Barotrauma except its underground, the best simplified explanation about the entire game

Just finished the game after its release the 24/01/22. Please note that the game is still in early access, and anything I mention here might be included in the final game for all I know. I will also compare the game somewhat to Barotrauma as it feels and plays a lot like it, in my own opinion and is published by the same publisher. The game itself is eerie. I would not say its scary at this stage unless you have some underlying fear of deep caves, tight tunnels or insects and arachnids. You mostly solve puzzles in the game. This is usually by yourself or with other characters you can switch between. Some are able to operate vehicles and others can climb, blow up the ground, and send out drones. The game is published by the same company that delivered us Barotrauma, and the start makes you believe its in the same universe, potentially even location. The Graphics are slightly cartoonish yet with some form of realism to the textures. The gunplay feels nice, personally better than in Barotrauma, while the swimming I feel is not at its peak. I still wonder why developers that work for the same publisher, don't share gameplay elements. Imagine sharing the swimming and water physics (Note the physics of the water seems non-existent) other than bullet penetration with the water. With the developer of this game. I do hope that the Barotrauma team wants, and is allowed a peek at this game. The challenge mode is okay, nothing to brag about. One could want a endless rogue like mode, where you get upgrades in terms of guns, maybe tools, stats, ammo, etc. And just keep going till you die. Getting ever more powerful same as the enemies. The story feels lacking. Every mission feels like a different scenario you are tossed into. They do not feel to be connected. Another way to fool the players mind in this scenario is to do the aforementioned. Add a skill tree, new guns you can carry on to your next mission, new tools. I believe these three things could improve the feeling of the game, giving the player more to work towards. When it comes to bugs, there was one bug I noticed, where I got stuck on a ladder. However the developer, had bugs in mind and added a "Stuck" button on the menu. Allowing you to "unstuck" yourself. Lastly there was another error which the developer knows about, and has mentioned on the discussion page already. Should you get the game? If I were you and just want a six hour neat game with puzzles, horror elements and high death rate. Go ahead! Especially to promote new developers. Remember this game is made by a single developer. Its not finished, and has a long way to go. To do so he will need funding, which is another reason for Early access! If you want to play another rogue like such as Barotrauma because it looks the same. Wait.... Its not the same. Its linear "AS OF NOW". Not made by the same people, but published under the same publisher. It may look similar, but don't be fooled. Its just as with "The Thing". However if you have money to spare, and read the last part. Go for it! Help fund the development, and have a fun time while trying out something new. Its still a good game.

So, this game looked extremely interesting and the game inspirations mentioned made it a very easy thing to justify picking up. Now I know EA games don't come with all their content ready for consumption, but I have significant grievances on what I was sold for the release, such as it is of EA. First off, let me state that yes, i'm aware this is EA, and the game can change dramatically. That's fine and all. Problem is, the trailers show case a TON of stuff that simply doesn't exist in the game, and is very misleading into what sort of game it is outright. On to the meat the of the review, i'll comment on a few things. First a brief summary, basic TL;DR via Pro and Con. Pros of the game - Good atmosphere. Uses the graphics it has and the sound to very good effect. The monsters look good, and the trailer enemies look fantastic, shame they don't exist in the game. - Good potential. This much I don't doubt, and i hope to swap this to a recommend in the future. Cons - Insane pricetag for what was offered, even for an Early Access title. I've played a lot of games from their release from Early Access, but this is a first where i get so little for such an ask. - Bad platforming, which is 90% of the game. Wish this was an understatement, my playtime is 9 hours of me dying to a very , very bad platforming game, which is clearly not designed to be a platforming game. - Artificial difficulty. Spawning enemies where you can't draw your weapon and deal with them is a constant and very annoying thing to deal with. you can't reload on the wire - better spawn a large wave of flying enemies while you're on a ladder and can't fight back or run away. Ect. It's a personal pet peeve that constantly was being triggered. - Lifeless world. I am aware we're in an underwater facility, but there are no NPCs doing mundane tasks with us fixing up the place. This can be fixed down the road but I mean, it's been very uninspired. Diving into abandoned tunnels filled with critters leads to a constant fight reflex and allows no horror to build up. That's about all I can think of for a quick Pro and Con of the game, in it's current state of 2022/01/25. The trailer really made me thought I was buying into a more squad based survival management horror game. There is the straight up thing 'ambush the medic' thing, which i thought for sure was going to present in the game. But any body I found was just a corpse, and after saw how 'squad' stuff is handled, I can very much so say I am not keen on how the game is handling 'other characters'. You've pushed yourself into a weird direction, with a lot of the game fighting it's own mechanics at every turn. It's theme isn't good for constant fighting, which this has turned out to be. The lives based system made investment on the character null quickly. And no, I won't play realism when the game will outright kill me for moving a slight bit faster than the non-kill threshold. I am not that much of masochist, and don't want to waste my time that much just to experience a true attachment to my 'characters'. Again, lives in a horror survival game just seems to be combating the elements you have. Having a number of squad members with specific roles is how I figured every map would be, using their kits to transverse and being put in tough, but not unwinnable spots if they died due to the nature of what the game was 'seeming' to want to be. But worse is the platforming you've put in. The game is so fickle with what is acceptable drops and what isn't that it extended my playtime far more than I would ever have needed for any other game, and it's not because of anything other than that the mechanic is heavily un-tuned. To the extent I am amazed you found it in a state that was worth selling, like considering how much of the content is reliant on it i'd figured you'd want people to have a GOOD experience with what you just released, but hey your call. I have as of this review, asked for a refund, but I am eager to see if this game changes for the better, at least in my opinion and maybe sometime down the year i'll be able to kick this reviews ass and put in one that praises the game instead. Until then, good luck with your game dev man, and to my fellow gamers, definitely keep an eye on the game, but maybe hold off on buying if this sounds like you might be making a mistake such as i did.

It's an alright game for what it is. However, i found it much too easily to get softlocked and ruin the entire level. Engineers are the only ones who can use the machines, and if they respawn too far away from what you need them to use, there's a very real chance youve just softlocked yourself out of the whole level. A single mistake with a machine can cost you a real life 30 minutes. I can't recommend this game in its current state

Just finished it on the hardest difficulty setting (not the extra two that appear afterwards) the monsters in the advert aren't actually in the game. bit weird. i thought it would be much better from the advert, turned out to be a bit samey with not an awful lot happening.

Very atmospheric action-horror exploration game. Similar to Barotrauma in control scheme, and the physics-driven movement of your character and other objects. At the moment (Feb 1, 2022), it's incredibly easy to soft-lock yourself on some missions and be forced to restart, which can wipe out 30+ mins of progress (though it won't take you nearly that long on the second attempt because you know what to do). tl;dr If you'd like an experience somewhere between an SCP and Dead Space with Barotrauma-like controls, where you explore large cave systems with your team, Hidden Deep is for you. But keep in mind that it's got its fair share of wonky physics stuff that can and will make you restart a level.

In 1982 John Carpenter's The Thing set the stage in pop culture as a keynote for suspense and cosmic horror involving a cell-restructuring parasite. Decades later, the evolution of cosmic and body horror involving alien organisms and grotesque human malformation have spawned games such as Dead Space and Aliens. Hidden Deep is an attempt at replicating some form of the suspense and horror that iconic alien media has achieved. In concept, it sounds like it. The game mainly focuses on exploring caverns and mining shafts with a soldier character that has a gun and exploration tools such as grappling hooks and scanner drones, then switching to engineer characters that can operate various machinery to solve puzzles to clear the way forward. If the thought of dark caverns filled with unknown hostile alien life and a high mortality rate sound great to you, hold on. The concept is solid, and there are genuinely good moments that speak well to the horror nature of the game. Rappelling down a dark cave while controlling your descent so as to avoid an untimely death by swinging too hard against a wall, you hear horrific creature noises down in the depths somewhere. Your flashlight extends out and catches a glimpse of some bloody mess of organs that comes towards you. You draw your pistol out and fire into the darkness, each shot having a loud, impactful boom whilst lighting the darkness up, rounds clinking off the ground. The gameplay does show its potential at times. Between the action focused exploration and combat, engineer based gameplay can be interesting. Remote controlling lifts to ferry equipment across chasms while controlling the speed so as to not accidentally smash or swing the load off the lift, building bridges and pushing boxes with loaders are some of the vehicle interactions available. As a single player game, you assume control of up to five different crewmen, one at a time. While definitely serviceable, there are times when the game feels rather clunky due to enemies attacking an uncontrolled character, which requires you to cycle through to that character and arm your weapon to deal with the threat. Ultimately though, these mechanics while working, are let down by the lack of user experience polish throughout the game. Trying to attach on ladders is a clunky experience of running back and forth trying to find a pixel perfect point where you can jump to grab a ladder. Your character has a jump and a way to catch ledges, but knee-height ledges are unable to be passed as there are no interactions set up for them. Getting soft locked in a terrain along the main path unable to proceed is quite a common occurrence, so much so that the game offers a stuck recovery option that consumes a life to respawn your character. Environments, while immersive - are lacking, since most of the game revolves around a very limited set of assets that are the same identical rooms and shafts scattered around the one cave environment. Perhaps more variety would have helped, since by hour three you would have felt like there was no sense of exploration or motivation to continue past getting to the end point of whatever you have ended up in, in large part due to a lack of substantial story delivery or interesting environment changes. There is barely any dialog or story points. You get told to get to the next area at the start of each map, and that is it. The enemies themselves are interesting, although nothing you won't find elsewhere. The main enemies are flying bat like creatures that can deposit a slug that attacks you. Sometimes there is a noticeable hole in the roof and a bloodworm comes out that can insta-kill you. There are other varieties, but all in all the enemies do not feel much like a danger, rather an annoyance. This is mainly because there is a predefined method of dealing with them, mostly aiming your gun into unexplored areas, then firing a shot to draw them and then just shoot. There is no suspense or fear associated because lives are so disposable and enemies are so predictable, missing the mark of pop culture icons such as The Thing where you never knew who or how to fight your way out. Again, this was a stated inspiration for this game. Coop is available, but very limited. There is a side challenge mode where coop is optional with a controller plugged in (Splitscreen or remote play) for 2 players and it is the exact same map on the exact same mode. Overall, do I reccomend it? Not at this stage. There is a solid foundation for a good game here, but unfortunately in its current state it is lacking enough substance to be worth its asking price. The atmosphere? Great. The sounds? Great. Potential? Amazing. Delivery and execution? Lacking.

Completed the story (Expedition Mode) until completion which is currently Day 72 'THE ANOMALY', the game is incredibly atmospheric and detailed, the sound utilized such as ambience which reinforces the whole massive maps that you have to spelunk, the gunplay is good with visuals such as firearm cycling and shell ejection aswell as sound and muzzle flash. The game covers all corners with detail such as the ropes interracting with the world and angles and materials where the hook does not stick. The game in its current state is wonderful for a singleplayer experience lasting 8+ hours excluding the challenges which have unique map generation per playthrough. I would love to see multiplayer made easier for WAN multiplayer instead of remote play and splitscreen. The pathing can sometimes be a bit janky but very rarely. I seriously enjoy this game and its barotrauma esque visuals.

Ok so, this one is a bit complicated for me. I love the premise, and I understand this game comes from either a small team or a one man dev which in that own right it is really impressive. However even considering that, it is just not to my personal taste. I came in this game expecting a different experience than the one it offers. The game itself seems to be a combination of several things. The thing, the descent, and half life. A wonderful proposition in itself. Though for me, it is too much half life. The trailers made it seem like a plunge into a horrifying and hopeless situation. One where I would encounter terrifying monstrosities and battle for my life. The actual game is in my own personal opinion, far from it. I've encountered the fodder enemies so commonly I feel nothing when I see them other than annoyance. While I can appreciate the idea of the delving aspect, I feel like it's too much of the focus with no horror to back it up at all; all the while taking place in bland areas. The gameplay loop of having others and crew death counters when you die is interesting in concept, but only furthers to take away from the tension. I realize i'm not that far into the game, but at this rate the normal enemies and loop don't compel me to continue. I understand this may be my own taste, but I think it's something to say that this game is more tedious task than scary, if scary at all. I wish the dev luck and I may revisit it at some point, but as of right now it is not for me.
