  I have waited for this game ever since Robbaz did a goofy vid on it WAY back in 2016. I was so hyped for TWoM because of the interesting take it seemed to have on horror games, where YOU are the killer instead of some NPC threat. It looked amazing and the graphics were breathtaking. Then 2 days before it was supposed to release it was delayed till later on in the year for "polishing and improvement". I jumped in joy when I found out the game would be releasing today and immediately bought it first chance I got home. As badly as I tried to enjoy this game, it is nothing like what was promised. The graphics have been SEVERELY downgraded, performance has tanked, there is no save function whatsoever, its increasingly difficult to figure out what you need to do, and worst of all it lasts LESS THAN AN HOUR OF PLAYTIME. It feels as if the devs had a neat concept with the original demo back in 2016, but struggled to get anywhere past that portion and ran out of ideas. It pains me to have to not recommend this game but I just can find anything good in it whatsoever. EDIT: I have been banned from the community hub, and the devs have publicly announced that they will not improve the game or update it and have instead moved on to a different project in hopes it will be more successful. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!

  Boy oh boy, where to start with this one. Well, it's safe to say that you should buckle up for what is going to be a wild ride of a review. The Works of Mercy is a game that had been in production since at least 2016, with a final release of September 2018, and it even made its way to Steam Greenlight (RIP) and Kickstarter; where it became fully funded, with some additional cash thrown in for good measure. There were tons of hype videos posted all around YouTube, various "big names" tried it out and did their overreactions on it, and overall it was looking pretty promising. The graphics were decent, the horror and gore seemed effective enough, and there was the cool concept of putting players in the role of the killer. Sadly, as we've all learned with so many crowd-funded games, sometimes things just don't work out like they were supposed to. That's exactly the position that The Works of Mercy is in. Just from a quick glance-over of the Kickstarter campaign it's clear that a lot was scrapped from this release. A lot. Now, I've played a horror game or two in my time. Hundreds of them, in fact. Some amazing, some mediocre, and some downright abysmal. The Works of Mercy is one of those rare titles that manages to cement itself even further down the spiral of "abysmal", and into an unnamed category reserved for the games that were totally given up on by their creators. It's kind of like an Island of Misfit Toys, but for games. So, what is this game exactly and what makes it so bad? Well, to put it bluntly there's absolutely nothing redeeming here. In the context of story, you're an unnamed man and your wife and child have been kidnapped by some random stranger. He's holding them hostage as a way to force you into killing people; starting with a hooker, your choice of a skinny-minny or a fatty. Taking place almost solely in a small apartment, you listen to this guy ramble on, then you call in a few more people, kill them, and that's it. They don't even react to the other dead bodies in the house. There are also some dialogue choices, but they don't really affect much at all. There aren't any scares, and you only get to actually see one of the people die. The plot makes zero sense, it's boring, and there's literally no point to any of it. The campaign can be finished in under an hour, which is ludicrous for something that's priced regularly at $17.49 CAD. There's also no save feature because it's that short; this is made all the more unfortunate by the fact that there are several areas that you can become physically stuck, and therefore you're forced to restart from the very beginning... which no one in their right mind would want to do. There are tons of indie horror cliches, which include but are not limited to having an abusive alcoholic father, being an abusive alcoholic father, and having an extramarital affair. The graphics have also been severely downgraded from what was shown initially, and roughly 80% of what was shown on the Kickstarter has been left out. There's also some weird disco effect that happens when you're about to kill someone, and it's just yet another out-of-place thing that happens in this release. This is a bare-bones, abandoned version of The Works of Mercy. It's more than clear that the creators gave up shortly into the development process. Furthermore, the store page even has screenshots of things that don't actually exist in the final product, and the first trailer is extremely misleading. This is the worst horror release in recent memory, buying anything else is nearly infinitely better than The Works of Mercy, regardless of how bad it may be. It would be better to get another hobby than to play this title if you had nothing else to play, it's indeed that bad, and the entire fiasco borders on scammer territory. This is exactly why people don't trust or support crowd-funding anymore.   What can I say...this game had such promise... Why the downgraded graphics? Why no save function? Oh and don't get me started on the textures in the basement.. Thank you Steam refund.. Do yourself a favor and grab this on a super sale..like under $5

  I decided to buy this game even though a lot of reviews gave it thumbs down. I am picky about my games. Due to the bad reviews and the 15$ price tag, I wasn't expecting much. The atmosphere is great. The graphics are great (no blurry textures in the basement imo) - sometimes borderlines photo realism. No frame drops here (1080 ti 4k max details) whatsoever, the idea is pretty sweet. I like the ending, I've played it twice and only realized what's happening on the second time. There are two endings and once you notice the "hint" of how you should think in the game (it's in plain sight, just open your eyes), you can reach the "good ending" pretty easily. It combines horror, psychology and actual real beliefs in some Christianity streams. Yes, you do easily feel the lack of experience of the developers. Yes, except the great graphics you can sense that they simply don't know how to animate a head blow up or a drill that goes into someone's skull, so they simply blackens the screen and put you right back in the scene a second after. Yes, it might get somewhat boring at times. Yes, it is about an hour long and there's no save feature (which is the weakest spot, no doubt). I had a game breaking bug, stuck in a position I can't move from at some point in the game, had to start over. No other bugs noticed. But the idea and the real horror is, overall, pretty much fun, for 15$. Don't expect to much, you might mildly enjoy it. It's certainly shows some new concepts for the first time in a game.

  I did not mind the length..I did not mind the missing ability to save..I was even going to give the game a chance and explore the endings..But this game has some bugs and the developer just stated that they are moving onto another project and no fixes or features were planned. As soon as I read that I requested a refund..Do yourselves a favor and save your money for indie games that the developers actually care about.

  I bought this game because it was so poorly rated. It was pretty bad, but not fun bad, so it was still a negative experience. I think the very poor reviews are pretty accurate. It's not fun as a good game and it's not fun as a bad game. bad story. bad mechanics. but the graphics were surprisingly good for such a bad game.

  I'm so disappointed with this game, It looks fantastic and really shows off what the unreal 5 engine can do but the game itself is terrible. From what I can see there is no way to save your game so you have to start from the beginning every time you exit it. This alone is enough not to buy the game as it is extremely annoying. You cant skip speaking sequences so you have to sit through the same thing over an over every time you quit out. There is this really stupid key arrangement, you have the standard mouse and WASD to move and look around but when you need to select phrases to talk to someone, you have to use the enter key and there is no way to change it. You cant change any key settings. There is also this really weird affect that they decided to overlay sequences of importance, its this motion sickness colour cycling lens. It really spoils the awesome graphics that they obviously invested a lot of time into. I know this is a suspense game but it is TOO dark to see anything in some places. I've turn the gamma settings to the highest settings possible and didn't really change anything. Again, it is hiding all the hard work that they put into the environment. The point a click system to use things within the game is no very refined either so at times its very difficult to use items. The sound is quite low too, so it is difficult to hear anything. Like I said really disappointed in this and I have given up playing it as it is just too frustrating to play. It's very close to the worst game I have played. Basically its a graphics showcase to show of how good unreal 5 engine is when you can see it.

  W T F !!! 3200 second of gameplay and the game will end before the story takes you into it. And I'm not talking about the fucking polish end !!! After an hour of boredom, I began to think that something was finally happening, and suddenly it flashes and it is over.

  I really wanted to make this work so bad. I focused so hard on the good side of this game but there's too much downsides for me to actually recommend it. I waited for so long to finally play this game and it breaks my heart that my first not recommended review is for a game that sat on the #1 spot of my wishlist for almost a year. The moment I launched the game, I knew already that they downgraded the quality of this game. Just by basing on the quality of the main menu it looked so poor... but hey, don't judge the game by its cover right? For the first 10 minutes of gameplay, I was still impressed by the realistic graphics and textures of the game. It's really nice but it wasn't enough for me to recommend this game. What really annoys me the most was the color filter as if it was taken from Windows Movie Maker. It made the game look cheap. The hospital scene was so dark that I think they purposely did it to hide the lack of details. The story is okay, good twist but not really something new. Also, no objective list and no save function. I finished the game for almost just an hour and that is just too short imo. This game had so, so, much potential I just hope that they gave it more love and attention because it felt rushed and forced. The game already had a good following after the hype a few years ago, I just hope the devs used that advantage, took good care of this game and made it successful.

  Review in german and english. ---- Dieses Spiel ist ein Witz. Als ich den ersten Trailer und einige Demo-Videos sah waren meine Erwartungen relativ hoch. Ich rechnete mit einer interessanten Story und einem komplexen Spiel. Aber das was Ende September als finale Version erschien ist nichts weiter als ein 14,99€ teurer Scherz. Das Spiel ist verbuggt, die Untertitel sind oft falsch, der Sound wirkt billig und das größte Problem: Die kurze Spieldauer. All das wär nicht einmal ein Problem für mich, wenn das Spiel günstiger als 5€ wäre und die Entwickler von vornherein den Spielern reinen Wein eingeschenkt und das Konzept genauer erläutert hätten. Auch dann wäre es nur ein geradenoch so durchschnittliches Spiel, aber der Kunde hätte wenigstens gewusst, worauf er sich einlässt. Aber unter den jetzigen Umständen spielt das Spiel schon fast in einer Liga mit Steam-Spielen wie ,,One Day for Ched" und ist meiner Meinung nach einfach nur Betrug. Steam/Valve sollte wenigstens höhere Qualitätsstandarts setzen und solche Spiele vor dem Erscheinen besser überprüfen. ---- This game is a joke. When I saw the first trailer and a few demo-gameplays, I expected a very interesting story and an extensive game. But what we got in the end is just a 14,99€ expensive joke. The final game is buggy, the subtitles are often incorrect, the sound appears to be sleazy and the biggest lack of the game: the short gameplay-time. This wouldn't be a problem, if the game would cost less than 5€ and the developers would have pronounced the concept from the beginning. It still would be not more than an average game, but the customers would have known what they would buy, when this game came out. But under this circumstances the game plays almost in one league with steam-games like ,,One Day for Ched" and is deception in my opinion. Steam/Valve should set higher quality-standarts and check games like this before the release.
