About the Game

Welcome to your own Game Dev Studio!

How will you run your own offices and ascend to greatness in the gaming industry?

Non-linear progression. Fill the empty spaces in your office with any objects you wish, and when you run out of space, buy a new building to continue expanding!

Find the best employees for your studio. Employees have their skills, attributes, traits, interests, and knowledge on topics.

Create multiple teams, work on multiple game projects at once, or reach for the stars by focusing all your workpower on one game.

Just don't forget that you won't get to keep your employees forever.

Rev up those engines. Make game engines, update them with new tech, and revamp them when the code gets too messy!

Make awesome games. Employees? Check. Game engine? Check. Now it's time to make great games!

Hype it up! Advertise your games through a multitude of ways: invite reviewers for an interview, start a mass advertisement campaign, contact online personalities to create early playthrough videos of your game, hire agencies to shill your game online, and even bribe reviewers!

Show your rivals who's boss of this industry. Your rivals are on the lookout for talented developers just like you are, so get ready to fight off their attempts to lure your employees away with higher salaries. Give them a taste of their own medicine and buy them out when they go under!

Sway the odds of platform manufacturers. Games you release influence the fate of platform manufacturers for which they're made.

Good games will make a platform more attractive to gamers and change its market share for the better.

Never a dull moment. Story mode, four extra campaigns, a freeplay mode, and the ability to randomize various aspects of the game at the beginning of a playthrough make for greater replayability.

Full modding support via Steam Workshop. Every little bit about the game can be changed with mods, even turned into something else entirely if the modder's skill and patience allows them.

I don't mind games that don't hold your hand, such as Paradox. In fact, I absolutely adore them. But if I can sit down for two hours with a spreadsheet and can't find ANY correlation between skill values, points needed to complete a game, and points needed/accumulated for the final product it's a bad game. I can't find any ANY math that makes skills translate to the game development and a successful product. I also reloaded the same scenario three times. I replicated each scenario, I mean completely identical situations each and every time and the requirements and output were different. Every. Single. Time. There is no consistency nor correlation with what development requires and your player's skill level. NONE. The main mechanic to the game is incoherent, inconsistent, and overall garbage. It's ridiculous that I can take the EXACT SAME steps every time I start the game or reload a save and recreate the exact same game -WITHOUT CHANGING A SINGLE THING- and get reviews that are as low as 4 to as high as 8. ABSOLUTE GARBAGE.

Pretty fun game. It provides deeper story than Game Dev Tycoon with equally fun gameplay. Cons: the 'building' mode can be inflexible and difficult to use. Looking forward for future updates and additions!

So, about those mods... No, don't buy GDS for the mods. It's been three months and there's still nothing notable. The most interesting mods are still the absurdly edgy example mods that the developer put out. This is about the third time I've written this review, and for good reason: the developer, who is really awesome and dedicated to their project, keeps on adding stuff. While the original release of this game could have had a little more content, the frequent updates put out by him has not only fixed this, but has impressively improved upon some of the games faults at launch. While some people will buy games on instinct if they know just how dedicated the devs are to community feedback, I know not everybody will. So, why is Game Dev Studio worth 10 bucks? Game Dev Studio is a game that could easily be compared to something like Mad Games Tycoon or Game Dev Tycoon. While it does lean on being somewhat similar to the former, Game Dev Studio has it's own identity. Game Dev Studio has to be my favorite development tycoon game I've played yet, and for good reason. This game embodies everything a good, somewhat realistic, tycoon game is without emerging it's players in hours of tutorials. It manages to be both complex and fun at the same time. Other than arguably being more strategic than it's more casual peers, Game Dev Studio has a bit of a different portrayal of how games are made. Game Dev Tycoon makes it look easy, and isn't exactly what I would call realistic (having to build new engines for different methods of storytelling and dialog is absurd). Mad Games Tycoon is realistic, but focuses on being more involved with the business of development. Game Dev Studio is like that, but it nails down the independant side of game development more than it does the professional side. Making games in this isn't hard, but it takes time and, more importantly, money. Games, good or bad, will flop without proper marketing and support. It's really easy to make the perfect game only to go bankrupt because people aren't buying what you've made. Game Dev Studio takes more patience to stick with than any other game, and that it can pull that off without being too frustrating is astounding to me. So, yeah. If you want a more casual experience that you can easily play with your brain turned off, maybe wait for a sale because that isn't what this is. If you, on the other hand, want a fun, strategic experience that will have you constantly failing and succeeding the face of all odds... get it! This game isn't perfect, but it's great and with the amazing support from the developer, I believe it will only get better. Rating: ☐ Steam REALLY, REALLY needs quality control ☐ Steam really needs quality control ☐ Bad in general ☐ Mediocre ☐ Average ☐ Above Average ☑ Competent ☐ Knacksterpiece this was previously rated Above Average. Due to the dev's amazing work, I had to change it to Competent.

There's a lot of reason to like this game. It's got some really fresh ideas. The price is fantastic, but this was released too early. It very much feels like an Early Access game still. There are bugs galore, and it doesn't feel like it's been given decent playtesting. A few issues: * Building is fiddly, so fiddly. * Nothing is explained. * Lacks some pretty obvious features like Loans. * UI is horrible. The graphics are pretty, but the UI has had zero love. I have a strong feeling it was designed by an artist rather than a designer. This game has so much potential, but I wish they cooked it for a bit longer. Keep your eye on it and definitely consider buying it.

Disclaimer (length) I am writing a review to such a thorough extent due to my passion in tycoon and managment games. Any game developers exhibiting effort and innovation in this area deserve feedback for their product. The developer is showing a lot of love to the game surprisingly and is keeping up with bugs and crashes reported. This game has displayed a pioneering design and depth to game development games with its focus on designing a complete experience of the world of game developing as opposed to the raw game developing structure of all other game dev games. The game lacks in areas that are of minute importance (partly) and can easily be fixed with tweaks, adjustments and additions to content. I will go on to describe the pros followed by the cons of the game: (Scroll all the way down for verdict) Pros Game depth This is the most innovative part of the game. The developer/s has done a great job of including as many aspects of the gaming development world as he can with features ranging from group activities to an array of individual game development skills and traits exhibited uniquely by staff. Liveliness The game has managed to create an interactive atmosphere both in the immediate scope of the player (in the player's game developing studio) and the world in which the player interacts. Let me explain Staff will chat around about different events going on in the game world and even the games they create and release. The fact that most of the information they talk about is accurate and in some cases enlightening (in that they might talk about the features of a new engine which came out recently and other stuff) creates life to the game. Every employee seems to be alive and be able to articulate their own thoughts. Something which has not been seen in other games. The game has also done a good job involving the gaming world by creating rivalries between gaming studios and adding a plethora of events which take place around the world. From gaming expos to platform and technology releases; most possible events that take place are there. Modes Game modes is a feature new and unique to the game dev genre in this game. while new and uncertain, it does add a lot of potential and from the top of anyone's head one can imagine the possible scenarios that can be rendered and simulated. The reason why it's in the pros is because it has potential as opposed to the quality of the modes currently in place. Options The game does a decentjob of making the player feel like they can chose to do anything they please. Almost every component of the game has options associated to it that the player can change in some form and the game developing process is a grand example of this feature. You'll find that when a game is being developed there are about 10 decisions you can make associated to the game. In some areas however, the contrary is evident but those options are more related to objects and materials. Cons Overdiversification (The root of all good and evil) While the developer/s were able to create this game and encompass a great scope of the game developing world. It feels like it has created issues in places that needed a larger focus and especially the most important aspect which is game development (which I will mention later). Game development Easily the most important aspect of the game has had both a positive influence and a negative. You'll find that they've innovated the game developing process by staff interests; Contributing staff can boost an aspect of the game by giving input from their interest (a staff member may have an interest in martial arts which will boost the combat aspect if you include it.). While this may be a great addition to the game developing process, the dev/s have overpowered it; if you do not have a staff member boosting an aspect then the game will perform worse. Seems legit so far. However, if you do not include an aspect of the game which is not boosted by employees at all, then the game will also perform better. In fact, in most cases if you manage to only include boosted aspects in a game then it will likely recieve 100% for that section. Leading to the following problem. A game can lack in aspects directly related to the theme-genre and still get 100%. You can create a game about World War 2 and if you don't include guns, it's okay as long as every aspect which can be boosted is boosted. You'll likely get 100% if obviously you're including all other features on the engine. This makes for an easily exploitable system and at heart, it chips away at my interest slowly, game after game. Objects The only good thing coming out of the placeable objects in the game really are tiles, it's nice to be able to change the floor for once in a game dev game. However.... inhale There is a miniscule amount of objects in the game, lack of diversity and progression to unlock new items really makes this area of the game dull. Employees do not care about the environment in which they work in either and thus all you really need is a bit of food, water, a toilet and you're good to go. This however isn't a very important aspect of the game, it just kind of exists. It would be nice to see performance enhancing environments such as in other games or employees desiring a minimal standard for the environment. Tutorial I think the developers had the wrong idea of tutorial when they created story mode. Most of the revies I've seen say there is no tutorial. Well there is, but it's called story mode. I believe a tutorial should be created to guide the player through all the aspects of the game without caring about money. Give him 2 mil and explain literally everything without pressure. In story mode (tutorial mode), you have been hired by an investor to make games. He walks you through the basics and then says "ok now I want a game in 2 years or you're done"... and you really are done if you dont satisfy, if you take your time you're done. Not a very friendly new player environment. In my opinion story mode is a good addition to the game. It would be nice to create some sort of personal achievement scheme where the next goal is to create a game which sells "x" amount with no time limit while increasing the challenge as the player moves to next levels etc. That would be very interesting. Tutorials should have NO CHALLENGE to the player, they should be simple and complete going from square one to a complete knowledge of the game while guiding the player. I would love to see this implemented and trust me, so would the rest of the community. Overall The game has made undoubted innovation and pioneering into the game development theme and deserves credit for it. There was a lot of effort shown through it and as I mentioned earlier, most of the cons are minute issues which can be easily remedied. Some of these issues are however very important and need fixing asap. Remember this is a game developing game and that aspect should shine above all else. A great effort nonetheless and I'm hopeful the dev/s maintain this momentum and continue to care for this game. The game is worth the $10 it asks for The Verdict as of 14/3/18 for this game is 8/10

a little buggy but gets bugfixes daily since release clearly better than game dev tycoon, you get a lot more freedom and options and you get them earlier however it requires you to invest more time into it to learn (because theres more to the game than just matching 3 sliders) and expect to fail your first few runs

While this game has some good ideas and very strong depth, the mechanics of how the different specialists and their skills translate into actual progress on the game are shrouded in mystery. There are four tutorials in the game, but none of them do anything to really explain what to focus on, how to train, what you did right, what you did wrong, how the points you spend on development actually come out at the end of the finished product, how to hire for your studio to keep things fresh, and it all makes for a very frustrating experience. It's difficult to know if a game you're working on will be any good until you've spent all the time and money to make it. It's a shame because there's a really good game somewhere in here, but I've not been able to find it. EDIT: I want to say a sincere thank you to the developer for responding to my review. It's obvious that you truly care about making the experience better for your users, and that's highly commendable. I did try playing it again, but my concerns remain unaddressed. I still have no understanding as to how employees, their skills and attributes, and the points invested in development translate to the finished projects, and the tutorials still do not explain this. I appreciate you reaching out, but I still do not feel any different about the game.

This game's flow of logic makes no sense. Every couple of weeks your employees will want to do some random crap (hey boss, let's skydive/go-kart/lift weights/shoot guns), and it gets really over done, but that's tolerable, here's what isn't; the logic. You release your new game, here is the review The graphics were the best I have seen [...] the gameplay was amazing [...] the world design was great [...] unfortanetly this game had nothing good about it, shame on the devs Literally every review went like that, Everything about it is amazing 2/10. So here's my review Graphics were sub-bar [...] music was standard [...] gameplay was terrible [...] world desing was nothing special [...] 4/10
