About the Game

Battle Cry of Freedom brings brutal real-time first and third-person multiplayer combat set in the 19th Century America, presenting players with the opportunity to re-fight the American Civil War as either the Union or the Confederacy.

Incorporating a wide range of weaponry, from long range rifled muskets and devastating artillery, to various deadly close combat tools such as bayonets, knives and sabres, players will take up the fight for the North or the South trying to win the day on the bloody battlefields of America.

Commander Battles

Take control over a company of AI-controlled soldiers and lead your men to glory! Fight in huge battles with up to 800 Bots per Server, with Cavalry, Infantry and Artillery. Commander Battles are the ultimate gamemode to display your tactical cunning.

Fight in Massive Multiplayer Battles

Take part in massive multiplayer battles with up to 600 players simultaneously fighting each other on the same battlefield, in a completely destructible and realistic Civil War combat environment.

Multiple Army Branches

Enlist in the Infantry

Fall in line as a regular infantryman, join the ranks of an elite sharpshooter regiment, or help relay orders as a musician as you get to explore the various roles in the army and trial your favorite units.

Serve in the Artillery

Support your team from the rear and shatter enemy resistance as a gunner. Join the Heavy Artillery and use the 100pdr Parrott Rifle to lob shells over enemy fortifications with devastating effectiveness.

Join the Cavalry

Join the Cavalry and charge into the fray, bolstering the infantry with swift and efficient maneuvers across the battlefield. While wielding deadly repeating rifles, vanquish any foe that dares to stand in your path.

Muster as a Specialist

Enlist in the Engineer Corps and support your team by constructing defenses, building pontoon bridges and supplying ammunition. Or help stitch up wounds of badly wounded teammates by becoming a Surgeon.

Large Weapon Selection

Find your own playstyle! Smoothbores, Rifles, Pistols, Swords, Axes… With more than 120 unique weapons, 70 different types of ammunition and 20 different Artillery pieces, players have plenty of options to choose from.

Charge - Bayonet!

Fix your Bayonet and call the charge. Defeat your enemies using the directional melee combat system inspired by games such as Mount&Blade: Warband, that is easy to learn but hard to master.

Realistic Projectile Physics

Battle Cry of Freedom realistically simulates real life bullet physics by modelling not only velocity and twist rate, but also takes into account factors such as humidity, temperature, air density, local gravity, wind direction and wind strength.

Advanced Artillery System

Each of the 24 Artillery Pieces will perform differently and each gun has its up- and downsides. Artillery can be loaded with a wide range of different ammunition. Percussion-fused shells, time-fused shells, solid shot, bolts, canister and case shot can all be loaded, and work as expected.

Trains, Steamboats and more

Operate armored trains, steamboats, and wooden launches, providing new ways to traverse the battlefield.

Ride horses into combat

Mount your trusty steed and ride into combat. Defeat your enemies with deadly accuracy from one of your repeating rifles or slay them with your heavy cavalry sabre! Tow artillery across the battlefield for greater mobility.

Destructible Environments

Destroy bridges, fell trees, punch holes in walls, blow up fences; in Battle Cry of Freedom, almost everything is destructible. But don’t stand under a falling tree...

Construct, Destroy, Resupply

Play as an Engineer and construct various different defences, such as chevaux de frise or sandbag walls. Place forward spawn points and help your team by supplying them with ammunition and weapons. Lead the charge and blow holes into the enemies fort with gunpowder kegs or destroy their defenses with your powerful felling axe.

Fully Customizable Uniforms

Customize your character's uniform down to the color of the socks he is wearing! Pick from thousands of historically accurate uniform and equipment pieces, choose from different shoes, coats, hats and more. Even how you want to wear your coat is completely up to you. Wear it open, closed, under or over the leatherworks…

Present - Arms!

All animations in Battle Cry of Freedom are based on real world Historical Drill Manuals, such as Casey's Infantry Tactics or Hardee's Revised. In addition to the “regular” animations all being historically accurate, the game features a large selection of “role-play” animations, such as Parade - Rest, Present - Arms, Support - Arms, Trail - Arms and more.

Historical accuracy

All the gameplay is historically inspired, with changes only made when it creates a more engaging and exhilarating gameplay experience. I followed a man named Abraham Lincoln, who was dressed in a black suit and matching tophat, into battle. The battle line broke before Abe did. God bless America.

Don't give the game bad reviews because of it's low player base. Don't be stupid, tell your friends to buy it if you want to play with someone. This game's best mode is commander battle anyway, you don't need many people for playing that. There will be big update soon and the game has one of the best user friendly map editor. I'm not very satisfied with the melee, but that might be mainly engine's fault. Don't know if developers can do much about it. However, it was their decision, so they also take the responsibility for the outcome anyway. 8/10

I have been a Civil War reenactor for the past 27 years. No CW game has come the closest to replicating the feeling of being a reenactor as BCoF. The battle scenarios are great for small and large scale encounters. The best CW games for me have always been tactical ones (the Talonsoft "Battleground" series in the 90's, Sid Meier's Gettysburg, and the Ultimate General games). I never thought anyone could make a good 1st person shooter CW game. I was wrong.

    Historical Accuracy

If you want to know what it's like to skirmish/small battle with the enemy, try one of the conquest battles. I was a company commander for 17 years and the commander conquest battles are a near perfect replica of that experience. There are many other parts of the reenacting experience that Flying Squirrel gets right. You can spend hours kitting out different units in extremely accurate uniforms/equipment. The Western Confederate uniforms need to be added, but the mid-war ANV stuff is great. The US stuff is great, with a few missing options, but it's solid as well. If you're familiar with original CW uniforms and equipment, as I am, you'll appreciate the intricate detail that's in this part of the game. (You'll feel like you're flipping through your old copy of "Echoes of Glory".)

    Music

The music straight up slaps. Right now, for the proper CW vibe, you want to leave the music on the "Folk" channel. I hope they add more songs in the future, but even if they don't you won't be disappointed with the music. Although, they may owe the 2nd South Carolina String Band royalties as their stuff is about 90% of what gets played.

    Support Classes

The support classes, medic, musician, and pioneer, are coming along nicely. The only beef I have with them is that some of the field fortifications, while useful, look a little hokey from the pioneer. You might see a gabion sitting sideways on top of a single sand bag, for example. But, all classes are effective and fun to have around, particularly in larger battles.

But, is it a fun video game?

If you don't care about any of this historical stuff, and you're just into video games, here you go: It's an improvement on Warband. The melee is still janky, but I learned to use it, and I suck at melee in Warband, so there's that. Also, rifled muskets instead of smoothbore muskets mean you are going to hit what you're aiming at more often.

    Final Recommendation

Look, I never buy games that are in early access, but my son (also a CW reenactor) convinced me to get this one, and I have been completely satisfied. I look forward to whatever improvements are coming, but the game right now is in excellent shape. If you like the CW, or Warband, buy this game.

    >Convinced everyone near me we needed to charge >they listen >we leave cover and charge the enemy >proceed to get gunned down not even 5 feet from where we started 10/10 would lead men to their death again

Dead game. Devs wasted their time making napoleonic and space mods rather than working on the actual game I bought. Servers are dead 99% of the time.

It's a great game, but there is only multiplayer and unless you join a regiment, you will only be able to join less than a handful of populated servers, which are dead unless you show up at precisely the right time, that combined with my personal experience of not being able to have a little bit of fun without some tryhard admin muting you or banning your friends to satisfy their ego makes this a no. Save your money.

I believe this is the first review I've ever bothered to write. I don't want space, WW1, or Napoleonic battles. I bought a game about the civil war, and would prefer to play just that. It would be nice to see more improvements of the base game and less weird game modes. A single player skirmish, similar to M&B, would also be appreciated.

outside of regiment events the game is pretty much dead now. game was fun but if you're like me and don't particularly enjoy regiments i wouldn't bother getting this
  • gamedeal user

the population is so low it can't fill a lobby on a Friday night. the weapons are somehow less satisfying to use then the ones in Napoleonic (i am told this is for "balance") rifles that in reality can hit 12 inch targets at 500 yards can't hit a human sized target at 50. Infantry that historically carried 40-100 rounds of ammunition are locked to a max of 20. in short. an empty game that fails to be ether fun or historically accurate.
