  I would love to recommend this game, but with how greedy Activision went about it and the terrible state it is in - I can not. As in - gameplay-wise, when the game works - it is fantastic! It's a remaster, in which Raven has put loads of effort and it shows... but judging from the history of the franchise - it's not them who ported this game to PC and this is where many problems lie. The first thing you'll likely stumble upon when launching the game is an error saying: "out of memory error. you are probably low on disk space. (12)" There is a workaround for it and involves downloading profile files from the internet and putting them in the game's directory. Simple enough. Still - not acceptable for AAA games released in 2016 (2017 if we are talking standalone purchase)! And apparently, this has been an issue since 2016 and Activision just ignored it (and kindly shut down their forums in 2020, so you have fewer places to contact them and make a fuss about issues not working and their lack of support). That's the first big issue. The second issue - there is a bunch of features in the game that should help improve performance and avoid stuttering - one being Precaching Shaders. Sadly, there are at least 2 (maybe more) missions in the main campaign, where having it turned on will make the game freeze on the loading screen - that's another wildly spread issue, that Activision has been ignoring since 2016. Not too bad? How about trying multiplayer? Well, here things are drastically different - here, shaders have to be precompiled, to even get to the main menu. Guess what - the game crashes (or sometimes freezes) around 16% in with a message: "Create2DTexture( h1_ui_icon_challenge_xp_badge, 256, 256, 0, 77) failed: 887a0005 = The GPU device instance has been suspended. Use GetDeviceRemovedReason to determine the appropriate action" This essentially leaves you with the version of the game where only single-player is playable (and that is only if you disable features that are there to help with performance). You could use "fan client", but with not so stellar history of the CODs fan clients, that is very much something you have to do at your own risk. Furthermore, even if you somehow got to the main menu of multiplayer and the multiplayer of the normal client wasn't dead - it's not a full package of the game. You see - the original Call of Duty 4 was released on PC in 2007. The game received multiple patches - in part due to the popularity of its multiplayer mode. Patch 1.6 was a bit special, as it added 4 new maps to the game - Creek, Chinatown, Broadcast and Killhouse - all of them reusing assets and parts of geometry from maps already existing in singleplayer. I mention this because this is a remaster and these are no longer present at the release. Now you have to buy DLC to play them. The price? $15! Cause we just can't have "complete" remasters with Activision. And because of all of these issues, even though I had plenty of fun experiencing the game's campaign this can not get my recommendation. FIX YOUR GAME, ACTIVISION.

  Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® Remastered (2016), not to be confused with Call of Duty® 4: Modern Warfare® (2007). Not to be confused with Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® (2019). Not to be confused with Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 2 Campaign Remastered (2020). Not to be confused with Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® II (2022). Not to be confused with Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 2 (2009). Also multiplayer is 70 gigs and it does not work. This is very normal.

  If you're using NVIDIA drivers, go to OPTIONS->GRAPHICS->ADVANCED VIDEO. Scroll down to SHADER PRELOAD and turn them all off. If you don't do this then mission 3 "The Bog" absolutely will not load. It's been 6 years Activision. Why is this not fixed yet?

  With XLabs being killed off by Activision, Plutonium and likely H1 next on the chopping block, there is no safe way to play this game or any other Classic CoD on PC anymore. Activision wants you to completely forget about their legacy and go play their newest game and buy tons of bundles. MWR is exposed to CVE-2018-20817, a massive security risk allowing hackers to execute Remote Code Executions and gain control of your PC to upload malicious files just by playing online and matching with them ingame, nearly exactly like it happens with Black Ops 2, 3 and every other Classic CoD from 2007 - 2018. While H1 is still around for now, it's likely going to be taken down not long after Plutonium goes. The game itself also suffers major issues outside of the vulnerability, including an issue where the game will not launch unless set to windowed in safe mode. Even if H1 somehow survives Activision's cease and desist onslaught, the multiplayer servers are almost always dead even with the client. I would have recommended buying this for SM², but of course that got C&D'd as well. If Activision won't consistently update these games, and won't let the community fix them, they need to be taken off the store. This and the rest of the Classic CoD Games are practically malware at this point with the lack of updates.

  TLDR: Don't buy or play online, you risk being ratted and having your PC controlled or info stolen from RCEs by doing so.

  Fun fact, this game actually is not affected by the vulnerability that a lot of reviews mention. It affects MW2/3, BO1/2, AW, and Ghosts. (nvd.nist.gov, CVE-2018-20817) It affects no COD game released after August, 11th, 2015. It still affects the aforementioned games.

  I get hating Activision because of how they have handled multiple things (Plutonium, newer CODs and Microtransactions, etc.) and allowed vulnerabilities to exist in their old games (which is shit practice, and the games that have the vulnerabilities should be removed from the Steam store OR have their multiplayer completely disabled). But let's not discourage people from enjoying some nostalgia because we have fearmongered vulnerabilities into games that don't have them (according to .gov websites). The achievements are all single player, so you don't need to go online to get them, if that's what you're playing for. I don't plan on playing any non-current COD multiplayers since MW2 multiplayer gave me a scare for my computer's vulnerability to hackers in P2P lobbies. If you are fine with just playing campaign, I would buy this on sale. (It goes on sale semi-frequently) Activision also doesn't lower prices of older CODs, so games that are extremely old sell at a price as if they are AAA games. The multiplayer was really fun from what I remember playing on Xbox One, but I don't really care to play it now and based on my experiences in PC COD multiplayer, I'm encouraged to stay away from it. 10/10 campaign from a 0/10 company. Edit: I also notice a lot of reviews are talking about issues on the campaign. Specifically for 'The Bog' and their video memory. For 'The Bog' disable the option 'Preload Shaders' for some reason the level doesn't load properly if the setting is turned on. For your video memory, that directly has to do with your hardware and your settings for the game (and potentially the optimization of this game, which isn't perfect by any means), turn your settings down. If the game still doesn't work, refund and wait to get a better machine to run this on. Again, Activision sucks. If you don't want to support them by purchasing the game (which might not be your way of thinking about it, cause I bought this for nostalgia and the achievements), don't. They allow 6 of their games to have multiplayers that can destroy your PC. They have a lot of issues unfixed in their games, like this one. And they don't care to fix any of it. They have had years, multiple years and they are a multi-million dollar (probably worth billions) game studio. And these games tend to not age well for hardware if the developers (which Activision doesn't care about their customer base, they care about their bottom line, patching/fixing COD4:MWR doesn't improve their bottom line) don't go and fix them/optimize them/remaster them/etc. Bethesda does this, many AAA game studios will do this. Activision is easily the worst offender. Edit 2: I 100% this in under 10 hours. Just a quick achievement hunter fact. It's also sad how many reviews are copy-pasted versions of the same top review when it's literally just fake news. Databases for vulnerabilities state this vulnerability (CVE 2018-20817) is not present in any COD game after 2015-08-11, which this game was released after. It's present in 6 games. Stop copy-pasting the same bogus reviews that are on every COD game because activision can't fix their old games.
