The Roadmap: What's Coming

About the Game

Welcome to Pandemic Express - Zombie Escape! We've played a lot of Zombie Escape-style mods, and wanted to make something standalone, and on a large scale. Up to 20 players spawn in a large world. One of them gets randomly infected, and has to spread the infection turning everyone into zombies. The human players desperately try to escape on a train through an onslaught of what seems like endless zombie hordes.

  • First standalone ‘Zombie Mod’ on a massive scale

  • Unique co-op experience with ad-hoc teams, vehicles, a large open world, and a train

  • Distinctive art style & game atmosphere

We brought the unique ZOMBIE MOD experience into a standalone game

Imagine CS zombie mod infused with the DNA of a large-scale open world shooter, set in a post-soviet ghost town. And trains. We like trains.

Playing as a Human

  • Loot: Find gear in abandoned houses

  • Cooperate: Work with teammates to survive

  • Fight: Kill zombies with anything you have

Playing as a Zombie

  • Resurrect: Respawn instantly at the location of your choosing

  • Hunt: Find the humans hiding around the map

  • Annihilate: Infect everyone!

As someone who has played this game before it was FREE-TO-PLAY, this was a $10 well spent. I got to make so many fun memories for the last two years, and surprisingly this game is NOT impossible to play. The player-base is still fairly active, and there's newer players on the leader-board. A few tips I would like to pass out... When in a lobby with five or more players, ALWAYS press enter on your keyboard and type !vote start If the vote has already started, and you don't want to wait 30 minutes for 7 players to show up, then press enter, and type !yes. (Exclamation mark, yes) I would also suggest sending friend requests to others that want to play, that way you can coordinate the best time to join. Usually, there's most players during the weekend, so try hopping on during that time. IF there isn't anyone, then invite your friends to play!

The ghost of this game keeps taunting me with the second-highest playtime in my library, which should speak to how fun it was before it got abandoned, mostly thanks to the impressively exciting movement. Everyone gets a powerful slide and double jumps, and every gun can be used to "rocket jump", it's just a joy. But honestly, even not accounting for the game currently being a rotting corpse, it's got a major design flaw: playing as a rotting corpse is not nearly as fun. While the humans are busy doing their best bullet-fueled helicopter impression (or using actual helicopters), you're stuck with limited movement and the weirdest set of abilities designed by man: The default zombie gets a grab, which is the most useful zombie ability, but is also incredibly annoying to fight. One of those boiz grabs you, get ready to be thrown in the nearest river or cramped corner, where you'll be trapped while the zombies surround you like piranhas and keep throwing you further. The exploding zombie does pitiful damage, relying on humans killing it to set off an explosion. I swear, this one just exists to be shot by newer players and take whoever happens to be standing nearby with it. I don't blame the newbies for this, but I would also not recommend designing something with the explicit purpose of making veterans hate new players for being a detriment, you know? The mimic is... a zombie that exists. It acts as the TF2's spy, fooling humans into thinking it's one of them, but you don't really get anything for successfully infiltrating enemy ranks. You either get one low-damage melee hit in before immediately getting pelted to shreds, or plant a bomb in a choke before humans arrive, which will get shot from a distance by any player with functioning eyes. At least you can goof around with it by constantly dying and respawning, dropping a gun on every death to fill the map with pickups. Just to be clear, this isn't about the zombies being "overpowered", or "underpowered", it's a case of their playstyles being way less fun and expressive than the humans'. As a human, you'll constantly be improving at using your guns for both shooting and locomotion. As a zombie, you'll improve by getting better at abusing the "chuck 'em in the river" tactic, which just isn't fun for everyone. Oh, but the team voice chat lets the entire zombie team shout "ONE OF US" in unison to greet someone who's just been converted, so 11/10, perfect game

It's really "meh" and definitely feels like a wacky mod rather than a standalone. You start in a locked with 6(ish) other people. At a minimum, 2 will be spamming the in-game voice commands and the other 2 will be mimicking that spam with their real person voice. There will probably be a twitch streamer trying their hardest to be funny to their 2 viewers. The developers seem to know this kind of stuff and made it incredibly easy to mute everybody. After 5-10 minutes of waiting, the game will have 15 or so people to play with (max is 30) and a 3 minute timer begins. After those 3 minutes, one person in that room becomes a zombie and tries to infect the others by killing them. This is when the survivors have to run out and loot battle-royale style to get some gear then head to the train to defend it, and where the gameplay loop is. Get on the train, defend train from player-controlled zombies, train stops at checkpoints for you to heal and get ammo, then eventually the train escapes. At its core, it just doesn't feel good. Health is displayed Legend of Zelda style with hearts, 3 to be precise. Survivors can take 3 hits, one goes away every time you're hit, that makes sense. Zombies can get shot a lot, and then the 3 hearts start flashing? Why not just a health bar? Shooting mechanics are weird. Shooting has knockback, and a LOT of it. In fact, everything has insane amounts of knockback. An unarmed punch will send another player 5 feet into the air. There's so much that if you look at the ground and shoot with any gun, you will jump high into the air. Knocking back zombies seems to be the main point of the weapons and finally killing them is more like an added bonus; it takes a lot. I can see why that'd add its own unique thing, but the knockback feels too weird for me to like. Friendly fire doesn't do damage but it will knock you around. Guns are simple. There are several different types: a revolver, SMG, shotgun, rifle, automatic rifle, some others I think? They have a basic rarity system from 1-3 stars and different colors. I guess that changes damage and I think magazine capacity. Nothing very flashy or exciting but nothing really expected either. Nothing is explained in the game, and the "warm-up" mode is just the game with no one else in it from what I can tell. The train itself is a headache. It's very easy to get knocked off since you have to be on TOP on the train and the aforementioned knockback. Despite there being a double jump in the game, I still have to run to the rear of the train where it's lower to get back on. If there's a ladder or something, everyone I was playing with missed it. Zombie play is actually not bad. The bullet knockbacks are annoying, but you can take enough hits and strafe enough where one zombie can get a kill pretty easy. Zombie also get a throw, where they can throw survivors pretty far distances. This is great for throwing people off the train or into your other zombie friends, but again it just feels weird to both throw someone and be thrown. There are two unique zombies currently, one that explodes when it dies, and one that can turn invisible. Most people use the exploding one since it'll kill instantly and the blast wave will knock people all around. You unlock the special classes by playing as zombies for a while until your "special" charges, then when you respawn you pick one of the two. It feels like the current game may favor zombies a bit. Movement as a whole doesn't feel good at all. it feels kind of like an air hockey puck where you're very hover-y and any hit sends you flying all over the place. It's all very clunky and doesn't feel right. It's possible to get knocked high enough in the air for ten seconds of air time, and it's more annoying then cool since it happens so frequently. Zombies will be waiting for you when you land since moving in midair is either sluggish or not actually a thing, haven't really figured that out. Overall the main gameplay just doesn't feel very good, ignoring everything that's just because "early-access". If you like wild, bounce-all-over-the-place physics you'll probably enjoy it, it's kind of fun in its own way but I found it more annoying than anything. The main mechanics of the game just didn't work for me, despite how fun the concept sounded. I refunded the game.

8/10 game for the following reasons: PROS: -Very fun, to be both human and zombie. -zombie classes very fun to use. -community isnt toxic (yet). -game pace is good. CONS: Zombies are OP. I have played many hours and probably well over 50 individual games by now and *not once* have the humans won. This is for the following reasons: -bomber zombies are OP af. the range on those things is ridiculous. they will one shot everyone within a 10m range on that train. even if you manage to collectively shoot them away ( a loooooooooong ass way away) they will still do damage to you so that one more hit will kill you.# -Zombies in general have shit tonnes of health, you can pump a full clip of the highest tier weapons into their asses and they will not go down. -Zombies are fast as fuck. they will catch you, end of. -The barrels at the zombies spawn points are waaaay to overpowered. there's 6 of them and they respawn quickly so you just get zombies chucking these things at the train over and over again in a neverending onslaught throwing everyone off the train, making it impossible to stay as a group and keep the train moving, let alone keep the bombers off everyone. In my opinion, I would greatly nerf these barrels, and dont make them respawn. Their range is ridiculous too, you could be 10 m from a barrel and it will still fling you 200m away from the train. -weapons do not do enough damage (as stated before). -humans cant swim pretty much at all. (they can, but super slow and zombies are like frickin sharks, they *will* catch you and you can't shoot them back). -humans can't jump out of the water sometimes if its a river bank for example, you just get stuck in a die for the point above's reasons. -parts of the UI obscure the screen. Yes, make notifications noticeable by making them huge but don't put them right in front of the crosshair, how are we meant to see zombies when all we can see is "crate opening" or "all aboard". CONCLUSION: Overall a very fun game. 10/10 will play again, but don't expect to *ever* win as a human in the games current state. must admit tho, being a phantom is very fun.

I really wanted this game to be as good as its concept. Unsatisfying is the word I keep coming back to as I think about my experience with this game thus far: unsatisfying movement, unsatisfying gunplay, and unsatisfying abilities.
Movement:
To start, the movement is way too floaty for my taste, and the game's combat is focused on knockback, which is an inherently unsatisfying mechanic (just look at Overwatch's annoying control hero meta and how they got nerfed to make the game fun again). Constantly taking control away from the player and having them fly around just isn't fun. There are also vehicles, which can insta-kill zombies by running them over, but they make tons of noise, have very limited fuel, turn like yachts, and are quite prone to flipping over.
Humans:
The guns operate on a tiered system, with each weapon having a type (shotgun, pistol, assault rifle, rocket launcher) and a level (1-4). Higher levels do more damage, but each weapon type will always do the same knockback. There's ADS, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Most weapons don't have much punch to them (killing zombies is hard), but do crazy knockback, sending zombies flying 50 meters away. This lends the combat to be more about knocking back enemies to waste their time, rather than being about eliminating them, as mentioned earlier.
Zombies:
As the zombie, you have a melee attack and a special ability depending on which class you are. You start off as a basic zombie class which can grab enemies, and slowly charge up to becoming one of two special zombies: the Bomber, or the Phantom. The Bomber explodes on death and can trigger an explosion countdown before running into clusters of humans. The Phantom can turn invisible, but that's pretty much worthless since you have to hit someone three times to kill them.
Gameplay:
A typical round starts with all players locked in a box. Once the lobby has been filled, a timer starts to give you time to spread out and hide; when the timer ends, one player becomes the zombie and tries to kill as many people as they can before the gates open. After that, the remaining humans flood out into the wilderness to scavenge weapons from buildings and start the train so they can start moving toward the escape. After a short period an "airdrop" (several of these are underground) also spawns, which contains a large cache of powerful weapons to tip the balance in the humans' favour. This must be defended for a short while before it can be looted. Once these weapons have been secured (or not) the focus shifts to pushing the train to the end of the track. This is meant to be the highlight of the game, but is honestly its most boring part. The train is open and exposed, and if the players have their powerful weapons they can continually knock back the growing zombie horde, which is interspersed with bombers to discourage clustering. As a zombie, you often spawn several hundred meters away from the train and have to waste time running across the map to get back into the action.
Potential Changes:
I enjoy the concept of this game quite a bit, and I think that with a lot of polish and some mechanic reworking, Pandemic Express will be able to deliver on that. Here are a few changes that I think would make the game a bit more satisfying to play:

Shorten the Train Ride- The train ride is unfortunately the least fun part of Pandemic Express. The tension of running from zombies while you scavenge for weapons is much more fun, and there's far too little of it in the game since the train starts moving very early in the round. Having to scavenge for parts to fix the train before you can start it and then shortening the length of the train ride could be fun.
Flatten or Remove Weapon Levels- As the game stands, the middle weapon levels are kind of pointless; humans will generally acquire powerful weapons quite early to replace whatever cheap thing they grabbed initially. To counter this, maybe try:
Multiple, Smaller, Airdrops- The airdrop defense is the other part of the game I enjoyed a lot. Having multiple airdrops to defend would spread out the zombies a bit, and keep the game feeling a bit more tense for the humans since they'll only have a few powerful weapons, rather than everyone gearing up once you open it.
Rebalance Health, Ammo, and Knockback- These three are intimately tied together, so I'm throwing them in as one category. Zombies should have less health, and knockback should be reduced to make up for that. Shotguns should stay high knockback as their special property, but pistols and ARs should be more focused on dealing damage and do minimal knockback. Currently, a short spray from the AR will send a zombie flying over the nearest hill. Once the humans get decent guns, they'll start mowing down zombies left and right, but they should start to run out of ammo. Right now there's just way too many bullets for guns. The zombies respawning should make the train defense a war of attrition, with the humans gradually running out of ammo and having to resort to more improvised tactics.
Add Melee Weapons- As the humans run low on ammo, they should be forced to resort to more dangerous melee combat to survive. Melee weapons that they can scavenge will allow them to be more powerful up close, but keep them helpless during the initial rush when they only have their fists.
Add a Zombie Leader- The Leader's ability is that while he's alive, zombies will be able to spawn much closer to the train. There can only be one leader at a time, and he has a glowing beacon on him to indicate that he should be the primary target.

TL;DR:
The game has promise, but its current iteration is pretty rough, and needs to take a closer look at its mechanics to make them more fun.

At first glance it may seem that Pandemic Express is your cookie cutter zombie game, but it is far from that. I originally bought the game because of the unique art-style but really fell in love with the movement you can achieve in this game. ~PROS Unique skill movement that allows you to travel upwards of 100m in a second. Games take a few seconds to find Despite only having one mode, every game feels slightly unique with how the game unfolds Gorgeous art-style Active developments Human to zombie win ratio is not 50/50 which is believe is a good thing, really making you work hard for your human wins ~CONS Lower tier weapons are rather useless and you really need to get airdrop weapons to stand a chance Bomber zombies are over-tuned and result in almost every human death. You're stuck in the spawn with the first zombie and it can snowball rather quickly It is Early Access, so it is far from 'perfect' but the developers do seem to care about the continuous improvement of the game and I cannot wait to see what it has installed for the future.

Good game......right up until they introduced a respawn timer for zombies What was once a fast-paced edge-of-your-seat thrill-ride is now a cluster fuck of standing around waiting Don't bother until they fuck it right off: seems like a small issue, right up until you're immediately killed every time you finish your 15+ second respawn timer

This game is one of my favorites of all time, but until the developers create a mechanic to stop people from leaving after they've died & become zombies, I can't recommend this game. I've been in situations where I was the first to turn and I had converted 5-6 people personally, looking on the map and only seeing 2 other zombie team mates, the times where this doesn't happen are the exception, something needs to be done asap.
