Okay. So, this is a review straight from the heart. I have grown up my entire life amidst a family of alcoholics, as well as their children who have spent a lifetime struggling to make peace with their parents' all-encompassing disease. So, when I say Lydia is a game that hits close to home, I mean it. There were so many ways this game could have turned me off. If it soft-balled any of the unimaginable torments passed down from generation to generation of substance abusers, I would have balked at its half-assed attempts to address a serious problem. But, Lydia is a game that pulls no punches. It digs deep into the twisted dynamic of an alcoholic household and cuts deeper still in its exploration of the very root of the problem. Few games have so profoundly affected me as Lydia. And make no mistake, this is a narrative that can only be told through the interactive medium of video games. Players must guide Lydia through a maze of dysfunctional family members, suffering from a problem the child cannot begin to comprehend. In doing so, the game BRILLIANTLY casts the player as the benevolent care taker that Lydia so desperately needs in her heart-breakingly tumultuous life. It's a short game, yes. However, if you or anyone you know has had to live under the yolk of their parents' crippling dependency upon alcohol, the story of Lydia will stick with you LONG after the credits roll. This is a prime example of why games should be viewed as a new form of media, unique, yet no less impactful than movies, books, or graphic novels. Lydia is a story. Lydia is a survivor's tale. Lydia is a masterpiece. Lydia is art.

PSA: Don't play if you're in the middle of a depressive episode like me, the big, depressed idiot.

This review was written in English and Russian in purpose to save your money and time. «You pass by a little child, you pass by, spiteful, with ugly words, with wrathful heart; you may not have noticed the child, but he has seen you, and your image, unseemly and ignoble, may remain in his defenseless heart. You don't know it, but you may have sown an evil seed in him and it may grow, and all because you were not careful before the child, because you did not foster in yourself a careful, actively benevolent love» /Fyodor Dostoyevsky/ Lydia is a story-driven game about substance abuse from a perspective of a small child developed by a Finnish indie development team. A feeling of pure hopelessness surrounds this poor girl's story, and as she delves deeper into a surreal journey with her pink Teddy bear, players discover the increasing severity of her fractured world. It's a mournful experience, for sure, but it's also emotionally draining and incredibly dark so if you're looking for pure escapism don't play Lydia. “A beast can never be as cruel as a human being, so artistically, so picturesquely cruel.” /Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov/ Lydia is not a traditional adventure game that involves in-depth puzzle-solving or inventory management you'll only interact with whatever's available at the moment in every chapter which consists of no more than three side-scrolling screens. Instead of dialog trees you select Lydia’s emotional state but I think your choice doesn’t affect the story. The gameplay itself consists of clicking environmental objects and through dialogs which need to trigger some specific actions. There’s only one mini game in Lydia (very simple one) so getting stuck or stumped is impossible. The game skillfully shows different parts of Lydia’s life in several chapters. We see how she’s searching “a monster” from a child to an adult daughter of a manipulative alcoholic. The ending of the game is particularly poignant. «And the more I drink the more I feel it. That's why I drink too. I try to find sympathy and feeling in drink.... I drink so that I may suffer twice as much!» /Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment/ While the story remains strong there’re some problems. First, you can see some mistakes throughout the subtitles, ranging from simple grammatical issues to full-blown misspellings. Second, the use of foul language almost seems forced and out of place. «Love children especially, for they too are sinless like the angels; they live to soften and purify our hearts and, as it were, to guide us. Woe to the man who offends a small child» /Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov/ Having completed the game in less than two hours I have mixed feelings about Lydia. It did not feel like an adventure. It is rather a very short interactive story besides not very fun. Even if you would like the game you don’t enjoy it. I recommend the game only to those people who like a gameplay-lite adventures that deals with real-world problems particularly those of a darker nature like Lidia. I was impressed by this depressing story about wrecking a family because of alcohol addiction and emotional abuse but it’ so incredibly short so I do suggest you ought to wait a discount. «Grown-up people do not know that a child can give exceedingly good advice even in the most difficult case» /Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Idiot/ Love and care for your family.

i am impressed and touched by this short "game" because of many reasons, two of them are very personal - but i guess thats what "user reviews" are all about: to get as much subjective (!) opinions about something you're interested in as possible to help you decide if it is something for you or not... the personal reasons: i got a father myself quite recently (my little boy is almost 8 months old), so you have to understand that i judge (any) media regarding children now very differently (i guess, you know what i mean if you have children yourself). in my opinion lydia is a powerful reminder of how much influence and responsibility parents have and how important it is to be aware of that. the other personal reason is
that my parents are divorced too
, so i know a little bit about that. i love the small but great ideas in lydia, which distinguish the "game" from others of the same kind. i really enjoyed the mixture between humour, the overall pacing (the game is short, but the way how it unfolds is very well done imho) and the childish, naive tone in which the makers approach important, very serious and dark adult themes in a fresh way. bravo for that! i also love the artwork. the backgrounds are very atmospheric, the character design very creative and spot on and the animations are perfectly fitting for what lydia wants to be. dialogues made me smile, think, suffer and wonder, clicking anxious to reveal the next one, which is a lot of praise in times where aaa-production chats beween characters can't make me feel anything anymore. its a great mixture between exaggerated cliches, realistic lifelike extracts and dreamlike inbetweens. the sound and music was very well placed too and i really enjoyed that you did not have tutorial boxes and information about where to click and what to do anywhere - lydia forces you to find out - playfully, which is a good thing. the "game" plays with your expectations, keeps suprising and i am glad that i had the opportunity to "play" it. so, thank you platonic partnership, can't wait to see more from you guys in the future. for generations to come.

Phenomenal. Gorgeous artwork mixed with a haunting sound design bring together one of the most poignant, honest indies I'm proud to own. This is an achievement of storytelling. A macabre struggle of both the innocence of a young girl's imagination intertwined with the brutality of adult addiction and irresponsibility. As each chapter progresses with Lydia attempting to find a monster of her mind, the world becomes more twisted, but far more real. The very flesh of her imagination running wild slides off in a brilliant, bleak ending that caught me so off-guard moments after it peeled my comfort away with the monster's unmasking. This game made me uncomfortable. It made me cry. Most of all it made me feel an almost irrational, unhinged hatred mixed with an unending despair against realities I have never had to face, but know so many must have had to completely alone. This game is an excellent experiment that uses sorrow as a stage and plays a meaningful message that you should most certainly experience.

''Our Mothers tell us that there are no monsters under our beds, or hidden inside our closets but they don't warn us that sometimes Monsters come dressed as people that claim to love you more than the Sun loves the Moon'' - Nikita Gill Lydia sets the tone of this short awareness VN equally through its graphics & sound/voice effects as much as through its recounted story and is very effective at capturing the innocent childhood mystery of 'Monsters'. It is harshly direct in its dialogue making sure that the player is explicitly clear of the home life setting while visually making use of neutral greys, black & whites and deep reds for the psychological impact of this emotional journey of childhood to teen life then 'lets go of our hands' at the powerful 'Adult' finale. One aspect I admired the most was the subtle yet mood altering use of the 'voices' in the story, this clever trick will grind on you to the point you will naturally relate to Lydia's feelings while building a dislike towards the 'sighs' and other demeaning vocal sounds. The score guides this mood along and compliments the previously mentioned graphics palettes leaving you to be carried along like an awestruck bystander as you navigate the side scrolling events all controlled by a mouse click. There is another excellent use of multiple choices at certain scenes that allows the player to express their feelings by choosing the matching emotional word. This, again, is a clever use of player interaction by having the story match their personality to help reflect the experience more personally since a 'quiet' character type is going to see different text to a 'direct' character type. There are scenes that are graphically disturbing for those who are easily affected and it contains profanity/swearing so be aware for any players who are offended by this Lydia is the kind of gaming experience that will have you thinking on the subject long after the 1 hour - 90 minutes game-play has ended and is equally likely to have impact on anyone who has first hand experience of this. There are so many underlying effects that all stem from the main awareness theme of this story and Lydia manages to hit them all so easily it is clearly a result of personal accounts or experiences. (Which is mentioned in the game detail) Personally I enjoyed this short experience because of the techniques used to further player immersion and the subject matter is one that is all too common to see; this 'game' showcases the childhood impact on such a deep, psychological level without it being obvious and that is wonderful to see. ~~~ Liked what you see? I would start with a suggestion. Do not play this game while you are in a stance of depression or just having a bad day. Alcohol can ruin lives. Not just our life, but the life of our relatives and the life of our loved ones too. Lydia is a point&click art game which shows this problem from the eyes of a little girl. The game describes very well how broken can be a family because of the dependency of the parents. Lydia, as still a little girl, does not fully understand the problem, she just feels so, that she is haunted by an invisible monster. Growing up in a family like this can’t be easy, but always can be worse, especially if parents blame their own kid for their misfortune. Could Lydia ever forgive her parents? It is up to you to figure out. While the game is very short, around 1 hours long, it was worth it to experience this story. I paid 0,39€ for it during the sale, no regrets.
Conclusion
Story: 8/10 Heartbreaking, instructive story. Voice Acting: 1/10 There are no real voice acting in this game, the characters produce some annoying sound while speaking. It annoyed me a lot!!!!!!!! Replay value: 1/10 Short story rich game, it is ok only for one playthrough. Atmosphere: 5/10 Dark surreal world, emotional moments, but it was ruined by the voice the characters “produce” while they speak. Visuals: 7/10 Artistic surreal visuals, I really liked it. Game difficulty: 1/10 Game focusing on the story and not on challenging gameplay, so just sit back and enjoy it.
Hey, I am an achievement hunter!
Perfection time: About 1h. Only one achievement and that is awarded once the credits rolled at the end of the game. If you liked the review or you like to earn achievements, but in enjoyable, fun and entertaining games, then please follow my Average Achievement Hunter curator or just check out our curated games. This is a well-written, thought out interactive story. It's not quite a point & click adventure & not quite a VN. It's kind of in between both those genres. Simple interactions where you're mostly guiding the little girl around the fantasy or adult world full of monsters. This is a heart-breaking story. It's about family & alcohol. It's not for the feint of heart. This story hits hard. It's shows that games can be art. It took me one hour to complete. If you grew up in a tough household, you may want to pass on this one. Otherwise, I highly recommend this title. Rate 8.5/10. p.s. If the dev had shown his or her family photos at the end, it would have ripped me to pieces.
