Mighty Switch Force Hyper Drive Edition is one of my all time favourite games, and I had been very keen to try the sequel, which is included in this collection, though it’s not sold individually. The collection seems to run well, and there seems to be no particular add-ons or changes to the games besides being bundled together, so I’ll review each game individually. It should be noted that I think the collection as a whole is worth it if you have Mighty Switch Force Hyperdrive Edition, as you will get another 2 games packaged here (not including the very original). However if you have Academy, you will only be getting Mighty Switch Force 2. It should also be noted that Mighty Switch Force- Hose it Down is not included, which is an odd absence, but without further adu;
Mighty Switch Force:
Gameplay- The original incarnation; very fun, however it is essentially hyper drive, but less so. Hyper Drive IS after all, a remake of this game. Nice to have here, but also a little redundant as well. The gameplay is a simple platformer game, where you must make it through the level by using the gimmick, a “switch” to turn one lot of platforms on, and the other off. This creates a certain rhythm to beating each level as you hit your switch between jumps to create your platforms or remove obstacles. There are enemies that you can shoot, and some changes to the core gimmick on some levels, but it remains through out. As a simple platformer, this game is very basic and could even be called bad. However, it’s once you beat the level that the actual fun starts; the speedrunning. In a way, this game is a lot like what Sonic’s original games were always intended to be; perfecting the level and running through it as quickly as possible. This game encourages it by giving you a “par” time and giving you a large star after beating said time. There is a huge amount of satisfaction from perfecting the muscle memory of each level and truly beating the level, rather than just passing through it. This series of games is one of the few I can think of where getting all the achievements and 100% the game is truly part of game’s experience (the only other off the top of my head is the Spelunky Series). Presentation- The presentation of this game is lovely as well. The pixel graphics are top notch while the character and art design are really fantastic; Patricia Wagon and the Escaped Criminals are among my favourite game characters in terms of visuals. As for the music, it’s generally great… I’ve nothing more to add to that. Plot- Story wise, this game is lacking, and only gives enough of a “plot” as to give the character a reason to do anything. You’re a police officer and some criminals have escaped… also monsters. There’s also an alien or Mother Monster Boss at one point, but if you were looking for a deep plot, or even a shallow one, it ain’t here. That’s fine, this is a game that focuses purely on its gameplay. Criticism- There is a little guess work unfortunately with tight jumps, there is an annoying lag between each “switch”, and a couple levels have small elements that feel poorly thought out (launching an enemy off camera and having to guess work where he is when switching). Though everything still feels good enough that the problems are minimal, and the levels are great enough that that the few small problems are almost all forgotten about. What would be nice though is if there was a full view of the level or map option, so that there wouldn’t have to be so much guess work on where you are going, or that the camera button could travel freely. Overall a very enjoyable experience.
Mighty Switch Force 2:
Gameplay- More or less exactly the same as MSF1, but with one change to the gameplay; your pistol is now a watergun. This allows for certain hazards and interactions that change up the gameplay ever so slightly. So it’s just more MSF, but in sequel form. Presentation- Remains fantastic, in fact it appears to be better than MSF1, with just a tad more detail, and more animated characters. Music remains good, they even have an 80’s styled disco rock credits song… yes… Plot- The criminal sisters have retired from crime, and you’ve retired from fighting crime. You’re now a fire fighter, who’s trying to save the reformed sisters whilst fighting those flames… and also monsters.
Oh yeah, and Patricia Wagon is a robot now, what a twist!
Criticism- There has been no change in controls or presentation, however the levels feel a bit smoother and simpler than MSF1, whilst offering more of a challenge. However there are also slightly less levels than in MSF1 as well. Also some of the end of level card art seems a bit wonky? It’s a bit odd to me that they never released a Hyper Drive (Hyper Soaker maybe?) version of this. It seems like it would have required less work than the first remake (reusing many assets) and people were very hungry for it for a long time. Ah well, here it is on PC finally.
Mighty Switch Force-Hyper Drive Edition:
A remake of the first with new visuals and some tweaks, So I won't go in-depth. Better overall and the best of the bunch.
Mighty Switch Force Academy:
Gameplay- This is the biggest switch (haha) up in the series, as the camera is now further out showing the entirety of the map. There is also now a gameplay element where you run off the bottom or side of the stage and appear on the other end. There’s also now multiplayer and VS mode. I’m afraid I can’t comment on this at all, but it’s likely fun. That said, MSF is not a game I would have thought to make a multiplayer mode for. Presentation- Gone back to the pixel art and the backgrounds have this neon “computer-ish” style; looks good, though it gets a little stale compared to the previous games. There’s music too… Plot- It’s Patricia Wagon’s Prequel! An origin story if you will. The start of her career as she joins the police academy, but oh no! The Training VR machine has gone hay-wire and now Patrica is trapped within the virtual reality… So catch those Hooligan sisters for some reason… and also monsters. Criticism- While I actually really like seeing the entire stage, I had wanted something akin a map view function, it makes the tighter jumps far more difficult. Also the side to side teleportation is used poorly quite a few times, and there’s a particular part in map 20 that I’d say is just poor design outright. Speaking of level 20, the Boss is not particularly good, as it appears you almost HAVE to take damage to beat the boss. It also seems as though wayforward knew the boss was a bit scuffed, as each time you die to the boss, your time resets. Also despite the fact this game has 20 new levels and even has 5 levels from the first game (really milking the first game guys!), it feels really lean compared to the others. My BIGGEST criticism for this game, as well as the collection as a whole, is the fact that these games are designed to be 100%-ed, they’re an achievement hunting game, and Academy has half the achievements hidden behind the MULTIPLAYER! Don’t do this for such games! I’ll now likely never 100% this collection now, as I don’t think I’m going to invite the boys over to help me get achievements in MSF.
Conclusion
This series has to be one of my favourites. There’s something about its tone, art, characters, music… the combination of it all that just really rubs me the right way. Speaking of rubs, these games are very… Cheesecakey (alternative “gym” costumes, getting a skimpier intro screen after 100%). If you’re the prudish type it’s best to stay away, though it is all very tame. Otherwise, if this review or gameplay vids, or images, or any of the games tempt you, I highly recommend this series, it’s quick and speedy, but also very endearing, romp.

    Decent game collection and the best way to get the Mighty Switch Force games on Steam, since Wayford to this day have yet to release Mighty Switch Force 2 on Steam. There's quite a few issues in this collection that would put me off buying it unless it was on a severe discount though. The first one is the fact this collection quite literally has two copies of the exact same game, Mighty Switch Force! and Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition. It makes sense they made these two games originally as the Hyper Drive Edition "upgraded" the visuals to hd animated art as opposed to the original pixel art, as well as adding some new levels. In this collection though this effectively makes owning the original game pointless because the levels are the exact same as the Hyper Drive Edition. The sting also feels worse because in my opinion the original pixel art looks beautiful compared to more cheap looking cartoon look of the Hyper Drive Edition. This collection also includes Mighty Switch Force! Academy, which feels like the weakest game to me because it feels more like a add on than an actual game. The game isn't awful in itself but it has that cheap aspect to it as the camera perspective is zoomed all the way out and your character goes from the left side of the screen to the right side and the bottom to the top like an 80's arcade game. The game isn't terrible but it would be like playing a new era 2d sidescrolling Mario game for the third time in a row, there's a feeling of fatigue playing it and it doesn't help it someone could produce some of the levels in 20 minutes. Even the best game in the collection, Mighty Switch Force Hyper Drive Edition has some weird speed running counter incentives. After beatings the boss after level 16, you get a power cannon that makes some levels significantly easy to speed run to the point where you half the time of the recommended 2 or 3 minute time. I was actually surprised how many people worked on this game, because it feels like a major incentive of the game is gone because of that and this issue wasn't fixed in the Hyper Drive edition. Also this port also has some production issues with the images chosen for the button prompts on the menu ui. This was originally a 3ds wii u game so I'm guessing it was only 1 or 2 people working on the port and the buttons doesn't suit the stylisation of the game at all, making majority of the menus look a bit tacky. All this compiled I would say that this collection is worth getting, but it's only worth playing two of the games in the collection, Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition and Mighty Switch Force! 2. I would wait discount spending 5 to 10 dollars depending on how much you want to play these games because even the original games have some weak segments, usually to do with trial and error based levels.

    I found out that this game existed through listening to the soundtrack on YouTube. I had no idea it was on Steam until a couple days ago and it's very fun! I didn't expect to enjoy beating the par times on all the levels as much as I did, none of them felt tedious and the gameplay stayed fun. Great music, great art, just great everything. Definitely would recommend :)
