I really don't want to not recommend KAMIKO, but I feel like I have to. Now don't get me wrong. The game is not terrible; it just doesn't have much to offer gameplay-wise and support its audiovisual presentation, ultimately resulting in an unfortunate mediocre experience. As evident from the videos and screenshots on the store page, KAMIKO looks and sounds very good. The characters are well-animated, the areas are colorful and the music is pleasant to listen to. But the gameplay, while very short, fails to keep your attention through the journey and does not offer much replayability either. The game is very short and you can finish it in about 30-40 minutes, but all of that time is spent on doing repetitive tasks through 4 levels: beat randomly respawning enemies by attacking constantly, carry key items around without getting hit to open the way, activate 4 shrines to advance to the next level and finally fight an easy boss. By the third level, the burnout might get to you and make the game seem much more longer than what it really is. And when you finish the game once, you have seen everything it has to offer. Playing as the additional characters follows the same story in the same levels and gives you the same ending, with the only difference being the weapon you are using. The only rewards you get from finishing the game with all 3 characters is a sound mode and the achievements, and those are not enough encouragements to play the game for two or three more times. TL;DR The audiovisual presentation is great but the gameplay, while very short (~40 mins), gets repetitive fast and does not offer much replay value either. Speedrunners might make the best out of this game.

It's a good game but it flat out does not work. It has not worked for many years. Here is a steam post detailing the same critical issue since 2019: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1022480/discussions/0/1639793203782256644/ 'WASD' can change which button you have selected on the main menu, the 'I' key can turn on and off the menu, but no other button works. You can not start the game, you can not look at the options, you can't even quit. The 'submit' key REGARDLESS of binding in the game's launcher does not work. I've tried every binding even mouse buttons, windowed mode, resolutions, unplugging and replugging the keyboard, and graphics settings. Literally unplayable, Skipmore please fix, don't leave this gem in this state.

So far I really like this game! Cute art, good soundtrack, adorable character design, and fun, simple mechanics.

KAMIKO is one of the most underappreciated Switch games to exist and i'm glad the game got ported to Steam so it can find a new audience! The game has beautiful but simple pixel art, simple but effective gameplay, a lovely cast of characters each with their own unique attacks (Yamato is the best) and to end it off with an amazing soundtrack to boot! I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves top down games and people who want to speedrun but need a good short game to start with.

Extremely comfy game, just don't play it at a refresh rate over 60Hz or the character for some reason will run slowly than intended and you'll be unable to complete the game.

Now I have absolutely no reason to get a Switch. Charming little Zelda-like with very simplified stripped-down combat and light puzzles. I'm loving the art style. At this price, I'd definitely recommend it. ------------------------ EDIT: Now that I've beaten the game, here's my full review. From the pixel art and trailers, I was expecting a Zelda-lite, something with minor RPG depth. What I got instead was something much more arcade-y. Gameplay consists of navigating four dungeons, opening chests and flipping switches, to unlock four shrines that act as save points, which, once achieved, unlocks your main gate leading to the end-level boss fight. All this while threading through and mowing down hoards of respawning enemies. You have a choice of three characters with different types of attacks (I’ve only done a full playthrough with one character so far). Some minor annoyances: enemies respawn every time you leave an area and re-enter; this can mean even while on the same screen. Later enemies have ranged missile attacks that are a further annoyance. When you’re carrying an object, you cannot fight. Got a key? Now you have to leg it to the gate while avoiding enemies and missiles, rather than slaughtering them all. This aspect of gameplay almost feels like a bullet-hell rather than Zelda. The pixel art, music, even the fonts and cool kanji-analogues are all top-notch. Controls are tight and responsive. Kamiko felt slightly on the easy side, and that’s coming from someone who is not very good at video games. Other reviewers have said the other character types add further difficulty with their changed-up attack styles. Once you reset your expectations, Kamiko’s charm and arcade-style gameplay are well-worth the asking price. The pixel-art alone is worth the tour. Though short, the additional characters add replay value, and the built-in timer features make clear that Kamiko was designed for speed-running. I played through using an arcade stick and had a blast; it felt like the way it was meant to be played. Kamiko might not be for everyone, but I certainly enjoyed it give it a hearty recommendation.

It's a fun game if you are looking for a simple button masher with casual difficulty, but the combat can get repetitive. You can complete all 4 stages under 90 minutes; each level has a nice aesthetic, easy puzzle and an awesome soundtrack. You can pick between 3 different characters but they only have 2 attacks, additionally to a dash mechanic. I don't mind the actual gameplay, the movement and hitboxes feel good, I just wish the game had more power-ups aside from HP/Stamina increases. I think the developer was hoping that people would find some replay value through speedruns, the game has lots of achievements and times your playthrough to support that (might be a nice experience for achievement hunters). The design of the game resembles an arcade, the enemies respawn each time you leave an area and you have to earn points in order to interact with some objects.
Pros:
+ 3 characters + awesome music, nice visuals + fair difficulty + many achievements
Cons:
Repetitive Combat - I don't mind simple games, but having only 2 attacks for 90 minutes can be underwhelming. If the developer makes another game in a similar style, I would recommend adding a few power-ups that would unlock maybe 2-3 extra moves. It's better to have 1 character with several attacks than 3 characters with 2 moves. Overall Thoughts: 7/10 The gameplay feels good and the music makes it a very positive experience, I just wish it had a few extra moves for each character. You would have to enjoy achievement hunting or speedruns to get more than 90 minutes of content. It's a fun little game. I see a lot of people comparing it to a stripped down Zelda game, it reminded me more of a stripped down Hyper Light Drifter but that's not that different. The controls are weird and it's unfortunate that I couldn't easily remap them or get a controller working. I do have a few criticisms but they are minor: The timed levers are, as they always are in these games, not particularly fun or challenging, more they're just frustrating or boring. Similarly, the sections where you have to carry an orb / key and can't sprint / fight / get hit aren't interesting, either you know how to get past the enemies or you don't. The controls are probably the biggest complaint but there are workarounds using Steam to remap controller or something like autohotkey, I just didn't feel like going through the effort for such a short game. Overall, the first run with one character will take maybe 40-50 minutes, each run after that with a new character maybe 35-40, less if you're really trying. The 3 characters do all play differently and the game is clearly designed around speed runs and trying all 3 characters, however the mechanics and layouts are linear enough where I'm not sure how far the speed running push will take you, by the end of the 3rd character I didn't feel like I had much left to learn about the levels. Definitely worth it for $5, and any sale just makes it more so.

Kamiko is just meh. The art is great and the music is fine, however that's where my praises end. The game-play is very repetitive not to mention the game is only about an hour long with little replayability. As someone who grew up on Zelda I really wanted to like this game but I couldn't even bring myself to finish the last level, which there are only 4 of with most of them being pretty unoriginal visually wise excluding the final level, I was just so bored with the game. For the price I personally can't recommend it.
