You probably heard the theory that we live inside a computer simulation.

I wanted to create a big sandbox game in which you can create your own simulations, change the laws of physics, design mechanisms, create A-Life worlds and inhabit them with living beings, experiment with evolution and AI.

SST is a particle simulator that uses a graphics card as a supercomputer to calculate physics. The more powerful the graphics card, the greater the gameplay!

The building block of all worlds is an atom. Atoms can have links, thus producing spatial structures.

The physical properties of materials can vary over a wide range, allowing the simulation of gases, liquids, soft and solid bodies, various chemical processes and states of matter.

Perhaps even creating a virtual life!

For example, the “Protobiome” simulation is a living virtual world with light, water, earth, growing plants and dwelling creatures, guided by evolutionary genetics.

ATTENTION!

The game is in the deep Early Access state. It may be unstable. It may also completely fail to run on your system.

The game had initially been developed for NVIDIA cards. Therefore, the project works most optimally and efficiently on modern NVIDIA GPUs using CUDA. However, I'm willing to support the widest possible range of gaming systems. This is why the game also has an OpenCL port, so it can run on most AMD graphics cards as well.

It is really important that you have a recent version of the video driver installed. In case of problems running the game, first of all, please, try to update the video card driver!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND to try the free demo version of the game before buying the Early Access version. This will let you make sure the game works well on your system!

Overall a good start for a particle sim and successor for the somewhat dying 'The Powder Toy' and dead OECake. In its current state, SST is pretty OECake soft-body physics paired with forces (gravity) and heat/energy simulation like The Powder Toy. However, unlike these two, this engine somehow pulls off simulating hundreds of thousands of particles with ease, while OECake started to struggle after a just a few thousand. (CUDA support?) I am very impressed with the implementation of solid objects, allowing them to either be solid yet movable (such as a rock) or solid yet static (like a brick wall). This is something that neither of the previous sims could do just right.

Recommendations
-Viewmodel: >More camera options, such as selected particle tracking and limiting the zoom to the max "zoomed out" area of the simulation (not allowing infinite zoom-out) >Easier shader options/selection such as that of TPT, where one can select between different shaders on the fly (like how the atom material shows velocity by color already) >Visible borders around the simulation boundaries, so you don't have to literally throw things at a wall to see where the edges are. -GUI: >Please add a material menu. This is also something like TPT's implementation, with the exception of letting users save/delete materials to said menu for later use. It would be nice to use materials in other saves. >Adding forces such as gravity to a level and altering its properties would also be nice through an easy to use menu. >A blank template level would be much appreciated >A macro/control setting menu would also be nice, allowing users to bind any key to a preset list of functions or any property/function that is not standard. (Especially useful for binding timestepping to chevron keys and spacebar to pause!) -Interaction: >The Drag tool should at least have an option somewhere to apply a velocity to the particles it is dragging. No matter how hard you try to fling something currently, it will just be dropped still when released. >Not sure if this is already possible, but a user-controlled material would be a bonus but not essential (such as to move around a simulation with the keyboard)

Gamebreaking Bugs
-VRAM problems are currently the biggest source of crashes, especially when many particle collisions are happening simultaneously. I would understand this crashing if I had a low-end card with little memory, but the simulator currently crashes at around 4-5GB usage despite having an 11GB 1080Ti on 64-bit Windows. I am able to use all of the card's memory in other programs, so I am not quite sure what is going on here.

Overall, I would give this a hopeful 6/10 for its current Early Access state and the fact that a sim like this is finally in development.

There is literally nothing more that I would like to do than give this a positive review. The concept is absolutely awesome and hes done a good job developing it. But the game is just too ealry for me to reccommend it for 15 dollars. It crashes too often and its just too early for that much money. There also hasnt been an update in a bit. I will be refunding this but I will surely come back one day if it is continued to be developed later.

Great fun! The most impressive pixel sandbox game ive played and its still in EA but still well worth a go if you like these types of games/ simulations! :)

I have to be very honest and blunt: Do not buy this unless you want to support the developer and believe that they will carry through with this project, but that money can support other developers just the same who have offered more. In any case, good job dev, keep working on it, but for me right now, I'm refunding it because I will never touch it in its current state. If you are looking for a game, or at least something that would fill in the empty Falling Sand Game genre on Steam, this is not a game nor is it enjoyable and this is coming from someone who spent thousands of hours in the late 2000s playing the Falling Sand Game and its spinoffs (we had mods where you could even perform cartoon surgery, that's how advanced that stuff was). If you want a game like this, with actual plugins and mod support, then get the more advanced free Powder Toy game instead. If Space Simulation Toolkit was on another platform that sold toolkits, software, and technology demos, then I would definitely recommend it because the dev unilaterally claims it's a highly advanced simulator. Even if I could not validate the dev's grandiose claims and take that claim at face value (I hope they're not lying because it would be far worse), the interface is bare-bones without any hint or tooltips as to what does what. Even after taking the time to read the unfinished in-game tutorial pages that gush over the awesomeness of simulations in this day and age, I still did not know what 95% of the nitty-gritty sliders do. You still want to know what the gameplay is like? Well, I clicked and I made blobs. The blobs then did other stuff. Then I ran out of options. I checked the other scenarios, and hoped for something, but there was nothing to do, interact with, or play with. You just drop colored particles on more particles without any context whatsoever. In other Falling Sand Game-type games, you add wood, you burn it with fire, you collect the ashes in a steel "cup", combine it with sand, heat up the steel container, and you now have glass. This has none of that. I do not know what this is beyond what the dev claims it is or could be, but I have no way to validate those claims nor visualize them. - The number of materials and elements that you can deploy is even more limited than the first iteration of Falling Sand Game. - In terms of the mechanics, I do not understand how fire particles were slowly lifting up and floating earth particles or what was going on. You would be hard-pressed to label this as a game and you will most certainly enter an argument over "but what IS a game anyway" field, and even then I highly doubt you would enjoy the experience of having accessed this modern-day fishbowl screensaver.

Far too expensive for a cool concept test. Wait for discount or more content but 100% buy if that happens
