Wanted to post a review to counter some of the comments about 'clunky combat' and such. At 80 hours into the game, I get how things fit together reasonably well. First, combat in this game is hard as nails. In may ways the combat mimics Dark Souls.. it is very hard to get through a fight without getting hurt. You must be very careful and know when to push an attack. All mobs, including your own character, have a stamina pool which defines what happens when you get hit, and when you fall down. Get stamina below a certain point and a character will be staggered for a moment on hit. Get their stamina to zero and the character will fall down. If stamina is still high, then the character can hit at the same time as being hit. This means just wildly throwing attacks in a fight will get you killed or very seriously injured. So facing just one opponent without this knowledge will get you killed fast. Facing two opponents makes for a very difficult fight, facing three? A stratospheric amount of difficulty! This means all fights have weight, and much care must be taken to carefully separate an individual from a group so as not to aggro the entire group. There is absolutely nothing casual about the fights in this game. One thing you can do to help with all this is use block to prevent getting hit.. but guess what, just blocking and getting hit will do you no health damage, but you will take stamina damage.. so you can't just stand there and block.. further blocking is directional..and enemies WILL try to get behind you.. a very dangerous situation requiring you to manage WHERE the enemies are at all times. Another thing you can use is dodge.. but again, you must spend stamina to do this...There are things you can do to improve your stamina recovery rate.. but all that does is give you a bit more time.. you can still run out of stamina (same with health here). All this works because each attack animation must complete before you do something else. So start an attack while you can BE attacked will most likely cause you to take a hit (the AI is good at recognizing this). So some level of counter punching is very important (there is a stealth component also.. so you can get a couple free hits in). I start many fights with either a bow strike or sucking mobs into trash to 'even the odds'. You can also chain attacks, following up weak hits with strong ones.. but knowing when this is safe to do is a real art.. The mobs have the same restrictions as you.. while they are attacking they are open to being attacked.. so figuring out how to take advantage of this is at first a real struggle. And each type of mob has a different set of attack animations as well as attack speeds. And once you add area of effect spells into the mix things get a lot more difficult. Dodge is your friend.. but spending stamina wisely is the key here. Button mashers HATE this game.. and for good reason. Further, there is an expectation that you will build up your cash patiently and explore everything to find more loot. In this sense this game feels like an old school RPG, where exploration is king. This is the most interesting game I've played in years.. a truly wonderful gem for those willing to dig in and really learn. One choice they've made in this game is a simple difference in games of this type that has huge consequences. The map of the world is uncovered from the start... but there is no 'I am here marker'. So you must learn the actual world and how it relates to the printed map. And the quests don't guide you with markers. You must puzzle out the truth from the description and figure out what it means. One hidden mechanic at first playthrough that makes this game great.. you can choose how much fighting you really want to do on the open map. Once you've cleared out all the enemies on the open map, you can choose to reset it.. you do this by NOT entering the zone for 7 days (basically sleep in town and never exit to the main map). You get repopulated mobs and a lot more open world fights. This works for the main maps and all the dungeons.. so you can choose easy or hard for anything you prefer to do. SUPER HIGHLY recommended if you are willing to put the time in. Combat is always very dangerous, and will totally keep you on your toes. Call this a 'dark souls type looter/old-school real time RPG' and you have it kinda right. I hope this company makes more games like this. This one is a complete gem.

Outward is a strange game. You can think of it like an open-world souls-like with survival elements, but the game is not kind to folks who may already be familiar with souls-like combat or survival games. The world is populated with enemies but, in most circumstances, there isn't a clear benefit to fighting them. You'll stumble across dozens of ingredients without a good way to identify what they're for or how they'll help you. You'll walk into an area and start dying very rapidly from weather or status conditions that you've haven't had a chance to learn about yet. When you die, you're likely to end up in a bizarre situation that you didn't get to prepare for. Like all games, Outward needs you to learn how to play within its ruleset, but it doesn't do a great job teaching those mechanics to you. Yet, I still recommend the game. If you get past those early hurdles (and if you don't that's okay, too; there are lots of other great games) then you'll be free to experience the charm this game has to offer. That charm comes from the environments, the dungeons, in planning ahead for your next journey and possible fights along the way, in constructing a character build, and even in the lethality of combat and the death scenarios. Exploration is king in Outward and there's a lot of cool stuff to see and find. Exploration, more than any other game element finances your character growth. If you need that exploration and growth to be in service of a clearly set end goal, you may not find this game as fulfilling as others. It can offer a few concrete goals, such as the main story or tough boss fights, but they feel a bit separate from the core gameplay loop. As an example of this separation, you can choose when to continue the main quest after a clearly punctuated intermission. To compare it to another game, it's like choosing when to do Bleak Falls Barrow in Skyrim (just a similar example; playing Outward is not like playing Skyrim). In Skyrim, a significant element of character growth is tied to completing that quest. But in Outward, there's no such gatekeeping. There's perks to completing certain quests and doing them well, or in siding with certain factions, but you can finish most of your build and go nearly anywhere without progressing the story at all. In fact, at the time of this review, I haven't actually done much of the main quest. ^_^; If you're not sure whether this game is for you, here's what I'd recommend if you're willing to give it a quick try before a possible refund: play the opening sequence, get to the point when you can leave the first town and then go explore for a bit (all easy to do within 2 hours). Don't worry too much about the quest you've been given; it can be a bit stressful and it's not very representative of the rest of the game. You can try the tutorial first, but I'd recommend to do that after exploring (it's always available), since it can take a bit of time with all the info it shares. Here's some tips that may help you. Outward is a survival game in the sense that everything you do costs something: resources and weapon durability are common to other games, but you'll also spend other things like max health and stamina, especially in fights. If you sleep to recover those, then you'll lose max mana. It can be frustrating early on when the first enemies out the door are wailing on you and you're only getting weaker as they hit you. But, enemies don't necessarily have anything useful for you to loot, and since there's no character experience, it's often better not to engage. You will eventually have to fight, so when you feel up for it, shadowbox with your weapon to get a feel for its timing and range, then practice on enemies outdoors, or better yet, lure enemies into each other so that you can see how they behave. If you don't like your weapon, there's one of every type lying around in the first town. The most difficult thing to adapt from other games is that enemies don't stagger when you hit them, at least not at first, and the AI will see your attack as an opening to counterattack. If all else fails, just run away and recover. When you die, because dying is a near essential part of the game, you'll probably end up somewhere you don't recognize, weakened, with debuffs and maybe enemies nearby and ready to attack. Mercifully, the only things you may lose upon death are time (in the in-game calendar) and possibly a bit of money. Losing time only matters if your doing a timed quest. You may not have your stuff on or next to you after death, but look around and you'll find it soon. Defeat scenarios are meant to be a bit stressful, but accept that you can always recover from them and that mindset can help pull you through an otherwise dastardly challenge.

Can it be fun? Yes, absolutely yes. The combat system for physical weapons is fresh and unique. I haven't seen many open world rpgs with an emphasis on planning out your method of attack. In outward, if you're outnumbered you need to play dirty or play smart. There is no wailing on each other until one of you drops dead. Instead, you are expected to place traps, chug potions pre-fight, and/or cast spell buffs out the butt. Choices matter. Dialogue matters. Paying attention matters. But is it fun? Ehh... I really wanted to like this game but there were a few quality of life mechanics that I feel were missing. There is very little explanation in game for most of the important mechanics. This would be fine if there was a save system that allowed you to fudge around and find out. Except there isn't, and you have an auto-save system instead. I found myself spending 65% of my time reading on the wiki and only 35% of the time actually playing. The mechanics i primarily have qualms with are the timed quests, hotbar, and class-locked skills. Timed quests, as a concept, are fine. They encourage players to manage their time and restricts murder hobos from going nutty and derailing the story. What irritates me is the fact that there are timed quests and NO INDICATION on how long you're allowed to complete it. You're already forced to walk EVERYWHERE in outward with no mount system which eats up time. Traveling between regions for a timed mission in another regions also eats up time. Dying in game also eats up time. Many timed quests are started simply from dialogue options so while you're doing the main timed quest you're blindsided by another thing suddenly requiring your attention. Going back to the autosave feature, if you mess up and miss the timed quest then its over. Your run is now completely changed and since choices matter your ending is changed too. In outward, you are allowed 8 hotkey slots. These slots are SHARED for both accessing essential items (such as potions, weapons, and antidotes) as well as skills (using your offhand item, casting spells, physical weapon skills). I understand the INTENTION is so you're not walking around like GTA character and pulling everything out your butt and smiting the baddies. However, the RESULT is your character running away from a fight (and stopping momentarily to rummage through your bag) because you grab something from your belt that you specifically put there for ease of access. Many of the skills in the game work in combination with other skills in order to get the desired effect. So you can't fight effectively without filling your hotbar full of skills and thus sacrificing key important items. The most disappointing part of Outward is how it punishes experimentation. You are allowed 3 points to multiclass your character. In concept, that is a lot of multiclassing. However, in practice, it means you cannot experiment with the cool final techtree skills without locking yourself out of others. And if you lock yourself out of the wrong skills your run is ruined because there is no going back to an earlier save file. All that time grinding for money and items is wasted. I really wanted to like Outward because it claimed to be a fresh realistic take on the fantasy rpg sandbox genre. However, the "realistic" aspects of it just aren't implemented in a fun way where I feel like I am actually enjoying myself.

Outward is one hell of a game. about 70%good, 30%bad. 100% oldschool rpg. this may not be for you, if you are looking for a hack&slay or like fast-paced rpgs. the game wont help you. there is no minimap, no quest markers, no blinking from miles away to see interactables. if you happen to find a lever in a ruin in the forest, there will be no message as to what it does. every decision will alter the gameplay and the story. re-/actions are logical (you are burning, so you need to douse yourself in water. or "this stonegolem is made of stone, so venom wont harm it at all.") there are hundreds of different weapons, hundreds others of armors. you will have to compare your equip with each other for the various circumstances as there are stats that are hindersome or dont even matter for the upcoming tasks. it's not like most games, where you get a steel helmet with 2 stats. armor and durability and thats it. it still is a survival game, so you need to think about these aspects, too. you dont have to follow a straight path in quests, most quests have different outcomes depending on how you want to go about them. peacefully, head first, slaughter everyone, it's your choice. but depending on your choices, your rewards will also be different. playing solo or solo hardcore is more difficult, because death is quite crippling. on normal there's no permadeath. but you will lose your stuff on occasion. unique weapons and bosses dont all respawn, neither can you respec. once you made your choice you will have to live with it. walking simulator. sometimes you might need a specific item from a specific npc in a specific region. there are no vehicles. and certainly no fast travel (except some merchants who can bring you to a totally random city, reset every 3 days). there are pots and elixirs that give you +20% speed. but they are extremely rare or really expensive if you dont know how to craft them. but there is other equip that can help with that (master trader boots. still wear them in lategame) thank god for the auto-walk. high replay value. as there are tons of different styles of playing, weapons and possibilities of combining skills and also personal legacy chests that upgrade the items put in for a future twink of yours, the replay value in outward is exceptionally high. there are the following classes: archer, berserker, mage, sorcerer, wl, rogue, tank. Jk. there are no fixed classes. mix up all you want. i wanna go on an adventure! the game is right for you, if you: + like survival games with survival aspects like hot/cold, hunger/thirst + like to play games with illnesses/ailments and their cures + dont need much help to orient yourself + think in patterns and can deduct + like to prepare for battle and timed combos rather than Just press MB1 + like to collect unique equip even if that means to go through the horrors of mazes and puzzles + like to have a fantastic OST (enmerkar forest) + dont care what your char's face looks like, because you will never see it again after character creation.=P + like to play co-op (2 player or 2 player splitscreen) + like combining things out of curiosity + like fantasy rpgs with a slap in the face of realism + go about stuff tactically and strategically + like immersion. (everything has weight. even money or the bag you transport it in.) the game is not for you, if you: - are a hoarder in rpgs - need help and highlighters to find stuff - need completely read out dialogues for immersion (it's mostly text) - only play graphically up-to-date games - <> "lets try X". fail. <> "lets not do that, then." (no save points, no quick save) - like fast-paced games and battles - are dependent on journal entries, bc you can only play every few weeks. (there are next to none) - need a tutorial - get easily annoyed by failure (many monsters can onehit you, most 2-3hit.) - have the attitude 'upgrades will only happen, if the new item is 50% better' - need your char to be in a fitting or beautiful set - freak out if minor bugs happen (monster attacks/can be attacked through doors) - need to quickslot 20+ items/skills. there are only 8. choose wisely. Sidenotes/tipps: Magic is op. magic plus knowing how to dodge things is op+. obsidian/meteoric pistol will break the game as you keep your foes burning until they die, without exception. if facing a difficult enemy in coop, use aggro-pingpong and kiting. learn to dodge and always have alternative gear with you, you might have to change it mid-fight. get the definitive edition as it adds a lot of stuff quite handy in early game without unbalancing. there is no unspec/respec. not even for a fckton of money. what's gone is gone for good. there are no skillpoints, leveling, attributepoints. selling item A is 5g, buying item A is 200g and there's nothing that unbalances that. different merchants have different sell/buy rates. (f.e. cacti in the desert are cheap, but expensive in the snowy mountains) first 20 hours you will be scraping every last bit of gold/silver. after 50 hours you will drown in gold. after 80hours you will be penniless. merchants are scarce outside cities. dont take everything with you and learn to organize. crafting and remembering how to craft things will make a lot of money. before leaving cierzo equip a weapon and burak will teach you a skill for free for said weapon. (2h axe/halberd is the most practical) there are many hidden secrets. so go to the corners of the world, maybe there is a hidden item, chest or npc. if you die, that doesnt have to be bad. trial by error, it will enhance your experience and make even small victories feel deserved and fulfilling. Conclusion Outward is a game not meant for the mainstream player and certainly not for the casual player. it caters to a niche of players who like to play games that have no EasyFromTheGetGo-setting. having said that, once you understand how the game is meant to be played and understand the battle patterns, it's as easy as stealing a lollipop from a child (without it noticing). it can hook you to play for hours and hours, but you have to understand it first. took me 12 ingame hours in solo until i had found the right playstyle for me. i'd never have thought, i'd play this game more than 300hours or have more than one char. and i still die sometimes or make mistakes from which i cant recover. but man, there's just so much content, dungeoncrawling and different skills. finding the right coop partner is difficult, tho. i urged a few handfuls of friends with whom i played a lot of mmorpgs, jrpgs, rpgs and actiongames with, both in my youth and now, but only 1 was capable and persistent enough to give it a go and excel. it has become one of our favorite games. if you read everything, hats off to you. hope it helps.

Outward follows its own vision for an RPG, a spicy strategy in today's market, making design decisions that that first glance may seem counterintuitive, but work together to achieve something special. This game is targeted at an older audience and thus incentivizes us to play slower, look around more, read more, and play more methodically and thoughtfully. Ultimately it transformed the way I played RPGs and has become one of my favourite games of all time. Initially, like most, I fought the game. I complained about bag space, skill slot space, tough/cheap enemies, long distances without fast travel, etc. Truly, what I hated most was not being able to pick up all the loot I want. Money is hard enough to come by! But weirdly, as I played, something started to change. Now that I constantly had to throw away items for bag space, I started reading item descriptions more, looking at weight/money ratio, how the item looks, what I might need it for in the near future. And as I did this I started to develop a more personal relationship with the items I was carrying. I knew each and every item in my pack, what it was for, when I would need it, what I might replace it with. Somehow the devs found a way to deepen my love for loot. My other annoyances followed a similar pattern. e.g. many will tell you combat is souls-like. I also used to say this and it's true on the surface, but really it's a shallow comparison. In Outward preparation for a fight is king, reflexes and reading animations is secondary. Anyway, the short of it is, don't be hasty. Like me, you might end up loving something you might have hated. Shoutout to the 4-part (now only 2-part) review by Ratatoskr on Youtube. Peace

Outwards has so much game in it for gamers willing to be patient enough to see it. It doesn't offer any immediate gratification, and is punishing. However because of this, the process of accomplishing anything in game is much more rewarding. This game isn't for everyone, but if you're willing to go in with an old school mentality you can't find another experience like this.

Unique gameplay with a Semi-unique system that gives different paths of progression based on what you want to do. Lots to explore and each location matters to someone somewhere at some point in the story it seems

Very difficult to start out. Use the wiki page or you'll be lost. Once you get it though it's kinda fun. Don't fight unless you have to.

Outstanding game. Great for people who enjoy difficulty. It's sort of like Dark Souls without bosses, but (on hardcore mode only) every time you die you have a 1 in 5 chance of permadeath. And you can starve or freeze to death. I really like the permadeath thing. It makes every little thing you do dangerous and exciting. Interesting story world too. I love the white mages. I created a hunter who rescued his mommy when she was kidnapped, got enslaved, and fell down a deep hole and died. 10/10
