  [h1]Cheat Against the Impossible Danmaku![/h1] I put 60+ hours in non-Steam version. Its probably my favorite Touhou spin-off Unlike main Touhou games, this one is the pure spell card challenge. There is no stages or non-spells or consecutive fights, your goal is to simply clear as many of these 75 brutal spell cards as you can. Any scene can be infinitely retried with no penalty, so keep trying and you'll do it! Eventually. Just don't be like Marisa, in danmaku using your head isn't less important than raw firepower. As the title of the game implies, spell cards here are pretty hard. Certain scenes can take thousands attempts to capture. But! Unlike other spell card challenges, in ISC you can cheat! Our protagonist Seija Kijin has access to 9 cheat items and she isn't afraid to use them. If you can't do it fairly, the defeat the enemy with the power of temporal invulnerability, bullet removal, teleportation, extra lives or just by smacking them in the head with a giant plastic hammer! Cheat items make the game easy enough even for absolute beginners to pick up and enjoy. But! The ultimate goal of ISC is to clear all 75 scenes w/o using these cheat items. To do it fairly.   It´s so hard that ZUN needed to implement cheats in the game because otherwise even the tutorial would be almost unbeatable. Even with cheats, it is far away from a walk in the park. On the other hand, clearing a single spell card without using any cheat items at the nth try gives a feeling of satisfaction, awesomeness and "pride and accomplishment" that only very few video games can offer nowadays. Buy at your own risk, but buy it.

  Decided to buy the Hakurei Kannushi some beer after supporting Kanako's black market for a bit too long. Also this is the best Touhou game (NOT Amanojaku speech).

  Imagine that scene from Oldboy where the main character rips a dude's tooth out with a hammer. Now imagine you're that dude getting his tooth ripped out with a hammer. Now imagine the entire movie was just that scene for 90 minutes. Now you have a pretty good idea of what playing this game is like.

  The standalone version of this game runs at 60 FPS. The steam version quickly gets framedrops. (In fact, this seems to be the case for all Team Shanghai Alice engine games on Steam. Buyer beware!) Buy it to support ZUN, but you may want to use a standalone version if you get the problems I had with it.

  This is the best Touhou shoot 'em up, puzzle-style, normal, or anything. It's easily my favorite of the bunch - I've played it plenty outside of Steam, and know what I'm getting into here. It rules. The attack patterns are all really interesting, uniquely difficult, and the cheat items are satisfying to use. And while incredibly hard, it is possible to beat the entire game without using the cheat items. It's super fair, in its own weird, unfair way.

  As someone who is not at all into Touhou games, it's difficult to argue that Danmaku Amanojaku - Impossible Spell Card (ISC) is the best game in the entire series - because as someone who dislikes Touhou games, of course it would be, but I certainly won't be able to convince Touhou fans that that is the case. However, I may be able to convince others like me that this is a worthwhile experience in spite of its origins. It will probably appeal to fans of "puzzle shooters" like Ikaruga or Radiant Silvergun more than traditional Touhou games. Essentially, ISC is a puzzle game (some amount of RNG notwithstanding). The player is presented with a series of self-contained obstacles and given a variety of tools to overcome said obstacles progressively, as he beats stages he unlocks more stages and tools, he is then free to repeat previous stages with the new tools, which the game encourages via upgrading tools and unlocking achievements. Due to this new structure, stages aren't very long, but they discard all the cruft of sending a bunch of copy pasted fairies at you on an empty infinite-scrolling screen and makes having to replay stages absolutely painless. Quality over quantity. ZUN mentions in his afterword that (at the time) 'this game required the most playtesting time during its development' and I think that is self-evident and comes across in the end product. Spell cards are intricately designed, tools are all varied and (mostly) useful in different ways, and despite the tough difficulty (the curve of which isn't perfect, but thankfully one only needs to complete a handful of stages to unlock the next set) it is still possible to beat levels without using tools despite the game's subtitle - thematically appropriate in regards to the main character's ability to turn anything over. It's not perfect, just barely missing that mark, and for a one-man job that is an incredible feat.
