About the Game

A strange signal... an alien craft... an interplanetary, gravity-defying journey through space and time.

On the anniversary of the Jupiter disaster, an alien signal transmits construction blueprints for an alien craft, which humanity builds, called Exo One.

Master a truly alien traversal system and move through enigmatic and desolate alien landscapes in ways you've never experienced. Control gravity itself and build momentum to reach colossal speeds and exhilarating heights.

Ride thermal updrafts into boiling cloud formations, careen down hillsides and launch off mountain tops, all the time drifting toward the shining blue beam on the horizon. Atmospheric, diffused visuals are merged with otherworldly sound effects and a hypnotic electric guitar soundtrack.

Pilot your craft on mankind's first voyage outside the solar system, and go on an interplanetary journey across space and time.

Gameplay was very fun. Story very boring. And length too short. Only buy on a big sale.

Game is great but it could really use some kind of endless mode for replayability

The game is great but lacks some additional game modes. You cannot choose "maps" after finishing the game, so the only option is to play everything again. I hope these additions come shortly.

I’m not sure how to proceed with this one…..bear with me and please hear me out. Exo One is a game I really liked but cannot recommend to you. You need to be of a certain ilk to get into this one and I really suggest watching a few bits of a playthrough and reading reviews on both sides of the fence. I am giving Exo One the thumbs up because it definitely does not deserve a thumbs down. But this is not a thumbs up in the way that if you like a certain kind of game then you will enjoy this. More like I liked it, everyone else on here seems to be going gaga for it but I can’t help but feel a lot of the reviews here are part of the Kickstarter crowd or were at least following it. I honestly expected a Mixed or Positive average on Steam. Not an Overwhelmingly Positive for sure.
THE PROS

+ ground control to Major Tom. The whole space exploration vibe that this game gives off is neat and you get a sense of the vastness of the universe. You definitely feel very Kubrick 2001 playing this.

+ controls? I’m putting this as a pro but it only kind of is a pro once you become a master. The game is like riding a bike. You will fall off a bunch, get frustrated a lot and maybe even consider quitting. However if you try harder you will become a master and you will be timing epic drops onto the sides of mountains and then flying into the sky with ease.

+ relaxing. The game is pretty chill and its quite a soothing experience to soar through the air and break the sound barrier.

+ What you see is what you get. Exo One is very honest about what it is and you can quite early on decide if this game is for you or not and refund it.

THE CONS

- dive in at the shallow end. Sure the worlds are huge and sprawling in every direction but all those directions lead to nothing. It feels procedurally generated….until the game decides it isn’t….which should be the title of my next con.

- UNTIL IT ISN’T. You will run out of energy and fall to the ground until the game has something it wants to show off and then magically you will keep on having just enough juice in the tank to continue flying. The worlds unfurl in every direction with not really much to see until you get on the rails and head for that laser in the distance. The game wants to put you under pressure at certain points until it decides ok, that was a fun bit of drama, it’s all over now.

- controls? So here we are again. I listed controls as a pro. Yes they are fun. Until they aren’t. The games difficult camera angles make controlling very hard at times. There are points where you can’t even see your craft and just basically have to kind of guess and hope for the best.

- “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” Don’t get me wrong. I fully defend Dear Esther’s lack of a sprint button. I am all for taaaaaakiiiiiinnnnnnng iiiiiiiiiit slowwwwwwwwww. But the vast stretches of empty space in Exo One have one major difference from Dear Esther. Dear Esther had something special to gawk at in each zone you were in and when you turned a corner (eventually) there was another. Yes, the worlds of Exo One are amazing. When you arrive in a new world you will most likely be blown away but within that world there is very little variety.

- camera. The camera is so boxed in. Maybe there is a way to get around this by toying with the FOV but I just want something to work out of the box and the free looking around is so tight when you want to be just soaking in the entire planet around you.

THE CONCLUSION
A lot of the stuff I have mentioned are probably very minor issues and might be something easy to fix. But maybe it’s me and I am very difficult to fix. I really liked this game but a lot of the other reviews are really blowing it way out of proportion. Yes I know it was made by the holy one man dev team but the one dev ticket does not grant you immunity from criticism. This game is flawed. Massively flawed. But I love indies and flaws come with the territory. I am also flawed. temet nosce

Ok, so many people have waited a loooong time for this. Myself only a few years or so. Was it worth the wait? First off, let me say this game wasn't quite what I was expecting it to be. I've spent more time playing the demo (essentially the first level of the full game) than most full games I own. And while the full game definitely is hinted at by the demo, it isn't simply 'more of the same' or 'same game with different environments' as I'd anticipated. For one thing, there are parts where it's pretty confusing (on first run-through at least). The demo is so well explained and signposted that I wasn't really expecting to have to work out new mechanics or to repeatedly get lost. Many of the environments are quite big and open. Although you always know where you should be going (thanks to big lit-up markers in the sky) there were several times when I had no idea how to proceed or what on Earth* was going on. There is a more emphasis on exploring and rather less on seeing how fast you can go (although you can obviously do this if you want to) or accomplishing anything other than leaving the current planet. * And other, much more obscure planetary systems. I'm not sure if the above is a positive or not. I suppose it depends on what you're looking for, and if you been influenced by the demo. For my part, I'm totally happy with the game as it; it was just a bit of a surprise. So here are some positives + Graphics and atmosphere are stellar. (Ha!) Definitely one of those games where the main driver to finishing a level is to see how stunning the next one is. + Sound (both music and SFX) are breathtaking. Which is slightly ironic because the only thing that annoyed me on the aural front was the short, repeated loop for 'strong wind' which just didn't work for me. I found it irritating after only a few seconds. Mixed bag things: ~ Story. I'm not sure if I like this aspect or not. It's certainly very well put together for what it is. It fits the game in a 'this is a sci-fi exploration game in unknown, mysterious parts of the universe' kind of way. Did I understand it on first play through? Absolutely not. Do I expect I'll understand it better after a few replays? Possibly. Does it really matter? No; I don't think so. It's yet another visual/audio embellishment out of many. While I may be left feeling that I've either missed something really clever and 'big' or possibly that it was all just a load of tosh, it certainly never gets in the way of playing the game. ~ Gameplay. The controls are exquisite, the speed is exhilarating, and the overall 'just moving about from place to place' is immensely satisfying. But is that enough to make it enjoyable as a game? I'm on the fence with this one. I personally very much like playing stuff like this. Almost the 'DIY school of gaming'. A lot of reviews mention things like 'an experience' and 'the journey' and so on. Perhaps my expectation was again skewed by the demo. This is a game very firmly about enjoying what's presented to you for its own sake; not because there are things you need to accomplish. (Apart from to see the what the next level looks like!) Negative things (look; it's supposed to be a critical review. The game definitely isn't perfect, so I'm sure I can find something.): - Camera sometimes goes a bit wonky. Sometimes this is possibly deliberate (e.g. when you are travelling so fast or high it doesn't really matter what you are looking at. Other times it's just annoying (e.g. when you are in a confined space). - It is pretty short. But then I spent about 4 hours on the first level (in the demo) so am utterly sure I'll get good millage from this overall. - It really needs a level select. So I don't always have to embarrass myself on that utterly weird asteroid level. (Or maybe by forcing me to play that again it'll eventually make some kind of sense?) - The price. The developer really should be charging more for this! Even after a short play through I felt like I'd stolen someones favourite balloon. Yes; I most certainly will be buying the soundtrack just to support the developer further. Overall, then, back to the original question. TLDR: Yes! Yes it definitely has been worth the wait. It is a draw-dropping ride through an almost exhausting array of brilliant creativity. My initial thought on first completing the game was akin to an amazed, dazed; "W.T.F. was that??!?!?!?!" Immediately followed by; "Right. Let's play it through again, then!"

Short but sweet. Beat it in about 5h. The only thing that would make it better is VR support.

Jay Weston, as a child, wanted to touch Jupiter. He dreamed of endless oceans of clouds and storms that raged eternal. In his mind, he soared with wings that knew no limit. He dove faster than any falcon, he swam farther than any shark. Mankind knows no material wings like those of Jay Weston's mind, no psi-steel or graviton-pulse drive; that didn't stop him from bringing his dream to reality. This may be the closest many of us will come in our lifetime to really feeling like we can *ride* the cosmos, to surf the dunes of an ancient world, to skip off cresting waves of forgotten seas just before blasting skyward like the best frisbee throw you've ever made. The one that hit the stratosphere and never came back. The one that made you feel you understood the word "Godspeed". I'm definitely going back in. Just for the ride. It's a short one, to be sure, but it will take your breath away. Don't stop dreaming.

So....do I recommend this game? It's fun, and I like the vagaries. It reminds me of the kind of "game" you'd play as a kid, putting your hand out the window and feeling the wind flow over and under it. It's enjoyable, and relaxing. But it is not worth $15. There simply isn't enough gameplay. If there were some kind of endless mode with randomly generated worlds, that would be something. But I finished the game in 3.5 hours, and there really isn't any reason to play again. even the remaining achievements are "go high on this world" or "go fast close to the ground on this world". Nothing else to find, or to see. There's not even any reason to "explore" the worlds that I could find. At any rate, I'm glad I played it, but wish it had been cheaper.

This game needs steam workshop. Custom levels would be really cool i bet.
