MEET THE DETECTIVES

MEET DETECTIVE ALLY

Name: Allison Abernathy ("Ally" for short)

From: Glasgow, Scotland

Ally grew up in a police family and was always destined to sign up. A force to be reckoned with, when she puts her mind to something, nothing gets in her way.

But that streak of success came to a head when the case of the Cryptic Killer fell across her desk. Partnering with Polish detective, 'Old Dog' Kowalski, at first it seemed like just another day, another case, and another criminal to be caught…

But this case would prove to be different. Success would come at a far greater cost, lasting Detective Abernathy for decades to come. With a new lead and a new peril, old wounds are about to be reopened.

MEET DETECTIVE OLD DOG

Name: Steve "Old Dog" Kowalski

From: Krakow, Poland

Old Dog has an age beyond his years, older, wiser, and hardened by life. From an early age, he wanted to work in law enforcement and achieved his dreams as a young officer in the Polish police force.

His career followed success after success, that was until he was assigned a curious international case with Scottish detective 'Ally' to track down the Cryptic Killer. With the killer safely behind bars, something didn't quite feel right. That something has been nagging at Old Dog for decades since.

Essentially a loner, Old Dog spends his nights listening to Jazz and drinking whisky as he obsesses over the details of the old case. All but keeping him from spiraling is his partner Ally. Will this new break upset the careful balance?

Fun to play, if you are searching for casual puzzles! Nice visuals, but obvious plot twist (not really important for this type of game, i guess). No unsolvable puzzles. But the puzzles always boil down to "find 3-4 numbers to open a lock". If you don't like this, you probably don't like escape games in general. Had great two hours with this game. It isworth the price

Was a pleasant game. Me and my friend managed to beat it and we clearly aren't the brightest considering how long it took us to clear the first level. Some of the clues were quite frankly useless and started more questions than they answered. I do wish the final ''clue'' actually could give you a direct answer. Overall the puzzles were fun and challenging, communication is the key when it comes to this game. Gives you some nice opportunities to insult your friend's intellect.

This game was not what I expected at all. The FREE DEMO was longer, more in depth, and interesting. Guessing the answer to multiple of the SAME EXACT PADLOCK FINAL OBJECTIVES was way more rewarding than actually solving the puzzles. The only reason why we have to guess at the answers to puzzles, which was just the same padlock code puzzle every time, was because the puzzles made NO SENSE AT ALL. The only reason why I have three hours logged into this game is because of dreadfully awful connectivity issues that would take ten minutes to sort out and then restart the puzzle because it would kick me out of the lobby. This game would've taken my friend and I around 90 minutes to complete if those connectivity issues weren't present. The fact that the demo was much more engaging, interesting, fleshed out, and unique is absolutely mind boggling. This game even has the AUDACITY to end on a cliffhanger after doing the same ending to a puzzle for ALL FIVE PUZZLES. I recently played a game on the Gamecube, which had more puzzles and variety than this game, which came out recently. This game is nothing short of a quick cash grab and highway robbery. I could write an actual 6 page essay on how PAINFULLY TERRIBLE this game is. DO NOT BUY! IT IS A SLAP TO THE FACE TO ANYONE THAT LIKES PUZZLE GAMES! EASY 1/10!

I wish I could give this a "meh" rating but as I can't ... Played it with my friend, took us 2 hours to complete, which is fine but not terribly lengthy. We were both disappointed that the puzzles were just in increasingly smaller boxes while the demo had characters moving around. The narrative end was also very dumb due to an earlier puzzle revealing information that the derectives just ... Never act upon so I assume there can be a sequel. Most of the puzzles fall into two categories: frustrating or basic. The frustrating ones because they're tedious to do, and the basic ones that involve things like music notes, morse code, semaphore, basic chemistry etc. We only got stuck once and it was over such a small, stupid thing that I'm honestly annoyed by it. The voice acting was okay, same as the art. There is 0 replayability because once you solved the puzzles, the numbers remain the same, and if you've written them down then you can easily breeze through. To sum up, it was fun to slog through with my bestie for a few hours, but rapidly became boring, and it didn't live up to the excitement we had felt over the demo game.

My friend and I enjoyed playing the demo for this game, so we were looking forward to the full versions release. However, upon playing, we found that it didnt quite live up to our expectations. Although some of the puzzles were challenging, we found that others were too easy and a bit boring. The repetitive nature of the puzzle design, with four puzzles per box for a combination lock with four numbers, made it feel like we were just going through the motions at times. The story also left a lot to be desired. If I had to rate the game without the demo, I would say that the puzzles and story were too simplistic. I had hoped for more from the full version. Despite these shortcomings, the game is still worth a try if youre a fan of puzzle games, and you can expect to spend about 2 to 3 hours on it.

This game was reviewed using Version 1.0.6. Your experience on other versions may vary.

    Short Answer:

A two-player escape room puzzle game that was way more fun than my friend and I expected it to be. Aside from one puzzle that I don't feel was a good fit for this kind of game, the average quality of the rest of the puzzles was solid, offering just enough variety and complexity to keep things interesting until the very end. Around a 3-hour runtime, and well worth its low price tag for anyone looking for something new to play with their friend or partner.

    Long Answer:

Unboxing the Cryptic Killer is an escape room puzzle game that follows detectives Ally and Old Dog as they attempt to solve the decade-old cold case of the Cryptic Killer. When an anonymous tip leads them into what appears to be one of the Cryptic Killer's traps, the two detectives are locked in adjacent puzzle rooms and need to work together in order to make it out alive. Before picking this game up, there are a couple things you should know: <*>It's a game for exactly two players—no more, no less—and both players must own the game to play. <*>There's no ability to search for active games with randoms online, you need to directly invite/join someone via an invite code. <*>There's no in-game voice/text chat function, so you'll need a third-party service like Discord to talk with your co-op partner. And when I say you "need" a chat service to communicate, I mean it. No puzzle can be fully solved on your own because each player only holds half of every puzzle, so good communication is necessary in order to win. You're given the option to play as either Ally and Old Dog; and your choice determines which of the two rooms—and which half of the puzzle solutions—you'll be able to see. Neither side is better or worse, so don't put too much thought into who you pick.

The rest of this review contains spoilers for some of the puzzle design you can expect from the game, so proceed with caution.

Each of the five levels contains a box with, among other things, a four-digit combination lock; and the code can be found piecemeal by solving the other puzzles found inside the box. There's a lot of variety to the mechanics and presentation of the puzzles, but almost all of them boil down to you uncovering a number you'll need for the main lock. The actual process of getting these numbers is what matters, though, because you'll find everything from logic puzzles to word puzzles and even other mini-sized puzzle games standing between you and your escape. Some puzzles will require information that isn't universally known (e.g. morse code), but thankfully it provides some quick reference charts for these kinds of puzzles so you can generally get by with no external assistance. They also took some simple but crucial steps to ensure accessibility for players that are colorblind or deaf/hard of hearing: the handful of color-based puzzles include separate visual indicators for each colored component, and the single audio-based puzzle also includes a small visual aid so it can be done without needing to actually hear it. As for the game's difficulty, I guess it depends. Some players found it too easy, but I thought it offered a good, balanced difficulty overall. Again, what will make or break your playthrough is how well you and your co-op partner can communicate, namely when it comes to explaining the details of things you see on your respective screens. Sure, you could just use Discord's screen share feature and make things way easier for yourselves, but where's the fun in that? I shouldn't judge, though, because even though we did our best to avoid it, my friend and I ended up screen cheating on two separate occasions. The first one was just because we were being kinda dumb, but the other was due to a puzzle that I don't feel makes a good fit for the escape room format: <*>A connect-the-dots puzzle in Level 1. I could argue that the solution from my (Old Dog) perspective wasn't as clear as it could've been; but I blame this one more on us not yet understanding the "language" of the puzzle design yet, because things went a lot more smoothly once we got past that point. <*>A nonogram (also called picross) puzzle in Level 3. Personally, this is my absolute favorite type of logic puzzle ever, but my friend had never done one before and struggled to the point that I had to step in and help him solve it. Ignoring the lack of support features a dedicated picross game provides (like being able to "X" out squares or cross off numbers you've completed), the puzzle provided is in a 5x15 grid—for reference, just about any picross game eases you into things with 5x5 grids. It's the only puzzle in the game that goes beyond providing a reference chart and just straight-up hands you a page of written instructions on how nonograms work. As much as I adore them on their own, I feel like if a puzzle requires that much on-the-spot explanation for the layperson to figure it out, it might be better to use a different type of puzzle entirely. This one is more of a nitpick than anything, but I'm not the biggest fan of the achievements list. Unlocking them doesn't require require much effort, but most of them are locked to one character, meaning you'll need to play the game at least twice—once as each character—in order to get 100% completion. The issue is that there's no good incentive to replay the game for missing achievements because the puzzle solutions don't change between runs. Sure, it's kinda neat going back to see what your co-op partner saw, but the novelty of that wears off pretty quick. On the flip side, it also means that more dedicated completionists can just pull up a guide and blitz through a final achievement hunt in a matter of minutes, which is what my friend and I did once we beat the game. We finished our main playthrough in a little over 3 hours, and it was honestly a lot more fun than we anticipated. Sure, it wasn't perfect; but if the only problems big enough to point out are one or two puzzles and some slightly out-of-the-way achievements, I'd say it did a damn good job. Unboxing the Cryptic Killer was a surprisingly fun co-op experience, and given its low price, it's hard for me not to recommend it. For more game reviews, check out my Curator page!
