  TL/DR: If you've finished Matsuribayashi & find yourself wanting just a little bit more then Rei is exactly what you're after. Saikoroshi-hen makes up the majority of the read, serving as both an epilogue for Higurashi while also bridging the gap to later When They Cry novels. It's everything you'd expect from a Higurashi chapter despite it's (much) shorter length, and is absolutely essential reading for folks who've made it through to the end of Kai. Hirukowashi-hen is a bit shorter, but thoroughly entertaining thanks to its ridiculous, lighthearted scenario. This story also introduces some new OST pieces which compliment the read well, though I found myself immediately nostalgic & wanting nothing more than the pieces I'd fallen in love with to come back. Batsukoishi-hen is, by far, the shortest & most forgettable story of Rei. I suppose I'm really not that much of a degenerate to enjoy what's basically half an hour of juvenile lewdness, but if that's your bag then more power to you - I hope you enjoy it! An extra shout-out has to go to the Cast Review & Staff Room. They've always been full little extras, but Rei kicks that up a notch with its charm, gratitude, & insight into the then upcoming title, Umineko.

  Well, this game was a surprise release for me! But these volumes are so cheap, it's rarely any trouble to pick them up. As it happens, this set of stories are to be read after completing the main story in Chapters 1-8 and largely serve as What If? bonus content. Saikoroshi-hen is more in line with the mystery/thriller/horror vibes that the series is known for, a sort of epilogue that places the well-fought Good Ending from Chapters 1-8 into jeopardy. It is currently being praised in comments and reviews as the most relevant story to pick up Rei for, and I can't say I disagree. It's another meaty, disturbing story to add to the many worlds in Higurashi lore. I don't see the other bonus chapters, Hirukowashi-hen and Batsukoshi-hen, receiving nearly as much love. They are meant to be viewed as the more fun, light-hearted chapters, as with any of the slice-of-life sections of Higurashi proper before shit starts to hit the fan in each section's respective world. I'm pretty sure, if you're looking at these bonus sections after finishing the Question/Answer arcs yourself, you've already formed your own opinion on those parts of the story. And the concept themselves are nothing to write home about: Love charm! Chaos ensues! Keiichi needs fantasy-fuel to pursue Punishment Games again! Let your imagination go wild! Heavy on the perverted fanserviceness, so if you're not a fan of that, you likely won't be a fan of these chapters. I get that. However, in the second half of the latter story, we see the ladies participate in the same behavior, and that made me smile from ear to ear as a great show of "Gender Equality" in anime which I find to be an excellent subversion of tropes and being able to enjoy the perverseness no matter your walk in life - but hey, maybe I'm just the kind of pervert to enjoy it regardless of all of that in the first place. They're just fun stories, if you find them fun. And I look forward to more short scenarios with Higurashi in the future (and also maybe finally check out Umineko as the After Party and Staff Room grew more insistent towards it).

  Gee, this final chapter of higurashi reminded me of how proud I was to see Rika get so much character development. My girl grew! *pinches cheeks* *headpats* It would be a shame if something happened to all that character development.... *looks at Higurashi SotsuGou* *winks*

  First of all do yourself a favor, and install the 07th-Mod for this game. Then after you do that you get the Voice overs with the LipSync, and an two versions of one of the chapters. Now for the review. This game is a compilation of three basic arcs set in the Higurashi world. One being serious and Twilight Zone-ish, while the other two are basically comic relief and pretty funny. If you enjoyed Higurashi When They Cry, you will most likely enjoy Rei as well.

  Three unrelated episodes; one set after the main story of Higurashi, two basically unrelated to the Higurashi timeline. I don't think anything here is particularly essential. Saikoroshi (the one set after) has interesting ideas, but is ultimately pretty tedious; there's good stuff, but there's also what feels like hours of characters (first Hanyuu, then Rena) staring at the screen and lecturing you. I complained that Ryukishi07 needs to learn to trust his audience back in Minagoroshi. Can't the readers decide for themselves whether Rika makes the right decision? Can't the reader make their own judgments about the way she views her parents? Can't we ruminate on our own about whether the world Rika finds herself in is really better (or worse) than the “regular” world? I begrudgingly tolerated this sort of thing in Minagoroshi because I knew it was at least setting up the climax in the next chapter; here, it just pisses me off. Hirukowashi is a mostly comic story about a magical artifact that causes people to fall in love, set outside of any recognizable timeline. It's the most successful story of the lot, mostly avoiding both the Scylla of Saikoroshi (“I have an Important Message to Impart, and will not shut up about it.”) and the Charybdis of Batsukoishi (“I'm not even telling a story any more, I just want to be weird about children”). It's severely let down by a lengthy mahjong sequence; I don't know if it would be more interesting to someone who knew the rules, but watching them play Clue for forty minutes wasn't exactly thrilling, so I'm thinking not. The best of the lot, but not essential. As for Batsukoishi,what can I say? Do you remember the scene in Onikakushi (I think it was) where the club plays some card game, and Keiichi kept winning and forcing the girls, including the extremely underage ones, to dress in sexually humiliating outfits and call him “Master” and stuff? But then one of them won, so Keiichi had to do all that stuff, too? Batsukoishi dares to ask the question, “What if that was even longer, and had explicit rape jokes in it?” It's very weird that Ryukishi07 seems to openly despise the excesses of Otaku culture (as shown in Watanagashi), but also fills his novel with material intended to appeal to that audience.

  Reviewing mostly to tell people that this is, to my knowledge, the only release of Higurashi on Steam that has the original music and sound effects from the game's original release, rather than the generic replacements from MangaGamer. The VN itself is quite good, with Saikoroshi being an excellent thematic cap-off to Higurashi as a series, and the other stories being neat comedic side-stories. The messages from the characters in the after-party made me feel quite emotional and nostalgic, making it feel like a true ending and goodbye to this great series.
