The frame of an enjoyable game is present, but it's such a buggy mess that you'll shake your head or be frustrated. The major issues are: 1) Game focuses on mobility, as you can auto-target lock enemies for firing your weapon. However, enemies move significantly faster than you, and your booster / dodge jets don't recharge fast enough. This makes the optimal method of avoid enemies just jumping into the air, which is idiotic. In addition, the protag gets stuck on terrain much too easily. 2) Camera issues - the camera will clip when you perform core extractions, showing you the empty space under the thin ground layer. In addition the camera will bug out when trying to auto target, or when transitioning from a cutscene to play, often flipping around you or spinning about. This makes it difficult to control your character for precious seconds, while either the timed section slips away or enemies attack. 3) Platforming - it's just double jump and dash, with some "recharger" gates hovering mid-air, that recharge your double jump and dash... allowing you to double jump and dash, again. Sometimes you use a spider-bot as a sort of grapple, but really the variance here is grapple -> double jump and dash to the next grapple point -> grapple -> repeat. Your space bar will hate you if you're using KB+M. 4) Random companion lock outs. With no explanation or reasonable purpose you might be locked out of using your companion at various times. For example, one chamber in the dungeon immediately after acquiring the spider-bot required its use, however, the companion was inexplicably "locked" (as in the lock icon appeared next to his icon, meaning he couldn't be used, despite having full health). No jailor bots were present, either. This softlocked my progress and required exiting and restarting the game, meaning I had to redo large swaths that didn't save due to a checkpoint system. 5) Horrid geometry pop-in and pop-out, either at various camera angles or due to LOD intended for weak consoles. The settings should've been made adjustable for PC. 6) Leveling doesn't seem to have any direct purpose other than limiting the parts bots can equip. Your gun doesn't appear to do more damage, and even when fighting enemies of your own level the protagonist is hilariously fragile, even with health upgrades. If this was the intent they should've removed the protagonist's health bar and instead done a "strike" system - 1 or 2 hits and you're dead. 7) Eenemies home in on you while performing their attacks, include dash attacks such as those by canine enemies. Again, your only recourse is to double jump in the air like an idiot, despite the fact that enemies will home in on you and stunlock you. 8) At some point the game decides to throw in jailor bots regularly that lock your companion until you can rescue them. This would be acceptable if A) they didn't clip your companion into the ground and make it nigh impossible to see what's happening, and B) the auto-targeting wasn't garbage and targeted the jailer bots easily, instead of locking onto your companion. From what I've seen the aforementioned clipping is a bug and not intended behavior, as early instances held the companion up in the air and didn't clip them through any geometry. 9) The one thing the games wishes to focus on - mobility - is often removed by small combat arenas, preventing the one defense you have. It's utterly trite and amateur design that only serves to frustrate you. 10) Timed dungeons. Be warned - it's enjoyable in the first few hours but the cracks start showing in the facade and the game gets frustrating. Avoid completely.

I don't know what all the negative reviews are about. I understand the comments about bugginess, that is true at times but the ones about no story and the world being bland are just false. I'm a completionist and like to do all the little points of interest before doing main story stuff. It was a challenge (enough to frustrate me a lot of the times which is a love-hate thing for me) to complete the dungeons well enough to get all of the rewards. The story and lore is actually complex and beautiful if you pay enough attention to it (it's not in your face about it). They left it on a cliffhanger which made it wide open for a sequel which they have given the generic PR response of "if there's a big enough demand we'll make a sequel" (So I'm actually trying to get more people to play it because I really want a sequel, I want to know more). As for the comments about how you should be able to just swap your cores to different frames whenever you want instead of going to a teleport or your base, that just does not make any sense. You expect her to tote around 2 huge deadweight frames just to make the game easier for you and so you don't need to plan things out? How would you feel being forced to do that? And as for having all 3 companions at all times that would further displace the challenge of having things planned out to make sure you have the color of companion to match the colors of your enemies. That's just lazy. The lore is wonderful. The world is interesting. The characters are lovable. The gameplay is engaging.

    Not Worth the Headache

The game, about a personality-free heroine surviving in the dullest post-apocalyptic landscape, is divided in four unsatisfying mechanics: Exploration where you look for largely useless collectibles in inexplicably large maps, comprised of 20% light brown rock, 80% nothing, in eye-searing white. Gameplay feels like trying to read the tiny print on a lit light-bulb. More than once ended up with a headache after playing for a while. The rest of the time is spent in dungeons that come in two varieties: Nondescript cavern and uninspired sci-fi factory. Combat Even with a sort of progression system, combat remains pretty much unchanged throughout the entire game. There's some 5-6 enemies total in the entire game, too, so the only variety comes in the form of recolors and bigger numbers. Robot Building This was supposed to be the big highlight of the game, but it ends up being just as unsatisfying as everything else. Crafting is done through the clunkiest, most unhelpful menus possible. Switching your robot companions parts only changes their stats and nothing else. Well, it also changes how they look, but it's not like you even get to see them in the confusing mess that are the battles. Platforming Platforming is fine for the most part, but you spend most of your playthrough wishing you could just move faster. It's mostly doable except for the the very end of the game when difficulty of the platforming sections spikes through the roof. Overall For a Definitive Edition, it sure feels very unfinished. Hints of neat ideas are there, but never implemented well. The game keeps getting in its own way in everything it tries to do. It tries to be a colecta-thon, but the maps are huge and empty, making going out of your way to find the collectibles a slog. You also have a limited inventory for some inexplicable reason, so if you haven't gone back to empty it for some time, you just can't collect things anymore until you do. There's the robot companions that can help traversing the map and finding new things, but you're always limited to taking only two at a time, so it's highly likely you just won't have the one you need when you're out exploring. There's crafting, but the menus never give the info you need, and you're being held back from trying new things constantly. The game tells you to go out and explore, but also go back to your base all the time to do any of this. It starts out fine, but it really ends on a sour note. The last dungeon to get the ending is long, dull and grueling. The game decides to suddenly throw at you a seemingly endless gauntlet of platforming puzzles of a difficulty never before seen anywhere on the game, something that should've been an extra challenge mode instead. It kinda feels like they knew they did not have a decent ending for the story so they tried their best to keep you from reaching it. Also, unskippable credits. No, you don't get to hijack my computer until I see the name of the assistant to the senior regional marketing director. Final Thoughts It's fine. Try it out for yourself if it's free or close to that, and definitely do not try to 100% it.

ReCore is one of the most controversial games I own; in what way you may ask? The game is an absolute gorgeous gem to me, but to some people, whose reviews I've already read, it's a wasted opportunity for greatness. Let me elaborate... The game is a magical adventure through New Eden, a barren robotic planet that Joule, our protagonist, wakes up in after having hybernated in cryostasis for who knows how many years. Having but Mack, her mechanical pet, as companion, she must fight off New Eden's hazards in search for any lead concerning what had happened to her father; an ambitious scientist. New Eden is full of threats; from mechanical anomalies that will hunt you down relentlessly, to menacing atmospherical changes and hazards that will impede your progress in this adventure. However, Joule will amass an army of robotic companions that will help her through it all. Her rifle can be upgraded using colour add-ons that will allow Joule to deal tremendous damage to robots (or Cores, as they name them in the game) of the same colour. Her companions can also assist her in battle by activating their Lethal abilities, that will either stun, burn or just disorient the enemy cores depending on what colour they're wearing. Obviously you can customize your robotic companions by crafting upgrades at The Krawler (Joule's own safe haven) and you're also allowed to freely fast travel through places you've previously visited using Violet's special powers (a robotic Ninja that you'll meet in the first dungeon you come across; who's got an emotional DLC dedicated entirely to her). What I loved about the game is not the combat; it's the absolute fun platforming that reminds me of Supermario 3D games or even the old 2010s Spiderman games... Also swinging with Seth and gliding with Duncan is quite wholesome and I enjoyed it a lot. As I stated in the title of the review and from what I've read, the only people who disliked this game are those who have played it in consoles and thought the port was clunky, glitchy, buggy and overpriced. I thought the game was quite decent but I really cannot put myself in these people's place as I've never played this game on any consoles. This experience gets a 9/10 in my book and I just love how they made these robots convey emotions by cranking about... As far as I'm concerned, they've got more emotion that the actual humans in the game (the voice-acting is also decent). Also, you can make Mack into a ToasterPoodle... Imagine, you can bellyrub and toast your bread at the same time! Wowie!

You will read a lot of bad reviews for this game, and in its first release, the criticisms are valid. However, with the Definitive Edition, the developers fixed almost every negative aspect. This game is beautiful and a great experience. The characters are endearing, and if you take the time to listen to the collectible audio logs that give the backstory, you will root for them and cheer Joule and her companions on. The platforming is good once you get used to the physics of the game. It is very forgiving and you'll hit lots of jumps you thought you might not get. The combat is a simple format, yet even by the end of the game I was not bored with it. It has a rhythm to it, and is enjoyable while not being overly complicated. The sound track is amazing. I encourage you to read past the negative reviews and watch some footage of this game being played. It has become one of my favorite games and sadly we'll probably never see a sequel.

At first I wasn't impressed and expected to forget I ever played it - but eventually ReCore ends up being a fun game with a lot of heart that I'll look back on fondly. It's a slow burn but once you get to the meat of it (primarily running through dungeons for completion) it really picks up. It eventually becomes a surprisingly competent and enjoyable platformer. I have to give props to how the characters were handled in this. Mack, Seth, Duncan, Violet and the main character, Joule, are a huge reason why this game has a lot of heart to it and keep the tone well-balanced in an endearing way. When I got into ReCore I didn’t have my hopes up, considering its reception. I treated it as just something to get off my backlog, and during the opening hours it definitely felt that way, despite being mildly fun sometimes. My time with ReCore can be summed up with a few phases. At first it felt mediocre as expected and didn’t hold my attention. I wasn’t sure if I was gonna be able to see it through to the end. Then I noticed a lot of the characters’ charm – but I was still not entirely into the game itself. ...Then the combat started getting more diverse and interesting. ...Then the platforming got more interesting and challenging. ...Then there was a big difficulty spike which bumped the game from a sleepwalking level of challenge to a Doom Eternal Master Level. - Although to be fair that was entirely on me because I just rushed through the main story and didn’t get a lot of much needed upgrades and level-ups. While It was very crazy it also felt like the game finally came alive. I’m not holding the difficulty spike against the game, as insane as it was, not just because it was my own fault but also because it actually got me thinking a lot more rather than autopiloting my way through absolute breeze of encounters. After several hours of pushing through the main story I suddenly found myself motivated to check out the rest of the game’s dungeons and side content. I’m glad I did, because that’s probably where ReCore shines the brightest. The platforming mostly worked really well and these dungeons really took full advantage of your moveset. Completing all the objectives in said dungeons is where the real meat of the experience lies – because while some of them are pretty easy-going, there are also others that really require mastery of their path as well as knowing how to maximize your jump distance while still remaining accurate. The harder dungeons are not super hardcore or anything but I feel that they have *just* the right amount of difficulty. The game definitely has some objective flaws in it though. For one, you can only hold two corebots at a time, which means that if you walk a while, notice you need another corebot in order to proceed, you can't swap them on the fly, you have to fast travel back to the nearest checkpoint to adjust your loadout. It's not good, but don't worry - it's also not as awful as it sounds. Most of the time checkpoints will be very close to you and you can fast travel from pretty much anywhere very effortlessly - and most of the time you'll have exactly what you need. It's just a shame that it has to occasionally happen anyways. However, the biggest flaw, for me anyways, is that the game is REALLY bright. So much that collectibles in the Overworld tend to blend right into the sand due to how bright it can get. The Shifting Sands' sandstorms which are supposed to limit your vision ironically make it easier to see what's in front of you at times. These flaws didn't detract too much from my experience however. I was still having a good time. I ended up having so much fun that I even bothered to complete the game’s achievements. I ultimately really enjoyed ReCore and I’m definitely gonna look back on my time with it very fondly. I was expecting to quickly discard it as soon as I was done with the main story, but the game’s fun platforming, combat and charming characters kept me staying a while longer. Glad I stuck with it. I know that a sequel will likely never happen - but I hope the people who worked on this know that someone out there enjoyed it enough to wish for a sequel. I salute you like V1-OLT.

For $5 on sale I don't regret it, because I'm a sucker for anthropomorphic robot companions and got about 6-8 hours of fun, but it's not a good game.

First and foremost, ReCore is a platformer, not a looter shooter, despite having both looting and shooting. You'll be jumping around a lot to pick up little cubes, which are technically loot (materials for crafting), but they're so plentiful and inconsequential that they are more like coins in Mario. You will spend 5 minutes trying to get the last hard-to-reach cube in an area not because it's valuable, but because that's just what you do in platformers. The platforming feels good. The ledge grab is generous, and you're allowed, even encouraged to Skyrim your way on top of anything. But the overworld platforming sections are short, and separated by large, sandy tracts of nothing. It's like a gigantic theme park with only a few rides, and you have to queue for a long time just to have a few minutes of fun. The combat is fun, but too simple. Again, it's not really a shooter. The lock on mechanic negates the need for aiming. It's more like a colour-matching puzzle game, except your cursor is a gun. I wish it had more depth, maybe more combos or mechanics around mixed/multi-colours. It feels like a system that could be in a quirky Nintendo RPG. The premise is ok, basic sci-fi plot (with weird similarities to Horizon Zero Dawn which was being developed around the same time), but it goes nowhere for about 2/3rds of the game. You discover the MacGuffin right out the opening, and then just go around collecting more. The final 1/3rd of the story is complete nonsense, and the gameplay switches to a linear dungeon with the most boring platforming and combat sections of the game. The robot companions are my favourite bit. They're made of 4 fully changeable parts each. It's the first time in a game with robots that makes me feel like I'm actually building them with mismatched parts, instead of having a specific skin that is designed to look mismatched. Unfortunately, there are far too many parts with meaningless stat differences, and the crafting/equipping UI is an utter failure, so this cool system becomes a pain to manage. The robots also each have a unique mechanic used for gameplay/traversal. You can only bring 2 at a time, which constantly causes frustrating situations where you discover a point of interest that requires a specific mechanic, have to fast travel to switch robots, then go back to the point to do whatever it is. They could've kept the 2 limit for combat but allowed all the mechanics to be used freely outside combat.

I played this on the Microsoft store when I had the Game Pass trial, possibly one of the most underrated adventure games ever. Very reminiscent of PS2 era action/adventure platformers, this game is essentially Ratchet & Clank meets Metroid Prime. So if you're currently in possesion of a beating heart, you need to play this.

They removed the ability to remap keys in definitive edition. I can't play it with my hand problems. Forcing me to waste *my* time fixing their problems by remapping keys with something like AHK is like me forcing them to come to my house to dig the price of the game out of my couch. They wouldn't stand for it; why should I?

ReCore could've been so much more, It has many fun aspects but is overall very unpolished. + Great platforming + 3 companions each with their own abilities + Metroidvania like exploration • The color matching combat is fun at first but gets repetitive very fast • The story while not horrible is generic and predictable - 90% of the blueprints (which allow you to build parts for your companions) are useless because of how fast you level. - A lot of graphical "glitches" like texture clipping, poorly placed invisible walls and more. I'll leave it at a positive only because of the lack of a sideways thumb option.
