Well, I think the amount of hours I have in the game may tell you how much I like this game. But I have to tell you a tale first: Godhood was not a good game. For the first 3 or 4 months of its life, it was actually a bad game and I wouldn't reccomend it for sure. However, so much care and time was put by the developers into it that it slowly blossomed out as a fantastic roster management game. As of 1.0, it is a great game that is totally worth the price. That said, I'll tell you what godhood is NOT. Godhood is NOT a god game. You won't find here gameplay alike Populous, Black & White or even Reus (also from Abbey Games). In Godhood, the core gameplay comes from developing and managing a small band of disciples to do your bidding, and its much more a strategy/management game than a simulation/godgame. However, if you do like strategy games, I fully reccomend it. Also, it can go easily from casual to very hardcore, so you can find fun on it regardless of your preferred difficulty levels.

TL;DR: This is a very 'ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh' recommend. I like the game. I had fun playing it. BUT: it feels like half a game and not worth full price (in other words: buy it on sale) --------------(the finer details)------------ I don't know why this is, but I like Abbey Games' stuff to the point I might be a fan. But being a fan of Abbey Games is like being a fan of Kalypso Media; they're not a huge developer, don't have rock star talent, produce modest games, and what they make tends to be playable and enjoyable despite having flaws. They have their own distinctive style and this is maybe the biggest appeal to me for ??? reasons. Godhood is a game that, on paper and in the trailer, looks to have loads of promise. The impressions both produce are extremely misleading. I'm not entirely sure of Godhood is completed or more is still to come, but in its current state, this game is Abbey Games' weakest product. Its not bad, just comes across as not fully realized. I wouldn't call Godhood a 'God game'. Do you get to create a god? Yes. Do you get to do actual god stuff like in AAARGH! on the Amiga? (I'm actually referencing that game because of its box art. It looks cool) No. Not really. The god aspect is something Godhood uses more as a premise and theme FOR the game and not to BE the game. I also wouldn't call Godhood a simulation. The sim stuff available to the player is an extremely lite version of a civ simulator or management game. And its so lite, its almost non-existent. This is the reason I say Godhood is 1/2 a game. This sim part feels like there should be way more to it. It's so bare bones and underdeveloped its disappointing. Gaining followers only serves as a point system. They don't grow your community. They never ask for guidance or help. 95% of this mode is spent developing your disciples (80% speeding up rituals, 20% touching them when they get grumpy face faith). The remaining 5% is constructing buildings to power up your disciples. I was expecting something vaguely similar to the sim aspect of Actraiser, but there's almost nothing to this mode. Its really underwhelming and dull! The actual 1/2 that feels complete deals with the combat. The main focus the player has in Godhood is to strengthen their disciples to fight in automated battles. And this half of the game is distinctly not god or sim game, and very board gamey and pokemon like. Its good, but very repetitive and one note. Not gonna lie. I liked it enough to be hooked for 2 straight games start to finish. The only other feature I haven't spoken of is the tenets and tradition system. And all that does is provide a theme for flavor text for the rare random events that happen in sim mode, civ bonuses, and what special commands you can offer your followers/disciples. Godhood is one of those Steam games where if there were a selection between recommend and do not recommend, I'd pick that one. This game is not a must have, its too expensive, feels half baked, and the fun only lasts until it gets too repetitive, but I picked recommend because I actually had fun with it and bought it on sale for 40% off. If you're thinking on getting Godhood, but undecided, check out Abbey Games' other game Renowned Explorers. If you do not have that game, I absolutely recommend the hell out of it. Totally different game, but very fun and frequently goes on sale for cheap. I don't know if anyone is gonna read up to this point, but I hope the developers aren't finished with Godhood. The sim part needs some additional content to nudge me into giving a firm 'recommend'.

As a fan of God and Simulation games, I have to admit I am overall disappointed in this game. Perhaps I went into the game expecting the wrong things. There is no simulation at all and customization of your religion isn't possible. You simply decide on a single virtue at the start of the game which dictates some very simple rewards. The city itself isn't simulated, as the followers just run around doing whatever. There is no management beyond telling up to three of your followers to do a simple, repetitive task and then hitting the 'Next day' button. They do not gather resources, they don't go about daily lives, they just wonder aimlessly and are only for background graphics. Your management of the city itself is limited to 'inspiring' the building of larger buildings, which isn't any more complex than picking a building from a menu and plopping it into an open tile. Sometimes a potential additional prophet will claim they are the bloodline of your current disciple, but they just spawned magically at the moment of selection and don't have any further depth than that. Each turn consists of you selecting up to three tasks for your disciples to do, each one can only handle one task. When the task is selected, the disciple will move to the building in question and do a basic 'casting animation.' You then select a city to attack, which is an automated combat system with is heavily based on RNG. Each team has health for each of the characters in combat as well as a total health pool and turn limit. The team to get the other pool to zero, or the lowest at the end of the turn, wins. It's not engaging and beside selecting what disciples you wish to partake in combat, there is no influence provided by the player. And that's it. As the game progresses you get more buildings to plop onto empty tiles, you collect followers from these RNG automated battles which pile up meaninglessly into a que to increase your God level, and you get more disciples to manage - but remember, you can only command three per day. And if you don't command one for a while to do a simple task, they get upset and start to lose faith. The game is basic and simple with no real interaction or customization. You aren't creating a religion as much as you are following a preset one, you aren't creating a god any more than just putting random parts together to make a custom icon and changing the names of variables to suit you. There's no meaningful change you can make, and watching a streamer play the game is just as engaging as playing it yourself. The game has the overall quality and depth of a mobile game, and I feel like it would be more suited on that platform. Currently, I cannot recommend it and I am overall disappointed with my purchase. Edit: At the developers request (below) I will take another look at the game in a month and update my review to reflect any changes.

I had great hopes for this game, especially as a fan of Renowned Explorers. Unfortunately, even on sale it's not worth the price point. While it's entertaining to create your god and entertain the idea of how traditions and tenets will influence your society's development, the tenets seem to have little effect on your society. As another review mentioned, this game essentially ends up being a stat manager, having little to no focus on the actual development of your civilization. What's more, combat seems completely random, with stats giving little indication as to the likelihood of your success. Seeing as the entire game is mainly stat-focused, the amount of RNG that goes into combat you have no control of is astounding. A lot of battles seem to boil down to 'click the button, hope for the best' even after a solid 10 hours learning game mechanics. This game leaves promise unfulfilled. I hope the devs consider polishing it more and finding a way to make it more strategic and satisfying to play. As it is it's an okay game if you simply don't want to think at all, but even victory feels hollow when you feel like your game was mostly weighted on chance. If you want a terrific game from Abbey Games, just go get Renowned Explorers. It's far more polished and satisfying to play.

TLDR: As of update #6 this game is quite good now and fully playable I have been a long-time fan of Abbey Games (enjoyed REUS and Renowned Explorers is one of my favourite games of all time). Like Renowned Explorers this game is deeper than it looks at first, and that is something that really intrigues me. I think it is important to take the game for what it is, i.e. a team management game and I think it does a great job with that. It is definitely not as random as it might seem, you do have a fair bit of control of how the sacraments (the battles) play out with careful planning beforehand. The thing to understand that this is not a god game in the usual sense, where you are an omnipotent deity that casts spells, performs miracles or lays waste to the enemy. You are just a concept for the little people, for all intents and purposes you might not even exist as a god. As such it makes sense that your little people have complete free will ... it works, you just need to know what to expect. As of the latest update (#6 Tenets and Traditions), this game is now pretty good (considering that it is still in early access). Yes polish is still lacking a bit, some features are not fully balanced, the UI and tooltips could do with a little bit of TLC, but it is perfectly possible to have an enjoyable run through and complete it to the end (there are only 3 islands unlocked from what will eventually be 6). It is also stable, I played 4 complete runthroughs and didn't experience any crashes or other game-breaking bugs. The game recently changed its mechanic to force you onwards, replacing a pretty dull skull system by a much more developed happiness system that has a push your luck element to it. See you can decide not to press ahead and instead 'grind' your crew on repeatable missions but your people will lose trust in you and this in turn will increase the chance that bad events might occur (people leaving, infighting, less rewards ... ) It's a nice mechanic and works well. The reward from missions is also much improved, and it is clearer what you get. Great for a game that fundamentally is very path-dependent and rewards you for planning ahead and making the right moves at each stage. Finally the titular Tenets and Traditions are a great way to shape your religion and in return your team. I have nowhere seen all of them but what I have seen allows for some game-changing strategies (there are some that award you having teams made out of disciples with certain skills, other reward you for focussing on certain attributes, there is even one that rewards you each time one of your disciples dies!). This game is definitely worth supporting. Abbey Games have shown that they care about their players, are active in the community and have amazing post release support. (Renowned explorers was not that impressive on release, but the community helped shape it and after 2 expansions plus a ton of free content it is just awesome - if you haven't go and try it out!) Now let's get back to worshiping "He Who Impresses Sheep" ...

This is a strategy/fighting game and not a society simulator. Choices made are about mathematical advantage and have very little impact on the appearance of your "society."

I want to like this. But right now, it feels slow... boring even. Nothing that I could do felt God-like. i didn't really feel like I was making a religion to suit my will. I guess I was hoping to be more of a god, less of a collect 40 faith to do this action that can only be pulled off by one of my welps. This feels like a large scale phone game. Updating this review from 2019 I note that though many things did change from when I wrote this review, it seems like not enough has changed to make it worth playing. Like I said before, it's not a bad game per-say, but there is something missing that gives it that jazz I'm looking for.

First of all: GODHOOD is a really sweet game! Graphics are cute, animations are smooth and the overall art style is really pretty! The concept itself is also nice - a god sending it's followers of to conquer the world in it's name. All of this would deserve a THUMBS UP by itself already... (and just fyi: the Devs are extremly helpfull, very sweet and really taking feedback seriously!!) ...and here is the "why not": Overall you have not much to do. The fighting concept is reminding me of a lot of Trading Card Games and even a bit of Pokemon. Skill A is effective against Skill B but ineffective against Skill C and can in return be outperformed by Skill D - with some further additions like free moves, double strikes and such. In a nutshell: it's a glorified and complicated "Rock-Skissor-Paper" game. Even while preparing to power up your village and gather resources, it's mostly sending your fighters off for one turn to collect stuff to enhance buildings to collect more stuff. After a while you go on autopilot and especially when you build everything there is, there is no incentive to do it further more. While beeing a really GOOD looking game and showing a lot of hard work and efford put into it, what you can do in this game is really not enough. It feels more like a pretty but casual mobile game, then a PC game - and does in m.o. not justify the price. I am looking forward tho, to see how this game develops, hoping for more variety, more things you can actually do, more insentive on making your god unique and maybe even shift and transform by doing tasks in the game. Untill then I wouldn't spend over 20€ on this game

Godhood is an excellent game for people who like management sims or for people who've tried a lot of cookie cutter games and want to see something a bit different. Despite the tags it's not a god game, you won't be hurling villagers across the map or controlling the weather. I'd describe it as a turn based strategy game, in contrast to a turn based tactics game. The cut and thrust of the fights (called sacraments) plays out automatically and the meaningful decisions all lie in how you prepare your disciples - what classes they take, what rituals they perform, what buildings your town has, which passives they pick on level up, who gets your artifacts, which sacraments are worth your god powers and what the tenets of your religion actually are. Early access was quite a ride with this one, it always had the kern of a good idea, but realising it wasn't easy. Some of the early builds were not great, the game bears nothing more than an skin deep resembalnce to the one I started playing - but the devs have been excellent at handling bug reports, listening to community feedback, and generally making the game better with each iteration. The religion building is presently a blast. Often your situation calls for a particular type of upgrade (Say one that gives happiness) but there are usually 2-4 options in that category that let you define yourself - do you want your people to have joyful sermons or to form a secret cult? These then lead to more powerful options that can dramatically alter your gameplay in ways that if not logical to you at least make sense to your disciples. I had a game where I'd told them to engage in hedonistic parties and one comes out with "You know what'd make an unforgettable party..." and human sacrifice was unlocked. If this seems at all like your sort of game I'd suggest giving it a go, it's not perfect, but it's uniquely itself and isn't afraid to take some risks to offer a different sort of gameplay.

Ok, so being a fan of Abbey games, I was chomping at the bit to try out their newest game. I am very much a fan of their style of games. That said, as much as I like this game, I realize only diehard fans such as myself will really be able to get into it. Having had my wife play it and be bored with it right after creating her goddess of dragons pretty much said it all. The game lacks depth. Once you're done creating your god, that's pretty much where your creative input ends. From then on it's just a point and click game with very repetitive gameplay and very limited options. In its current state, it's just a relaxing time sink to just chill to and therefore may not be for everyone. HOWEVER. Knowing the developers like I do, I am confident they will add options and features. Renowned Explorers started off a little rough around the edges too, and after a few years of constant back and forth with the fanbase and the unique challenges posted weekly on the steam forum for that game, I found that they are very much open to suggestions to fine tune their games and make them even more fun. So here's a few of my suggestions, from a humble Abbey games enthusiast; 1. Make the maps random. I've played as 4 gods now, and the map has always been the same. 2. Make more story options at the start than "guy lost in a god battle and swears to come back to squash the old town". Have them be random OR chosen, i'd experiment with both and see what the fans like. 3. The 3 actions limit has some issues. When you have 3 prophets being active and the other 5 being static, I feel like i'm not getting my gameplay's worth when I've got so many idle guys lying around. I'd like my guys all able to do something, maybe minor tasks can be assigned to them so it doesn't feel like i'm losing out on gameplay? Maybe the "favorites" can get faith bonuses for you choosing them and the guys who get relegated to say, cleaning out huts starts to question his faith? Just some thoughts. 4. Ok. So I spend like 6 sky stones to make the perfect killing machine... and then because I used up a miracle, my +3 attack gets randomly replaced with a lv 1 shitty attack that doesn't even go with my build?!?!? I thought miracles were supposed to be MAGICAL, not detrimental! Sometimes you get punished for leveling up your prophet!!! Not cool, devs. 5. More story options. 6. 40 years of age is too soon for a prophet to get old and lose stats. Let my boys live a little longer so I can enjoy them a little longer. Hell, make it so some die out young! You know, make my guys a little more... human? More relatable? In REIS, you had 20+ characters all with huge personalities that were so fun to play and relate to... i'd like my prophets to be a little more like that! RIght now they feel like robots whom I have to retire at the age of 40 so my 16 year old guys can take their job. 7. More diversity in the relics. I ended up with 20-30 useless books I couldn't even equip on anyone, and I can't burn them, sell them, desynth them for points, they just lie there collecting dust... and all of them are +10 faith and +1 random stat type items which seems like a waste. 8. More rival gods, and having to defend your territory. Right now, I know that if I invade a spot, it stays invaded. It's kinda...sad. I want to curse at my computer and toss a keyboard at some point because some douchebag rival god took my 'good' spot. It would add to the whole "you're competing" feel. Right now it's like i'm just waiting to get to 1000 followers so I can complete my puzzle and go to sleep rather than "I NEED TO GET TO 1000 BEFORE THAT OTHER GOD DOES OR I LOSE!" making an actual game over possible, like in REIS when things dont go your way. 9. Make the spots you invade actually mean something. Right now, other than to level up my prophets and have them get to their miracles faster, there's no real reason to invade anywhere. I want to feel like there is a real advantage to invading one spot over another rather than "Well, this spot has 3 Druids, so I can easily destroy them with my 3 Weavers and get 10 followers!" This would make point #8 more important too; if I KNOW I'm getting X important resources from this spot, I'm gonna want to defend it more. This would also mean I'd have a use for those 5 prophets I got there sitting collecting dust. I still give it a thumbs up because I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was. I love the music, the aesthetic, the concept and the people making it. It just needs some fine tuning now. I know you can do it, Abbey Games!
