  PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING - Microsoft has stopped allowing Dovetail to work on this product, its back in the hands of Microsoft and has been put out to pasture. Its done. No more support. There is even a security warning when you start up the app now saying Microsoft have let their FSX websites SSL cert expire. It was not renewed. While this does not effect the game other than obnoxious popup every time you load the game, it is telling that M$ has decided to push people to MS2020. For those of us with laptops that cant run it were screwed. I cant believe Valve has allowed Dovetail to keep selling this as well as all the addons that are NO LONGER SUPPORTED. How do i know? Go to the active sky addon's homepage and look for the update file. The developer says "we cant update this on steam anymore because Dovetail no longer supports FSX Steam". This means if you buy a 3rd party dlc addon like I did (a bunch in fact) when they had this last sale... Well you are screwed when it comes to support. This is now abandonware. The worst part is Dovetail isnt telling anyone, and valve is allowing it. Its pure fraud. I own the full boxed version of FSX and Acc addon. I have my disks. It was on this PC but a 3rd party developer said the steam version worked better (it doesn't as long as you update your boxed version and do the right tweaks. Its the same damn thing BUT they added encryption for the DLC, basically DRM. Thats it, what you get is DRM added. I have issues adding my 3rd party paid Garmin 750 into some of the aircraft i bought here on steam because of this DRM added which is not part of the boxed addons. In fact I just bought a non steam addon from ORBX directly that allowes me to add the garmin, where the planes here that say you can? Nope. The drm screwes it up if you didnt buy it on steam, which these garmin 750's are only available on flight1 not steam. Seriously, buy a boxed version and do the tweaks yourself; its the same thing minus the damn added drm which only screwes YOU. I'm so furious I bought this on steam again, just for the damn support and all I got was abandonware and DRM that screws who? The PAYING customer. I want you to get this through your head if you are still reading this review.... this product is no longer in the hands of dovetail (the company that is says is selling it here on steam... that's a LIE) Its now back in the hands of microsoft who has put it out to pasture; its dead. Any third party addon you buy here is also o longer supported, but still includes DRM that makes it not work with other non steam addons. If you bought boxed Horizons VFR, like other reviewers here have already stated, it will not work with the addons here. Im also reporting the 3rd prty GPS addons bought from Flight1 also don't work with these aircraft, even though it says on the aircraft pages that they do support it. Its a lie, they don't. The DRM broke being able to modify the aircraft models in a way that they need to to make it work. Simple as that. The entire thing is a disaster; just stay away... its a flaming dumpster fire. Knowing its no longer getting supported, and the dlc cant be updated. FSX was never getting updated but the DLC is and not every third party is doing like the active sky crew supporting their customers offsite; so take care when you buy addons. Something really wierd? A WEEK AGO, right before this steam sale of all these addons, dovetail and microsoft both removed their blog posts about FSX "coming home to microsoft and they were excited for the future support of fsx now that it was back in the hands of the microsoft team" . Today when i went looking for the post, i found the article linking to it however microsoft has removed the blog post and instead now shows.... you guessed it "MS Flight sim 2020". Thats right, FSX is officially abandon and M$ just did it this past week, with out telling anyone. They just removed it from the internet and poof its gone. Dovetail too. Look for yourself!!!!

  I bought this for my grandfather because he used to play 2004 back in the day. We tried to install it from CDs, but his computer was entirely too old to even make it through the installation process. The steam version was definitely the move. It's great to bond with him when we play it together. Definitely a brand new avenue that he can enjoy. Thanks

  FSX still does 80% of what the new MSFS and Xplane 12 do without the huge updates and slow loads. Great for a quick local flight and a bit of forced landing practice.

  Ive been flight simming for 10yrs and figured I give it a try. Pleasantly surprised this is a close third behind msfs2020 and xplane. But what I think makes this sim hold up is its missions, there are tons of them and they are far better than the msfs2020 missions that were ported over for the 40th anniversary update. FSX missions actual have stories and voiced characters; msfs2020 is bland a to b missions with no effort put into them. If you want some fun missions to fly and you find this sim on sale I highly recommend you give it a try.
