A must have for MHW. Ignore the steam rating it has at the moment (mixed), most of that comes from the expansion release in early 2020, which at that point had horrible server issues. These of course have been fixed and the game is now completely enjoyable to the fullest with some of the best monsters in the game.
This game needs an ACTUAL review.
It makes no sense reading through all this bad reviews after having played iceborne through the end credits and still playing. TL;DR at the bottom. The game is pretty much like vanilla: unimportant story and lots of monsters to hunt. Great combat system and tons of fun. If you enjoyed MHW you will definetely enjoy MHW Iceborne. I'd say it has about the same length as vanilla so it's worth every cent you pay for it. -So first of all I'm going to adress the main issue that you can read in almost all the bad reviews. -Next I will share my own experience, how I went from almost hating the game to loving it. -Lastly, I will give a few tips to get through Iceborne. "The game is hard" - No it's not. Not much harder than the base game. How many times did you faint to anjanath the first time you fought him? To rathalos? To nergigante? "Monsters have too much hp" - No they don't. It's pretty balanced, you are just used to wear full drachen armor and kulve weapons and shred through a great jagras in 2 minutes. - How much time did it take you to get through low rank fights with the base gear? 10-15 minutes per fight probably, as much as it takes to go through a fight in early MR with HR equipment. Ditch that HR armor and beloved kulve weapons cause they are worth shit now. Once you go through the main story and gain access to end game gear you will shred that great jagras in 2 minutes again, don't worry. "The monsters are ridiculously fast and strong" - Well yes they are, and present a decent challange the first couple of times you fight them. The challange doesn't come from the monster's "insane" difficulty though, it comes from you being used to tank everything the game threw at you and the monsters being pretty much equally predictable. If you fought Archtempered elder dragons single player that's much harder than any monster in Iceborn main quests. You have to forget the comodity you acquired in vanilla. Get on your toes again, learn the monster's tells and patterns. If you have too much trouble switch to a different weapon. Some require too much skill to be playable and you got a pass in high rank because once you reached end game you could basically take any hit and attack through an enraged monster mindlessly. I had to put the longsword on the shelf and get me a HBG and SnS. "Clutch Claw" - You can totally forget about the clutch claw. Granted it will take longer to fight the monsters as it gives a nice 30% dmg bonus on wounded spots. - "Learn" how to use it. Easy as that. Put on a rock steady or evasion mantle, hop on the monster, slap him silly and hit the part. That's it. From now on you can use the moments when the monster is drooling or when he gets downed or knocked to reapply the wound. Also the 2 light weapons I've been using have the ability to perform a clutch claw attack mid combo so you only need to tenderize once. (SnS and DB). My own experience I'm going to spoil some monster names so stop here if you care about that. PD: I played all of the content solo. So I stepped into Iceborne with my end game HR gear and started to fight some beasties. The fights took unusually long and I was puzzeled. I still fought through all the old monsters and some of the new ones without an issue besides the timer. - The first problem came, Barioth. Quick bastard. I failed the quest once and went on again with caution, treating the monster as a monster, not a meatbag. I got him second attempt. This got me on my toes though. - Second problem: Glavenus. That monster had attacks I hadn't seen in any of the other monsters from vanilla. That made the fight really difficult. In vanilla once you fough nergigante it made teo, vaal and kushala feel almost the same, very telegraphed. Fight one you have fought them all. This fight had me frustrated and I actually quit the game for that day and the next. I finally got through it. - Third and eye opening problem: Tigrex. This POS actually got the worst of me. I just couldn't fight him, couldn't win, couldn't dodge, couldn't attack, I felt powerless. After a few days stuck I decided to play it clever, go back to the vanilla days were I would read the monster's log entry, look at its weaknesess, start using traps to deal damage, equip my palico with a shock/sleep weapon, using everything on my power as a hunter to slay that thing. That's when I switched from LS to HBG, it still took me some tries but I finally got him. From that point on my game experience changed, I shed the wrong mentality and went on through the game. Brachydios first try, Shrieking Legiana first try, Fulgur Anjanath first try, Acidic Glavenus first try, Ebony Odogaron first try. I failed Velkhana a couple of times, until it made me review my equipment and make a few changes and I killed her. From that point on I basically killed first try all of the monsters until credits including the final boss. I also got through Rajang, Stygian zinogre and kirin first try too. I've seen a lot of people complain about the special assingments being too difficult. Well, they are post game content and suposed to be a challange. At this point it would make sense to play online if this is too hard for you. You got through the main quests, your duty is completed. Tips to get through MHW Iceborne - This is not High rank, you are not op, you can't tank through it all like it's nothing. - Get MR armor as soon as you can and upgrade it. The defense improvement is insane and you need it. - Get MR weapons, a rarity 10 will almost always be better than your rarity 9 end game weapon and they are easy to craft. - Study the monster's moves before going balls deep, learn it's tells and treat it as a threat, not a meatbag. - Some weapons are not eficient to use if you suck at them, even if you got away with it in HR ( like me with the LS). So put the LS, the bow, the GS, the CB away if you are having too much trouble to fight the monsters and start using an easier weapon. Don't worry you can go back to those once you get good gear and learn the new monsters. - Use shock traps and pitfall traps to deal free damage to the monster. Equip de palico with shock or sleep weapons for the same effect. - The clutch claw is really useful, don't hate it, love it. It will give you easier topples, more damage, kockdowns, easier to break monster's parts for crafting, hang onto the monster while it swaps zones so you don't have to walk, and some other stuff that you will see for yourself. - Don't rely on perfect meta builds. If you have to fight Vaal, slot your miasma jewels, who needs 7 attack boost if you will be dead in 10 seconds after having your hp reduced to 5. - If after looking through guides and trying hard you still can't kill that one monster just go online, no one will judge you. A game is to have fun isn't it? That's as much as you need to go through Iceborne without any guides or spoilers. If you made it to this point you are really interested in the game and you should buy it, don't let other people tell you what you will enjoy and what you will not. Try for yourself. TL;DR : The game is balanced, monsters are not impossible to fight it's you who have the wrong mentality after hours of High Rank endgame thinking you are a God and skillful. PD: This all comes from a guy that hasn't been able to beat Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3 or Sekiro, even after trying multiple times and forcing myself to play. This game's difficulty has nothing to do with Soulsborne. Hope this was useful.

The negative reviews are 90% from when it was first released and had a lot of problems. The vast majority of those problems are resolved. It's a pretty great expansion. Edit for disgruntled commenters: New quests, new monsters, a couple new areas, and it adds to the story. As one should expect, it's like the base game but now there's more of it. Crazy right? Also you can take pictures of cats for measly rewards, so that's cool I guess.

Don't be discouraged by the mixed reviews, it was terrible at launch and many reviews hadn't been updated. I played through all of Iceborne with very little issues, and after a few hundred hours in it I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

Most of the issues from the negative reviews from 2020 are all patched and fixed now. The only thing you should be worried about is the difficulty curve and new mechanics coming from World to Iceborne but other than that, the game is fantastic and gives more content than base World.

    Nov 12, 2021

Most of the negative reviews are about old issues that have been fixed, so you can probably ignore most of the ones that are from early 2020. While the game still doesn't have the best optimization, even my very low spec computer can run this game at a playable level. If you enjoyed the base game, this is definitely a must purchase. It adds a huge amount of new monsters and quests, over doubling the amount of content to play. The clutch claw is the newest tool that players have access to, and while it might not be the best part of the DLC, it is certainly is still fun to use. The new moves allow you for more variety in how you can play your weapon, without changing any of the fundamentals. Master rank is also where the true endgame begins, where you can really start to get a lot of customization options. The armor designs also continue to be beautiful, and with the help of layered armor in master rank you can even work on customizing how you look. The minor things also make a huge impact on the overall experience, such as the personal room you can decorate. Again, if you enjoyed World, Iceborne is a must buy, as it adds so much content to the already great base game.
When in doubt, take a bite!
- The Handler Pros

27 new base expansion monsters + Several post-launch monsters
Reinvigorated combat gameplay with new moves for all weapons and the ability to clutch on monsters with your slinger clutch claw.
A new biome, hub and several new areas.
Post-launch content support added many new monsters, armour, equipment, content, event quests, etc.
Great story arc and character development for many existing characters.
Alatreon and Fatalis are the best fights in Monster Hunter: World.
Cons

Clutch Claw is somewhat unintuitive.
Potato servers with rampant disconnection issues.
The stability of this game is so bad that I often considered simply leaving a negative review saying "this game runs like S%*t".

Abstract
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne continues the Research Commission’s journey from where It ended with a new mysterious phenomenon that demands explanation; a mass migration of Legianas from the coral reef and seismic irritations in the new world. The commission immediately sets in the trail of these Legiania, only to find a new frozen sub-continent beyond a small sea. As usual, the Sapphire Star finds themselves in the vanguard of the adventure, solving mysteries by bonking monsters to death and asking questions later.
Gameplay
Monsters MHW:I features 27 new monsters, of which, 10 are variants of existing base world monsters, typically with new moves and vulnerabilities, the rest are either new monsters (such as Namielle and Velkhana) or returning Monsters from previous MH games (such as Barioth and Tigrex), this imposes the launch roster of the IB expansion, and does not include the many monsters that were added post-launch. Combat The expansion as mentioned before adds new combos and moves to all weapons. In the case of my weapon of choice – the Longsword – adds a new ability (special sheathe) with two attacks that possess a high skill ceiling to utilize to their full potential, and adds much more depth and skill expression that is not unwelcome in a game that can be played for thousands of hours. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2519724288 Clutch Claw The expansion adds a certain gadget to your slinger named “Clutch Claw”, which allows you to fire a claw attached to a rope out of your slinger both at environmental effects (such as scatternut plants to release their slinger ammunition and Vitalilies to release their nectar) and more importantly, on monsters. When used on monsters, you will latch on which ever part of the monster the claw has caught (head, forelegs, wings, hindlegs, tail, differing among monsters). The clutch claw adds a few significant mechanics to Iceborne’s gameplay. Clutching on monsters allows you to either use your hunter knife to attack the monster, which if used on an un-enraged monster’s face will cause it to recoil from your direction, or use your weapon to attack the monster. With this addition, there is also a new mechanic called “Tenderizing” that was added to Iceborne. Basically, every monster part can be tenderized by attacking it while clutched on a monster, making it “soft” and weaker to your attacks. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2519640105 Different weapons have different capability to tenderize a monster part. Weapons with a slow tenderizing animation typically require only one weapon claw attack to tenderize the monster part, whereas other weapons with fast attack animations typically require two attacks, notwithstanding the new in-game skill that boosts your clutch claw weapon attack to tenderize with only one attack. Despite an intriguing initial outlook, Clutch Claw can sometimes not be as exciting as it sounds like – the system is sometimes unintuitive. Aim for a monster’s head, and your claw will sometimes latch on its tail on the opposite end, many such cases. Clutching on a monster reliably requires safe openings, which are often hard to procure. The tenderizing mechanic also means that some monsters possess stronger hitzones now that are much hardier before tenderizing. Side activities The expansion delivers both new side quests and expands on original ones from the original game, which in consequence soars the intricacy and depth of the new world for those that wish more from it than only hunting monsters. The activities include continuation of previous endemic life research quests, as many new endemic life creatures were added in the expansion – including the extremely rare and almost legendary Wintermoon Nettle, and survey research strands from the Lynian researcher. The expansion also adds a steamworks minigame in Seliana that allows the player to spend fuel to assist Seliana in generating steam – and in return receive lots of consumable items, tickets, gems, trade-in items. Another addition is a long strand of treasure hunts with every Lynian tribe in every locale (requires unity lv.3 to initiate) in which you can receive puzzle tips that lead to treasures. Another addition is the ability to barter with the Lynians (as before, requires unity lv.3) in which you can barter your items for RNG returns. New Continent Iceborne takes you to a new, ice-bound continent across an ocean In the new world. Featuring a new hub and a new locale with its own unique biome. The hub, dubbed “Seliana” by the Commander, and a nearby locale, the “Hoarfrost Reach”. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2080549681 The new hub, Seliana, takes no small amount of inkling from Astera. It is much smaller and approachable than Astera was. While some people like me were not bothered by Astera’s engrossing scale, it is undeniable that many found its size inconvenient, and would come to appreciate Seliana’s snug proportions plenty. The new locale, the Hoarfrost Reach, is by a far margin, in my opinion, the one to rule them all. It is the largest and most polished one. Possessing of many secret areas, well designed arenas and their respective transitional corridors, a cracking amount of well structured verticality, and retains a marriage of uniform aesthete and diverse presentation in its multitude of arenas. The Reach also introduces a new tribe of Lynians; the elusive Boaboas, and several unique quest strands that explores their habits and activities, granting them unprecedented depth to previous Lynian tribes. Performance In terms of stability, the expansion adds salt to injury from the base game with more crashes and absurd bugs like the game entering windowed mode on its own after several hours of playing fullscreen among rampant connectivity issues. I am able to maintain 70-80FPS at 1440p resolution steady on my parts of the game with the following hardware: - AMD Ryzen 3600x - GTX 1080Ti - 16Gb of DDR4 3200Mhz
Verdict
Current state of the expansion, with glitches and performance accounted for; 7.5/10 (Very good) Connectivity issues & game stability issues addressed; 9.5/10 (Excellent) Important disclaimers; - MHW:I is the only MH game I played, otherwise I watched lots of Youtube gameplay of older games. - I only played Longsword in MHW:I (and rarely with other weapons in Arena quests), and as of the time I posted this review I have 2476 hunts on the longsword. Ignore the mixed overall reviews, as most of the negative reviews cover the DLC when it first came out, which had a tons of glitches/issues that have been fixed. Don't worry about the game-breaking glitches that are listed in the reviews, the game runs smoothly now, and rarely has performance issues. If you loved the base game, then you should definitely get Iceborne. It adds a new mechanic that is super fun to mess with and comes with more challenging monsters to fight. At this point, I honestly can't see the base game without the DLC, it is quite honestly the perfect match up in terms of addon content. Iceborne is a little bit pricey (POV base game is cheaper), but it is still worth the $40 although I would wait for a sale-
