Ok so basically a watered down Prince of Persia with Arkham Asylum style combat plus am monkey. Try it out, it's pretty fun. Definitely check out the PC Gaming Wiki article tho, 'cause this requires some minor config file tweaking to get the shadows and resolution looking fine in Windows 10/11. There's also a Steam Guide somewhere if you're lazy (you are).

Playing this for the first time in 2017 made me realise how there are still such hidden gems around on Steam. Enslaved encompasses a simple yet addictive hack n slash combat system mixed with plenty of fun climbing scenes, set in a post apocalyptic world whilst telling a MINDBLOWING story (especially the ending). WOW! Enslaved has great believable and likeable characters whom show clear character deveopment with each having a clear skill set which is used throughout the story to work together to overcome bosses and so on. Having a heavy focus on story telling worked out great for this game and is really what made it the masterpiece that it is, however, there are A LOT of short cut scenes scattered throughout the entire game and I recognise that many players who want to jump / smash their way through the game will not appreciate... BUT... for those who see adventure games as an excellent way to tell a story as well as being immersed in the gaming culture it brings then this game is 100% for you! I must admit, I am the type of gamer to usually stray away from these older titles, being a bit dubious of graphics, controls and so forth, however Enslaved has aged beautifully and shouldn't be judged by its release date. It should appeal to a broad range of people and I am saddened I had not heard of this gem until recently recommended by a friend. In short, if you enjoy action/adventure games with a great immersive story and this game isn't in your library, then go purchase this right now! Excellent game if you are after a good single player experience. Gameplay is linear but fun, the game world looks beautiful. Interesting story (tho I had some subjective issues with it) and character development with great voice acting!
The Short Version:
Almost going completely under my radar, Enslaved ended up surprising me immensely. It has an intriguing narrative, featuring a small but well-written cast of characters, with a highly entertaining set of gameplay mechanics that come together to make it a stand-out title. There’s a high level of polish that’s consistent in almost every aspect of the game. It’s just a shame that this quality is dragged down by the ridiculously poor camera controls. That being said, if you can persevere through that obstacle, there’s a hidden gem that’s worth your money.

[th]
Pros:
[/th] [th]
Cons:
[/th]

-Remarkable storytelling -Interesting and likeable characters -Great voice acting -Superb combat system -Smooth parkour mechanics -Intricately crafted levels -Atrociously intrusive camera

My Rating

8.5/10 - Brilliant

Journey to the West...
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is a third-person, action-adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic world overridden with machines. You play as Monkey, a brutish yet athletic survivor whose appearance is heavily inspired by Sun Wukong, a mythical figure from the Chinese novel, ‘Journey to the West’, the story of which Enslaved is a reinterpretation of. Monkey starts off as a prisoner aboard a slave ship, but it doesn’t take long for things to go wrong. At some point, the aircraft sustains damage and is sent on a downwards collision course. The opening chapter consists of you fighting your way off the vessel. During your escape, you meet Trip, a young woman and fellow inmate who's dead set on escaping on her own. To her dismay, you tag along, desperately trying to keep up with her. The two don’t get on well at first. After the crash, you learn that Trip has hacked into Monkey’s headband, an artifact forcibly placed on him by the slavers, allowing her to keep a leash on him. After being separated from her tribe hundreds of miles away, she enlists his help in reuniting her with her family. Once that task is complete, he will be free. Understandably, their relationship begins tense, but as they travel across various biomes, from barren wastelands, filled with dilapidated shacks and overgrown cityscapes riddled with danger, to scrap yards littered with deadly robots, they learn to trust and rely on one another. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2571285235 Just like their connection improves over the course of the game, so do they as characters. Despite being a lone wolf for most of his life, Monkey begins to see the values of working together to thrive in a hellish world. You see Trip mature and become more confident and assertive with her actions. Their development is exceptional, and it’s one of the elements that make the story all the more memorable. The narrative as a whole is exceptionally well-written. It’s a dark journey that provides a whole range of emotions while also containing light-hearted scenes that offer a break from all the grit — something that is a testament to how high the quality of writing is. Andy Serkis and Lindsey Shaw’s wonderful performances as Monkey and Trip are also worthy of recognition.
The Camera that Fights Back...
Unfortunately, one of Enslaved’s most detrimental issues is noticeable almost immediately, and that’s the incredibly poor camera. It wasn’t something I could get used to, as it interfered with almost every aspect of the gameplay. The problems it causes all stem from the clunky and unresponsive nature of the controls. To provide more detail, you rotate the camera with your mouse like any other game in the genre. However, it will also move depending on which direction your character is running. If you want to go left, it’ll rotate in accordance to that. At first, this might not sound so bad, but as you become exposed to new abilities and new mechanics, it’ll become more difficult to manage. Combat is one of the worst-hit areas due to the fact that you move around a lot. Since there’s no lock-on, your character attacks the enemy closest to them, rendering mouse input useless. This also means that the camera moves with you, so if you want to aim for another robot, you’ll have to move far enough away from your previous target to do so. If you’re trying to move both the camera and the character at the same time whilst engaged, you’ll have a camera that doesn’t know what to do. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2571282602 Even something simple like going from one part of a level to another can end up being more irritating than it should be. The camera often orientates itself towards the way you’re meant to go, rather than the place you want to move to, making some paths difficult to navigate, especially if you’re after the collectables. It’s overly interfering and detracts from the immersion. It’s a shame that your window into the disturbingly beautiful world of Enslaved is so restrictive because there’s a lot to see and be in awe of. Some of the set pieces are incredible to look at, and there is such a high attention to detail that’s squandered by an unrelentingly obtrusive system.
Surviving the Robotic Apocalypse...
When the camera isn’t being an intrusive pain in the backside, there is a lot to praise about the gameplay mechanics. Both of the main characters possess a unique range of skills that make them a formidable pair. Monkey uses his strength and flexibility to fight off enemies and open up previously closed pathways, while Trip uses her technical expertise to unlock security doors, access terminals, and anything else that requires more brains than brawn. Although you’ll only play as Monkey, you’re able to issue commands to Trip, depending on the situation. Need to sneak past a couple of armed turrets? Ask her to create a holographic distraction. Want to power up a mechanism that’ll trigger a reaction? Get her to a computer. Not every scenario requires an all-out fight, and it’s through these orders that a safer approach can be made. It adds more depth to the gameplay and it’s designed rather well. She isn’t immortal though, and should your stealth attempts fail, you will have to defend her. During those instances where you're forced into a confrontation, you're armed with a staff that has both melee and ranged capabilities. This weapon can unleash hell on your enemies, and can be improved even further through the upgrade system, allowing for new moves to be unlocked, such as countering and stun attacks. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2571280026 Despite the camera’s intrusions, the system as a whole is fantastic. Attacks have weight and feel impactful while being able to invest in upgrades makes the game feel refreshing, and engagements with opponents feel rewarding. The variety of moves and the challenging but fair difficulty of the AI boost the combat’s intensity further. Last but not least is the parkour system, which is also terrific. It’s easy to utilise, and transitioning from one height to another is incredibly smooth. The quality of the animations is remarkable, and the fact that it all came together with no noticeable bugs whatsoever is astonishing. Overall, I don’t have any trouble in recommending Enslaved. It’s a highly entertaining experience, containing a gripping narrative alongside well-polished and engaging gameplay mechanics. If it weren’t for the awful camera, my rating of it would be even higher. I cannot recommend this game highly enough. Excellent voice acting, engaging characters, obscenely fun gameplay and platforming, plays well on keyboard or with 360 controller. All around a wonderful game. Seriously the writing and delivery is unlike anything you see very often in gaming, Just watch this cutscene.. http://enslaved.wikia.com/wiki/File:Enslaved_Odyssey_to_the_West_Cut-Scene_VIdeo Worth every penny.

A solid action adventure game based on tactical combat and environmental puzzles. The narrative is gripping, the characters compelling, and though the story is linear, it takes place in an immersive, beautifully realized world. The voice acting is especially superb. Though there aren't many characters in the game, the actors make them feel rounded and real. Also astounding is the main character's animation: truly satisfying as he fluidly jumps and rolls and slinks up and down walls. This is actually two games in one! In addition to the main story, there is an extra game based on one of the characters, offering a different style of stealth-based combat and a more lighthearted, humorous narrative. This extra game is surprisingly long and comprehensive. Just to nitpick, I'll point out that ENSLAVED has a few minor weaknesses. Combat on “normal” difficulty can be too easy, and at times feels repetitive and grindy. There is a skill upgrade system based on collecting experience orbs, and though it's satisfying to gobble them up, there are just far too many in the game (sometimes you might feel like you're playing Pac-Man). Generally, the game could have been better with more variety: more characters, more types of enemies, more ways to earn skill points. Also, controls can be a bit wonky. When you're just exploring an area and rolling around when you want to jump, it's annoying. But in the middle of combat it can be frustrating to die because your character didn't do what you thought it should do. These problems are not very serious and did not keep me from thoroughly enjoying the game. I strongly recommend it for fans of action adventure!

I was kind of surprised honestly, because I was expecting more or less just another 3rd person hack and slash with platforming elements which I might get bored of, and although it doesn't do anything new, it pulls off what it does have very well and kept me playing till the end. In short, you find yourself in a post-apocalyptic world, having just escaped one of the mech ships where you were kept as a slave. The main character, Monkey, is incredibly agile and proficient at climbing stuff, in addition to wielding a staff with deadly skills to take down hostile mechs. He teams up with an attractive hacker girl, Trip, who keeps him under her control via a headband at first and later becomes more of an ally. Perhaps the most alluring part of the gameplay are the constantly changing challenges and puzzles, most of which involve working together with your NPC ally. For example, some sections require you to tell Trip when to activate a decoy hologram in order to distract enemy turrets and allow you to get closer for a takedown. Then there are also sections where you use your staff as a shooting weapon to engage in long-range fights, and also sections where you use a hover pad called cloud to solve environmental puzzles or even fight a boss. Although the overall game was fun, I do think the first half of it felt stronger and more focused. There was more variety of things in that, and also better looking environments in my opinion. A huge post-apocalyptic city taken over by plant life is just a more interesting place to explore than inside of enormous factories which comprise most of the second half of the game. At the very least the game didn't overstay its welcome and none of it felt padded. Only one type of challenge irked me greatly, and that's those blasted landmines. Most of the time you die to them because the area of their blast effect is not clear, so you end up getting caught out when you're nowhere near the damn things. And it's insta-kill too. Gladly they're only in two parts of the game and hence only a minor irritation. Visuals are really beautiful. Both as far as character designs and also most of the setting, environments, and style. Voice acting also great. And everything is rather straight-forward and intuitive, ranging from climbing and ending with combat. Getting a chance to level up some skills and attributes is also a nice addition. All 3 of the main characters were quite interesting, and the story, although in the background most of the time, was good enough to keep things going along. Won't spoil anything, but the conclusion was rather surprising, almost out of the blue and unexpected, but I suppose it made the game end with a punch. In general, an enjoyable game on all fronts and one of the better 3rd person action adventure games I've played. Well worth getting, especially if it's on sale. Highly advised to play with a gamepad.

A diamond in the rough right here. Good story, great graphics (holds up well today) good mechanics and great writing. Like the story. Love the characters. Great atmosphere. The fighting and climbing mechanics are good, but could be polished up a bit. Only small problems i had was i get stuck on things trying to dodge/move. There are a couple bugs where i had to restart the last checkpoint because i got stuck or disappeared. The camera is a bit janky in certain spots. Never had a problem with it during fighting, but some climbing and small corridors it is a bit rough. The only thing i do not like about this game is the ending is pretty abrupt. No real ending arc for the characters and that sucks. There was 2 threads to close and neither were touched. If all this was cleaned up and had a better ending, this game could be great. With all that said, this is a very good game. Fun mechanics (kinda Darksiders mixed with Uncharted). Great level design with good platforming and puzzles. New York and Earth have a great atmosphere and the game has held up well over the last 10 years (I originally played this on PS3). Good story (loosely based on the novel), but i fell in love with the characters. The writing and story bring all 3 of them out and make you root for them. The DLC is fun but a LOT harder than the main story. It is rough, but I enjoyed that story as well as playing as the pork (you will understand when you play). I can't recommend this game enough. If you get it cheap, it is a bargain. If you pay full price, it still is a bargain! Would love a remake and possibly a prequel/sequel if they can make it work (the ending was abrupt so idk). Great game!

ENSLAVED: Odyssey to the West was sitting in my library for at least 2 years and I feel bad for not giving it a chance before. It's a game set in a post-apocalyptic world which is full Mechs, the main opposing forces of the game. Originally, they were constructed for a war, but after it ended they continued to follow their programming, to hunt down and execute any remaining humans or enslave them. Although it may seem like a cliché at first, the storyline is quite interesting. After escaping from a slave ship, a girl, who is as innocent as you are enslaves you using a "slave band" in order to return to her tribe safely with your help. As expected, things don't go as planned and it ends with an unpredictable scene. Gameplay is quite simple, yet fun. There are 4 main things you can do: beating up or shooting Mechs using your staff, surfing with Cloud, and most importantly, parkour. Parkour part is exteremely simple. You can make zero mistakes, the character will automatically grab anything you jump for. Combat has not much variety, thus, it becomes repetitive after a while even if you purchase upgrades. You basically end up just like you started except for some small changes. Cloud part is interesting and fun. It's basically a high-tech hoverboard which you can use to get around much faster. Apart from the main game, there's a DLC called "Pigsy's Perfect 10" that changes the rules completely. You don't play as the Monkey this time and since Pigsy's weapon of choice is not a close ranged one, game mechanics are very different than the base game. It's fun and a decent DLC, though! I gotta say, game has some amazing cutscenes and a wonderful sense of humour. If you're looking for something to entertain yourself for a good amount of time, I'd say grab this one during a sale. You won't regret it!
