This game brought back so many memories from my childhood, was worth it to buy it again. Animals reproduce like rabits Most of the animals die of starvation Koalas are extremly easy to take care of Train rides flock in money Penguins make stupid sounds 11/10 Would go back to my childhood again

I remember playing this game when I was young. I own the 2004 retail version. When I bought the Steam version. The game says 2007 which was probably released 3 years later in Europe. And the fonts were different than the retail version I own. Although they didn't bother fixing the invisible cursor bug in this version.

    Nostalgia

This game advertizes itself as the Zoo Tycoon games you've been nostalgic for, and that's exactly what it is. Nothing more, nothing less. The features are identical and the gameplay a slightly polished version of what you know and love from your childhood. The scenarios are rather boring but you're not forced into playing them, and the custom gamemodes let you start off with max cash and just have fun designing your zoo! I do miss some elements I remember from the old Zoo Tycoon games I used to play, like being able to play with and clean your animals individually, but this /isn't/ the old Zoo Tycoon, so what can you do. It satisfies your nostalgia itch perfectly, but it doesn't offer much more. It's addictive for the first few weeks you play it, but there's not much sense of reward in the long run. 5/10. Probably not worth the full price, but a fun game short-term nonetheless.

This game was my childhood. Since I didn't know any English, I sucked at it. When I re-discovered it a few months ago, I just had to try it again. Sadly, not only was it lacking graphic-wise (which is understandable considering how old it is), it also had many bugs. I keep on replaying missions but never get the promised rare animals, even when I am supposed to get them. My animals won't stop dying even when I do everything I'm supposed to, and the game starts crashing at a certain point. I was also very disappointed when I found out that rare animals aren't obtainable in free-form game. I'd recommend it only if you played it when little.

I wanted to like the game; I bet it's not bad, and maybe it's just my settings/computer but there IS a mouse sensitivity option in the menu, but I can't get around the strange mouse sensitivty when trying to click small objects. It feels like the mouse movement detection is not sensitive enough and I have to jerk the cursor farther than where I want it to go so it makes precise aiming for building things VERY obnoxious. I tried every slot in the mouse sensitivity settings in the game. I have to admit, this drove me nuts after 10 minutes of the game so I can't say much about anything else as I could barely click things I wanted to. I honestly wish I could have experienced a bit more of the game, but it was getting close to the two weeks refund period so I figured for the $1.75 I paid, I'll just grab my refund now and if I want to give it another chance later, I shall.

(My Steam play time on this game isn't accurate at all. I actually played it obsessively for days or weeks.) I'd recommend this game on a sale, or the improved version, Marine Park Empire (which I don't have and therefore cannot review, but is bigger and apparently better). Zoo Empire is pretty addictive for a while even if you're an impatient person. One of the things I like about this game that I feel is an improvement over Zoo Tycoon 2 is that you get a list of the exact requirements and preferences of each animal, and every one of those that gets fulfilled changes color from red to white when you get it just right; this list also says which other species can live in the same exhibit, whereas in ZT, you have to guess. On top of that, there's the pretty useful Zoo Consultant tips that help you solve any other problems the animal may have that are not on the list, like in Zoo Tycoon 1. Another thing I liked better is the design of the visitors (which are kind of cute) and animals (less cartoony). Also, the in-game camera function is pretty straightforward and I think I actually prefer it to ZT2's camera. And one thing that is definitely better is the music, which in Zoo Tycoon is non-existent except for the main menu theme, and even if there are only like 2 in-game tracks in Zoo Empire, they are pretty awesome and fitting; I often find myself missing that music when playing ZT2. There's also the awesome complaint report (which eliminates the need to check on each visitor to read their opinions) and the the visitor/animal thought balloons list (which shows you all the unfulfilled needs in the zoo, and, again, saves you a lot of time). There's probably more pros, but I can't think of anything else that is better in Zoo Empire than in ZT2 at the moment, so I will edit this review next time I play it. I gotta say though, there's a good variety of animals. But I must say that this game can get pretty buggy, such as when animals randomly won't drink water that is available in their exhibits, and in turn become sick (and if you're playing at the highest game speed and don't notice fast enough, an animal you just adopted can die in seconds; though this only happened to me once). I think what I noticed first after trying ZT2 is that, in Zoo Empire, they did try to improve on it by adding more features which could've made the game more complex and engaging (such as having to hire different specialists to research buildings, educational programs, adoptable animals and cures for diseases; staff training; individual animal playfulness, trainability and popularity which affect/are affected by animal shows; allocating your budget to staff salary, advertisement and research; staff morale...) if only all of those features were implemented differently or worked correctly/as I assume they were intended to work; instead, most of those features seem pointless or are entirely useless, make the game feel more unfair and frustrating, or rarely end up making the game less complex but worse (ironically). And I don't know if it's supposed to work like this, but the animals that prefer a hilly terrain are extremely specific about the exact form (and amount) of the hills they want for their exhibit; most of the time, I spent several minutes trying to get it right but I could only succeed once, and it's really annoying having to see one or multiple thought bubbles that are reminding me at all times that those animals are not entirely satisfied (and that's another thing: thought bubbles on animals and visitors are really visually distracting and frustrating, they seem to never go away). The other needs, flora and rocks in particular, are insanely expensive because you need to buy a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of plants and rocks for those needs to be fulfilled, and trees take up a shit-ton of space from the exhibit. Oh, and the visitors have shit AI; the designs and funny names do not make up for it. Speaking of visuals, the lack of shading (or minimal shading) makes it hard to distinguish items and animals sometimes, and it can make your eyes hurt because the colors are so bright. In short, they tried to put so many features and mechanics in this game that in the end it came out as a really watered down Zoo Tycoon 2 clone. But despite its many flaws, it's still fun and addictive, at least for a couple of weeks, and I absolutely don't regret spending the equivalent to $1.20 US dollar on this game that I haven't finished (besides, thanks to it, I ended up playing Zoo Tycoon). However if you've already played ZT, you're probably not going to find much enjoyment in Zoo Empire. If, for some reason, you don't plan on buying the enhanced version Marine Park Empire (like me), buy this on a sale.
