i didn't know it has mimics and i tried to grab a health potion and it sprouted teeth and killed me, my trust has been betrayed, how dare you edit after playing for 2 more hours: the mimics continue to kill me, they appear only when I am most desperate for a health potion. they haunt my dreams, stop laughing at my pain you ghouls

It's tight. The new episode is worth the price of admission alone. This comes packaged with a custom version of GZDoom with graphical default settings (Vintage, Vintage+, Retro, Modern, and Modern+) that let you quickly and easily get the game looking as crunchy or smooth as you want with hot swap keys for each mode bound to the F8-F12 keys. I'm usually not a fan of GZDoom for vanilla style play, but these convenient default video settings make that something of a non-issue. The new lighting effects only available with GZDoom are wonderfully atmospheric, tasteful, and compliment enemy sprites excellently.

Highly recommended. Excellent Doom total conversion WAD with a unique setting, monsters, and weapons. Comes with easy to use GZDoom presets for your preferred visual style. If you love Doom/Heretic/Hexen you will love this.

REKKR gives an authentic 90s experiences that absolutely doesn't feel out of place with the likes of Hexen, Heretic, and of course, DOOM. Think of REKKR as Viking DOOM. Having played this before the Steam release, I can tell you this was an instant buy! The weapons feel balanced and the maps are fun and challenging with plenty of interlinking areas. The enemies feel familar to what you're likely used to with DOOM but still feel fresh due to them having their own unique abilities. I especially love the mimics and the floating eyeballs, as they all bring something fun to the gameplay. So far, I haven't noticed many bugs but from what I've seen, the death messages don't display the correct enemy that killed you, as well as some sounds cutting off or not playing at all. And I also wish I could customise the message display to be a little bigger and have it to the right of the screen like classic DOOM. Besides that, the overall rating for this game hasn't changed and it's still an essential grab for any DOOM and retro FPS fans. It's top notch 90s FPS throwback fun.

Rather than calling this game a "first-person shooter", it would be better to uncover the long-forgotten term of "Doom Clone". That's what it literally is - a total conversion of Ultimate Doom, except you wouldn't be able to tell this from the first glance. Despite working within procrustean limitations of vanilla mapping and DeHackEd modding, the end result is nothing short of mind-blowing. First of all, the visuals are absolutely gorgeous. For how much I play original Doom, I'm not a big fan of its artstyle, but REKKR looks amazing and I liked it a lot. It has some of the best midtexture work I've ever seen in Doom modding scene, I was constantly making double-takes at pieces of scenery that looked like 3D or voxel models. And then there's boat segment in Episode 4, and I have no idea how it was pulled off without silent teleporters and other Boom tricks (and believe me, I've made quite a few Doom boats myself). Gameplay is changed in clever ways, introducing new mechanics and shuffling things around in general. Weapons are not flashy, but they are solid, you have some familiar guns such as SSG and BFG, while other weapons are completely different. Bestiary is great, monsters are generally fun to fight and not particularly annoying or spongy, and great care was taken to make them as distinct as possible - you will find no direct counterparts to vanilla demons. Maps, aside from looking great, can get a bit labyrinthine, but nothing too bad. The flow is good, you won't find yourself in situation where you pulled a switch and have no idea what it did. Overall difficulty is on the easier side, definitely easier than Plutonia, maps are generally longer but they still don't overstay their welcome. So it's a beatiful game with solid gameplay and it costs next to nothing. If you like retro shooters or want to try one, there is no question whether you should buy it.

Slightly difficult to reccommend, but worth the price of admission for the new episode alone. After having finished all the available REKKR content, I have to say that these are some of my favorite maps. They have a rather unique identity in how they're often designed to be pretty nonlinear, weaving between eachother. And the setpieces are GORGEOUS. Add to that a (mostly) excellent weapon and enemy balance, and you have an exceptionally well-designed total conversion mod. Sunken City feels like an episode that really brings together all of the best elements of the original three episodes and pushes them even further. Each map is killer, both mechanically and aesthetically. And the final boss to cap off the story was perfectly thrilling. That said, I have a couple small gripes. While the menu options have been retooled to make them more legible for newcomers, there are some strange choices for defaults. Namely, disabling mouselook by default. I wouldn't raise an eyebrow to this normally, as I've played through a number of mouselocked Doom WADs, but with REKKR... >An emphasis on projectile-based weapons >The Rune Explosion firing in an arc that benefits greatly from vertical aim >Lots of flying enemies >Often very vertical level layouts Circumstances where a lack of mouselook can become grating. I tried to stick to the intended playstyle as long as I could, but when my weapons started blocking my view of platforms that I needed to cross in the first level, I couldn't take it anymore. In terms of balance, i really enjoy what's been done with the weapon roster...mostly. The main exception being the Soul Launcher being a direct upgrade from the Bow. All of the other weapons have such an interesting dynamic with eachother that the Soul Launcher kind of feels like a disappointment by contrast.I would have accepted something as simple as a burst fire to give it its own identity. It's not egregious, of course, but it was a slight let-down. The dynamic between the Fists and Axe also feel pretty linear. You use the FIsts until you get the Axe and then use the Axe until you get WODE and then go back to using the fists. There's a slight bit of a unique identity between the two, with the fists having a more rapid attack rate for stunlocks, but it isn't compelling enough to really go back to one when you have the other. The Steelshot felt awkward for a lot of the early episodes. It's literally just the Super Shotgun, but with the enemy roster and placements, it often felt too strong to use against lesser enemies and too inconsistent to use against stronger ones. Shooting a Duke anywhere but point-blank will require 3 shots instead of 2, and it can make its TTK feel glacial at times. Fortunately it really comes into its own in Sunken City with larger crowds and more spacious environments making it feel more natural to the combat flow. While I don't want to spend too much more time going into detail, I really wanted to say again that the enemy roster is exceptional. Especially with the new additions. They all play so well with eachother to create distinct challenges and scenarios. Overall, I don't regret dropping $7 on this. it was a great expansion.

Huh, don't be fooled by my (current) playtime. I played REKKR when it was a mod, I also played a shit ton of DOOM over the years. This is one of the best DOOM mods in existence. Yes, it is a total conversion, but manages to be it's own thing. Where your bread and butter in DOOM is shotgun and chaingun, in REKKR, it is melee, pistol, rocket. It heavily rewards close combat because your main bread and butter weapons uses souls, which disappear after two seconds on a zombie kill. Yeah, kill, get their souls, kill again. There are no randomly placed pick ups on maps, the pick ups are placed in environementally logical places. Shotgun ammo? Look for shelves. Health? Hunt rabbits, find grassroots near water. With this in mind it accomplishes a level of level design which is one of the best I have seen on DOOM's engine. Especially the first map in which there is the (hidden) REKKR equivalent of the BFG 9000. Few tips with this version : Graphic quality is in video options Always Enable mouse look is in mouse options No auto aim is in player options You are now free to look around like a modern FPS and no auto aim. Have fun ;)
