Oh man. Where to even begin with this one. It would be an extreme disservice to simply call Arma 3 a shooter, as it is so, so much more than that. Arma 3 is a military simulator. This is a distinction that it’s developers hold sacred and are proud of, and one to which I can attest is completely accurate and deserved. But it’s even more than that. Arma 3 is a gaming platform, upon which so much has already been and will continue to be built for years to come. At its core though, Arma 3 in a supremely excellent military sim. The graphics are stunning, the gameplay is excellent, the mechanics are solid, and Bohemia Interactive has done an absolutely amazing job packaging this all together. New comers to the Arma series (as I was) may initially be overwhelmed by the game’s complex mechanics and decidedly different pace from your typical FPS/shooter. Enemy engagements happen at much greater distance than is typical in the genre and are often brief, brutal, and more times than not will conclude with your demise. There is no handholding here. No mini-maps, no enemy UI icons/indicators, no hit markers, no health bars. If you get shot a couple of times, you will find yourself unceremoniously dispatched. While this creates a high barrier for entry and a steep learning curve for new players, it provides a unique and distinctive play style. Situational awareness, cover, teamwork, suppressive fire, and generally moving purposefully and as if your ass depended on knowing what was behind the next ridge or hiding in the bushes are paramount to your success. Add to these infantry mechanics the amazingly rendered vehicles, armor, helicopters, and planes, each with their own realistic mechanics to learn and master, and you end up with a truly amazing military simulation experience. Out of the box, Arma comes with a great single player campaign comprised of 3 separate acts, each containing ~12-15 missions. The campaign focuses on a well crafted story of a military conflict that has erupted over Arma 3’s two HUGE islands of Stratis and Altis. You play the part of a NATO soldier who finds himself stuck in the middle of a complex engagement. The campaign is rewarding, and challenging. (I have yet to complete it as I’m stuck on one mission that I simply can’t seem to complete.) However the single-player campaign is FAR from the end of this title. The mission editing tools have allowed this amazing community to develop some absolutely awesome single player missions, all of which can be downloaded free of charge from the Steam workshop and numerous other sites around the interwebs. I would also recommend you check out the supremely excellent full game conversion single player mods Whole Lotta Altis and Dynamic Universal War System which will provide countless additional single player hours and could be completely stand alone titles in themselves. Oh and the multiplayer, oh god the multiplayer. Wasteland, King of the Hill, Invade and Annex, Battle Royale, Breaking Point, so many Co-Op opportunities, the amazing looking upcoming Epoch (currently in closed Alpha). I’m sure there are so many others that I haven’t even discovered yet. Each of these represent COMPLETELY USER GENERATED and totally disparate ways to play Multiplayer within the Arma 3 platform. By purchasing Arma 3, you immediately have access to each of these completely gratis and each could essentially be considered totally separate game. In wrapping up this lengthy review, Arma 3 is an amazing experience and a true accomplishment in game development. It is the only game in recent memory that I can say with confidence that I never get bored with playing. Bohemia Interactive has made it clear that they plan to support this game for years to come, and they have built something amazing on which the possibilities are truly endless. Purchase this game. Purchase it now. Thank me later. (IF YOU DO NOT FIND MY REVIEW HELPFUL, please leave a comment as to why. I welcome the constructive feedback.)

Immersive & trying // Recommended for those that cherish depth & complexity

*I recommend this particularly for its multiplayer.

+ Extremely mod friendly; enjoys full support from the Steam Workshop + Visuals & environmental design, save for a few issues here and there (i.e. empty buildings), has largely aged well & looks fantastic + Employs a deeply challenging level of realism + Multiplayer is still very active; boasts a wonderful variety of gameplay & modded servers to choose from + Long, content-packed single player campaign; player choices do affect potential endings, as there are several + Time control is back from Arma 2; player can speed up the passage of time, which helps SIGNIFICANTLY to combat the monotony of walking/running very long distances between objectives + Enormous map/playable area + User-created scenarios & a very easy-to-use scenario creator + Boasts incredibly varied gameplay mechanics; from piloting/driving myriad vehicles & gunships, to underwater missions, & everything in-between + Map & squad mechanics are back; while they may feel clunky to use in a combat scenario, a little practice goes a long way & serves to open up a slew of options on the battlefield - Sound design is very hit & miss; some weapons sound identical to others, & vehicle sound effects tend to sound strangely muted - Dialogue is also hit & miss; while I found the voice-acting to be done largely well, some of the dialogue is a bit awful - Soundtrack often felt cheesy or inappropriate - Mission pacing often feels very uneven; I felt that it often leaned too far into the realm of the tedious in the interest of realism (shouldn't be a bad thing in theory, but for the pruposes of a video game, it can put players to sleep in some missions) - The initial learning curve is considerable, & the tutorial felt inadequate overall; mechanics are amazing on paper, but take an inordinate amount of time to master

This is not a game for people who want fast action movie style gaming, this is a game for people who appreciate the finer things. Having done both military service and picked up MILSIM airsoft as a hobby this game is the closest you will get to what goes on in reality. There are experiences you will have in ARMA 3 that can not be had in COD or BF, experiences that will have you shaking from the adrenaline release. One that comes to mind was a mission to destroy an enemy comms tower, I was squad leader of 8 or so AI:s. As we approached the Comms tower and I told my men to go stealth, no firing unless fired upon. We moved slowly taking advantage of terrain, keeping an watchful eye for enemy patrols. Once the tower was in visual range pace slowed even more and I spent the better part of 30 minutes just looking for enemy patrols and advancing to about 200 meters from the tower. There I positioned my men to cover a wide firing arc as I had spotted quite a few patrols moving in and about the tower. I considered opening fire and probably being able to drop a good portion of the enemy before they could zero in on our position. But a firefight is always a risk, and these AI had been around for a few missions and I had started to anthropomorphize them a bit and secondly I might get hit and killed. As I considered how I would start the engagement a sudden hole opened up in the patrol pattern, I realised the tower is unguarded and I had an opportunity to do something I had not considered. I got up and ran as fast as I could towards the tower, all the time expecting the bullets to start cracking above my head. I kept scanning as I ran whizzling through bushes trying to pick a path that the least visibility to any patrols. After what seemed like far too long I reached the tower and threw out a satchel charge and another for good measure, if one would not bring the tower down it would sure attract attention. I turned around and made my way back, as I closed on my men I started ordering them to fall back, hope growing that I might get out of this alive. Falling back to about 400 meters I finally detonated the satchel charges and the tower fell, from there it was just a short run to the truck and back to Command. I had done it. I had pulled off the perfect mission, not a shot fired and all under my command back alive. That is what this game is about.

Where do I start with Arma 3... 1st of all, have I played enough of this game? No, not in the slightest. My total playtime (see above) is pathetic in comparison to those around me. I see upwards of 2000, 3000, 4000 hours just looking at the reviews currently. At the time of writing this review, I sit on a measly 61 hours of gameplay, so I am in no way an expert of this game. What I CAN tell you is that there are moments in that 61 hours of gameplay that I will probably never forget. This game makes you feel things you won't feel in any other shooter. Call of Duty thrives on high adrenaline, rapid paced combat. Battlefield slows it down a bit, but maintains a good balance of action and spacing between engagements. Arma 3 is a completely different ballpark. There is a LOT of spacing between engagements, which adds massive suspense and makes every firefight very, very meaningful. When combat initiates, there is definately adrenaline pumping action, but it's not fast. Combat is very slow, almost methodical (just like real life) but very, very... awesome. Some things that you'll see in an Arma firefight that you will not see anywhere else: - Engagements will be very long distance, often hundreds of meters away, especially if you're roaming the hills or open wilderness. Enemies may only be a fleck in your scope, on another hill entirely, several football fields away from you. - You often won't know where you're getting shot from if you're taken by surprise. You don't get any indicators that say "Hey! someone to your left just shot you!". Instead, you'll be forced to take cover and locate the enemy the old fashioned way: watching and listening. - If you get shot, you probably wont have time to react. One or two shots will kill you without much warning. - Teamplay is CRUCIAL. Medics, Anti-Tank, Heavy Gunners all have a part to play in their teams success. - Communication on a whole other level. There is a radio/audio system in the game that is essential to a squad's success. Squad leaders will be vocal, squadees must be willing to take orders and communicate with their superioirs. Directions will not be called out like "LEFT! RIGHT!" but rather with compass bearings such as "There's at least 3 of them at... 248" - Stand/Crouch/Prone is also at another level entirely. You can also hunch over, stand up super tall, sit down, lean on your side, bend your body left and right etc.. Manipulating these stances and using them to show as little of you as possible may be a key factor on whether you live or die - Every move you make has a pro and a con attached to it. Fire your weapon? Might kill someone, but you might also give your position away or get shot as you peak out of cover. Forget to look left? Arma teaches that wherever you don't look, there will be something that kills you. - NO HITMARKERS. You have to make your own call as to whether or not the guy you just shot is dead. If you make the wrong call, your squad may advance only for one of them to be shot by a (very much alive) enemy solider - Tanks and armored vehicles are terrifying. It's not like Battlefield where a tank shows up, everybody continues their daily routines and hopefully somebody with anti tank weaponry deals with the 15 ton chunk of metal. Armored vehicles are terrifyingly powerful with weapons foot soldiers can only dream of. A whole squad of 20 people will immediately hit the deck if one of them shpws up, hoping that their AT guys can do the job because... - You don't respawn back into the heat of battle. You reaspawn in a base in the middle of nowhere and you either have to take a helicopter to meet with your squad, or "HALO jump", which teleports you to an exaxct location but 6000 feet up in the sky, forcing you to have to use your parachute to land safely. HALO jumping back into combat is suicide. Big shiny glorified baloons make really, really good target practice. That also means... - If you lose that aforementioned anti-tank guy, you're hooped unless someone takes the risk and picks the launcher off his dead body. That is, unless the tank/armored car blows him up before he gets there. Then 20 people are stranded with very little to do, which means... - Every life counts. The combat is unreal. I remember we had to clear this city of enemies, entirely. It took us upwards of an hour, but we checked every single building, room by room, until, In the center plaza, there he stood; the last man we had to kill. All the other building were checked, and I saw a head poking out behind this obstacle in the dead center of the city, "I found him!" I yell over the squad's radio, "Central Garden, straight north" I notice he pokes his head around the corner. My assault rifle was depleted. I knew I should have packed more flipping ammo. So I pull out my pistol. Fire, miss, fire, miss, rinse andrepeat. I empty my whole clip and the man is not dead. So I reload, and just start Terminator walking my way towards this guy. Firing every round I have. The guy doesn't poke his head out anymore. One clip exhausted, then another. And another. This guy will not die. I least I'm supressing him. Then he pops around, shoots me once. Dead. My squad catches up "What the hell was all that shooting?!" the commander expresses. They grenade him. Dead. Wish I'd have thought of that sooner. The medic gives me a nice repair. I borrow some mags off of him. We get on the chopper, talking about how wicked that mission was. We get a new one, something about planting a bomb somewhere. At this point the squad has bonded. We knew eachothers names, at least. We just kept talking, getting closer to the LZ, mocking the pilot for driving too low to the ground. We land and immediately, the chopper comes under fire. "RUN! SPREAD OUT!" The heli blows up before it can leave. We all die in a blaze of glory. And I left the game after that. I cannot recommend this game enough.

I spent several years in the army and I gotta say this game is spot on with the training and atmosphere the military provides. I love how difficult this game is, and I love all of the different features the game provides. It is NOT easy to hit a target with an assault rifle from 300 yards in real life, and this game seems to match that same difficulty. Fatigue is a real thing and it seriously hinders your accuracy in real life...Arma 3 makes you stop and catch your breath if you run too far or carry too much gear, or you will have a hard time hitting your target. Enemies are not stupid and they have great vision. I was engaged by two enemies from about 200 yards away and they were using bushes for cover as well as 3-5 second rushes when moving. The AI is more advanced than the average taliban are in real life. haha :p Given my love for the military and for videogames, this one is definitely one of my favorites of all time :D

I'm not into arma anymore, but as you can probably tell from the amount of hours I've spent paying this game; I've had an incredible time. Most of the hours clocked into this game have been spent on roleplay servers. They were so fun back in the day..people weren't too serious, and neither too silly. It was very balanced, very fun. Very replayable. But arma ain't all about roleplay, so let's talk about other things: I'll start with combat mechanics, obviously - as the game is all about fighting lol. The combat is ABSOLUTELY FLIPPING GREAT! You got things like bullet drop which keeps you on your game, and other things such as weapons becoming less effective as the bullet travels mid-air..you also have very aweosme-looking postures which you can adopt; from laying prone, to sitting on your bum, to crouching, leaning side-to-side, and all dat weird jazz. It's also very realistic in that, you can only take 1-5 shots before you die pending on which weapon is used against you and what kind of protective gear you have equipped. This means that you have to be VERY careful in-game, otherwise you might just get shot in the head and die. Personally, I enjoy such hardcore mechanics. Another hardcore mechanic is how damage taken is based on where you are hit on your body. So if you've been shot in the head, you're likely to take a hell of a lot of damage, and this is where armour becomes a huge importance; without armour, you are as vulnerable as a mouse surrounded by a horde of cats. I shouldn't even need to stress how much you need armour! You can go light, or heavy - your choice. The amount you wear does affect movement speed though, so do be careful of that. It also affects how badass you look; I generally like to go light so I look like a badass mofo who is totally capable of destroying anyone who crosses my path lol. Not only that, but your appearance can also affect how easily an enemy can spot you. So if you have a huge bag on your back, and lightly coloured clothes- you can be sure people will spot you with ease. So yeah. Useful information there, I know. But I am most certainly not done! We have to talk about the tanks, and the awesome vehicles that can totally blow ur balls off! In arma, there are about 20 different ground vehicles, all unique in both appearance and purpose. You have a few anti-vehicle tanks, a few anti-people tanks, and a few artillery and anti-air tanks. Personally, I love the artillery....they're like mini nukes lol. You also have APPACHI ATTACK HELICTOPERS! I mean who doesn't like that!? And some awesome looking submarines and attack planes..and boats :):) AND CARS WITH MOUNTED TURRETS ON! Yeah, long-story-short -- arma has tons of vehicles, all awesome in both appearance and nature. Very useful for committing mass-genocide on dem pesky capitalist NATO forces....mmmm, satisfactory Also sorry for not listing their names. I no good wit dat :(:( Arma also has lots of game modes to choose from, so you're not restricted to just playing one gamemode and getting bored after an hour. I believe I've already listed one already; roleplay. Others include but are not limited to(due to custom game modes etc); TDM, KOH, KTF, PLAYER VS AI(forgot the official classification, sorry), 5v5 COMPETITIVE MATCHES (like that csgo competitive game mode), custom zombie modes, and survival modes. There are also singleplayer game modes which you can host, such as Zeus or custom Addons which allow for various different gameplay experiences; which brings me to my next topic... There are loads of mods available on the steam workshop! From halo mods, to Star Wars, to enhanced combat system and mechanic mods, xcom mods, and various others which add more vehicles, factions, armour/clothing, more ai, etc... The settings menus are also vast and fleshed out in arma, so you can rest assured that you'll be able to configure almost anything you want. The game also doesn't require a very high-tier computer to function nominaly, so lag shouldn't really be a problem; especially if you tune down the graphics via the settings menus a bit. This'll be the last topic within this review; multiplayer. Multiplayer is obviously a huge part of the game, as I've briefly mentioned previously(with the game modes). This game is almost solely multiplayer-based, but singleplayer is a thing and can be fun, so don't feel restricted. This game being focused mainly on multiplayer is obviously good for playing with friends. You can have much fun playing with friends online in this game, much fun indeed. Lag can be a problem though, so make sure you have a decent internet connection and don't be disappointed if you can't play with a friend based half way across the world from you :) but personally I feel the devs have really improved connectibility over the passed years in terms of multiplayer. Id say it's currently at its peak. Check this game out. It's relatively cheap for its value, so I advise such. Apologies if I've missed some flavourful features or mechanics. I'll definitely be sure to edit this review if anyone comes in screaming at me about how I didn't include "this and that and this and that and this and that" lol. :)

My first game on A3 brought me the most horrific experience I've ever had in any game, ever. We're on our way to the objective, a small dump east of a town occupied by enemy forces. I'm leading a team of 4 men. We come to a crossroad and I sprint across, telling my men to hold back. I cross a few more times, trying to get a response from any snipers. Nothing. I run, my Autorifleman runs, my Medic runs. But I kept my Marksman on the other side to make sure we'd make it across. Anybody seen Full Metal Jacket all the way through? Remember the sniper scene? The marksman takes a round in the leg as we're running and goes down. He then takes two more in the chest. The kid who was playing had some mad acting skills, he played it up to 11 here. He screams as he's being shot. Crawling, drenched in his own blood. "SARGE? YOU AIN'T LEAVING ME OUT HERE LIKE THIS, RIGHT? I-I WANNA GO WITH YOU GUYS! C'MON SARGE, H-HELP ME! C'MON! PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME!" he died after that. I cried and he respawned. 11/10, would recommend getting.
