Doom franchise has been out and around for decades now and we fans have certainly seen some strange things happening to it, in a good way, of course. So, when I heard the news of the Mighty Doom finally making its way to the mobile gaming market, I wasn’t surprised. And after a few “much-needed” delays, the game is out for grabs, and apparently… Doom fans are having a blast with this new top-down shooter.
We have seen Doom getting transformed into all kinds of genres, from hardcore shooters to challenging RPGs. But now it’s time to bring the chaos back to the hellish world filled with fierce enemies and cute demons. But don’t let the cute looks fool you, because Mighty Doom is just as challenging and chaotic as its FPS counterpart. But is it worth playing? Let’s find out!
What Mighty Doom is all about
Mighty Doom is the latest and greatest spin-off of the iconic Doom title by Bethesda that puts you in the shoes of a cute little demon slayer who embarks on a wild adventure through a hellish yet gorgeous-looking world teeming with monsters and mystery. The game has you blasting through hordes of demons as you progress through different levels to find new weapons, items, and upgrades to make things a little easier.
But here’s the thing… there’s nothing “easy” about this game as Mighty Doom sets new standards of difficulty that even leave behind the original game. And part of the reason for this stiff difficulty is the free-to-play elements that push you to buy stuff that would help your journey. But other than, this top-down shooter has everything that you’d expect to see in a Doom spin-off - it’s gore-filled, fast-paced, action-packed, and thrilling, all at the same time.
Mighty Doom Gameplay
It’d be totally unfair to not dissect Mighty Doom to its bare bones and examine its gameplay under the scope. And well, as soon as you step into the game, you are hit with the feeling that you aren’t actually in control here. Why you might ask? Turns out, the game features auto-shooting options and all you can do is move your character around as you spray the battlefield with bullets and gore. However, you do have the ability to control special weapons, such as rocket launchers. That is if you get your hands on one.
But other than that, Mighty Doom is actually fun and addicting, even. Just like any other rogue-lite, it pushes you to keep fighting to earn new upgrades, weapons, and items that help you beat the level bosses. Speaking of which, there’s roughly a boss fight ensuing after every 10 stages of the level. And these bosses don’t mess around, they are pretty hard to beat, even for a rogue-lite pro, which I am certainly not. Once you get through 40 stages, you unlock a new world with new enemies to face.
The Unforgiving World of Mighty Doom
Mighty Doom might be a spin-off of the classic first-person shooter title, but it’s no “Doom”. In fact, Mighty Doom is a completely different game with a wholly new experience that feels much more challenging and sometimes, even impossible. The stages are bite-sized but as you progress through them, you feel the enemies getting stronger, pushing you to upgrade your equipment to beat them.
This is becoming the new normal for free-to-play games like Mighty Doom but I really think Bethseda should reconsider the difficulty level and bump it down a bit, unless, they are trying to make a few extra bucks. That brings us to the game’s in-app purchases and loot-box system where you can spend money to buy new upgrades for your character to defeat stronger enemies and level bosses.
One thing that I love about this top-down shooter is how it subtly includes cute mini versions of the the iconic Doom locations to add a touch of nostalgia to the mix. It makes Doom fans feel right at home as they spray through different levels and unleash their wrath on these demons.
How to play Mighty Doom on PC
Mighty Doom is fun to play on Android but it only gets you so far with its clunky touch controls. So to get the best possible gameplay experience in this ultra fast-paced shooter, you need to have swift control and that’s where Gameloop emulator comes in. You can play this game on PC using Gameloop Emulator to enhance your gaming experience and get an upper hand over your competitors on mobile.
All you have to do is download and install Gameloop emulator from the official site. Boot it up and search for Mighty Doom and install on your device. Now, all that’s left to do is boot up Mighty Doom from your desktop and get playing! The best part? You can map the keys on your keyboard according to your liking to get the most out of this game.
Is Mighty Doom Worth Your Time
Mighty Doom is still in its infancy and there are still many things that need to be explored and experienced. But overall, I definitely think it has the potential to become a great Roguelite, and Doom fans should definitely give it a go since it’s totally free. It offers an action-packed adventure with impactful and gore-filled gunplay that tests your mettle to its bits. But if you are not a fan of Doom or hate the aggravating monetization techniques, you might find Enter the Gungeon to be a good alternative.
That’s all for Mighty Doom today, I still have high hopes for the game to succeed with updates rolling out in the future. And when that happens, I will be back with yet another exciting review for you.
