enjoyed it. Shovel Knight's moveset is easy to grasp and feels polished. His simple moveset is complemented by relics, which give players a lot of unique abilities and make the character skillset feel complete. Combat and platforming experience feels good, but I think the combat is a bit better. Shovel Knight also has some of the coolest boss-fights I've got to play, really well-designed and challenging in a fair way. The ost's are catchy and I really like the retro-colored pixel art-style. Story - it is quite simple, but in a good way and I think it fits game's general lighthearted aesthetic The only critique I really have is that while difficulty is fair throughout, there is one thing that feels simply unfair. Upon death Shovel Knight drops bags of gold that he can retrieve, but sometimes they can get stuck somewhere simply unreachable, which can get really frustrating. I recommend spending your gold on items before accessing certain levels so that you won't lose your time. This applies to all the campaigns. Plague of Shadows : This one was a tough start for me, but after some time I think it's pretty good. Level-wise it is unfortunately the least unique campaign since you mostly play throughout the same levels as Shovel Knight that are slightly modified to fit the Plague Knight's playstyle. Speaking of his playstyle - Plague Knight starts difficult to grasp. His platforming can be hard and frustrating, but it simply takes some time to master it. Contrary to level-design, his combat skillset might be one of the most unique and advanced in the entire game. Plague Knight can create different type of bombs using variety of casings, powders and fuses that you can obtain. You can create a lot of cool bomb combinations and it is fun to try finding the best solutions for different situations. If you value freedom in your playstyle or you simply crave chaos, then I definitely recommend this campaign for you. Plague Knight's combat and healing capabilities make most boss fights a breeze. Unlike combat, you won't find as much ease in Plague Knight's platforming - it is really a mixed bag in my opinion, had some of the most frustrating moments in the game, but once you master it, it's manageable, but still I wouldn't call it fun. I really enjoyed this campaign's story and I think it's sweet. Basically you're seeing the same world from a new perspective and embark on your own quest as Plague Knight. There's also a really cool, unique hub area. Specter of Torment : It is the shortest campaign in the game, but also one of my favorites. Specter of Torment is a must-play for those looking for platforming-focused gameplay. It has some of the most fun and dynamic platforming in the entire game! Specter Knight's combat also feels really good, it's satisfying and effective. Similarly to Shovel Knight, Specter Knight's moveset is complemented by curios (his version of relics). His curios are a great addition and I like how the game gives you a little area to test them out after purchasing them. Unlike Plague of Shadows - Specter of Torment stages are noticably different from their original iterations and some are completely new, which feels really refreshing. Additionally stages have new enemies and some of the bosses have new attacks unique to this campaign! Stages also have remixed version of original music tracks. + Specter Knight's hub world is amazing! I absolutely enjoyed this campaign story - it's interesting and really tragic. Specter Knight is probably one of the most engrossing characters in the game. Overall I highly recommend this campaign, it is the most polished and fun. King of Cards : This one was also a tough start for me, but oh boy did it change. By the end of my playthrough it became one of my favorite campaigns! King Knight is the most unique and also the funniest campaign in the game. His gameplay consists of two parts normal stages and card game called Joustus. At first I was really skeptical about both of them, but it just took me some time to warm up to them. Let's start with his platforming. I'll be honest - at first it felt really rough and I hated it, but after finishing the game I think I can say that he has the second best platforming moveset and some of the best platforming sections in the entire game! His platforming moveset is really simple, but it works extremely well and is really fun (especially in mid- and end-game). His combat is also simple, but yet again works really well. Just like the previous campaigns, his skillset is complemented by heirlooms (King Knight's equivalent of relics) and I've got to admit - heirlooms are one of the best and funniest ability items. King of Cards also has few new, unique boss-fights, some of which being the most fast-paced and difficult in the entire game. The second half of King of Cards gameplay consists of the card game Joustus, in which you have to claim more gems than your opponent by pushing your cards onto the gems. Each card has arrows which indicate the direction they can push other cards and some have unique abilities. At first it felt really mediocre to me, but once I grasped the mechanics it just kept on getting better. Strategizing, finding the best possible play, predicting your opponent's moves was all really satisfying and fun to me. But I have to admit that some of these card were really difficult and undeniably frustrating at times. Still, I think winning some of them even after 10 tries was worth the struggle. Design-wise King of Cards has the most unique levels and some are completely new, previously unexplored parts/locations in the world of Shovel Knight. One thing some might find negative is that his levels were all relatively short, I personally also disliked that at first, but I quickly changed my mind - I think short length stages fit King Knight play-style better and considering that his campaign has an entirely fleshed-out card-game, it only seems fair that the stages are shorter. Okay now let me tell you about the best part of this game - King Knight himself! This guy is the most charming and entertaining fellow in this entire game, his story was such a spectatle to follow. Some of the cutscenes and character interactions made me laugh multiple times. To sum it up King of Cards story has a lot of personality and is sure to keep you engaged. Overall I recommend this campaign if you're looking for an unique challenge and difficult, but fun platforming stages. Showdown : This multiplayer mode is really chaotic and fun. It doesn't have an online co-op, but you can still play it together with friends via Steam Remote Play and the experience is still really good if you have good internet connection and if not, playing against CPU is still a lot of fun! There's also a story mode and other modes that you can play.

i bought this game for my son for his 10th birthday. unfortunately i lost him in a custody battle with my wife a few days before that day, so i ended up having to play this game while downing several gallons worth of fireball mixed with elmer's glue and grieving over the fact i'd never see my son again. i also came to the realization that i don't actually have an ex-wife or son and that i might have some early onset dementia. cool game though
