Introduction
Who would've thought the best Bioware-style RPG I would play in 2018 would come from a Taiwanese developer? 甲山林娛樂 (JSLGame) brings us 天命奇御 / Fate Seeker and it's almost everything I've ever wanted from a Chinese Wuxia RPG. An engaging story, dynamic combat, and an evocative presentation make Fate Seeker an easy recommendation for fans of wuxia RPGs. Before we move on, however, it's worth noting that at the time of this review, an English localization is not available for Fate Seeker. Currently, the game supports simplified and traditional Chinese only. As the game is heavily narrative-driven, those who cannot read Chinese will struggle both to understand the plot and even to progress the story; there are no quest markers in the game and a major element of gameplay involves presenting the right quest items to the right NPCs. Unfortunately, this game is not currently friendly to non-Chinese speakers.
Story
Fate Seeker is set in the early years of the Song Dynasty in China. Despite the government and populace settling into a period of burgeoning peace and growth, in the martial world of Jianghu, unrest foments. The Cult of Mani (摩尼教) begins a plan years in the making to upend the world for its own ambitions. It is into this backdrop that the protagonist Chai Nie Feng finds himself. Spurred to stop the cult's plans for both personal and honorable reasons, he travels Jianghu, gathering allies, mastering martial arts, and uncovering the truth behind the cult's sinister plot. On a surface level, the story could not be more generic. Where it succeeds is in its execution. Nie Fung is a protagonist brimming with personality, brought forth by competent writing and excellent characterization. While his backstory is predictable and falls a little too hard into cliched Mary-Sue territory, his interactions with friends, enemies, love interests (some who are all of the above) manage to keep him a compelling avatar for the player. Much of his dialogue is clever and humorous; he's an easy hero to get behind. The supporting cast is given less room to breathe, especially since you can only have one ally travel with you at a time, but they manage to eke out their own personalities and subplots, mostly with success. Nie Feng's interactions with the mysterious Zhao Shen and the vitriolic (literally) Xin Ruo Mei were highlights, along with his contentious rapport with his booze-swilling martial arts master, Liang Ren Hao. It's through these characters that the plot's stakes are raised; your actions (and inaction) have effects on their fates and the plot's ultimate outcome (though, this may be limited to the narrative's resolution). Various plot twists and sudden revelations keep the story from bogging down; the game does a good job of balancing the surprises between predictable and out of left field.
Graphics & Sound
The visual and audio presentations are a bit of a mixed bag. The graphics are serviceable, but nowhere near the level of most recent western RPGs. They are along the lines of Dragon Age 2, which released in 2011. The tech behind Chinese RPGs is just not comparable to Western RPGs yet. The saving grace is the game's fighting animations, which do not disappoint (thankfully so, especially for a Wuxia RPG). The sound design in the game is a bit of a disappointment. The background music is mostly innocuous, but the way it loops can quickly cause certain short tracks to become grating on the ears. Sound effects are also lackluster, particularly the blips that accompany interacting with the game's menus. Again, those found in combat are at least competent. Voice acting in the game is excellent ... where it can be found. Most combat is filled with superbly-acted dialogue as combatants trade barbs and declare attacks. The game's opening act also features a lot of excellent voice acting ... but that only made it all the more disappointing when the game decided to abandon all voice acting afterwards (outside of the aforementioned dialogue during combat). Fate Seeker is a highly text-heavy game; while reading all that Chinese conveyed the story in a competent enough manner, having the dialogue voice-acted would have made the experience even better.
Gameplay
Actual gameplay is typical to any RPG, eastern or western. You run around and explore various locales, from sprawling cities to hidden villages, pursuing the main narrative. A world map provides you easy access to each area. Along the way, you'll collect side quests that range from heavily story-driven affairs, rescuing allies and solving mysteries, to uncovering crafting schematics to forge weapons and consumables. When you're forced into combat - and expect for that to happen a lot - gameplay switches to the combat system. Fighting is real-time and - for the most part - frenetic and exciting. Nie Feng's martial arts abilities work on a cooldown system; his selection of martial arts differs based on the weapon he has currently equipped. There are four different types of weapons (swords, sabres, polearms and fists), each with three unlockable martial arts styles, all with their own unique movements, capabilities and situational advantages. Each style features a series of basic moves that have short cooldowns, along with an ultimate attack that takes longer to use again. Switching between martial arts styles mid-battle is possible, but results in a heavy cooldown being applied to the ultimate attack. The result is a free-flowing combat system. The game requires players to consider positioning, dodging enemy assaults and timing the right attacks at the right opportunities; button mashing will only get you so far. The excellent fighting animations make combat thrilling to watch and the ability to switch styles keeps battles dynamic. Challenging bosses provide a satisfying level of difficulty, although a little grinding can go a long way to make difficult fights easier. A few design elements negatively affect combat in the game. While one can switch between styles at any time, switching between weapons requires accessing the equipment menu interface, disrupting the flow of battle. Enemy variety is also somewhat lacking, apart from the many different bosses. Still, these are ultimately minor nitpicks in an otherwise engaging experience. Once victory is gained, Nie Feng receives "Training" points, which can be spent to increase his mastery in different schools of Martial Arts (which also increases his base stats like health, energy, etc.). A Ba Gua stat system comparable to DnD ability scores further affects Nie Feng's remaining stats (including but not limited to intelligence, movement speed, and critical hit rate). These stats can only be increased by completing quests and tasks available across China. Players have free reign to improve the Ba Gua stats and martial arts training as they choose; leveling is flexible and allows you to decide when and how to grow Nie Feng's capabilities.
Closing Thoughts
While playing Fate Seeker, I could not help but recall the nostalgia of playing an excellent Bioware game. A competent story coupled with an excellent cast of characters makes for fun times, particularly when set in a genre that I've been longing to revisit since Jade Empire over a decade ago. For RPG fans who can read Chinese, I cannot recommend Fate Seeker enough. And for those who can't, the community discussions on Steam include a thread that already spans over a hundred comments petitioning the developers for an English localization. Maybe the developers will be spurred to translate the game? One can only hope!
Recommended For:
+ Fans of stories in their games + Fans who like their games with atmosphere and style + Fans of Wuxia + Fans that can read Chinese!
Not Recommended For:
- Players who can't read Chinese. :( - Players who need their games to look and sound pretty.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Ratings 10/10 (Chinese Martial Arts RPG, Open World, Real Time Combat) This is one of the best Chinese Martial Arts RPG that I have come across in the last 10 years. However, it is currently in Chinese only and has not yet been localized in any other languages. So, you definitely need to understand Chinese to play this game. What is extremely attractive about this game is that it has an extremely huge open world. You are free to go to different locations and learn different type of martial arts, etc. A lot of the adventure is story driven, and since the world is so big, what you will ultimately become is a mixture of both of your random exploration and what you encounter. This game has a very interesting storyline, and a lot of your adventures are strongly driven by stories and quest items. What skills you learn, what weapons you will have, and what style of martial arts are all driven by a chain of quest items. For some reason, it reminds me of the old Sierra King Quest series, where there are a lot of quest items, and trying to solve these quest items (like who to give certain items to, how to combine them, etc) will ultimately drive the story forward. The fighting in this game is actually not turn-based, but real time. If you do not react fast enough, by pressing the right sequence of martial arts skills, you will be killed. This part is really difficult for me, as I am more comfortable with turn-based games where I can make my move "slowly". However, I have been enjoying this game very much. The graphics are excellent, and the main quests have Chinese voice acting. There is great attention to details in every building and every city that you visit. A tremendous amount of work has been put in by the developers to make the game world immersive and realistic. I highly recommend this game for any Chinese RPG gamer.

First of all, I don't know chinese but I still bought this game. Why? because luckily in my country we have a translation patch. So here I am, after 30+ hours finishing the game. I decided to write a review in english so that in the future, when the game is localized in english. People will know what to expect. -GAME PLAY: Okay, believe it or not I don't think this is an RPG game. In fact this game is actually an adventure game with RPG elements. There is a lot of talking, walking, guessing what this item do and where the hell is the **** item I needed to complete this god**** quest. Compared to that, battles are few and far between. Fortunately every quest is unique, each have their own story and often they are linked together. Unfortunately, some quest really need a marked system, and seriously better quest descriptions . It fine and all to make players use their brain, but as time goes on it's really hard to memorize who is who, where they are and what they need. -STORY: This is a wuxia game, and it definitely hit every wuxia tropes there is. That said, I still find the story enjoyable. It's a light hearted story that should be easy to get into for those that new to the genre. -GRAPHIC: Ehh, it's okay. This is not an AAA game obviously. I liked the characters design. -SOUND: Good news: the voice acting is good, Bad news: there barely any. Also the music is forgetable, a shame... Overall I like the game, truth is the game is a solid 7/10. But I will gave it an 8/10 because I see a lot of potential in this. Thank you Developer for the good game. Oh by the way there's waifus in this, and you can have a harem ending. CHEER!
